    To expand a little on what you said in this video; similar to the Baki series, Dragon Ball also has the martial artist mindset as a theme but goes about it differently. Goku is the ultimate idealised image of a martial artist: always up for/ looking for a good fight, constantly challenges himself and is always training to become stronger and in a way it can be argued that’s his greatest strength. He encapsulates the mindset of “The only person I truly need to defeat is myself” in other words, he constantly strives to be better, to be stronger than who he was yesterday.
    Contrast this with the people he fights (and always defeats). Freeza (and every other major villain in the series) uses his strength for domination and as a symbol of superiority over those weaker than him. He doesn’t hold the same type of mindset when it comes to fighting as Goku does. He was handed the whole universe on a silver platter and was constantly reminded no one could ever topple him so he never felt the need to strive to be a greater fighter.
    I really like how the villains immense strength almost seems arbitrary (Freeza was born naturally strong, Cell was created in a lab using the DNA of earths strongest fighters etc.) because it really helps the viewers empathise with Goku more since we constantly see his struggles to reach his goals. It’s the ideas of hard work vs natural talent, self improvement vs self preservation and the love of fighting vs the love of power that are constant throughout this series.

    Great analysis as always 👍🏿 really appreciated you tackling the symbolism of the genku dama and how in so many ways its the perfect attack to combat an entiry like frieza; The will of the universe versus the machinations of a single evil tyrant

    Great analysis, never actually seen people delve into why they like Freiza likes this, I think there is more to the desire than just fighting in regards to Freiza, I feel like he had a tiny bit of faith in Freiza so he could change with him giving Freiza a bit of his energy so he could survive which makes the entire thing with Uub being the protector after Buu's death a lot more fitting thematically. Need a read tho so I'm interested to see how my interpretation changes(or like get strengthed Ig). Also love how you discuss the idea of Goku's desire goes back on his arc of accepting his saiyan blood.

      That’s true but he didn’t know about his father at the time and even if he did by his own admission he doesn’t care about the sayians and suggests that their own actions caught up to them

    I'm curious,do you think that Toriyama had these themes you brig up in mind when he was first drawing this battle?

    • @SephTheSin
      @SephTheSin  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah I reckon he did, he’s been pretty consistent with themes and character arcs across the 300+ chapters up until this fight, and Gokus arc especially has always been quite clearly written leading up to this, I don’t think he planned out specific themes in advance as by his own admission he writes on the fly but the overall themes of this fight probs where planned or if not just naturally extended from what’s previously written, like I don’t think back during the King Piccolo arc he had the idea for Freiza planned out but probs had the vague idea of Goku fighting someone who is his complete opposite in mindset, it would be a natural escalation from antagonists like Tien and Piccolo who do share a lot of traits with Goku but only differ on a few key points, just my opinion on the matter though

      @GogetaEiyuuYamcha ปีที่แล้ว +5

      When you say "had them in mind" I think it's not quite that simple. Every artist, every person has their own experiences and world views and stuff. For example, even if you don't INTEND to write a story about how much it sucks to be poor and how establishments don't try to help you, if you lived through that then you may write it without realizing it because you write what you know at the end of the day. I think a part of media analysis is finding out what themes the author intended to get across as well as which parts come from deeper in the author's mind.

      @@GogetaEiyuuYamchayeah you’re right bro. That would make complete sense especially since Toriyama himself wrote down that he designed Frieza from the monsters of his childhood fever dreams / nightmares (def his 2 more monstrous forms) & designed his personality to reflect Japanese real estate brokers / mortgage financers / bankers (think about how similar the Rothschilds are to him. Profiting off of global wars that are nothing personal to them & funding more to happen)

    • @zacharybenard1076
      @zacharybenard1076 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SephTheSintotally agreed & that would make sense the previous antagonists had such an easier time redeeming themselves compared to Frieza which has taken him decades not just in the series but in real life it’s been 30 years until he was able to reform enough to just ‘peacefully’ coexist in the universe without forcing the Z fighters into a battle to the death, like he was able to peacefully depart from the capsule corp after the TOP, didn’t put up a fight at the end of the Broly movie & flew off, & didn’t kill Goku & Vegeta when he had the opportunity to in his new black form. He wasn’t able to coexist in the same universe as Goku post Namek after he survived, the first thing he said after waking up from the intense surgery was to tell his Father to set a course for Earth. Goku would’ve had no issues letting him live & probably would’ve even let him stay on Earth but nah he had to force Trunks into killing him there was literally no other way to handle him at the time

      Tbf I think this is a flawed question in it of itself because themes are simply the ideas a story explores. Whether or not the artist intentionally put them there is irrelevant (most artists don't actually have concrete ideas about what they want to explore. They usually just have a backbone at first and go along with it with the process), because what really matters is what we get out of it
      These themes are consistent with the characterisations that Toriyama has provided for his characters, especially Goku and Frieza, which culminates in the fight.

    this may sound weird but it's a bit like Lord of the Rings, Sauron isn't destroyed by Aragorn, the heir to the throne and the one true king. He's destroyed by two short hairy guys who are willing to risk everything to protect their home and their friends. Likewise, Freize isn't defeated by the prince of Saiyans, he's stomped by what's basically a hillbilly Saiyan who doesn't want him messing with his home and friends.

    I still dont aggre about your opinion about super Goku, i know being goofy is in his charecter but he was also wise. As he stopped gohan from fighting semi-perfect cell and also was the one to see gohans true potential, not noly that he was a master class fighter as he was the 1st to achive mssj which even vegeta could not do even tho he is a genious by his own right. But currently In SUPER goku asks vegeta WHY IS HE MEDITATING??

    • @SephTheSin
      @SephTheSin  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I completely agree on that point, that’s why I specifically say ‘most of his portrayal in super’, if there’s one thing I hate about Goku in supers it’s how naive they make him, Goku isn’t dumb and as you said should not be questioning mediation for one minute, just because you disagree with him being written to be intelligently inept doesn’t mean you can’t at least acknowledge how well written his attitude and actions are, I guess I more so was trying to defend peoples complaints about Goku risking the universe or putting people in danger just to fight all the time, I’m working on a big Goku video so should hopefully go into more detail there on the pros and cons of Gokus writing in super

    Lord beerus is the one who ordered Frieza to destroy planet Vegeta.

    • @SephTheSin
      @SephTheSin  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes in retrospect we now know that’s true but when this fight was being written that wasn’t the case, as far as what’s told to us in the DB manga it was his fear of the saiyans that led to him wiping them out, and even in Super his fear of them is expanded with him not only fearing the super saiyan but also the super saiyan god

      @@DEVTHRVYgood… the other backstory was cringe. I don’t mind Beerus’ character as some others do but they didn’t have to ruin an iconic backstory with it. I also think the 5cm taller wish was retarded, especially the reasoning “something I learned from Earth’s hell, not being able to die cuz of immortality would result in unending misery” like yeah I agree but why’d you learn that from Earth’s hell bro you were dead if anything not being able to die would ensure you never have to go back there.
