    I just feel the need to share my tattoo story. I got my tiny little minimal shooting star in pastel colors when I was 22. A guy I was desperately in love with designed it for me. I kept it for years, always thinking this is the tattoo I want. I met the tattoo artist through mutual friends, he worked at a shop and had all his gear but he was vacationing and basically roadtripping and he needed money to fund his trip so he was offering tattoos at my friend's house. He had a very professional (although mobile) set up. He had a book with all his art and tattoos he had done. He was honest and said he had only been doing it for 3 years but he was confident and I agree, his work spoke for itself. I showed him the design my friend made me and he hated it and tried to talk me into letting him do an awesome design that would be way better than this drawing I had. When I look back, I realize it is really not that good. It is super simple and I blew it up in my head because I was so enamored with him. anyway... I loved my tattoo! Now 15 years have gone by and the pastel colors are gone, it is super faded since it is on my neck and I think any tattoo would probably be faded 15 years later. I started to hate seeing it in the mirror and daydream about having it "touched up." Just the colors added back. So I finally got the nerve to schedule an appt with a very well known sought after tattoo artist whose shop is literally a few blocks from my house. A lot of my friends have tattoos by her and I actually had to wait for 6 months to get this touch up. I didn't mind because I was in no rush at all, I didn't even really care if it didn't happen. But then the day came, March 8, International Women's Day, I did not plan that! I told her my story and she just looked at me very genuinely and said we will make you something beautiful. That is when I gave it all up to her and said it is time for a change, this badly done tattoo had been on me for 15 years and it was a sad little faded shooting star. I initially thought I would get a few colors added. She asked hey do you want some kind of unicorn glitter magical tattoo and I was like HELL YES I DO! She kind of drew around it with a marker and held up a mirror and asked do I like this? I said I trust you girl, you are the artist! I can't even believe I let myself trust another person so much. She picked out the colors, it took about 2 hours and I can't even believe I have this work of art on my body now. It is so perfect, I seriously almost cried when I looked in the mirror afterwards (cheesy I know but it's true.) It feels great to have such a beautiful well done tattoo, she even put those little white dots to make it look like glitter, so pretty! It is very personal to me, no one ever sees it because my hair hides it but I know it's there and it's lovely!

    My friend put a deposit on a tattoo and was already to go and got in to an accident the day before ending up in hospital. She had her jaw wired shut and couldn't talk to the shop or the artist. Day of I went and explained the situation and showed pictures of her in hospital to the artist. The artist was so sweet she actually told me to tell her to come in to reschedule when she was better. 2 days later my friend got flowers a card and a balloon from the shop and the artist wishing her well and that they couldn't wait to see her again. Two weeks later she got her tat only it was changed from the original concept because of her accident. She now sports a beautiful pair of angel wings which sh wanted only underneath it says saved by an angel. Totally the idea of the artist to add the phrase as my friend could have died. Sometimes life throws you a curve ball and most artists understand that. My friend went back to get other tats done by the same artist and they are now good friends. She is more than willing to pay and tip because she knows that she'll come out with something amazing and unique.
    I love this video and have learned some awesome info I didn't know before. Thanks for such an awesome vid.

      Absolutely had an artist who was rude. He emailed me to cancel a few hours before the appointment and when I didn’t see the email and showed up on time excited for my appointment, he didn’t say anything abt the email and spent the whole appointment quiet, sour, and unenthusiastic. The design was a simple rose but it was my very first tattoo and I’ve been avoiding getting anything else since mostly because of how unpleasant that experience was. I was just 20 years old and really had no idea what I was doing but I really felt bad and emailed to apologize. I wish he had called me or had the shop tell me. I hate to think I made him work when there was somewhere else he needed to be.

    I do follow how not to get tattooed, and like a lot of their posts but I also think they bash too much people for making mistakes. Sometimes the messages from clients are really nice and they just don’t know what they can ask or not so instead of replying in a mean way and send the screenshot right to this IG account the artists maybe should just tell them what they did wrong. Because they probably just don’t know ! Well this doesn’t apply to mean messages and harassment at 1am nor weirdo pics 😂

    In the UK anyway, artists often ‘open their books’ and will answer emails for appointments between certain months and then not respond to any emails once the ‘books are closed’, this may be why people aren’t getting replies.
    But yeah, I most definitely agree with the comment about the two types of tattooed people!!

  • @VenusAD
    @VenusAD 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Tattoos are art. Art is sacred, personal, and requires a lot of talent, skill, and dedication. Artists deserve to be PAID for what they do. I cannot believe how many people think that tattooing is just some simple service that they should be looking for the best bargain on. I never flinch at tattoo pricing around here (150 to 200 an hour is pretty typical for a quality artist, depending on how much business they get). I just do the math ahead of time, figure out how long it might take, and then way overestimate that for my budget (including a 20% tip).
    Like you said, I'm really proud to carry a beautiful piece of artwork on my body to represent my own emotions/experiences, the artist's work, and how beautiful the art of tattooing is. I'm not even a collector, but I feel really strongly about this and the lives of artists. They way so many people take artists (both tattoo and others) for granted is terrible.

    “This is a luxury service, so expect to pay a luxury price tag.” Yes! Finally someone said this! I know so many people who have went to the “cheap” shop in town because the shop I go to is too expensive, and in a couple years their tattoos are fading and feathering. If you want a quality tattoo, ( why wouldn’t you? It’s on you forever ) you are going to pay the price for it!

    i have a question that maybe qcknd can't answer but as a person of color how are we supposed to know if a certain artist knows how to tattoo darker skin or ever has because i scroll through a lot of tattoo artists instas and there's rarely a poc person they've tattooed and it just makes me think if they are even willing to tbh

    • @ciitrouille9335
      @ciitrouille9335 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      tattooing dark skin doesn't require any different tattoo techniques but it requires some drawing adjustments. Some artiste don't know how to do those adjustments (it can be pretty hard with some artstyle (or even impossible like with micro tattoo or light color). I tattoo some dark skin and one of them was a nightmare because I could see the stencils well, I couldn't see if my line was solid enough and I have to clean the extra ink all the time to see better. You also have to explain and convince the client that not everything is possible. (I mostly talk about really dark skin) But even so I really wish to tattoo more dark skin and get, maybe, use to it. But I unfortunately don't have dark skin client (I'm in France and most of dark skin people's think it won't show of look good on them) and if I don't have picture of the two rare one I tattoo is because they wanted something not in my style or taste and I didn't want to have those tattoo on my portfolio (but I put everyone on story). So yeah is a lot more complicate than what people's think... (and some are lazy/racist asshole) but don't be scare to message then, try to send them the most accurate pic of your skin and be conscious of maybe not everything is possible. You have the video of Zulu tattoo or you want. He explain most of it

    I also just wanted to note that there are some cultural differences within the tattoo realm as well. (The obvious being tipping culture) I live in the states and most of the knowledge I had was about how it’s like in the US but I ended up getting my first tattoo in the UK so I was still a bit lost despite the extensive research I did. BUT the points mentioned in this video is very valid across the board for the most part and should be viewed by everyone looking to get a tattoo

    Ive only been getting tattooed for a year or two but Im slowly building my collection. I was very fortunate that I learned a lot of the "how-to's" from my close friend who has a full body suite and was getting tattooed before the culture blew up how it has in the last few years. Going to conventions is also a great way to learn about the culture and industry. I have made some of the mistakes that you list in the video (DMing artist) but you learn and I think that is what matters most to artists and those of the culture is that you have the willingness to learn. I think you said it best when you said to own up to the artist or the shop hand and let them know you are unfamiliar with the process. Again it shows the willingness to learn and do right. Love these videos and you, I'm constantly learning from them, keep it up!!

    BLESS. THIS. VIDEO!! I have been following that page for quite a while as well, and it's seriously mind boggling to me the things that people will say to artists, or assume about tattooing -- this video is a blessing. Seriously. This video alone summarizes the whole purpose of your TTT series (the number of your videos that you cited for already covering a topic or doing a deep dive speaks for itself!), and why education is SO important. Some people genuinely don't know how to approach an artist about getting a tattoo, and it can be a very daunting industry to get into. I know I certainly didn't know any better when I was first starting out, and it does take time to learn the lingo and understand the correct way to go about things. Some artists are really patient with new clients, and bless them for that in this day and age where more people are getting tattoos -- but that also means there are more and more rude and ignorant people out there as well.
    This is seriously one of my favourite videos that you've made, and you're seriously the best tattoo educator on this platform, no doubt.
    Love you!

    After working in as a desk girl at a tattoo shop, some of the things people do/expect are mind boggling.
    Although, I'm guilty of using a size reference vs actual measurements, even in face-to-face consultations. I have a tattoo that I said, "I want it about the size of my palm," which in person kind of works because they could see that and be like OK, it's this big and then make suggestions on whether it needed to be larger (it did).
    As for emailing your tattoo artist and wanting sketches, I understand wanting to see it and there's no harm in asking (politely!) but if they say that's not something they do, respect that and move on. I traveled to Arkansas to get tattooed by Katie McGowan, we did an email consult for a cover-up of all things...I sent her what I wanted, an image of the current tattoo with a ruler next to it, and showed up without ever seeing what she had in mind.

    My biggest thing now is finding artists that have photos of their healed work. I understand that the person they tattooed will have to come back, but I just don’t want to make the mistake of having another artist blow out one of my pieces I drew for myself on me 😐. I just want to see healed work along with everything else

    • @sycosquirl
      @sycosquirl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      DashofKayyy most of the time when a tattoo artist is done, and the canvas walks out the door, that’s the last time the artist will see that tattoo unless the person tags them online or comes back in for another piece later. Very rarely do artists get to see their work healed unless it’s on their friends or regular clients

    • @Minaaamii
      @Minaaamii 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My tattoo artist asked me to send him a picture of my tattoo after it’s healed. (Ofc not mandatory) but he said it’ll be great if I could send in a picture! Not many people actually follow through with it but he posts pictures of the few that gets sent to him. Then again, that’ll have to be on the clients for them to have a healed picture to post

    your conversation about "bargains" in tattoo reminds me of a passing comment my aunt made on a vacation, my aunt is a hairdresser and we passed a strip mall that had some cheap chain hair place that was offering $8 haircuts and she said "I wouldn't even pick up my sheer for $8" because she knows her value as a stylists, it's the same way with tattoo artists. They know how much their service and art is worth.

      15-20% is always good! Multiply the price of the tattoo (in this case you said 250) by 0.15/0.2, and that sum is how much would be recommended to tip :)

    You are so right about measurements - my tattoo is rather larger and somewhat 'wrappier' than my original iteration. But since it is an evolving work in progress (it is a fractal sleeve) I can measure up what I have and get the scaling right plus do some work with some marker pens as a sketch of the remaining canvas (it is currently on my outer arm and will pass through my outer elbow joint).
    I will actually add fiducial markings and a scale bar when I do my next round of sketches but that won't be until the end of next year.

    Just my wee additions for people looking for more advice. My artist is 3 hours away so we email for consultation the week before and she will send me a sketch for the design 2 days before the appointment. Her studio is comfortable with posting flash online so that's how she works but don't expect it, if you're worried then just ask. When it comes to tipping, I like to tip enough that it would make a difference to me if I was given it - so usually between £20 or £40. If you're worried about price, look on the shops website or shops from the same area to get a better idea, some areas have higher studio costs which will affect tattoo price.
    My final advice is, if you're nervous then just tell the artist and if you can, go in to the studio and talk to your artist or ask someone else who's been tattooed to help you. Don't run up to people in the streets or at their work, but a friend or join a tattoo community page (treacle tatts has a good Facebook account). Hope I can help someone.

    Hi i just have a question .. What if you get a tattoo and the artist posted a pic of it and then it gets taken down? What would be a possible reason for that?

  • @amberhobbs4519
    @amberhobbs4519 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    A question. What do you do, or how do you react when your artist hits on you or asks for your number? It's an awkward situation that I've experienced. At a shop that I like. I haven't been back since. Is that normal or inappropriate? Just wondering. Love your vids. :)

    • @hannam.814
      @hannam.814 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Amy Jons Totally inappropriate! If your artist Flirts with you, when youre not down for it, it can make the client extremely uncomfortable, especially since they are in a pretty vulnerable situation. So unless u were totally comfortable about it and didnt mind, i wouldnt go there again.

    I once emailed an artist (I was in another country, in my defense) and I sent like 5 pics kinda like "I like aspects of all these, like the outside of these two and the center of this one, and the placement of this" type deal. I felt so annoying but I was 18 and didn't know better. He actually appreciated it cause he said I gave him something to go off of but then gave him creative freedom from there, he said he appreciated the trust and artistic Liberty.

    On pricing, I generally ask during email consultations about how much it will be, letting the artist know I want to make sure to grab the cash. I think in 2018 when lots of people don't do cash regularly cash based businesses understand

    • @EmiliLuciaOfficial
      @EmiliLuciaOfficial 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tamsyn Lynn I always pay in cash for tattoos. Not sure why, maybe to avoid paying cc machine fees. I can usually get a price range depending on how long the artist think it will take.

    Also wanna say my tattoo artist is like an hour away it's ride to get there and I made a drawing consult for my next tattoo and honestly it was so unnecessary because my artist did a fantastic job on the sketch the changes were minimal but I left confident that I'll be getting an awesome tattoo.

    Love this! When I first started getting tattooed I never found artist through social media, but through my mom (who had a ton of tattoos, though not the best ones). I have some decent pieces, but since finding your channel all my tattoos have been works of original art I love. I'm still not great at contacting artists I find online so this video was great. I always get scared when my artists and I post my tattoos because I'm scared someone will try and steal it. I just cross my fingers and hope.

    Hey qcknd! Love your channel so much and I had a tattoo question I don't think you've gone over before. I get these weird white bumps on my tattoos, and now that I'm almost done with my sleeve I notice them way more. I don't know what they are or how to get them to go away. Maybe some way to exfoliate? Idk, maybe others have the same problem? Thanks!

    Hi qcknd, I've wanted a tattoo for a while, but have been afraid because I have darker skin. I've thought about emailing tattoo artists to confirm that it's possible, but I'm afraid that I'll offend them, when I really don't mean to. I've just never seen any tattoo artist I follow post pictures of dark skinned clients. And even in real life, the tattoos I see on darker people don't tend to look as clean. Do you think emailing would be the best way to go? Or maybe even talking to them in person?

    Oh wow, good to see this, because even though I'm getting my 4th tattoo in two weeks, but I've always had a back-and-forth through email or even WhatsApp (including sketches). It was always okay to give some (minor) adjustments to those sketches over text or email, so they could get those out of the way ahead of time. My next one will be from an artist that I've been tattooed by before, so I know this will again be the way we do it. But it's good to know that I really haven't had representative tattoo experiences! Now I know that if a next artist won't share sketches ahead of time, it's okay, really, it's normal. :)
