      At least 5-6 years earlier release. Had it been released in 2018 (with a good cast) it would have fared better. I am a hard time Borderlands fun - but then again, that's the only game I played in the last 10 years. It seems the Borderlands hype faded after the pandemics (not in small part due to what the jerk CEO did to his employees then - reason for which I did not even buy Borderlands 3 and I just replay the first 3 ones)

      IKR?
      First trailer I saw about this way back when it got announced screamed one word at me: 'confused'.
      -Mix and match of characters from across multiple games instead of just sticking with one set.
      -Odd casting choices for multiple characters that reads like a bunch of known-names who didn't have any work at the time and so were just cashing the cheque, combined with other relative nobodies. From Blanchett and JLC being way too old for the roles (and yea, in Blanchett's case being WAY outside her wheelhouse in experience), to Kevin Hart supposed to be playing a straight-man Merc (Though TBF they do nothing with his character or Krieg's)
      -Way too PG for Borderlands even just on the degree of violence
      -Obvious Guardians of the Galaxy/Suicide Squad wannabe while doing neither aspect of either concept correct.
      It made me scratch my head as to what the plan was, and how Pitchford is a lunatic for signing off on it, but then he's more than proven he's a lunatic even just in terms of how he's overseen the games. The fact he's so pissed over this version failing just reaffirms he's a moron to me.

      the casting was so bad that i want to argue that lillith was cast even worse than the two you mention. Roland and Lillith are equally terrible casting choices to me. Roland was serious so they pick the most unserious comedian? Lillith was young and sexy, so they pick someone old and wrinkly? Really the only one even remotely ok was tina

      For Tannis they chose someone who acts like her but doesnt look like her.
      For Lillith they chose someone who doesnt act like her and doesn't look like her.
      That's why I see Lillith as the worst, but yea. I can agree they're all terrible at the end of the day. I feel like the casting director just took the first big name that walked in the door for each of these characters and didn't go any further than that.

    • @magisterrleth3129
      @magisterrleth3129 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      There wasn't one good decision made. Even Jack Black. He's the only one who seemed to be trying, but hearing his voice come out of Claptrap is just distracting. The movie would've looked and felt better if the changed nothing about it except replacing every single big name with literally anybody else.
      But that still wouldn't have fixed it because even the cinematography is bad. For example, they make a short joke about Kevin Hart near the beginning. Tiny Tina says, "did my dad send his shortest soldier to find me?" And Kevin say "No." However, because of the framing of the shot, not once are you able to see that Kevin Hart is short. It would've landed a lot better if they intentionally filmed it so Kev looks big and heroic, and then when they make that joke, cut to a wider shot that shows them both in perspective, and then you see Kevin Hart's Roland is the same size as a girl called Tiny Tina.
      But they didn't do that, because that would've required someone who was involved in the writing and filming of the movie to care about it. It feels like they had whatever the original script was, and then they fed it to an AI who's only function was to deflate any emotion and riddle the screenplay with incomplete jokes that it is incapable of understanding.

      Or maybe, just maybe, Borderlands isn’t as popular as the fans would have you believe.
      The casting was horrible, but even with a proper casting the wider audience doesn’t hold BL in high regard. The only game that is universally liked is the TellTale game over all the others.

      Honestly that's the most baffling decision of the entire thing. The other characters were cast "for the movie" - the director didn't particularly care what their age was in the games. And that's fine, as long as the casting makes sense for the movie (which they repeatedly point out that _none_ of the characters were well-cast). But then, the _one character_ who by rights should be in her mid to late 20s but is _canonically_ in her 40s... is _even older_ in the movie? Like, if you're casting based purely on how the character is written in the movie, then why WOULDN'T you cast Moxxi as someone younger???

    The problem Hollywood has is no new young talent. They are like a baseball team with no recruitment department whose players keep getting older and slower. I recently saw a movie where 70 year old Liam Neeson played hardboiled detective Phillip Marlowe (who was in his thirties in the books.) And another where Ian McKellen played an aging Sherlock Holmes. Watching Deniro, Pacino and Pesci playing geriatric gangsters in The Irishmen was excruciating. It's sad and creepy.

Everyone knows that in last decade 'movie stars' kind of died and name itself won't be enough to attract people to cinema. It's all about characters and comic book universes. So they keep casting old actors with some sort of name recognition instead complete unknowns.

      It really depends on whether the movie was designed to be PG-13 from the start, or if the studio mandated that an R-rated film be cut down to PG-13 to "make more money".
      The Dark Knight Trilogy for example, was intentionally made to be accessible to younger viewers while still retaining its mature elements because Christopher Nolan always wanted to see movies like that when he was a kid; (and the movies are beloved to this day). Whereas something like Venom, which was originally intended to be R-rated and was cut down to PG-13, suffers greatly as a result. That drop in quality is quite evident in There Will Be Carnage specifically

    I didn't play borderlands 2 or 3, but from what I remember of borderlands 1, vaults didn't require any special "descendant of an ancient race" to open, they just required all the keys that were hidden away. The military megacorp that was trying to open the vault had already successfully opened a vault on a different world - which had a bunch of super advanced alien technology that gave them a massive advantage against everybody else in the universe.
    So they wanted to also open the vault on Pandora because they believed it would have more alien tech, but the Pandora vault was just meant to be a prison for a potentially universe-ending lovecraftian entity instead of an arms cache. Lilith had nothing to do with the plot specifically beyond just being a playable character who was a vault hunter alongside Roland Mordecai and Brick.
    So unless I'm missing something, the movie plot has little to do with the established game lore beyond sharing names and locations. And I could be wrong, but I don't even think Lilith and Patricia Tannis had any prior relation in the games.

    • @Robo-xk4jm
      @Robo-xk4jm 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      the movie took parts of the plot of 1 took characters from 2 and made their own thing with it. each vault just needs a vault key with eridium & a siren to charge. and after the 1st game lilith is a npc thats part of the story and way better then there then this, tina is just a traumatized 13 yr old girl with a psychotic & explosive coping mechanism not the chosen one lmao. and krieg is just a DLC character from 2 with funny voice lines and an interesting playstyle that was added after the main game was completed. i definitely recommend playing 2 handsome jack is what made these games so popular ig we should be glad they didnt try anything with him. 3 has good gameplay but thats a game where the story should be ignored at all points of the playthrough, been a while since ive ever seen one thats only seen 1

    While there are a million mistakes made with it, the movie can’t escape one simple truth:
    Borderlands is not a popular franchise.
    For the non-gamers and the younger gamers in the audience, the last time Borderlands was a hit was 2012 when Borderlands 2 came out. And even then it was a divisive game due to the “comedy” in it. And while it had a bit of a resurgence with BL 3 and has its hardcore fans, it says a lot to me that the one game in the franchise with the most love for it is “Tales of the Borderlands”. A game that wasn’t even made by the main developer (Gearbox).
    There was a time for this movie and it was a very narrow window that they missed completely.

    Borderlands: The Reboot. Movie starts with a Marcus narration and an intro like A New Hope with a ship piloted by Roland being chased by an Atlas ship. Roland stole an ancient Eridian artifact from Atlas. His ship gets shot down and crashes on Pandora. Lilith, who's already a Siren, sees this from Sanctuary, as does a group of Psychos. Atlas soldiers arrive at the crash site and have a shootout with Roland, who gets hit. Psychos arrive and slaughter the soldiers, taking all the gear and artifact. They're too dumb to know what gear is good and toss everything to a Loot Midget, who returns to camp. As the Psychos are about to kill Roland, Lilith arrives and saves him; "Sup." Roland passes out and is taken to Sanctuary. He gets patched up and meets Tannis, Claptrap, Moxxi, and Krieg, who was found wondering the wastelands alone; bad Psychos always traveled in groups. Brick and Mordecai can be added here. Roland explains the situation and the group, minus Tannis and Moxxi, gear up with weapons and shields and head for the Psychos camp. They defeat the Psychos, loot good gear, and recover the artifact. Returning to Sanctuary, they encounter Tiny Tina, who forms a bond with Roland. At Sanctuary, Tannis studies the artifact and discovers that it's a key to open a Vault on Pandora, which is currently guarded by Hyperion forces. Atlas attacks Sanctuary and captures Tiny Tina. Without enough soldiers to fight Hyperion, Atlas forces the heroes to work with him. They successfully defeat Hyperion and open the Vault. Inside the Vault, a monster appears and kills Atlas and his remaining soldiers, with Roland saving Tiny Tina. The heroes defeat the monster, Eridium starts appearing on the planet, and they return to Sanctuary for a happy ending. In the mid-credit scene, more Vaults have appeared on Pandora and the heroes look to the skies as more Vault Hunters enter the atmosphere. Post-credit scene has Helios entering Pandora space like the Death Star.
    Cast: Samara Weaving as Lilith, Aldis Hodge as Roland, Jessica Henwick as Tannis, Alisha Weir as Tiny Tina, Nathan Jones as Krieg, Megan Fox as Mad Moxxi, Jacob Scipio as Mordecai, and Florian Munteanu as Brick.

      I agree, but I don't know how much audiences would cotton to a story entirely about introspection and spiritual awakening like Ultima 4 these days. Plus, how would you adapt U4 into a conventional narrative? The whole game is about exploring Britannia, occasionally dungeon delving and fighting groups of random monsters, but mostly investigating towns to find the runes/shrines/mantras/everything else needed to become the Avatar. It was only meant to be a video game

    This is a huge black eye for video game movie adaptations. In recent memory are Borderlands and Halo series.
    It HURTS when directors take great source material and ruin it with their own flair. Whats so hard about sticking to material that made it great in the first place?
    Its despicable when companies ruin franchise like this and then say "video games never make good movies" when they didnt even give it a fair chance to be one.

  • @futseb
    @futseb 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    There are money people who see video game adaptation as the next good trick to be in. But they don't know them. They still think it's for kid. Or is it that an adaptation must necessarily aim a wider audience of the game because you know, 10 million is a good figure as game sales goes, but not so much as movie tickets count goes, especially when everything on theaters cost over $100 Millions.
    So big money people wanted to have an adaptation of Borderlands, but PG 13. They wanted to cast renowned actresses in it, to get respectability, and to have the two parents and the three kids all buying a ticket to that movie. Well... it didn't work. At all...
    Video games, up until the early 2010's, have accomplished this miracle to be wide spread niche content. Bringing edginess to a new level and new audiences.
    Problem is that the new scale of VG industry and Movie industry can't allow them to be niche or edgy anymore.
    Ye gamers out there reading this, how would you adapt Bioshock, but PG 13, and a way to turn it into a family show for all the family to watch ? You see the problem !
