Thanks I just got growlight and made a great center with auto fan outlet and plenty of growing space 31.5" height as last season I only had 10" and a late spring set me back. Got some fine seeds from you folks and they did well every one love the Brad's Atomic grape as first choice.and Terracotta and Brandy wine we simply love. I agree. I stopped using Dawn dish soap which has dye in it to make it blue. I can't imagine putting that into my potting soil where I am trying to grow homegrown organic vegetables free from chemicals.
@@garden4life622 Even w/o dye it's no good. Dawn also contains 1 4-dioxane which is considered a groundwater contaminant. It's safe for washing animals but I don't want to eat it.
I know I'm late to the party but one thing I've noticed in my noob gardening journey is *not* using seed trays. I bought a bunch of cheap kiddie pools and filled them with soil, punched holes in the bottom as you do. Some came with holes from damage so I got a discount hehe. I ended up using these kiddie pools for my excess seeds that did not go into my seed trays. I planted them all on the same day and the kiddie pool plants grew 2x-3x faster. These were a wide variety of odds and ends like peppers, long beans, eggplant, mini water melon. They also did not suffer from being replanted. I can understand that in some cases you would need seed trays to move things around when you are dealing with thousands of plants but maybe the home gardener does not need this and should always direct sow..?
direct sowing is less time consuming and less work, but starting seeds in trays/container has benefits such as improved germination, being able to plant earlier, survival rate of seedlings, etc.
@@pineappleparty1624 Perhaps the seeds had more access to nutrients than seeds in trays? Interesting that you had good success with the kiddie pool. I will try something a bit smaller next year and see how the seedlings grow. Cheers.

How do you keep the crops from not being leggy? The lights were up so high. At home I keep the lights close to the seedlings so they don't stretch and become leggy.

We will pass the suggestion on. Most crops will be transplanted about 2 weeks after your last frost date, But it depends on which crop you are growing. Your transplanting time revolves around your frost date and crop type!

About the fan I just built my seed.starting center and install a automatic switch as many uses in the bathroom venting so that should be handy.
Yes, you need to bring them outside into direct sunlight for increasing amounts of time over the course of about a week. Too much direct sun initially will burn the leaves and can kill the seedlings.
different seeds require different temperatures, but having a temp of around 70F - 80F should be good for most commonly planted garden seeds, and yes a sunny porch should work well, however you want direct sunlight for atleast 12 hours per day, if not, you my need to add some supplemental lighting
Given that it's highly concentrated, you would want. to use less of this dish soap if you use it at all. Any kind of dish soap works; there's nothing particularly special about Dawn.
The soap just acts as a surfactant to help maintain the moisture in the soil. There's no exact measurement. We just use a good squirt per wheelbarrow full of dirt.

normal potting soil you can get from a store will have about 30 days of nutrition in it and will work fine i also use a little bit of compost in the mix because they are still small they dont need a lot i just potting up my summer squash to 1 gallon pots and they will stay their for atlease a month and i will give them some 4-5-5 or some type of basic ( nutes) until i feel like the last frost is gone for me it is in april some time

I'm considering switching over to soil blocks, since affordable seed cell units are very flimsy, and only last a couple of years at best with careful handling. I noticed you don't use soil blocks. Is it ease of operation and handling, or something about how well the seedlings perform in cells vs blocks?

I wouldn't add it to your garden soil. We just use the soap as a surfactant to keep the moisture even in the tiny seed staring cells. It's not necessary for germination, but it sure helps the soil from drying too much in our greenhouses when we have thousands of seedlings to care for at any given time.

I noticed some commercial farmers put perlite over the top of their seeds
From my understanding that's to make sure they don't grow mold or algae, just to soak up any extra moisture. :) Hope that helped.

we use about 100 liters of soil at a time!

So you make your own potting mix with peat and perlite? What proportions do you use? Then you add some gypsum and a squirt of Dawn dish soap?
we us pro-mix, which already has the peat, vermiculite and perlite mixed, then we add gypsum and a few drops of soap!

Just squirt the soap over the soil a bit, add some water and stir well.
May I ask which pro mix you use? I have a bale of pro mix premium potting mix.
I noticed you don't use humidity domes, should I use them for seed starting at home?
They're not required, but if you notice that the seedlings are having a tough time shedding their seed coats, a humidity dome can help.

If they start getting leggy, you can definitely bring the lights closer. Just avoid touching the lights as the bulbs can scorch the plants.

a couple teaspoons are added, the soap helps to both kill and repel bugs!

We sometimes fertilize with fish emulsion! and yes the gypsum is for nutrition!

As daniel said, potting soil with some compost works well! You can also use fish emulsion to liquid feed!

Why would you need lights in a transparent green house?
When growing in winter with short days and low light intensity, supplemental lighting goes a long way!
