this was actually the only ballade i didnt like until i heard zimerman play it haha, he brings out so much sense and colour in the music i can understand it more than any other recording
Huh.. funny that. I found this the 'easiest' Ballade to listen to for the first time, although I listened to Zimerman first for all four Ballades. Not so sure about Ballade II.
You know what, first I thought No.1 sounds amazing and familiar, and then No.4 for its calm, mature story line and then No.2 for its dramatic contrast, and then No.3 that sounds like a fun myth. After all, they are all so great, and Zimmerman’s charismatic play is out of this world. Some might say Chopin is delicate, but no, he’s delicate beast and Zimmerman seems the only one who can make it come true.
We are now two. Zimerman's interpretations are unique, when I heard these 4 Ballades, I wanted to play them like Zimerman, I know it's not possible to exactly copy his impressive style and excellent technique but it has always been a starting point to at least try to get closer what Chopin really intended. I learned 1st a few years ago, and 2nd recently, now I'm going for 3rd. I hope we both succeed!
now 3 pianists - sorry I'm 5-months late I have finished the technicals on a tolerable level, performed 2 times in public and...uhmm.... Zimmerman's interpretation is so unbelievably "fluffy" and effortless; meanwhile I played it like Beethoven finally had a day off as Disneyland, battling his acrophobia (height) even though he was having fun. 😢 maybe I should have just quit after the exams and stuff
yeah! I started learning it a little bit ago and I'm at just before 5:20, i know i wont be able to get it as clear and fast as zimerman, but oh man, this is such a fun ballade to play!

His playing moves me every time I hear it, even ones I normally wouldn't like he can play to absolute perfection.
I love all the ballads! They're all jewels. I can't choose a favorite when they're all so wonderful. I will say though, these one seems the most structurally/thematically unified of all of them.
The way I see it there are two themes one which goes up a scale and one that goes down and they merge in in the final coda so the final theme is going up and down the scale
For me the first one will always be the best (it's m'y favorite piece from all the piano repertoire) but the four are truly amazing. They're so filled of emotion, it's incredible how Chopin's Ballades move me to tears
True!!! I love that A♭- G - F - E♭- - - A♭- G - F - E♭- - - in octave, sounds so beautiful with the reverberation effect caused by the piano and the recording studio

Yes! Absolutely. In fact that makes it weirdly hard to play convincingly for me. The harder parts are just "hard" but this has a different amount of difficulty in it. I'm glad other people like that part too!
no. 4 is probably what i would say is my favorite ballade, but this one is second and is so, SO underrated. i love how he plays the second theme at 2:10; very light and playful. and the best part of this piece has to be from 5:20 to the end, it's just too good

So beautiful such as the other ballades. Chopin made the portrait and pianist brought colors to it. Indeed stunning, brought me so many emotions as always. Thanks Chopin.
So im going around listening to some other people play ballade no 3, and it just highlights how amazing Zimerman plays it here. Something about the gusto, the sheer power of how he plays, mixed with the gentle, but firm style that you can't find from any average pianist. What an amazing job he does
I have watched this video as a reference for learning this piece myself, and now I come back to just listen to it every day, because his interpretation is just so beautiful :)
I think that the balance, the musicality, the dynamics, the appropriateness of the touch that Zimerman uses in these 4 ballads is sublime, brilliant, difficult to achieve.
“Where waters ebb there is always a corresponding flow and the act of remembering is the flow of thought that has drained away.” This extremely elegant Platonic quote came to mind while listening to this interpretation. I’m certain I listened to it a few months ago and enjoyed it now even more. Chopin’s mastery of the piano is so very explicitly showcased in the ballads. The third is my second favorite next to the fourth. It’s dramatic psychology is brilliantly conceived and expertly sustained from start to finish. The pianist is totally immersed in this work and his understanding fleshes it out in a way that fully manifests its beauty and power. I could listen three times successively and still look forward to the fourth and fifth hearing. “Music expresses wordless odyssey’s”. This original axiom is my heartfelt response to pieces of this poetic magnitude that sweep the soul along a river of otherwise unutterable sonic pleasure with emotional and intellectual joy for a journey so profoundly appreciated and beloved. Bravissimo!!! PWG
Absolutely stunning! Captures the essence of a no-nonsense Chopin without the complicated 'romanticism'. Although Chopin is a romantic we rarely hear the elegance and poise which is essential to who he was as a person and composer. This just changed the way I look and play his music entirely!
I agree. It is even true that Chopin thought of himself as a classicist, not a romantic. And it is very evident, especially in his early works. I believe that after he moved to Paris his style became more developed with a light romantic flare.
I know so little but this one seems like life in these bodies itself. Good and bad peaks, then that gentle, exciting moment of knowing it comes again. Bliss, dread, gratefulness.
I would say this is the most underrated ballade, but how can I say that! If any of these ballades were the "least liked" I would say they are underrated. I was able to master the first part. But when the tempo changes going into the second part of the song I have a little more trouble and have never been able to get it down. Chopin's music is somewhat predictable in a way. He loved to use a lot 3/4 and 6/8 time. Many of his nocturnes and this ballade follow that trend.
