My Dad grew up as a dairy farmer. He originally plowed fields with a twin horse team and a walk-behind plow. He still says the greatest invention known is when they came out with the plow that had a seat on it.
Dad just turned 87.
@@IMDunn-oy9cd my dad grew up on a farm to he said the horse drawn combine was the worst thing ever the adults thought it who pull him in and thrash him lol

Lord knows that was a difficult time for a lot of farmers and we were lucky and blessed to be able to survive and hang on.

We used to run 3 two row Roanoke Hustler peanut combines with 3 JD 2955s and they were the fastest pickers in the field.Ole yellows could run rings around KMC and Bushhog.
Not very many people get to do what they love for a living. I can't imagine being able to do what I love to make a living.

I have one low land spot that ALWAYS grows coffee weeds when plowed. Those are deep rooted weeds

Is a dry land field just a field with no pivot or irrigation? It still fascinates me how you check peanuts to see if they are done, a chart and sorting, very rudimentary for all the technology we have today. it seems simple is sometimes still the best.
Yes mam, dry land is a non irrigated field.

I'm 45 years old, I can't remember a single kid in school that was allergic to peanuts back then. The government actually had peanuts included in all public schools lunch programs. I wonder what's different know, vs then. Do any of you know what I mean? Now, you hear if peanut allergies a lot

After you dig up the peanuts, is there a certain amount of time that the plant needs to lay out before you can separate the nut from the plant, or can you do that immediately?
Usually a couple of dry days. Hopefully you don't get caught with your pants down and catch rain after digging them.
@@jamesrobertgrimes What is the reason for allowing it to dry first?
@@IMDunn-oy9cd they will come off the vines easier and the moisture content has to be fairly low when they are sold or you'll spend more time on the dryer that will cost you. I don't remember the ideal moisture content but I think it's less than 10%. I'm not a peanut farmer, my dad worked as a peanut inspector for 40 something years and I've had a little bit of exposure. My parents still lease out a good bit of the family farm for peanut production though.
“Shake your nuts to see if they’re loose”? Have to try that on my girlfriend.
You can oddly hear all of them if you shake them, go ahead and shake them dad.

We didn’t get any. We did catch an inch from a thunderstorm on a Friday so that helps

Perfect timing though. We finished our corn harvest on Monday before the storm rolled thru on Wednesday (all day). Thankfully, we never lost power.
And the rain was a Godsend on our peanuts.
But we haven't had a drop since .
We'll be digging in a week. A good rain now would really help us get them out of the ground.
Cotton looks great. Loaded with balls and open about 1/3 up.

What happens if you run over a baby deer or get a Rattlesnake in your machine.
It happens. Picking cotton has a better chance of running a deer in the header. Rattlesnakes are in the wagons are common. Somehow make it through the picker in harmed
