F8C suits me better. It has a massive quantum tank so can use the VK00, it has 2 size 2 shields vs 2 size 1. In a dogfight 1v1 it will lose to the F7A against an opponent with equal skill, but it is a more flexible ship for life in the verse.
So, while the VK-00 looks good based on that high top speed, the Spectre is actually faster for most jumps. Not only can you do successive jumps more quickly, but the Spectre has a much faster Stage 1 Acceleration value (1000+m/s vs. 600ish of the VK-00), so unless you're making the longest possible jumps across the system over and over, (like Crusader to Microtech) you'll save more time with the Spectre. Grinding bounties within one system for example - the Spectre beats the VK-00 handily. Even for a 32 GM jump (the distance between Crusader and Hurston), the Spectre beats the VK-00 by 10 seconds. The "Acceleration" stat is also why those Size 2 drives like the Crossfield or XL-1 are way faster than the VK-00, even though they have lower top speeds. - a player who used to use the Banu Defender as my runabout ship (also a S1 QD w/ a bunch of fuel) :D
For appearance. F8C has that hunter killer presence (in look) down. The F7A has the Attack craft look nailed. Yeah, bigger ships should not die to fast to fighters…they will never balance that as it will brake the game. Basically a fighter should not even register damage to a capital ship unless it hits Ion/Inferno territory. And a requires like 6 just to kill it.
