Got slappy crooks as a kid in 93 😂 So they’re pretty locked after starting back up five years ago, now moved up to front and back crooks on the Woolstores Fremantle ledge, it saves the old legs a bit not jumping in every time
Skating in the early 2000s, curbs were basically only a beginners or warmup obstacle, but i always loved them so much. It's nice to see them get some attention again to where I don't have to watch a late 80s/super early 90s video just to see a pro skate them. Unfortunately I had an injury I wouldn't let heal, and when I finally did, like an idiot I filled the void with dope. It's so hard to force myself to get back into it when I already lost EVERY little ability I had 10 years ago. Now I'm out of shape, self conscious and nobody to skate with. I hope one day I overcome this before it's too late, videos like these help
Yeah they are becoming super popular again dude and they’re so fun too! Oh dude, that sucks! Even if you get out there and cruise around you can hopefully still have some good fun 🙌🏻
Thanks dude makes heaps of sense. I also noticed you raise your center of gravity when you hit the kerb . I think that's something I have been doing wrong. Keen to give it a go once im not injured . Thanks
Yeah dude, almost like a quarter pipe when you transition your weight from inside the ramp to on top of the coping! Oh damn, hopefully you heal up soon and can get back out there 🙏🏽
Wow, you make this look so simple that even I want to try it! :) At 2:05 it looks like the whole heel - or almost half of your front foot - is hanging off the heelside of the nose. Where is the weight on the front while you're grinding in this position? Is it on the ball of the front foot?
Sick dude, hopefully this helps! It depends man, I personally ride loose trucks and find that helps my wheels roll up the curb easier BUT some people prefer tighter trucks for slappy grinds since as they are pushing their toes down, the heel side wheel rolls up easier too because the truck is tight and it follows your movement. Both work but just depends what feel most comfortable to you man 👌🏼
Getting myself a Pilz Carried Away Jacuzzi 9.125" board with some af1 hollows 169's (which i think is the 66's). been recently getting back into skating and trying to figure out what i feel comfortable has been a bit of a hurdle. recently tried a 9" popsicle board and it felt really good and comfortable! always been interested in egg shaped boards and after watching your review ive decided to get jacuzzi unlimited for my first ever egg shaped!
Are you wearing Tretorn shoes. Me and a friend each found a pair in the 90s at a Goodwill thrift store. They skate well. They should get into the skating game.
I have been struggling for months figuring out how to pop out of crooks.. I can pop into them and grind just fine, slappying into them is just starting to click for me as well, where I can hold the grind for the entire length of the curb.. the problem is I have no idea what technique to use to prevent the board from flipping over when getting out of the grind. I can do them to fakie or with a shuv out with almost 100% consistency, but popping to regular always makes it go primo and has actually caused me to sprain my ankle twice.. I could really use some tips or practice steps.. I know how to pop out of noseslides and smith grinds, but that doesn’t translate to crooks at all for me. Your’s look so effortless, so I know I must be missing a key point, please help! 😅 Also, the slappy tip is exactly what made it click for me too! Tip your feet down and allow the heel to float up, treating the curb almost like a tiny quarter pipe.. it just works haha
Yeah dude, this is a super common problem! I probably over simplified it by saying “just push your front foot forward” but as well as doing that your back foot needs to do a little slide up as if you actually are popping a nollie. It’s a very similar movement to when you pop out of a nose manual or nollie pop your front wheels out of a quarter pipe. So pushing your front foot forward to pop out of the grind with your front truck as well as sliding your back foot up towards the tail creates that ‘pop out’ movement and keeps your board level as you come out of the grind so it doesn’t flip over. Hopefully that makes sense and helps man 🙏🏽 100% man, that technique opened up this trick so well for me 🙌🏻
I don't know if there is a 'best' set up but egg boards help since the kicks are tapered so your board can get up into slappies easier without the nose getting in the way and looser trucks also helps too man 👌🏼
i just learned slappy fs 50/50 today lol but im i wanna try on a taller curb but its pretty intimidating and i feel like im gonna go straight into the curb and get cooked. Are bs slappys easier to get into on larger curbs?
Oh dude, slappy fs 50's were the hardest put of all of them for me to learn lol I find slappy bs 50's easier in general but I've never really tried them on higher curbs than this 🤔 I might have to try it out next session!
@@LeonPaxton oh really?? I'm like fairly new to skating in general so i havent done literally any grinds except 50s and feeble (somehow lmao) on transition, but when my friend was like "hey come here imma teach u slappy's" i felt that fs felt a bit less scary lol. He even told me that bs is easier but yeah, I tried like 3 times and then I started to get em down really good after that. Just had to get powersliding into it (thats how i go into it on transition so) out of my mind and then ba-boom. Hell yeah give that a go, id love to see some in future vids 🔥 I'm actually not sure how much bigger the curb u skate in the vid is compared to the one i learned on, but it looks significantly taller.
It does! When I do slappy front 50’s I put all the weight on my heels and let the toe side whee roll up the curb the same way. I think I’ll make a video about that next 👌🏽
@@LeonPaxton a little of both but mostly getting in, I'm starting to think my kingpin is part of the issue, but I struggle to commit to going back toeside, and usually end up in willy or 50
If your kingpin is getting in the way then your truck is too high up on top of the curb, you should be pinched on an angle where only your heel side wheel is on top of the ledge and your truck is just grinding the corner edge. Try and think of it as a nose slide but having your wheel sitting just on you of the radius and that might help pinch and lock in better. That's how I picture a crooked grind and helps me get into them better, hopefully that helps you 🙏🏼
@@LeonPaxton the pinch I think, I honestly don't know, I get into em sometimes and sometimes I don't, I have no issue popping out when I have a good one, but getting a proper pinch is such a challenge
It could help just stepping up on your board on top of the curb in that pinch position to get used to how you need to hold the lock in and where you need to have your weight. I like having my weight on the heel which is also weird to get used to at first rhough
Who learnt slappy 50's before slappy crooked grinds?

Me! Nice trick tip G
Bs slappy ,fs slappy then slappy crook for me.
Slappy Back 50😌
Front slappy 50s and noseslides 😅
Dude, that park looks amazing. So mellow and it’s so smooth. Will try your tips in the next sesh
It’s actually so fun!

same
Right on! Thank you! I've had slappy 50's dialed for a while but for some reason crooks seem much scarier, will try this out!
No worries dude! Oh sick, I learnt these first and the slappy 50's were way harder to learn for some reason lol
@@LeonPaxton Haha, slappy 50's take some time for sure! They're hard until their all of a sudden easy

Thanks dude! Slappy grinds always sound better for some reason lol

It’s so damn fun!
That’s great! I’ve always done them different hence why I can’t do them on higher things. This has helped! Love to see the other slappy grinds.
How do you usually do them?
Sick, ill work on the slappy fs & bs 50’s next 🤝

Awesome tutorial, thanks for explaining it so well!

Does anything change on a 90 degree curb/ gutter. The one your on has some banked angle and ours don't.
It’s definitely easier on a curb like this one that is slightly angled but I do the exact same process on a 90° curb and works fine too 👌🏽
Really easy, When you realize, go towards it, put the weight on your heels and when you are in it, put the weight on your toes
