A time when the British built amazing planes of their own.

true. Although a lot of their joint ventures are successful and impressive, the old warbirds have their own British charm

Amazing that this took its maiden flight in 1943. British jets really were ahead of the game.

I suppose you are right, the Germans did get a jet fighter into the air first,,,,a whole 5 weeks before we did.
And the Vampire wasn't as advanced as the Me262,
It was faster, had a longer range, a better rate of climb, carried a bigger payload and did all this with only one engine when the 262 needed two.The engine was also very reliable and easy to work on with a long service life unlike the 262's engines that needed to be sent back to the factory for a total rebuild after 15 running hours (if they hadn't blown up, which many did)
But no,,you are right, the vampire wasn't as "advanced" 😆

And the Russians bought and copied R. R. Nene engines, not Junkers Jumo.
Anyway, severe shortage of materials, lack of motivation of the workforce including prisonners, competition between planes manufacturers subjected to Hitler's absurd whims... Many reasons why Me-262 was certainly nicely drawn and innovative (in comparison to Gloster Meteor's classic design) but above all unreliable. It's stunning they could start a serial production on such a new plane during ending war, with massive bombings and all...
And yes I really enjoy seeing Vampire or Mistral flight. Graceful.

I flew WZ 507 when it was on charge to Marshalls Radar and ATC school, RAF Shawbury in 1964. I think we had 20 T11 Vampires and some Piston Provosts. At that time it was marled with a letter 'C' on the nose...

That's very quiet for a jet aircraft, still it's a classic from the golden days of British aviation.

ALL military aircraft (of whatever era) should be forced to fly the Mach Loop, a kind of...right of passage.

a plane that can’t even travel mach 1 unless going into a long steep dive, let alone handle the forces. completely goes against what the mach loop is known for.

The Mach loop is known for this 🎓

The Mach Loop (also known as the *_Machynlleth Loop,_* Welsh: Dolen Mach) is a series of valleys in the United Kingdom in west-central Wales, notable for their use as low-level training areas for fast aircraft.
Actual flying speeds & flying times during flying in the area are limited.
