I feel like "guilty man tormented by neglecting/murdering female family member" is such a horror game cliche now. It's to the point where as soon as you see a beer bottle in a first-person horror game you already know exactly what's going on.

Horror is a structure that has had its prose tapped full since the dawn of myth with Zeus being ate by his had and then eating his wife down the line in turn. The only thing you can do is change how you present the same beats or in the case of games also how the gameplay works with those beats. This is why horror games generally home in on a specific gimmick or theme, IE a fridge. A lot of horror and stories use Baba Yaga or a crone like figure, so then your creative process would be not "changing out the crone" but how do I "present the crone", is she going to be beautiful, scary, distorted, hidden, is she an enemy, any ally, does she pursue the character overtly? Spirited Away merges the crone figure with Japanese spirituality and myths and increases the overall spectacle and cast, but beat wise it is the same structure as all crone stories with (Tricked by Crone, someone is trapped by Crone, use wits honor and determination to outsmart Crone).
Since you are long past the peak golden era of gaming (SNES/Megadrive - PS2/GCetc) all your structures and novelty have been tapped out. Games like Resident Evil, Sweet Home, Silent Hill, Kings Field, Thief and so on have set the structure of being first to the line so you innovate primarily on presentation than anything else. Undertale is an excellent example of this as an IP juggernaut that has huge popularity that is at its beats a mishmash of established genres, plot points and pace but the way it has sold those tropes and directs them makes it stand out.
The only beat I'd tell any dev to hard avoid is the depressed angst surreal horror game, it's done so commonly and every iteration of how you can present it is tapped out along with its lack of marketability and huge room to offend at least someone with a writing misstep. Omori is the only game I've seen with some recent success on it, but notably without tapping into spoilers it is a smaller subsection of the game and is contrasted against heavily.

They took the unique premise of evil fridge that eats you if you dont look at it and turned this into one of the most common horror tropes of it was all in your head/a metaphor. It's an ok game in its own right but so far removed in gameplay and concept from the original that it fails to live up to expectations. TBH I was hoping for something like the evil entity possesses various objects around the house that you need to look at while navigating the place and maybe it even possesses the entire house at one point.

The daughter wants to be with her dad yet he isn't around. The wife I assumed died to some illness and it made the dad slip into alcohol to stop the pain, could explain why you get the message you feel good and can move a bit faster. I think the fridge is like a metaphor for current life maybe and that it's trying to get them in order to see what's going on in front of them but no matter how hard they try to not pay attention to it, the fridge is right there watching.

The fridge is his alcoholism. He knows its a monster, and it'll ruin him, yet he just can't stop. He can't look away from the fridge because it's the real problem needs addressing, but he's too scared to do so. The time in hell is a kind of lapse he got after a massive drinking binge, possibly days without being sober. Even when he went and finally tried to pick himself back up, the addiction came back at the last second.

Honestly my guess is that the "fridge demon" is the materialised fear and guilt of the father's alcoholism. Alcohol is stored in fridges. And the father in the game seems to have a drinking problem. The fridge didn't eat the daughter, but his alcoholism did, symbolically. Maybe after seeing his addiction isn't getting better and his behaviour towards his wife is kind of ignorant, the wife left and the daughter stayed with the dad because the mother is disabled. Thus, the father fell harder into addiction, not properly caring for his daughter's needs. This brings me to two theories as to what happens next.
    1. The daughter, seeing how much dad likes his alcohol, ends up trying to drink it as well, possibly becoming very entertained by the effects of alcohol despite the bitter taste, like dizziness, feeling all wobbly, like your body is light but also heavy, and thus she ends up drinking more and more in one go and dies of alcohol poisoning, thus being a more direct metaphor of "the fridge ate her" and the father thus carrying this guilt forever as his alcoholism basically killed his daughter.
    2. A neighbour, teacher or classmate notices the changes in the daughter, like dirtier clothes and body from the father's laziness, thinner body from him not feeding her properly, etc. Thus they call CPS, who visit the father at home, find him drunk again with his daughter hungry in her bedroom, the house is a mess, and immediate take the child and put her in foster care as the father loses custody of her. Again, his alcoholism cost him his daughter, who although alive, is now gone and in the foster system as he is left alone with his guilt, depression and alcohol, now despising looking at the fridge, unable to not think of having lost his daughter because of its' contents that he indulges himself in.
To those who managed to find this comment, sorry for the lengthy comment. I was just really confused but intrigued by the game and entered a theorising rabbit hole lmao.
TLDR: Game represents father's guilt and depression after losing his family, and the fridge is his alcoholism materialised haunting him after his mistakes and failures in life caused by it.

I really hope there is actually some supernatural elements in this game and not just 'you bad person, see monster that's meant to represent you, because this is all in your head' Because those games are becoming painfully common to the point of tedium. In contrast, the idea of a fridge that eats people, to me, is honestly scarier.
Heck, the game is honestly, not that scary. You play a really strong open with the fridge at the start, then the rest of the game turned into a walking simulator with an occasional puzzle to spell out how 'oh, you killed your family and stuffed them into a fridge'

The original version of this was amusing, reminding me of a certain sequence in Control. I certainly didn't expect to see it expanded, but I'm interested to see how the final game shapes up. Its tone has really changed, but what's here is good so that's not necessarily a bad thing.

L.Whannell is probably a reference to the creator of Saw. Alternatively, K. Toyama is a reference to Toyama of Silent Hill and Siren fame. Also, the wife in white in a wheelchair is probably another SH reference, to Alessa.

If this game is another "bad father punished in Hell for hurting female family members (who have little-to-no characterization at all since they're dead before the story even starts)" trope I am going to lose my mind. • @carlosdasilva2409
    @carlosdasilva2409 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

If it just ended there I would have thought the game was a metaphor for a man who spiraled into depression and alcoholism after his wife died. That he mentally tortured himself about not being able to do anything for his wife's sickness and subsequent death (hence the alcoholism later down the line). This turned him into a neglectful parent and something happened to his daughter in the process.
But seeing this is an extended project makes me think that nope. It goes further. Maybe it is just a horror game and that's it

    _A cool idea_
Pun intended. I liked the idea of a fridge perhaps introducing the player to new stories. The game evolving into an anthology of short horror experiences is solid. It will really rely on the stories to be as innovatively bizarre as the art and puzzles. I'm hoping for good Outer Limits or old Twilight Zone kind of ideas brought to life. And definitely less filter will make things a bit easier to see and enjoy.
