- A documentary about the life of basketball's first mix-tape icon.
Jason Williams doesn't fit the typical definition of a legend. He never put up All-Star numbers and he likely won't ever find a place in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. "White Chocolate" left an impact on the game that can never be measured by numbers, but his legacy can be seen in the games of a whole generation of ball players. Williams taught the hoops world to embrace creativity, while also trying to find his own way over the course of his career. His journey to becoming one of the most popular players in the history of the game deserves to be shared and it re-writes the definition of a "legend" in the process.

Im 39 years old . I grew up throughout my high school years watching Jason Williams. I lived on the east coast and TNT had the Sacramento Kings on all the time . I’ll never forget watching him for the first time . I played point guard in high school but i was a scorer . I would shoot 25-30 shots a game . I was averaging 25 points . After my sophomore season entering my junior year something clicked inside me after watching a game when Jason had 13 assist . That entire summer i would take a basketball and not shoot 1 shot . I never went to a basketball court all summer . We had a county court house and it has about 50 steps . For 5-6 hrs a day all i did was up and down non stop . Rain or shine dribbling . By the time the summer was over my ball control and dribbling was totally next level . I couldn’t wait for basketball season to start . Our very first practice i brought the ball up left handed (i was a always right hand dominate dribbler ) crossed over and instead of pulling up i threw a laser down to my forward . After about 5 trips up the court and 5 assist with no shots coach pulled me aside and said to me when did become a complete player . I went on to have a school record 23 assist in 1 game breaking the previous record of 12 . I owe a lot of my playing achievements to seeing Jason Williams . He put a passion in me to get better overall and not be just one dimensional.

The thing JWill never gets credit for which made him such a nightmare to opposing players was his speed. He was incredibly fast and could penetrate past anyone with the ball in complete control. That gave him so many options- pass, shoot, whatever. Unless you watch full games now, it's hard to appreciate this other insane gift of his from just the highlights. @Trice- Well done on the documentary. You nailed it when you said his greatest contribution to the game was how it made fans feel when watching him. He was pure joy to watch.

Without really knowing i was thinking about his speed too. Theres no way an nba defense falls for all those fake plays unless jwills speed and threat of going to the basket forced them to guess
Saw his last high school game, (losing at states to Beckley) with Moss was unbelievable. U could see the “SuperCracker” magic i.e., the “now u see it; now u don’t” passes even back then. If he had been signed to stronger teams from the jump, his speed & misdirects would have made him a household name.
I watched him playing in a high-level SEC game for Florida against my Ole Miss and I was shocked to see that by far the fastest guy on the court for either team was this white guy. Florida would have won if Billy Donovan had kept him on the floor instead of constantly shuffling players.

JWill was a huge part of building that success in Sacramento. And he did helped make the Grizzlies relevant, which was a helluva task at the time….

The year before Sac drafted him they only had 4 nationally televised games. His rookie year they were scheduled for only 5 but when his popularity took off networks scrambled to get him on tv more. His third year in Sac the only team with more nationally televised games (27) was the Lakers.
Throughout his entire career he was in the NBA's Top 10 most popular list. The Kings and Heat set attendance records every year he was with them. Ratings for their games almost doubled. The amount of revenue he produced for the NBA as a whole is stunning and yet he never got his due. He's one of my favorite players of all time and I'm blessed to have been able to see him live. I'm happy he got himself a Championship, he certainly deserved it.

As someone who grew up watching late 80s and the 90s ballers, I loved watching the Reign Man, The Glove, The Human Highlight Reel, Vinsanity, Air Jordan, The Answer... But White Chocolate? Man, I tuned into SportsCenter EVERY morning to see what J-Dub did last night! Loved watching him play. Eternally underrated. One of my all-time faves! Much love and respect to him. In my book, an all-time great 🙏

When he played my Beloved Sonics. I was always scared he’d do something to the Glove. He and Stockton were scary to play against. But GP handled his biz along with the Reign Man Kemp and Sam Big Smooth Perkins with Detlef and Company. But White Chocolate was fearless. And he put fear in the eyes of defenders on the fast break.

crazy. i watched his entire career. i grew up watching jordan. when jordan retired i felt such a void. j will filled that whole void and i was such a massive fan. his game was so underrated. his assist to turnover ratio was always top in the league. the narrative of careless with the ball was so media driven. im from mississippi, and when the Grizz moved to memphis, they had a meet and greet in jackson. I showed up in a J Will jersey and he wasnt there. i was so sad lol. I eventually got to meet him when i worked for nba tv. i pitched that he show up on Area 21 with KG and they actually did it. it hit big for the channel. i met him and talked to him. it was so fire.

Some guys just play at a different level. He was so much fun to watch even if he was destroying your favorite teams. As the late Stuart Scott would say "You can't stop him. You can only hope to contain him."
One of my favorite players growing up. I'm a Blazers fan and while the Elbow Pass is legendary, the one play that really stands out to me was during a Blazers vs Kings game in Sacramento where he pulled up (without hesitation) and hit a 3 pointer that was maybe 4 or 5 feet beyond the the 3 point arch- which was a "bad shot" back in those days. This was either the 99-00 or 00-01 season... so more than a DECADE before Steph Curry and Dame made it normal to hit deep threes way beyond the arch.
He made basketball so much fun to watch.

Too often in society we let the amount of melanin a person possesses be the deciding factor of what we think of a person or their abilities (and not just in basketball either). ColorBlind just refers to letting someone's game speak for itself, not their skin color. Thanks for watching!

In fact, I'd go further and say that his natural speech is that of a black man which is even more uncommon. Usually you can tell that a guy is putting it on. Imagine JWill playing for D’Antoni in his system… dude would have been even more legendary. People these days go on and on about Kyrie’s wizardry with the basketball and forget that there were guys like this who were just as spectacular back in the day. Definitely one of the most exciting players ever. That SAC offense was beautiful to watch.

I remembering watching him and wondering why he didn't get more props because he was one hell of a baller and one of the best passers for his time
Ill never forget sitting 13 rows up from the floor at arco arena, my Dad and Uncle sitting beside me, all of us nervous as hell as the kings were on the cusp of a deep pkayoff run when JWill stole the ball and ran down and made his 1st NBA dunk. That arena erupted. It was absolute chaos after that dunk. People lost their minds. I will never forget it as long as I live. Greatest Kings moment of all time for me.
Williams/Moss couldnt be stopped. All of us in WV Appalachia were rooting for those good ol boys. Very cool times.
This man was not only a baller but a winner. No matter the team, he was in the postseason. Much respect. We are colorblind.

I was living in Gainesville, Florida when Jason came to play there, wow wow waza he was something to watch Showtime himself, he gave basketball both collegiate and professional a bit b shot and in my opinion he ranks in NBA top entertainers from earl monroe, pete maverick, Jason was the best and the game always needs a baller like him, much respect white chocolate!!!!!!!

I'm 50 yrs old, and in the UK,it was really hard to see televised games in the UK through the late 80s to the naughties,hardly anything live,only 1 TV channel showed games back then,and although we had the pleasure of watching the passing of the torch from Jordan to Kobe,it was Jason Williams we all wanted to watch back then, especially in the UK he has a massive fan club here too. As the game started to be played above the rim and became much faster and about dunking etc,yawn.lol,
Williams was like a throw back keeping the grace of passing and teamwork in the game so to speak.

That's right Jake. Manu Ginobili, kuwait leonard, Kevin MacHale to mention a few are that kind of players you like to watch, I saw this man Jason Willians playing and I tell you he was a Natural, Gifted Talented plus his Love or basquetball. And in the end got his Ring well deserved.

As a Gator grad and a big fan of the Heat, I’ve followed his career closely. The word “anticipation” comes to mind when I think of JWill as every time he touched the ball you wondered what he was going to do that you’ve never seen before. The problem that he ran into in the mid part of his career is he would sometimes feel the need to make a fancy pass rather than a safe one, which led to the increase in turnovers, which you just can’t have as a point guard. He may never make the HOF, but he’ll be remembered forever for his flair and innovation.
Love that. "Anticipation" definitely comes to mind when thinking of J-Will. You never knew what you were about to witness! One of my favorite aspects of his career is the way he developed himself into a more reliable floor general as he reached Memphis and Miami. He knew that if he wanted to lengthen his career and eventually win a championship, he'd have to become more of a true PG. Thanks for watching!
