    From what I’ve learned about catching flag yellowtails around sharks, is to keep reeling and don’t let up. The minute you try to play them (pumping and reeling down) is when the sharks jump on them, as you can see.

    Bello.
    I like this YT fishing.
    Did you use only life bait ?
    What type are those heavy big fish you couldn't bring in the boat ?

    • @DerekVanHook
      @DerekVanHook  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Live bait is our favorite, but fresh dead is good too! I wish we knew what the big fish we lost were! Perhaps big grouper, amberjack, cubera snapper, or just sharks!

    What kind of rigs you guys runnin?

    • @DerekVanHook
      @DerekVanHook  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We aren’t too picky when it comes to the rod and reel combos. We like Diawa BGs as our spinners and Avet reels for our conventional rods.

    What part of the keys? We usually freeline in 70' -100', were you sandballing? Egg sinkers with 15' leader?

    • @DerekVanHook
      @DerekVanHook  ปีที่แล้ว

      Key Largo, free lining works well on the drop off. There fish were caught on a wreck in about 200 feet!

  • @jakejacobson2999
    @jakejacobson2999 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great content man. Just curious what length is your boat?

    • @DerekVanHook
      @DerekVanHook  ปีที่แล้ว

      We have a 28 Contender with twin 200s. Great boat for South Florida!

    • @jakejacobson2999

      @@DerekVanHook very nice! I’m looking to get something between 28-32. Seems like a good size and I can still go offshore with it

    • @DerekVanHook
      @DerekVanHook  ปีที่แล้ว

      The 28 is a really good size to trailer. If I could do it over again, I would opt for the 32 Contender but it’s just so much more expensive. if you aren’t planning on doing any crazy Bahamas trips, the 28th is plenty big enough. our boat has been to Bimini multiple times, but the longer trips over to the berry islands were a little rough.

    • @jakejacobson2999
      @jakejacobson2999 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DerekVanHook I think I’d like to have the option to comfortable do the Bahamas trips. But like you said it’s crazy how fast the price starts shooting up.

      We got our 2017 28 new from factory for less than half what used 32s are going for today

    What's your usual depth for flag yellowtails?

    • @DerekVanHook
      @DerekVanHook  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      usually between 80 to 130 ft but on this day we were catching them off a wreck a bit deeper.

    Whenever fishin a spot and sharks/goliath groupers show up, best to just move to another spot. Your basically training these fish to come to boats because they know its free buffet!

  • @nicklausb
    @nicklausb ปีที่แล้ว

    Too bad you guys couldn't have had a camera in the water to see what you were fighting.
    Great video

    • @DerekVanHook
      @DerekVanHook  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We will try that next time! The only issue is that the water is so deep we wouldn’t be able to see the fish until they’re almost at the boat.

    nice fish but the only tip i heard was to use live bait and a long leader............

    • @DerekVanHook
      @DerekVanHook  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also use light pound test and fluorocarbon 4:50 . These are the only tricks we used this day and still got on the fish!

    The drag on those reels is too hercky-jerky. I bet you lose a lot of fish, as a result.

    • @DerekVanHook
      @DerekVanHook  ปีที่แล้ว

      We usually have our reels serviced once a year, these were ready for a service. can’t say we have lost any fish due to the drag though

    • @DerekVanHook

      Deep wrecks, long light weight fluorocarbon leaders, and live bait were all in the video. If you need more help than that, I’d suggest taking out a charter!

    GREAT JOB AND GREAT VIDEO BUT THERE IS A MUCH EASIER WAY TO CATCH FLAG YELLOW TAIL SNAPPER.

    • @DerekVanHook
      @DerekVanHook  ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe in Key West! Upper keys yellowtail aren’t as easy to chum up, unless you’re using 2 cases of chum per trip!

  • @renerusso3332
    @renerusso3332 ปีที่แล้ว

    GUYS! YOU ARE FISHING MUTTONS MORE THAN YELLOW TAIL SNAPPER BUT GOOD MUTTON VIDEO.

    • @DerekVanHook
      @DerekVanHook  ปีที่แล้ว

      Muttons love this rig too, but it also weeds out the small yellowtail!
