unfortunately the cycle2work scheme is horribly restrictive, you have to be employed by an employer on the scheme and if you are on or near minimum wage forget it. If you are self employed, forget it. Also if you have 2 jobs forget that too as you can only claim it through one of the employers and again, the payments cant put you under minimum wage for that one job. You also cant top up the payments with savings to get the value of the bike down to what cycle 2 work will give you. for some bizarre reason if you are rich you get MORE discount than if you are poor. it needs scrapping and reimagining. Personally I would like to see grants on commuter style bikes, when we got our leaf we got a 3k grant off the purchase price. My e-bike cost me 2k the only choice I had as self employed was to get it financed.
Yesterday I was servicing in London. £50 train into Liverpool st then e-bike to Shoreditch high st, to, Tottenham Court rd, to , St Paul’s, to, Stockwell then back to Liverpool st. On the bike for probably just over an hour in total 👍 you can’t beat an e-bike 😁
My workplace has the cycle to work scheme but the way it is set out on our website we can only buy a bike off of one specific site that they have given us and there aren’t any electric or folding electric bikes on there for less than £1000
It cost me nothing or close to nothing to travel daily. Most of the time I ride an eBike that I charge at work, my second most used form of transport is a work car that I use for work purposes and the company pays for the fuel, thirdly I use an eScooter that I also keep and charge at work (eScooter riding is legal where I live) and lastly I use public transport which I do have to pay for but I use that rarely.
What if I now work from home, permanently? My contract (pre-pandemic), stated I travelled to the office one day per week and worked from home the rest, now it's been updated to be at home permanently. Do I qualify?
My company are on the cycle scheme (up to £3,000) & last year i applied 3 times & got knocked back each time. I earn more than enough & pay a lot of tax. Nobody from my hr spokemto me about it & my refusals were just emailed to me
Love this, and thank you for what you do. I did want to use it when i first started working, but i had to get past the probational period, so i bought one on my own and spread the cost over 12mths. Next year I will be using it to get myself a beast for sure.
Most companies in the UK limit the CycleToWork scheme to £1000 with no way of topping that up. This makes any worthwhile ebike out of the range of the scheme. I have had 3 different employers and all of them used the £1k limit.
Please add Vivup cycle to work scheme as I would love to buy an ADO Air from you but this scheme doesn’t seem to be supported. What is the reason for that?
Eilis you sounded like my wife there, very knowledgeable, and shes a tax specialist who knows about these rhings.😄 The bit about not having to ride all the way to work was news to me. I asked her why she didnt do it, she said: " I'm dyspraxic and over sixty and i dont bounce like i did as a kid so probably best not!" 😅
I WFH so have zero commute mileage or cost. Does that mean I can’t access the scheme? Can I just “pretend” I commute ? I do meet colleagues in London once or twice a year… but I wouldn’t take a bike to the train station as they get pinched.
Your videos inspired me Elish. I've been struggling to work with an old mountain bike, I finally was able to apply through my work for a new bike but the Cycle Solutions limit with my company is £1k with no top ups allowed. So I bought a second hand electric bike, nowt special (but not a cheap Chinese amazon bike) and wow! what a difference it makes to my journey. Even a low powered 250 watt makes hills a breeze. p.s. Where is Holly, more Holly please ;)
What qualifies as minimum wage ???? I mean if you just say the hourly wage and work 36 hours a week. Then take some person who works 40 hours a week , and the difference over a month , then a year. The amount is substantially different. But they both still earn the same hourly minimum rate.
Cycle to work is still not good if you need a non standard bike say a recumbent or recumbent trike are either nearly impossible to get or terribly expensive. Also like you said for those on minimum wage you can not get on the scheme. We really need to work on this issue where it more expensive to live when you do not have a lot of money.
No cycle to work scheme in Sweden, but I can through the company get a subsidized health activity like a 45 minute spinning class, but I'm too tired for that after my 2x 45 minute bike commute 🤷♂
Could you check the after payment after 12 months part, Ive done the C2W for three years now and at the end of each year after paying for 12 months through salary sacrifice, I had to pay a fee for both the "own it now price (the price in your video example)" or "extend for three years (10% of bike price)". BTW thanks Eilis for all your great and fun content.
Do you ever have a sale on your bikes especially those that are used as , I can’t think of the word , you know what I mean when people try them out to see if they like them, still can’t think of the word ?
@@damnson666 my comment wasn't against more powerful bikes, I had my eye on an Engwe, just that given the CTW scheme is an initiative of HMRC Tax along with your employer who technically owns it, a bike over 250 watts is illegal and if you are found out you will be in trouble.
My commute - twice a month across the Danube, 6km round trip with a Bogist C1 Pro scooter for €550. Assuming 15W/km that would be about 2.4 kWh per year! Commuting is very secondary - use it for shopping and exploring and done over 4000km on it in nearly 2 years.

Grants just increase the cost of goods. However, in principle I agree the CWS scheme should be reimagined.
You dont get the RRP discounts with the scheme though so more like 25% saving overall.
