Can you compare the 2022 iPad and keyboard case to an Air and a IPad Pro? All 11 inch as the 12.9 is too heavy to carry with a keyboard case.

Hey man, it's completely unrelated to this particular video, but I'm planning to buy an 11 inch iPad Pro. Will you be going to update your battery drain test with the new M2 iPad Pro? I would be curious to see the difference between the 3rd and 4th gen, especially since I'm worried the new Apple Pencil Hover feature could drain battery. Thanks!!

Im happy with my m1 MacBook Air and it has been amazing, 256 is enough for me as I store most of my larger files on my 1tb ssd, I took it for a 3 day vacation and I did not have to charge it even once even with photo edits, exports and imports and watching movies👍

Finally an honest discussion!!! I'm starting uni in September to study photography and honestly it can be overwhelming knowing whether to go for the best of the best or to go reasonable - I think future proofing is important but ultimately everyone has a budget!

You do not need anything close to a top of the line computer. You barely even need an M1 Air. do you think that professional photographers used to just labor and suffer all day with useless computers until the newest MacBooks came out?
Future proofing is bullshit don’t do it it’s not gonna help you at all and you’re just gonna end up wasting money for a machine that you don’t need that is probably gonna be replaced in 5 to 7 years at the most anyway if you do actually use it for anything more than just editing photos
If you’re really that concerned about “future proofing”, get a 16” M1 Pro in case configuration

I like that you mentioned how users obsess over one product or feature. This is how I have felt ever time I hear about the SSD on the M2 Macbook air. I decided to buy this one as I will be keeping it for years, it's replacing my 2015 Macbook Pro. I've never noticed the difference in disk speeds. I also never save anything locally (except apps) most of my files are on iCloud or OneDrive. But I've definitely noticed the improved design, sleeker screen, and more convenient charging. A few of my friends have the M1 Air and I personally see it as a step back. Although it is still a great computer.

I see a lot of recommendations to avoid the 8GB version. I've been using an 8GB air since they came out with zero issues. The performance is always snappy. This laptop gets used for browsing, netflix, light gaming, and light audio production. If you are on a budget, and don't use any applications that are memory intensive, don't be afraid of the 8GB M1/M2 Air.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  ปีที่แล้ว +37

I agree that for now, 8GB can work. My concern would be long term - where the m1 would still be plenty good an the ram may become insufficient.

@@TechGearTalk When Apple drops the M1 Air as a target for the newest OS, the 8, 16, and 24GB models will all be dropped indiscriminately. If the money isn't an issue, and you want to future proof as much as possible, by all means get the 16+GB model. We've reached a point of tech maturity where software isn't requiring the dramatic increases in memory that is used to. There was a youtuber that tested (using a VM) the minimum memory that Monterey required to boot, and it was well under 1GB. With 2GB, it was pretty usable. Ironically, it's my 16" i9 32GB Macbook Pro that I bought in 2019 that's fallen into disuse. It was intended to be my powerhouse laptop, but overheats and throttles almost immediately if I'm running a Window VM and using a 4k monitor at the same time. That was supposed to be my long-term mac but buying all that CPU and memory was a waste. It's been replaced by a work-supplied 14" M1 Pro

Just upgraded from the iPad 8th gen to the iPad Pro 11 inch 3 rd gen. It’s a massive improvement. Never owned a laptop of any make. Need it to run DAWs to record and arrange hardware synths and bass guitar. Also a little bit of gaming , but it’s mainly for electronic music production. I have around £1800 and I’m really cautious of ordering the wrong one. Going for the 512gb and definitely going into a shop to have a look and feel of them. Think I might sell the iPad Pro on. Thanks for your advice and video. Just wish I knew which one to definitely get. I’m disabled so can’t work or get out much. It’s going to be used all day . I’m so impressed with the IPads . Used PCs a little but not a computer person.

Excellent advice. I reviewed my actual use case and ended up getting a refurbished 16/256 Mac mini to work with my studio nano display and an older Dell 27 in 4K. This is because I have a 2 TB iCloud account that I share with my family and mostly work in my study.
I supplement this with my early 2015 MBP which is still superb for day to day use.
My work then bought me a 16/512 MBP M1 which I keep there now so saves my backpack weight.
Old good stuff still works well. Of course, the 2015 MBP will not take the next MacOS but it will still work with Windows via parallels and bootcamp. I also upgraded the SSD to 1 TB for about $130. It was probably the best ever MBP on build quality and ports etc. I didn’t have any screen delaminating issues as I think that was just a bad batch.
My daughter still eyes it up for the ‘when you don’t need it dad can I have it’ time.

Back in 2013 I bought a Macbook Pro 15 and overpaid by "specing" it out. It has a 2K display, 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD, and a dedicated GPU. Almost 10 years later the thing is till relevant for today. It runs the latest Mac OS, boots up in seconds, and is very responsive. 10 years is a long time so I did end up replacing my battery myself twice, but it runs smooth and I just don't need to upgrade as I have a desktop gaming PC for power use and my MacBook Pro for web browsing and watching videos.

I bought the MBA M1 a year and a half ago, and it works great! The one issue I have, is the fact that it only has the two USB-C ports. I have a hub to give me more ports, because I’m getting my first external display. However, I do wish I didn’t have to have the hub.
I bought the MBA because I’m a beginning content creator. But, I made the mistake of going high on storage (1TB) and low on RAM (8GB). I’m going to continue to use the MBA because it works great for my needs right now, but I can tell eventually I’m going to outgrow it.

One mistake a lot of people ignore. Buying a new computer when your old one works fine. I have a 2012 Macbook Pro with a 1TB SSD and 16 GB ram. It still works fine. I couple of years ago I replaced the keyboard and battery foraround $150. I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with a 2TB SSD. And I have a super cheap PC. I don't really need the high powered stuff for making high tech videos. I make videos with powerpoint slides, which don't require a lot of computing power. Yes, my old computers one day will fail, but in the meantime, they work fine enough for my needs. Yes, you don't get upgrades after a while, but again, the old versions work fine for me.

Is it wise to only buy my new mac from Apple or is Costco a good choice as well? Also, while I do not do any video editing I do download art videos and watch those often for a few hours or longer at a time. Would the MacBook pro be the better choice given it has a fan for cooling with these long videos? I currently have a 2014 MacBook pro that has sufficed just fine. I can no longer do updates on it but it is still working but I obviously will need to upgrade in the near future. Should I decide to get the MacBook pro, does it pay to wait until 2023 for the newest one to come out? I'm concerned if I get the MacBook air, it will not handle the long videos that I watch for art classes but maybe it would be fine. Any advice is welcome and thank you for the videos!

This has been really helpful. I've been vacillating between the M2 MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro 14. The base M2 Air is perfect for my travel needs (I have plenty of power and storage in my desktop Mac). But that Pro is so tempting, especially when it's on sale and is close to the cost of a spec'd up M2 Air. However, I wouldn't be taking advantage of the Pro's power, additional ports, beautiful screen, or other features often enough to justify it. My solution (subject to change without notice): a refurbished M1 MacBook Air.

What would you recommend for someone who just wants a laptop that will last a long time? I'm typing this on a circa-2012 or 2013 Macbook Pro because my 2018 Macbook Air died. It leaves me wondering...are pros built better? Or was 2012/2013 a better era for manufacturing quality? Or is it just dumb luck? (I also realized my Macbook Air barely had enough storage to handle its own OS + required updates by the end, so it seems like a very finite lifespan unless you buy a model with upgraded storage.)

I’d go with the new MBP 16 despite the extra weight. If you were working on client sites or with other people the larger screen gives much greater productivity. I kept my MBP16 i9 for that reason and the fact I can still use bootcamp for pro applications in Windows like MS Project and Visio professional. I was tempted by the new MBP16 but I only got my i9 in 2020 and it’s still got 7 months guarantee left from the seller.
For WFH get an M1 Mac mini 16/256 refurbished and then a high quality 4 or 5k 27 in screen. Your eyes and back will both thank you downstream.

I am thinking about it too (14 Pro). One reason is that it has an SD-card slot that I do not need. So I can put an SD-card there and use as extra storage for files, when 512GB is not enough for me in a few years.
There are special SD-cards manufactured for the purpose - fitting exactly in a MacBook Pro.
I currently type this on a 2014 MacBook Air with just 128GB SSD, but I use a 256GB (minimal size) USB-key next to the MagSafe to effectively have room for all files I need.

I’m glad you’re making these Videos. I recently bought a 16” M1Pro with 32Gig Ram. I’m a Developer/Student and initially thought of buying the Base 16” M1Pro. I can’t say how happy I am when I bought my Computer with 1TB SSD and 32Gig RAM since you can’t upgrade any of those. Also I travel everyday but still prefer the 16 Inch because of the Screen Real estate. Edit- Could you please make a video on some Note Taking Tricks and tips on the new iPad Air/Pro. Cheers!

Wow that’s a very expensive tool to take into college but if it works, great.
Note taking - if you need to share notes and use on multiple platforms OneNote is excellent. If you are sticking to an Apple ecosystem then Apple Notes is brilliant and has lots of great features that are not obvious. I use both. OneNote for my work as a university lecturer but Apple for everything else. I love the ability to make notes on my iPad, iPhone and Mac and instantly be able to see them on all my devices via my iCloud account. I also share these with my family members where relevant.

I made the mistake of getting the 14 inch m1 macbook pro. I thought the size will be perfect as i have used 14 inch laptops before without any problems. But now i m having neck and eye problems due to long hours of work and study. I would suggest everyone, if you don't travel with your laptop get a 16 inch as the size is really helpful. Now i m planning to get a monitor to solve this issue.

Hi there, im looking at getting in to coding xcode and running virtualization software. I am going to get the 14' Macbook Pro M1 do you think the 8core CPU and 14core GPU is sufficient or am i better of going with 10core CPU and 14core or 16core GPU? Or will this thermal throttle with that configuration and will my battery greatly suffer, will the fans be too noisy? I will be getting 32GB Ram and 1TB SSD. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated. Great video by the way 🙂

    HI TGT......I have a question....
At the moment I’m looking to replace my 2013 MCBpro 15”. I am completely naive regarding M1 chips, etc. What my needs are: I’m just breaking into voice acting so I need to record and run Adobe Audition, or any good DAW, I also need to do picture & video editing; but nothing crazy. I make shorts with my kids for fun, etc. But we’re considering moving into longer pieces, longer films. And I’ll also be using the same machine for podcasting/streaming etc. And of course be doing day to day workflow/life stuff. How much power do I need? I went way overboard in 2013 but I’ve had a machine that’s been great for almost 10 years. I would rather err on the side of caution and have too much “power”, than to regret later. But I also don’t want to go crazy, overspend on what I will never need when I can spend that $$ on other equipment. Thank you for any advice you can give me!

Buy something for yourself and buy it because you want it. Too many situations where people hold back on fancy stuff because they don't "need" it. These machines are getting ridiculously efficient and 99% of people won't NEED one. If you want a top of the line device to watch TH-cam on and type up documents, THAT'S OKAY. Don't hold back on something you initially wanted because someone else told you that you didn't need it.
Also, don't get yourself into the mindset that BECAUSE you buy a top of the line device, all of the sudden, you WILL use it to its fullest capabilities. Buy something because that's what YOU want. It doesn't matter if you don't use it at 100% - most people are in the same boat. Wanting something and buying it because you want it is OKAY.
On a side note, Apple's storage and RAM pricing is disgusting. Get yourself an external drive for a fraction of the cost. As for RAM, I guess you're screwed.

exactly. I am so fucking sick of people who don't understand technology asking me "why do you need more storage? why do you need more ram?" There are so many people who just don't get it. The reason the prices are the way they are is because the people who run Apple art communist scum of the earth.

You are gem of a person, i was looking for a laptop for my university needs and started from 12th intel to macbook 14(M1) and after watching your video i have realised that i should pick macbook air m1, which is most bang for the buck as per my needs, i was tempting towards 14 pro M1 but i have just decided that’s all wastage of money even if i can afford, i would get a 16 gb ram upgrade which i thinks is worth for a person buying his first and probably last laptop because & as far as storage is concerned i can see 256 gb is more than enough for my needs but i still have external ssd option available at all the time, how my decision?
