The way the factory Transmission cooler system works is... The Hot fluid from the trans (front fitting on the trans) runs to the cooler first... It goes out of the cooler then runs into the top port of the Radiator... It goes out the bottom of the Radiator (where it is now cooled) and to the rear port of the Transmission. The Idea of it running through the cooler to the radiator is to "normalize" the fluid temps on both the coolant and the radiator. Lets put it this way... if you get stuck in traffic on a hot day and you just have the Front mounted cooler... you have only the airflow from you fans that have to make it through the radiator and ac condenser... your trans temps will climb. If you run it through the radiator after the cooler now you have the radiator doing the work. I have done it both ways with my Suburban 2500 towing a 6k trailer daily and having both the radiator and the cooler work the best in all situations. I would keep it running through the radiator.
Wrong. Try again
I thought it was to help get the transmission up to operating temperature quicker on a cold day
The cooled down fluid comes out the top. This diagram in the video is wrong.
@dsmitteh you are wrong. Start your engine cold, then check the Temps on the lines top and bottom. The hottest line after a minute or two is your supply line. Usually, the top, not the bottom. Manufacturerers run it to the top first because heat rises.
@Robby Pro Guess every truck 99-07.5 Silverado or Sierra I've flushed, or added an auxiliary trans cooler to, someone before me hooked it up wrong. My return line has always been the top.
The cooler is supposed to go after the radiator cooler/heater. You need to connect it in line because you want the trans fluid to warm up and flow better in really cold weather and you want to return the coolest fluid back to the trans from your new bigger cooler.
I get that big it’s been going for 2 years now 40k alone and it’s been great 4l60 still holding 💪🏻
@@JoseFlores-fm3bmyou bypassed the radiator? how did it do in winter
@JoseFlores-fm3bm it's still wrong.
*this can be an issue for some that live in Cold Areas like up north, but like he mentioned in the video he lives in Texas, and i live in Cali and doesn’t get that cold, so it depends on where you live that can cause that issue*
I bought the same cooler for my 1988 Ford F250 diesel pickup. My truck has the C6 Ford transmission, those transmissions are a lot less prone to overheat and failure than the new 4L60E, but I figure it's cheap insurance so it makes sense. You can also run it in tandem with the factory cooler in the radiator which is what I did. They can be used on a bunch of applications. And, it is just that easy to install.
Do you have a link?
I would reccomend a trans remote filter too. I have mine located under the air filter housing
I was recommended to get this cooler for my tahoe the other day and seeing how easy the install is Im going to be doing it soon
I’m glad you are I’ll make a huge difference in temp wise and keep that 4l60e out of trouble , if you have any questions feel free to ask
@@JoseFlores-fm3bm is this considered a radiator bypass or is the transmission oil still cooled by the radiator?
@@TheBully010 he bypassed it
@@EsePlebeJosee so does the radiator need to be plugged up from where those lines were removed from or it doesnt effect anything not being open like that ?
A Mexican friend once told me that a crescent wrench was a Mexican socket set.
Great video! Very through, I'm installing mine this weekend. This video should make it a breeze. Thanks for posting
Thank you ! I’m glad this video is helping out , if you have any questions feel free to ask
@@JoseFlores-fm3bm what does the by pass value for doesnit helps ?
since you deleted the line how do u cover the hole that open on the radiator or do u just leave it be
Supply goes to the top, and return is the bottom. They designed it that way because heat rises. I believe there is an ANSI code for that?
wrong return is the bottom line
Think the right way would be with the inlet and outlet inserts facing up, because if not you will be only using actually 50% of the tru cool😞
Well I’ve seen a lot of people installing them the way I did and others upside down but they never say how much of a difference it made temp wise , me before the tru cool I was at 200-210 and now I stay at 150 all day long under normal and hard accelerations, till today it still hasn’t gone above 150 ,I’m not saying this method is better it’s just I haven’t seen anyone post before and after with the tru cool upside down
Jose Flores we’ll noted thanks
I spoke with the distributor and they stated that installing the cooler with the lines to the bottom actually maximizes efficiency.

Thanks for the Video My dude!! I have already ordered mine for my 07 silverado. Looking forward to installing. Thank you fro the video!!
No problem and I’m glad I could help , if you got any questions feel free to ask 💯

this was so helpful thank you 😎💕
Perfect I’m getting me one this week thanks man
Cool video, petty straight to the point. Thank you
Orale!! Mexicanada!!! I see foolios paying 50 to 80 bucks for bracket kits to mount that same cooler!
That's kinda a rare truck. rcsb z71 I want one
Very good video my man 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thank you sm!
Is it recommended to be installed on Chevrolet Tahoe 2017??
Any side effects after installing it?
On which temperature does it keep the gear oil? Hi
very nice. I am getting ready to do this on my 2006 sierra also
Thanks and glad to hear that ,if you have any questions about installing the tru cool just lmk I’ll be glad to help
I'm just connecting to the two lines already out there using 3/8 brass compression couplings
Good little diagrams man good video
I was told this cooler works best with the lines up other wise you’re not getting the the complete cooling benefits of it.
The stock cooler (same type, just smaller) is mounted hoses down.
I totally agree. Obviously there was nothing in that stock cooler. It all ran back to the trans. Hoses up would be the best way to insure all the tubes get filled. In my opinion anyways the factory don’t care about our stuff
Either way the rad it hotter then the 4l60 likes 200 -210 the heat kills em they r best around 160-180
I agree great job thanks man im going to try mine this weekend.thanks brother
Thank you I really appreciate it , It took me a while to edit but they’ll get better later down the road , and no problem if you have any questions lmk I’ll be glad to help
What if I still want have that line to the radiator. Because here it gets cold
just connect it in series. would be fine
Yeah I would recommend what he said since it’s colder up there
Clean install thanks, hey Do you think is the same one to install it into a 2009
Thanks , and it should be the same just mounting would be a bit different
Hey I live in Philly would you recommend bypassing the radiator or no
and as aces so that the clouster transmission marker works correctly
Nice vid carnal, but that engine sounds like it needs some work.. I hear knocking noise.
It’s a Chevy I’ll be fine 😅
What gauge cluster do you have? Looks awesome!
Thank you !Came of and 04 Escalade
Great video !! can I use that system for my 2003 yukon denali bro?
Thank you and yes you can their both similar
Do you need more trans oil since it’s more bigger ?
Yes I added a bit since I had lost some when I disconnected the lines , but just top it of once everything is done
Love that dash cluster
I may be wrong, but I think that's out of a Cadillac Escalade.
This MIGHT be a stupid question, but I'm a teacher and I ALWAYS say: the only stupid question is the one not asked. So here goes: why does a vehicle need a transmission cooler?
True lol and no worries a trans cooler helps extend the life of your transmission specially on a modified vehicle, it helps keep the transmission fluid temp stay cool since heat is the number one transmission killers lol
Do you hava a link to where i can get this exact tans cooler?
hey bro nice vid, did your engine go over 210 at times when you had the stock cooler? and if so did this fix it?
Yes my engine did go over 210 twice from a bad water pump and a blown radiator line and both times I saved my transmission from overheating
@@JoseFlores-fm3bm oh bet I have an 06 gmc with a 6.0 cammed headers and sometimes my engine temp goes over 210 but instantly goes back down and I can’t figure out what it is
Does you truck come with electric fans ? If not you can do the electric fan conversion and run a colder temp thermostat
@@JoseFlores-fm3bm yeah it does have electric fans. And a new water pump and radiator. You think it can be the coolant that’s old?
Put a 160 thermostat
i have a dropped silverado like yours, is it recommended to do this?
If your beating on it or use it for street yes highly recommend
I seen that someone drilled out the 3/8 holes to open them up more for better flow any word?
10:16 why would you need to remove the line? just shove the end of it into the rubber hose that came with the cooler and use the included fitting to connect the rubber hose to the cooler it self and you're good to go
I removed them because I wasn’t going to use them , i ran the lines straight to the 40k instead of having the transmission fluid circulate thought the main radiator plus If the motor ever overheated I know the transmission won’t overheat , had that happened to me twice , but not anymore
@@JoseFlores-fm3bm clever
@@JoseFlores-fm3bm did you need special fitting to plug the radiator? Or did it just stay without lines?
Thanks for the info G
Thanks man very helpful 👍
Hi, is the original coolant enough only after being removed from the water cooler
Did you plug up the holes in the radiator? I'm in Texas also, so no need to heat up the fluid first. LoL, this heat is insane.
Hi I have hummer h2 2003 I wanna install true cool so process same ?
Should be almost all the same just on taking of the grill pretty much
Do you have to plug those transmission connections on the radiator or is it fine like that?
That’s what I was wondering
No answer?
Any answers on this?

Tbh I probably did lol can’t remember but I’m glad it helped out , if you have questions feel free to ask
Thanks Jose.
What the difference bigger then smaller
So you're not running it to the radiator no more ?
I just installed mine and the guy said we shouldn't connect it to the radiator as well I also got the true cool 40
Nope straight from the transmission to the trucool itself setup , runs cooler and will prevent the trans from over heating if the engine happens to
Thanks for the info bro
I'm keeping the radiator cooler on mine. Maybe if the temps aren't as low as I want I'll bypass it. Not sure yet.
Sounds good , if you have more questions lmk
@@JoseFlores-fm3bm working on mine right now actually. Fluid overheated awhile back when I was on a steep back road. The factory cooler isn't nearly good enough for Arizona summers.
Yeah factory cooler sucks on these trucks but I’m glad your switching over to the 40k that should help out a lot
@@JoseFlores-fm3bm got mine installed. Not too difficult. Not liking the compression fitting too much may need to make a new cooler line without the fitting.
What's the long cooler to the right of the radiator for

Very clean and creative install. I’ll be installing mine exactly how you did it, thanks
Thank you and I’m glad to help , if you have any questions lmk
Good install video
Nice video mate.
Thanks
I live in OKC, in the winter it can get pretty cold sometimes. Do you think I could still do the bypass valve?
I would do the bypass valve since it does get pretty cold up their , down here in Texas it does get cold but not to the point that we need one , but yeah I would recommend the bypass valve so you can get the transmission fluid up to temp and prevent it from running to cold
Jose Flores okay thanks 👌🏽
I dont have the trans temp on my cluster, how can i tell if the trans running hot? Im not doing a new cluster cause i literally put a new factory one in last month
I’m having a hard time finding a black one. Is the silver noticeable through the grill in person?
Paint it
Nice rig! What cluster is that man?
Escales 05
Got a link for where your ordered cooler from?
I also have a 03 ext cab Silverado but mine don’t have that cluster. Where can I get a gauge cluster like your?
I got mine of an Escalade , 03 and up have them
@joseflores what did you use to plug up the radiator where your lines used to connect? What is the part called/where can I get it. Thank you
I dint plug up the radiator , I just drained the remaining oil and clean around it that’s all
Jose Flores Great. Just installed mine. Went great. Honestly hardest part was mounting the damn thing.. hahah. I ran through radiator as well. Running cool now. Average temp of 150-160 in 80f outside temps. In the morning I’m as low as 140f in hour long drives. Also installed a 160 thermostat to keep the engine running cooler overall. Engine temp now 190. I before was runnin 200 trans and 210 engine. My 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500 z71 RWD, on 18” wheels with 33x12. I highly recommend these coolers coupled with the thermostat!
What size is the hose and hose clamps ? Or does it come with the cooler too ??
Hose clamps will come with the cooler
I live in OKC and I have a 2012 Silverado 1500 Z71 4x4, Im kinda confused on the thermal bypass....If the transmission lines run to the radiator to get the trans up to operating temps, then I wouldnt need the bypass?
Bypass is only needed in really cold climates
Do you think this cooler would be good for a 4l80e ? think the temps will be around 150?
Yes , it would help it a lot since both 1500 and 2500 use the same stock transmission cooler, temp wise should also be lower between 150 and 160
Did you plug the return line on the radiator? The top line on the radiator.
No just cleaned the remaining oil
What temps you getting after the install? Any improvements
150 -160
Is there any advantage to using both trans coolers OEM and aftermarket?
If you mean using the main radiator and after market cooler no and yes , it will help the transmission fluid temp rise to operating temperature quicker but if your motor over heats both the motor and trans fluid will over heat , had that happen to me twice but not anymore with this set up
It’s the best way to go no matter what he says
What exhaust are u running 🏃??? Am planning on putting the cooler on my 08 silver it’s been running around 210 200 any suggestions?
It’s currently strait piped , installed a tru cool on a nnbs a while back on a buddy’s truck and he’s running low 100s on cold days and 150-160 on hot weather days
Water cools better than air, you need both man
how has it been running?
ممتاز
Yo can you put the link to where you got this kit ? Thanks
What size line did you use?
Funny how u try to correct this guy when you yourself are wrong in your correction. Lol Trans fluid comes out and goes into the radiator HEAT EXCHANGER then into the external transmission cooler then back into the trans. Ideally want your transmission fluid 20 degrees on average cooler than the engine coolant temp right? Now for example your coolant temp is running at steady 210° and you want your transmission fluid temp at 180.
( The cooler the better when it comes to trans fluid ) so the hot high pressure coming out of the trans say at 220° It then flows into the radiator heat exchanger and comes out the other end at 200° because the coolant in the radiator is at 210° Then it flows into the external transmission cooler in front of the radiator and it further reduces the trans fluid temp to 170° and goes back into the transmission at 170° and then comes out of the trans at 220° and the process repeats. The external cooler is much more efficient at cooling than the heat exchanger.
It would absolutely not make any sense to do it how you said. If you go to the cooler first straight out of the trans at 220° then into the external cooler and it gets down to 190° (assuming your transmission cooler is efficient) then you run it through the heat exchanger and the coolant is at 210° it would then heat up the transmission fluid To say 205 due to the the engine temp and back into the transmission just to heat up more. And continuing the cycle.
Long story short is why would you pull heat out of the trans down to a certain level just to have the coolant increase it l.
Who said anything about going through the 40k then the radiator that’s stupid , if you actually pay attention to the video I said we’re getting rid of that portion and just going through the 40k alone , nothing about going through the 40k then the radiator 🙄
What did you plug the old radiator holes with?
They sell threated caps at any hydraulic hose shop
Got a stall converter?
Does the transmission temperature gauge just automatically start to work even tho your truck didn’t come with that gauge ?? The ecm will make the gauge work ?
Yes as long as it’s for the same year , mine came of an 05 Escalade but any Escalade with the tranny temp or 2500 hd from 03-07 classic models will work , just a cluster change
@@JoseFlores-fm3bm , wait a minute, all I need to do to get a read out of tranny temp is switch my gauge cluster to a matching year cluster from an escalade?
This is really sweet if true.
Do you have to plug the original line that went to the radiator. And how did you add the line to the transmission cooler?
Did you plug it?
Where can i buy it?
Amazon has them for under 200
What about that old line to the radiator do you just leave it open or cap it ?
Did he cap the old line to the radiator?
Sorry to tell u, you installed this cooler udside down, that means you are only utilizing only about 20% off this coolers capacity. Look closely at the instructions and states how to install this cooler.due to the design of the coolers internals you must install with fittings on top...other than that i like your idea of eliminating the radiator.
And to drain the cooler at oil change ?
Mine said with the fittings pointing down so no debris is left in the cooler
Do you need to bleed the system since air is introduced? Or will it work it self out
It will work it’s self out
Did you have to add transmission fluid after the installation?
No
I got a question. I have the 03 cateye 1500 non hd. Is it posible to install the hd grill without having to have the hd hood?
There will be a gap
The only difference I think is the cowl induction that the hds have
For what is the bypass valve?
The bypass valve is used to get your trans fluid temp to operating temp when weather in the low 40s or so , if you live here in Texas your fine with out it lol
Jose Flores all right haha
Yo what about here in Houston this weather be bypolar
What did you plug the holes with on your radiator where your disconnected the lines
I dint plug them up , left them open just let the remaining fluid drain and clean afterwards
You don't need to plug them. I actually have plugs from a radiator I bought since my factory one leaked. But you don't need it plugged

what did you use to cap the radiator?
U don’t have to cap the radiator where the transmission lines were going into. that spot is just for the transmission fluid to heat up…..u can leave them open if u want……no radiator fluid will enter or exit out of that
