  • Welcome to another fun little restoration project that the whole family can enjoy. This time its the turn of this 90 year old Lake Elliot screw jack that i managed to dig out of a barn that was getting renovated. Very little information is out there for this particular jack all I've managed to find out is what I could find on the classic British jack website the info is posted below.
    Lake & Elliot N17080
    Description
    This is a 2 stage screw jack. On one side is cast N17080 and on the other LAKE & ELLIOT LTD BRAINTREE ENGLAND. On top of the winding bevel gear is FABRIQUE EN ANGLETERRE suggesting that this jack may be for a French Vehicle. It is 8.25" closed. Information that has come to light says that N17080 is a Ford stock number for Fordson jacking systems.
    Applicable Vehicles:
    Fordson tractors built between 1931 and 1945.
    Jack Handle Type:
    Rectangular bar.
    So anyway I hope you enjoy this little restoration and will join me again next time for another fun filled project.
    Enjoy
    RRC

    Brought back great memories of helping my father in the garage in the early 1970s. I saw the rusty starting piece and thought yes, but dad's was green. Then you painted it green and I have such a smile on my face. Thank you.

      @@BettySwollocks13 Odd reply, there may be others on par, but this and other things he restores, he restores as close to new as possible. That CR250, that was obvs way more complex than this, was done to perfection.

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'll agree with @Betty Swollocks there are better restorers out there when it comes to this type of restoration, lets face it we are all thinking of my mechanics and to be fair he is a professional machinist with full access to lathes, mills, forges, etc etc and he is fully set up for this type of work where as im a professionally trained painter and mechanic so I think on work like this i do ok not he best but certainly not the worst and as @Halfdead Rider mentioned when it comes to my car and bikes restorations they are top notch as that's where my main skill set and workshop setup allows me to shine.

    • @HalfdeadRider
      @HalfdeadRider ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RRCRestoration I still kind of disagree though, simply because there was nothing more needed to be done to improve the jack. Sometimes a restorations can go too far, especially on an item like this, but of course that can also be subjective.

    • @swifty2844
      @swifty2844 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just watched the mentioned channel, looks the same amount of skill to me 🤷‍♂️

    • @HalfdeadRider
      @HalfdeadRider ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BettySwollocks13 Not too clever tbh!, the guy said the channel is the best, not that he is the best restorer. Also you did not simply say he wasn't, you said "there are some far better restorers out there", not exactly true, so yes on levels, an odd reply!

    Great video, but I do have two questions.
    Why did you select sand blasting instead of vapor blasting for most of the parts? And how did you attach the top piece? did you weld the top piece on and grind the x pattern into it?

    • @bisonuberti
      @bisonuberti ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Same here... It felt like an incomplete video. No matter how much he worked on it. Two different types of blasting and no explanation. The finished top felt fraudulent... he kind of sneaked it in there.

    • @JonnyD3ath
      @JonnyD3ath ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suspect the vapour blasting is easier on the metal, leaving a smoother finish as its a screw thread.
      The sand blasting on the rest is fine as it was getting painted and that would fill any texture left by the pitting etc

    This is a very useful video for me. I have a very similar jack in a similar condition thanks to a leaky toolbox in the back of my truck. These jacks are old school but they're not throwaways, very strong and reliable. It's always good to watch someone else do a job like this before doing it oneself, even if it is straightforward. Thank you.

    Nice job, especially with the paint. I feel like two significant things were missed though - how did you reattach the top piece? And isn't there supposed to be some sort of handle that goes into the slot on the crank mechanism?

    • @SilvaDreams
      @SilvaDreams ปีที่แล้ว

      The handle was likely just a piece of wood and is long gone.

    • @the_clockwork_jackass6897
      @the_clockwork_jackass6897 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@SilvaDreams I have 4 of these jacks, all left to me by my grandfather. the handle on two of them is a piece of wood with three steel bands, one on each end, about three inches from the end acting as a stop as well as a reinforcement, and one dead center, and there is a 1/4 inch rod going down the middle of the wood. The handles are only about 1/2in by 1in, so the reinforcement is rather necessary to lift larger stuff. Years ago, before he passed, my grandfather noticed the bottoms of the post on his pole barn were rotting, so him, and a few buddies got together with their jacks, almost all this type, and lifted the WHOLE BARN up about 6in, cut the bottom 4in off, and set it back down. I only wish I knew how much beer was involved 😂
