  • Sam Harris - Psychedelics, Meditation, and The Bigger Picture | Brought to you by Freshbooks (freshbooks.com/tim) and 5-Bullet Friday (tim.blog/friday).
    Sam Harris (@SamHarrisOrg) is a neuroscientist, philosopher, and author of five New York Times bestsellers. His work covers a wide range of topics-neuroscience, moral philosophy, religion, meditation practice, human violence, rationality-but generally focuses on how a growing understanding of ourselves and the world is changing our sense of how we should live. His books include The End of Faith, Letter to a Christian Nation, The Moral Landscape, Free Will, Lying, Waking Up, and Islam and the Future of Tolerance (with Maajid Nawaz).
    Sam hosts the popular Making Sense podcast and is also the creator of the Waking Up app, which offers a modern, rational approach to the practice of meditation. Sam has practiced meditation for over 30 years and has studied with many Tibetan, Indian, Burmese, and Western meditation teachers, both in the United States and abroad. He holds a degree in philosophy from Stanford University and a PhD in neuroscience from UCLA.

    ive had 7 mushroom sessions over 5 grams since the quarantine started. imo you don't always have to wait for the perfect moment to dive deep. sometimes it can be the deep dive that gets you thru your troubles or brings some much needed perspective. Our normal daily consciousness wants to calcify us into the status quo where mushrooms cultivate more of the antithesis to the norm. I'll feel myself at times getting to used to the rat race and know that I need a high dose to shake me out of the collective spell.
    so yea, its not always about waiting until your in a good space. the mushroom and other medicines can help bring in that good space.

    We just have to protect the five holes on our face. If it was a very deadly virus that wasn’t going away, we would be wearing bubble heads with 100% filtration.
    Bubble heads, pretty good for allergies, brake dusk and people with asthma in general. Would beat using mosquito spray too. Add some heating and air conditioning and people might actually like them.
    How about having your own oxygen concentration, fragrance or other dosing. Maybe even a way to time release medicine intake.
    Add some noise cancellation, sound projection. Why not go crazy and project some augmented reality.
    A bubble head, who wouldn't want one. Not some clunky zombie apocalypse thing but more like a head shaped clear grocery bag that can be swapped out that attaches to a collar draped over your shoulders.

    The long term effects of psychedelics are not good …as shown by mental health staff who deal with the resulting psychosis and meditation masters ( Buddhist monks who before they were monks tried psychedelics and now having very refined minds after decades of practice can very clear see the damaging effects on the mind of taking psychedelics). Perhaps Sam’s use has caused his much publicised delusion in reference to his views on Trump. Any seemingly beneficial results that people have are not real. See Ajahn Sucittos blog on this. He was the abbot of Chithurst buddhist monastery in England for many years and widely tried these drugs before becoming a monk. He speaks with wisdom and knowledge.

    Seems contradictory that Harris promotes meditation and mindfulness (a very inward journey), but then admits he gets into heated arguments and criticizes others "bad ideas" and political stances... Doesn't want to dig it to show others "they are wrong" (a closed mindset to assume his ideas are "correct") ... I don't know, It seems very egoic. Thoughts? @25:00

    • @neptunstraumfahrt9341
      @neptunstraumfahrt9341 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I noticed that, too. But, I think, it's fine. Promoting meditation and mindfulness doesn't mean, that he has to be perfect. Don't know Sam that well, but he seems to find a lot of benefit in mindfulness, we don't know what he would be like without it. I practice m&m, too and get caught up in ego very often, still it's a good thing to do for me. And maybe he is a greater scientist than spiritual guide.

    • @neptunstraumfahrt9341
      @neptunstraumfahrt9341 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, after listening for a while, Sam is probably the kind of guy who is so intelligent that his spiritual growth is limited by it. The buddha warned about that, Master Yoda as well. He likes his intelligence and being right so much, that he just doesn't want to let it go. I don't want to falsly analyse him, it's just his example is a revelation for me as well.

      @@neptunstraumfahrt9341 I've listened to Sam ever since he caught my attention on free will. I found myself excited that such an articulate, thoughtful individual literally confirmed (pretty much everything) I'd been wrestling with on that subject. This led me to listen closely to much of what he had to say on everything else; to enjoy his sparring with J. Peterson and others.
      I find myself in agreement that he does occasionally slip into displays of ego, but I don't mind that too much either.
      There was the one time when he challenged Noam Chomsky to an open online debate and behaved (quite frankly) like an angry teenager and this brought him down to a level, lower than I'd held him previously in my esteem. How on earth can someone who articulates highly complex concepts with ease be such a brat all of a sudden?
      Again, it's fine - he's fallible and sometimes his ego get's the better of him, like pretty much all of us experience.
      Despite feeling surprised (and a little disappointed) for a while I let it go and returned to enjoying his dialogues with various folk.
      Certainly he's a good and clever fellow who genuinely seems to enjoy exploration of both inner and outer space. A pleasure to listen to, more often than not.
      He's questioning and learning from the right pages, just like any good seeker does - and I think his advice is safe and from the heart. I wish him well.

    • @JamchesterBoozle
      @JamchesterBoozle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see why that's a problem or a contradiction? Sam Harris is exactly the type of person we need to criticise bad ideas, someone who is clear-minded and recognises ego more so than the vast majority of others. He actually said in this podcast, 'I'd love to be proven wrong on this point'. So he is open to changing his mind. He even said he had been reducing that style of debate with others in a public forum because of the current situation, so I think you might of misunderstood.
      Just one other comment, the very essence of meditation is to realise the ABSENCE of self, an inward self that is. The goal is to realise that the outward experience IS YOU! That's a very common misunderstanding. It's paradoxical and ironic that you used that as a contradictory point.

      Drugs don’t offer true help or peace for the brain. Meditation empties the brain, but the brain was made to think. Life without God leaves us with no meaning whatsoever, leads us into hopelessness, and causes many to fall into having to surpress the thought of annihilation of death.
      The beginning of wisdom is the recognition and respect of God, the kind One who created us and gave us the ability to feel emotions and to choose. He offers meaning, a reasonable explanation of the suffering in the world, and an important mission to work on in life that fulfills us and has eternal value.
      Sam Harris is an atheist, which is not a very reasonable or well-founded position. His teaching strips away all hope, causing the depressed to be more depressed, the hopeless to be more hopeless, and those who struggle with guilt to discover no possible way of relieving their heaviness.
      My earlier days were filled with hopelessness, depression, and heaviness. The God of the Bible has helped me tremendously. I feel peace and meaning because of Him. I just am sad to see the promotion of things that harm humans. These atheistic thoughts have true consequences for the humans that are influenced by them, and many will destroy themselves in their hopelessness.
