Is the Kawasaki ZX14R still relevant?

  • Update: I sold my 2016 ZX14R SE in May of 2020. The gentleman who bought it was really happy about it. I now have a 2020 Indian FTR 1200 Rally. It is honestly much more fun than the ZX14R for 99% of the riding I do here in Arkansas. I miss the sheer speed, but it is a total Hooligan Ride. Just a thought on whether there is still a place in the motorcycling world for ZX14Rs and Hayabusas. Short answer...YES!
    Soon I will post a short video about the trials I had getting the factory oil filter off.

    The zx14 can never not be relevant. It is in a class of its own just like the busa

    A year ago I was riding my ‘07 VMax that I had for years (loved that bike) and stopped at a used bike dealership to window shop. There was a 2014 ZX14r Black w/ red accents on the floor on consignment. Having enjoyed watching @ZX14rBusaKiller vids, I test drove it even though I was not in the market for a different bike. If I had to use one word - SMOOTHE, two words - sooooooo smoothe. It was like, as I can only imagine, going from my ‘67 Camaro to a ‘19 ZL1. My trade-in value and the ZX’s price were too good to pass up, so I went home with it! This bike will outlast me as I am getting on in my years. I ride year round and do a week’s trip once a year with my son. It’s been perfect. Definitely relevant for me and I think I am a year younger since riding it, an absolute joy every single time.

      Yes, very smooth. I sometimes ride with crew of cruisers and there is always the inevitable hitting me up to ride my 'Ninja'...or the term I loathe...'Crotch Rocket'. Last time I let one of them ride (had some older sportbike experience) they guy came back trying soooooo hard to hide his grin (he's now a hardcore Greybeard Harley Dude) and he got off and just kept saying "Hooooooolyyyyy Shiiiiit"

      It really does do a lot of things well for such a 'big' motorcycle. If you never go beyond 3k on the tach, you'd be lulled into thinking you were riding a very comfortable scooter.

    Bingo Scottie Ray, thanks for bringing up this question and answering in the affirmative. If there is only one do it all bike (except off road) the ZX14R is the holy Kaw bike you will ever need. H2, Hayabusa, S1000RR, Multistrada, Tuono 1100, whatever. 14R rules and seasoned riders only know what I am talking about. Once you taste it there is no going back. Cheers

    • @scottieray
      @scottieray  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It shouldn't surprise you though. Kawasaki has been building the ZX14 series for over a decade now and I have never heard of anyone ever having major problems out of them. The motor is overbuilt. Overall, this is a fairly 'simple' machine despite the killer power and torque. What will be interesting is if the new H2 SX series can maintain that same level of reliability as the ZX14R has done.

    • @j_thom
      @j_thom 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mine is a 2007, so early in the life of this model.. Stone reliable, does roast your innter right leg a little much I gotta admit. . . Only thing wrong with the bike back then were the stock Bridgestones. . .

    I am a Hayabusa rider, and like the ZX-14 it's incredibly stable at all speeds. Many people don't 'get' these machines, until of course they have a go on one at which point they're usually sold on them.

    • @scottieray
      @scottieray  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stable is the word. The ZX14R is really just a good all-around motorcycle. Sorta like the UJM's from the 80's. Who knows what the future holds though. I think Kawasaki would be silly to completely get rid of the ZX14R. And who knows what Suzuki has planned. The Hayabusa is still their 'Halo' motorcycle even though the current one has been around since 2008. I'd like to see both manufacturers just say "eff it" and modernized both these beasts.

    In 2017 I purchased three 2016 zx14R SE's! First one came off the bike hauler on the way back back from Pikes Peak...replaced that one, then the second one was taken out when I picked up six feet of water inside my house last year during Hurricane Harvey. Now on number three of the 2016 SE model. This one has been flashed several times using Woolich software, heads ported and built, TransLogic quickshifter, Hindle full system with the carbon can and the longer midpipe which works for my midrange, and a few other goodies. The wrecked bike is in the process of having some work done by several shops engine wise and once Grudge season is over I'll get back to work on it. My daily rider is very comfortable and quite capable against other bikes...when they want to play...with 238hp at the back wheel with no internal work done and only tuning and external engine mods.

    I was a little worried for the ZX-14R after the announcement of the H2 SX but, with it being significantly more costly, the 14R still has a place.
    It's a bike with loads of room for improvement (cosmetics, electronics, displays, luggage options *for those in the US). Those minor updates will make it all the more worthwhile of a motorcycle.
    I love my 2016 ZX-14R. :)

      Thank you. Winter in Northwest Arkansas has been quite cold so riding has been limited. Sketchy riding on the curves due to this odd mixture of chloride and dirt(?) since we've had several rounds of decorative snow here (but no deep accumulation). That mixture is slick as snot with even a little moisture.

Planning to modify a zr1400 by removing all ugly fairings&tail and making a good looking street-F :) . A lot of work for that but mechanically it’s worth it. Respect from Europe.

    I have had my Concours 14 for over 10 years now and still think it is a highly underated "sport bike." That thing still puts a huge grin on my face every time I push into a curve or crack the throttle. If I sold my B-King, I don't think I would miss the power or speed of the Hyabusa engine, because quite frankly on riding on the street we rarely have the chance to push those envelopes. So, I wonder is the GRT1400/Concours 14 still relevant? It is for me! No back pack to carry stuff and it hauls fast very well.

      Mansolo 1 She was in my line of sight the whole time. Would I leave the key in inside the Little Rock city limits...no, but on Mt. Magazine it would be very very rare to have your ride stolen. Plus, by the time they DID steal it I would have County Sheriffs blocking both sides of Highway 309 which is the ONLY way up or down the mountain. Additionally, most of my friends and myself included have our CC License. It's not going to be a good day if you try to forcibly take a ride.

    • @mansolo1756

      I was not implying that you were being careless, I unintentionally did leave my key in my ZX14R when I stopped at 711 for water. My 2013 ZX-14r in Cadillac quiet stock form is still the fastest thing I see on the roads around here. There's no other bike I'd rather be on for real arms-out-the-sockets acceleration (seriously better have a grip when ripping on it) , leaning in the twisties, or just cruising to work. At 6'2" I don't feel cramped or uncomfortable and it will lean as fast and low into a corner as I'd want to go on any sport bike. A true BAMF that I'll keep all stock (minus braided brake lines) and I don't plan on ever getting rid of it. P.S. my parents live in Conway and I've been to the location in your video a few times. Thanks for the great production!

      @@brandon6712 I'm about your size. I do have a long inseam and do wish the peg to seat height were just a bit more. Overall she is a comfy ride for sure...just not the more stretched out position that the new H2-SX gives you. Your remark on the R6 is interesting. I owned a Daytona 675SE for a while. What a great motorcycle. But honestly, I do about as much on my ZX14R here on the curves of the Arkansas Ozarks as I ever did on the Daytona. The ZX14R is more like a BMW 5 series or a AMG Mercedes sedan...it's a beast but handles speed eerily well. Like, it shouldn't be able to do all the things it can do. The Bike Show has a great video comparing the ZX14R, H2, and the ZX10R: th-cam.com/video/S4ep4uIxhtY/w-d-xo.html

      There are some good deals out there on ZX14R's. Insurance is not so bad on these either...but I'm youthfully old and have no speeding tickets. Used ones can be a good value too if they haven't been trashed or modified with 300mm beach ball tires. Some ZX14R's are still holding good value too. My 2016 SE (M50 calipers, Flat black paint/anodizing) is still listing on Cycle Trader for $9-11k. Not sure if people are really paying those prices though. I do know mine gets compliments from everyone, even Harley guys.

      Reliable is why I wanted one. Before this I had a lightly used (only 4000 miles) BMW K1200S. Oh, it was such a spiffy ride. Thanks for the comments thus far. Seems most everyone is a ZX14(R) fan. This past week teaser videos were released by Kawasaki that seem to indicate a Supercharged Touring motorcycle. So, as much as we love the Big ZX14R, how would you feel if Kawasaki stopped making the ZX14R and released as-powerful but smaller capacity supercharged motorcycles. The day is coming I am afraid when large capacity rides like our are not going to pass emissions and mpg requirements. Maybe supercharging is the way forward. The H2 is a beast, even if it's purpose is more muddled than the ZX14R in that it is not quite a sportbike, but not quite the ground-pounder that the ZX14R is.

    Beautiful bike!!! "THE Bike of Bikes" but since you ask, Hell yes the hyper-bikes are relevant in my opinion and here's why I say?!
    first of all I am a former busa owner (25,000 miles) and yes I do currently own a 2014 ZX-14R orange/black with Carrozzeria wheel's and Brock's full system Titanium exhaust with some other goodies. It won't be for sale either, I love the dimensions of the hyper bikes or else I would have just a liter bike which feels like a bicycle to me and may actually jump out a little in front at first but that gain will be short lived once the 14 gets moving. The ZX-14 is also in the "sport touring" category as well as drag racing and just an excellent street machine all around. So much power, so comfortable, so everything. I often wonder why I don't see more on the road than I do, but good choice you've made and if you dare sale the bike I can promise you will regret it. ***** Meaning you'll miss it.
    Whenever I am riding my adventure bike, I keep thinking about by ZX-14, the only bike you really need; ever....
    you got a good deal on it and I can't wait to ride to Magazine Mountain, be safe!

      Barry Weaver I hope they keep making some version of the Hayabusa or the ZX14R...but I personally think their days are numbered. You have to think that Harley Davidson controls almost 55% of the 'Over 600cc' market in the USA. That means ALL the other motorcycle manufacturers are fighting for the remaining 45% of the market for 'Over 600cc' motorcycles.

    As of December 9th, 2019 it appears there will be no ZX14R beyond the 2020 model year in the European market. Other worldwide markets will be order-only. Unclear as to the US market; though I can't imagine it will last beyond that here either. The ZX14R is, well, a dinosaur in today's market. I'm undecided on keeping mine and I think many buyers are in my position in that we love the speed and relative lack of farkles on the Ole Ground Pounder...but kinda wish there was an affordable alternative that offered up the comfort and insanely easy ridiculous acceleration of the ZX14R. The H2 series is very cool and wickedly quick...but the down side is they cost nearly twice of a current gen ZX14R.

    Nice bike and beautiful country, man. Most of my family is buried just outside Mena, though I grew up in Florida. We would vacation in Arkansas when I was a kid and I was just at Rich Mountain a few years ago. To answer your question, yes the 14 is very relevant as it is one of the few bikes that is comfortable and fast with a nice passenger seat which the literbikes sadly lack. It is a hell of a bargain for the performance you get. Sounds like you paid less than me too. Got the 2016 Ninja 1000 myself and like it but it could definitely use more power and I have been drooling over the zx14 ever since. Oh, and yeah my oil filter was a bitch to get off as well and they torqued another one on there again after a recent service lol. I was so pissed I wanted to call and complain. A good pair of oil filter pliers will serve you well.

      @scottieray  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely a 4-into-2. The tail on the ZX14R is so wide that I think they look unfinished with just one exhaust. I do like the Brock's Titanium 4-into-2 system. It is much lighter than stock. Another area that would save much weight is carbon wheels. The stock wheels on the ZX14R are very heavy.

    • @scottieray

      The B-King was before it's time. Suzuki doesn't have a motorcycle in their current lineup that comes close to how bonkers the B-King was way back in 2008. The new GSX-R 1000 motor is a beast with variable valve timing. It would be a good naked bike and better than the GSX1000.

    • @scottieray
      @scottieray  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably need to go for the Ninja 1000 or even the Versys 1000 (underrated). The riding position on the ZX14R still has pegs that are pretty high up since it has a relatively low seat height with the need for some ground clearance. If ground clearance is not your concern there are lower pegs available (Knight Industries?).

      No, I've decided to leave the stock exhaust on. I argued with (myself) back and forth but eventually decided to leave it as is. I like the 'quiet' exhaust on long trips. Induction noise is all you can hear anyways once you get over the speed of light.

    Beautiful bike! How do you like this compared to the bking in terms of comfort over distance and at speed?

    • @scottieray
      @scottieray  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I live in Central Arkansas and most of my riding is on curvy roads. As long as the road is curvy and I am moving around on her I don't get uncomfortable at all on the ZX14R. Straight line running is not my favorite thing, but as long as I am cruising around 75-80mph the wind pressure is enough to take some of the load off of my upper torso. The B-KING was as heavy as my ZX14R but with a much more upright riding position. The B-KING had the best air management of any 'naked' motorcycle I have ever ridden. That tiny fairing, REALLY wide tank, and those side pods blocked a large portion of the wind blast below middle-chest area. The bars on the B-KING gave you leverage to boss it around on a curvy road.

    • @fredsmith3963
      @fredsmith3963 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      scottieray Interesting! I appreciate the insight! I looove the look of the ZX14R, but the bking has caught my eye as well. It's great to hear from a guy who has had both!

    • @scottieray
      @scottieray  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fred Smith Be prepared to pay at least $10K now for a B-KING in good condition. Watch out for warped brake rotors and knackered headstock bearings. My B-KING was meticulously maintained, but I went though two sets of front rotors and replaced the headstock bearings once. Near 600lbs of weight and 160-ish H.P. (to the rear wheels...Mine made 162 H.P. on dyno) and unintentional wheelies puts the hurt on certain components.

I love my 14 and hate when people who have never ridden one complain or dismiss it because of its weight. One Cruza vlogger was even claiming that its horsepower was offset by its weight and his bike was likely as speedy. It sets the bar for every motorcycle and is always the topic when the" my bike is faster than a ZX14R" bragging begins. Paid a bit over 12 grand, can’t beat the performance for the cost = high value. Added a screen, seat, lowered pegs, LSL bar conversion, Yoshimura exhaust, and ecu flash. As for the stock exhaust, really? Butt ugly and heavy. Ecu flash is to make it run not so lean.

    Try M-4 slip-ons and a Guhl Motors e.c.u. flash. You'll save 30 lbs. and pick up a load of power from the flash.

    • @scottieray
      @scottieray  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the factory center stand. Aftermarket exhaust are a possibility, but I would have to find one that clears or one that I could weld a bung-stop or modify the center stand itself so it will not hit the exhaust. I will NOT give up my center stand. It has proven to be invaluable already. I have considered the Guhl flash though. Even if I keep the stock exhaust, the flash does help. I think his flash also alters the power delivery in 3rd gear. On the stock ZX14R if you hammer the throttle in 3rd you only get 60% of engine output. If you 'roll on' the throttle in 3rd I believe you get the full engine output. Think that was done from the factor so you wouldn't loop.
