Top 10 Players To Never Play In The NBA
Best 10 Basketball Players Who Not Played In The NBA
What if I told you some of the greatest basketball players to ever live on this earth never played in the NBA? It might seem crazy, but there were a number of amazing ballers that for one reason or another didn’t make it into the league.

Some Of These 10 Great Ballers Had Tragic Life Stories :
    10. Demetrius "Hook" Mitchell
A drug problem never allowed a playing career for Mitchell to occur.
    9.Lenny Cooke
After averaging 25 Points and 10 Rebounds a game his junior year, he was averaging 31 points as a senior until he was ruled academically ineligible due to his 19th birthday. Instead of going to college he entered the 2002 NBA Draft, forfeiting his college eligibility. Nobody drafted him.
    8.Marques Haynes
    Harlem Globetrotters Team
    7.Joe “The Destroyer” Hammond
Joe Hammond set the single game scoring record at Rucker Parker with 82 points, causing the Lakers to consider signing him to an NBA contract.Unfortunately, drugs consumed his life and a NBA playing career never occurred.
    6. Benji Wilson
He had the potential to be a phenomenal professional player, but his life was tragically taken in a shooting at his school
    5.Hank Gathers
Hank Gathers was the 1989 WCC Player of the year and a 2-time WCC Tournament MVP.Gathers was destined to be a great NBA player, but due to a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, he passed away at too young of an age. HE DIED ON COURT AFTER COVERTING AN ALLEY-OOP DURING A GAME . IMAGINE :(((
    4.Oscar Schmidt
He played 26 years in the Brazilian league and scored 11,000 more points than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did in his professional career.
    3.Earl “The Goat” Manigault
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar claims that Earl is the best player that he has ever played against, despite him never playing a second in the NBA.
    2.Pee Wee Kirkland
Kirkland was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1969, but is said to have turned down the contract because he was making more money being a drug dealer.
    1.Len Bias
Len Bias averaged 23 PPG and 7 RPG in his senior year at Maryland. He won accolades such as the 1986 ACC Athlete of the Year and the 1985-86 ACC Player of the year.
He was drafted by the Boston Celtics with the 2nd pick in the 1986 NBA Draft, but he suffered a tragic death two days later from cardiac arrhythmia induced by a cocaine

Oscar Schimdt actually had some source of invitations to the NBA, but FIBA didn't allowed NBA players to play for their national teams back then, so he decided not going there so he could play for Brazil. And he didn't just played in brazillian league, he played in Europe as well.

You missed Wayne Estes. He was the first Utah State BBall player to score more than 2000 points. He scored 48 in a game and then while walking home, tried to help fellow students injured in a car crash. He unfortunately grabbed a power line that had come loose and it electrocuted him. Much has been written about how this All-American would have been an awesome professional player. Very sad. No drugs, he was just high on life that night (was returning from phoning his mother to tell her about what he called his "best" ever performance) and was trying to help his fellow man.

Earl Manigault is definitely #1. He dunked from the free throw line in a game, he did 36 reverse dunks in a row, and he dunked twice with the same ball in the same jump, not to mention Kareem said he was the greatest players he's ever played against

I really liked Jay Edwards from IU as well--smooth, great clutch shooter. Hank broke my heart, I was in high school when that happened & I was devastated. Ben Wilson was another heart breaker, it's just devastating when these lives are cut short--he didn't even get to play college, killed the night before his high school senior year bball opener. 😢

Len Bias was incredible, he was expected to be the next MJ and Larry Birds replacement on the Celtics. What a waste that he killed himself with Cocaine...

    • @AMM-MMA
      @AMM-MMA 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+Joe Cap I read article about that like 15 years ago in some magazine. Not sure if true but they said he used cocaine for the first time that night. He went to some house party and friends made him has some fun. Even if he survived I doubt he would have great career as expected considering this behavior to let someone makes you use heavy drugs.
To be very successful in sport you need talent (he had it) but also to be smart, surrounded by good friends and family, live healthy, rest much, to have passion and working ethic. And luck a bit. Even Bryant and MJ had some downs but all the rest were on extreme. Out of basketball Novak Djokovic and Federer (even I stopped being his fan since Djokovic have appeared) are one of the best examples what you should do to become true legend.

Nobody had more physical tools than Len Bias. If you could draw up a blueprint for the perfect basketball player, Len Bias would be the template. Had he possessed Michael Jordan's unreinguishing focus he would have been the greatest player ever. Instead he blew his NBA career and his life in a sea of white powder. Another tragic detour was taken by the brilliant Earl "The Goat" Manigault. Perhaps the greatest street yard player ever, he competed with the then Lew Alcindor at Brooklyn Prep. Alcindor was revolutionizing the game at Power Memorial in New York. After he became Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Kareem said that The GOAT was the best he'd ever seen. Heroin was the Goats undoing. All the talent in the world is often undone by a losing attitude and lack of discipline.

I remember Hank Gathers the year he died playing against LSU (at LSU). The had Chris Jackson, Stanely Roberts a 7 footer over 300 lbs, and some guy named "Shaq". Gathers at 6'7'' dropped 44 on them that game, going against 3 All Americans.
The saddest to me is Len Bias death. The day he was drafted #1 to the Celtics, he kills himself with crack. He would've been going to the raining NBA Champs alongside Bird, McHale and Parrish. Can you imagine that team!? Although I recently heard Bird say, "if Bias would've lived, I would've shut it down and retired."

Historically speaking, the biggest streetball legends not in the NBA (I'm not counting athletes succumbing before the NBA) :
    * Earl Manigault whom had competed in a Division 2 Program on the NCAA level : he was a member of the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls. He never played a minute during a game and he quit after one semester, but he made the team.
On the HS level, the GOAT finished high school at a private academy, Laurinburg Institute, in North Carolina, where he averaged 31 points and 13 rebounds per game.
    * The best streetballer ever, Joe "The Destroyer" Hammond was a former professional basketball athlete himself.
In the EBL, Hammond averaged 20.6 PPG, 4.7 TRB, 2.9 AST during his two years stint with the Allenton Jets before the Los Angeles Lakers drafted him :
    www.thedraftreview.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3354:joe-hammond&Itemid=342
Of course, other streetballer legends could be brought into conversation, but they weren't as good as the Destroyer : Hot Sauce, The Professor, Bone Collector...

Nick Galis is the all time best Fiba scorer in ppg and got the scoring title in every international tournament he played leaving guys like Oscar and Petro in the dust..the most amazing thing is that most of his scoring came from the paint with an overall .6 shooting whitch is indane for a 6 foot SG while the opposing teams were focusing their defenses solely on him knowing that if he goes unchecked it will be 45 on .7 shooting..on a moderate day he would give you 30 + no matter what!

Kid was a lottery pick out of HS the year after KG (his HS teammate) had he not broke his neck in that car accident his Sr. year. Plenty of film out there of him. (I came out of that area, 2 years younger than Ronnie so I know)

I understand that the other top guys had potential, but Oscar Schmidt destroyed every pro-defense outside the NBA for 25 years.
Italy (2nd best League in the world at the time), European Cups, Olympics, World Cups, Pan-Am Cups. I think N.°4 is a little underrated considering that 2 of the 3 guys in front of him basically never played organized basketball.

You can’t always assume how good or great someone WOULD have been. For example if Ralph Sampson had tragically passed away before he got to the nba people would have been saying he would’ve been the greatest ever. I recall Al McGuire saying that Ralph Sampson would go down as the GOAT.
Then there is the OTHER extreme. No one and I mean no one made a big deal about Sam Bowie being chosen before Michael Jordan until after their NBA careers went in complete opposite directions. Then and only then was the pick ridiculed.
I actually thought that Danny Manning after his performance against Oklahoma in the natl championship would be top 5 of all time and clearly I was wrong. My only point being we do not know if these guys would’ve been great in the nba.

    • @berachtdorian6191

In those days that seemed to be a fairly standard opinion of Danny Manning. I can remember hearing sportscasters using his name with the reverence due a future all-time-great. It was a huge disappointment to me that he didn't live up to the hype.

    • @bricefleckenstein9666

For folks like Roger Brown, you CAN have a lot of info about how good he would have been in the NBA.
But he DID play every year of the "other league" - the ABA - that ended up being BETTER than the NBA in their cross-league matched EVERY YEAR after the first couple.
I don't ridicule the Bowie pick - big men were still BIG at the time and the team that picked him needed a BIG MAN.
If he had been a late 1'st round pick, he would NOT be counted as a bust.

Oscar Schmidt was arguably the greatest scorer that ever will be and the only reason he isn't taken in the conversation as the greatest basketball player of all time is because when he was in his prime he preferred to play in the Olympics rather than going professional. Michael Jordan might have been the one Kobe looked up to when he was in the NBA but when he was learning to play the game and moving his first steps in his career Oscar was his idol

    • @Xeela10

You do realize that he is the only one in the list who even made the HOF, right ?
The mid '80s basketball landscape isn't the same as today, you can't apply the same criteria to every player. It wasn't the same at that time and the NBA didn't have the same kind of global range it has today. Oscar proved himself against USA in 1987 and dropped 44 against David Robinson (arguably one of the best centers ever)

You don't have the player who, in college, led the nation in scoring, was considered the #1 player in the nation, was going to be drafted #1 by the Knicks & honored by Madison Square Garden as one of the top 50 players ever to play at the Garden. Amend the list and give the #1 spot to: THE GREAT... SHERMAN WHITE, Long Island University RESPECT !!

  • @marx41mans
    @marx41mans 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I really enjoyed this list:
The only person on this list I never heard of was 4-Ocscar Schmidt, but his games looks like it would have definitely fit the 80's big man NBA.
knew very little of Hook Mitchell. Marq Haynes is probably one of at least 4 Harlem Globetrotters that could be on this list
I remember Lenny Cooke and all the hype around him like he was a Super star already with clothes and Jewels, looking back I think he could have been a serviceable nba player-but his lifestyle was too flashy and over the top then; he was 12 years too soon-he would fit in perfectly with today's entitled millennial ballers.
Why is there never a video of Pee Wee Kirkland or Joe Hammond playing? We have other grainy videos of other players from the 60-70's playing ball-all that drug money Pee Wee had and he never bought a simple video camera to capture his or Joe's skills?
---same thing with Earl the Goat, where's the "real" footage? I hope none of you all thought that was him!
lol-that was damn Don Cheadle in the biopic movie of his life!
i had saw Benji's name on lists before but only got to see him play when they made that ESPN 30 for 30 about him.
His game kinda reminds me of what Penny Hardaway probably looked like in high school.
I still remember sitting with my dad and watching Hank Gathers collapse on the on court-but we didn't learn until years later that it happened a couple times before while he was in college, kinda makes me think it could have been prevented.
And then there's Len Bias-the world still shakes it's head about him, nuff said
