Great reaction as always. The last line "Mother did it need to be so high" refers to the "wall" she helped him build to shield him from the world.

That solo in the middle is absolutely incredible. Short, but oh so full of emotion. Only David Gilmour can create a short, masterful solo like that.

The mother is the original construction manager of the wall. That’s why the last line is, “mother did it need to be so high?” There security then there’s prison. Fine line.

Richard Wright is often overlooked in this band, with Gilmour and Waters, but he `was` the atmosphere for this band. His keyboards set the tone of most PF songs.

08:29 you distilled the narrative of this song perfectly in 30 seconds. someone's already set you straight on the last line,so i'll just say...do the rest of the album! you wont regret tossing everything else aside and listening to the rest of this masterpiece. you also need a sense of continuity that you'll miss out on if you space the reactions out over a number of days. or perhaps just record all your reactions in one sitting then release them gradually.

Yes! You’re right. 👍 it’s partially based on Roger Waters’ own life, losing his father to WW2 and experiencing an over protective mother, though he said in an interview it was not about his relationship with his own mother ✌️

pretty much right on with your thoughts about mom being overbearing and overprotective and not letting him just be his own person. For a little idea as to why, check out "When the Tigers broke Free" form this same album. Also, if you want to totally wreck your mind, watch the movie "The Wall. It is depressing as all hell with a dynamite soundtrack. You might be just the man for it. As always, great reaction. Floyd on.

The difference of PF is that as soon as we hear them in whatever song they play we know its PF its their sound, yet every song is completely different , that is their brillince, no other band in the world can do that.

Hiya Mark, why don't you react to Roger Waters the front man of Pink Floyd who left the band in 1985 due to ego's and difference of opinions on the direction of the band. All Pink Floyd's lyrics are written by Roger Waters in every album from the beginning to classics like Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall..!! Anyways he went solo and his live concerts are incredible and mind-blowing (like when you watched Comfortably Numb Live in Earls Court The Pulse Tour) which I was lucky enough to be there but I saw Roger Waters in 2018 during his Us and Them World Tour (3yrs acres the World Tour) I saw him in Birmingham as couldn't get tickets for my home City Liverpool..!! Where Pink Floyd are God's..!! Watch Pigs (3 Different Ones) Roger Waters in Amsterdam off the live filmed concert for the DVD The Us and Them Tour..!! It will send your ADHD to Mars and back, the visuals are unbelievable and pure theatre..On the screens all around the Stadium are character chores of Donald Trump as Pigs is about the ruling tyrants of the world and their is also a giant flying Pig flying around the Stadium and Battersea Power Station built in the middle of the Stadium 200feet long and 200feet high which is on the cover of Animals by Pink Floyd which the song Pigs is on.. Please react to it Mark it will blow your mind I promise you

Alrighty dude. I have power watched your pink floyd reactions. Dude there awesome and I love how you get into the music. But you need to listen to the wall from start to finish as an album as the songs make more sense. If your looking for a proper mind f*ck try listening to echoes. Also in the flesh live by Roger water. Will blow you away. Keep doing what your doing and let the haters go f*ck oneselfs. 🤘😎

“She won’t let you fly, but she might let you sing.” That line spurred a million guys of my generation to seek therapy. Holy crap. You never saw so many kids really hurt their moms by playing this for them over petty tantrums (and real ones). Seriously, a lot of kids I knew used this for channeling their suburban angst. Kinda creepy I know but somehow it’s still this gorgeous song. Floyd were Fuckers. :)

    Heartbreaking song.
Young Pink (the movie character) has found out his father has died in the war.
This song shows the overprotective, traumatized single widow, guiding/misguiding her son, into a world of emotional isolation...
    Hence the Wall...
We see some of the results of this later on.
The Wall is a stunning, traumatizing story, with more layers than initially seen.
    Great reaction mate.
The Floyd album The Final Cut is overlooked by many, but another stunning album.
Possible tracks that might tweak your interest...
    The Gunner's Dream
    Fletcher Memorial Home
    Two Suns In The Sunset

I'm sure you'll get lots of 'advice' about how to hear and understand The Wall. However, do it your way. Yes, it's the daddy of all concept albums: part biographical, part fantasy - but the songs themselves mostly stand alone too. You don't have to listen to it as a whole, but that might aid understanding. Personally, I'd avoid advice to watch the film until you've heard it all as audio (up to you, obviously) and if after sating your thirst for songs from the album you need to know more, then listen to Roger Waters being interviewed by the late, great Thomas Vance where they discuss the album track by track. I'll message you with the link to the archived Friday Rock Show where this takes place (TH-cam won't let me post the link here). Have fun, it's a fabulous - if somewhat strange - album that was a big part of the soundtrack of my youth.

Love your reactions, Hector! You bring joy and laughter in a time where many need that. Thank you for always being honest, sharing your thoughts, and for including us all in your musical journeys! There is an amazing tribute to Pink Floyd that I think you will really enjoy! Please check out High Hopes Live from End of an Era by Nightwish! This is their tribute (NOT a cover) to PF! David Gilmore even posted this performance to his/the band's social media! I would also say that if you enjoy this song, continue on with Nightwish and maybe next do either Storytime or Ghost Love Score both songs live from Wacken 2013. Ghost Love Score live from Wacken 2013 is the most reacted to song on YT! High Hopes is just the guys of the band without their female lead vocalist. But I really think you'd enjoy that rabbit hole! They have a huge catalog to work through, and the Nightwish Army will come! Hope you and your family are more than well! Sending greetings and blessings from me and mine in Alabama!

I'm lucky enough to be going to see Roger Waters in Birmingham in May where I saw him in 2018 The Us and Them Tour, can't wait pure theatre..!! And as Roger's mantra is HUMANITY we are all equal and deserve Human Rights no matter your colour, creed, religion, sexuality, race and ethnicity..!! If only more people respected this 🤔🫰🫶 and Everton don't get relegated this season 🙏 the World would be a much better place..!! 💙 Peace Brother

Spot on with the interpretation, Mark, and the whole album is about the main character, Pink, going through a life of trauma--brought about by himself and others--and dealing with the consequences. It's a brilliant album, The Wall. I get that you're doing you're own thing, and I won't knock it, nor will I be disappointed if you reacted to the whole thing (a lot of reactors do it in chunks). In any case, still love what you're doing, and I still remember those first reactions to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"! Peace!

Sometimes having a diagnosed behavioural or cognitive disorder makes one worse, it takes the brakes off, it was seen as more positive than negative, never mind but doctors arnt always correct and over diagnose every little thing because it fits with today’s mental health obsession, ignorance is sometimes bliss , be lucky 🇬🇧👍

At the end he says 'Mother did IT need to be so high.' Talking about the wall of seclusion she contributed to building, by installing all of her fears in to him & being over protective. She also replies through the song 'of course Momma's gonna help build the wall. Many things contributed to the wall being built, she was just part of it rather than to blame for it all. She laid the foundations basically.

The entire lyrics of 'The Wall' were written by Roger Waters [ bass]. He would probably say that he wrote all of the music as well, but David would have words about that, and Richard, if he were still alive.
A lot of Roger's lyrics are quite autobiographical, especially when it comes to his Father, who was killed in WWII in Italy, and Roger has never really forgiven the world for it. Growing up as the youngest of two boys, with a war widow Mother, it might well be that she seemed over -protective and cossetting. Roger usually has much to say on most topics, but this is about the only place where he has shown this particular aspect.

Dark side of the moon and Wish you were here albums also are stories, mainly about the band and Syd Barret, one of the founders of PF. His life took a tragic path and he was removed from the band but meanwhile for ever loved by his friends..henceforth the albums.

as you no doubt recognize, this is NOT a "Mother's Day" tribute....in 'The Wall' movie/video, the singer is a messed up performer (musician) who was emotionally smothered by his mother, who "protected" him from living a real life , leading to his complete alienation from society, complete with drug dependence and violent tendencies.......thanks to other commenters (below) for also recognizing this......this is a Roger Waters masterpiece.......

Ah, the 1980 live version is the best. With its extended solo! For best sound find the 'is there anybody out there?' Version (audio only)

Yes, the soothing voice of Gilmour is the over-controlling mother. As a matter of fact the song is a lullaby, you can tell by listening the bass line (played by David here, like in 75% songs of this album). And yes, the rhythm section is the highlight of the track, helped by the precise drum of Jeff Porcaro (from the band ToTo) as a session musician. The "high" in the end is "the wall", too high for the kid Pink (played by Waters with his distinguished tone).

Hey Mark, James here. New subscriber. I found you through your Tom MacDonald reactions and have branched out from there. Good stuff!
Have you listened to, or reacted to anything by the band Rush? If not, I suggest starting with the song "Tom Sawyer"; you won't be disappointed.

Great reaction! This entire album has a movie that goes along with it. You were right on the money with this analysis. I can't wait for you to react to hey you. To me that's one of the best guitars solos on the album. Great work as always.

From what I understand, this is pretty autobiographical. His father was killed in WWII, and his mother became obsessed with his safety. I could be wrong……

Lot's of Floyd I see...well there is a lot but it seems to be centered on the 4 classic albums, you know the ones, here's a thought, try a few older tracks say like "Free Four" a short but catchy rocker, not a happy song though, yeah like Floyd has any happy songs, others are "Fearless" "Candy and a Currant Bun" a very trippy 60's psychedelic tune, from that very first album "Bike" and are you aware that their very first single in 1967 "Arnold Layne" is about a cross dresser who steals women's clothes off clothing lines? There are more little gems of course but try those.

You got the meaning, yes The Wall is a Masterpiece, like a Theatrical Musical, there is a whole movie about this album about Pinky and his life journey (a must watch movie), and note: this is not a song to dedicate to your mother on mother's day...

We all realize now, don't we, that the next few months are going to be like watching someone try to read a book by picking chapters at random... Completely irrational, yes, and It may not always be pretty, as we watch this poor sap trying to keep up, but it is likely to be funny, at the very least! So, let the shit-show begin! Let's see how quickly the 'not caring for any kind of proper direction' will feel like he's shooting himself in the foot! ;-]
Not really hating, lad, just having a laugh at your expense to feed the algorithm. Don't worry, even if you mix it all up, it's still fucking brilliant and you will be set straight by the movie, later. Do try to watch that one linearly, please! lol
    Cheers! ;-]

I’ve always seen it as a weird conversation. I know you always hate people saying “listen to tunes in order” but literally with The Wall, it’s kind of essential. Watch the film, amazeballs, you’ll see. Haters go fuck one’s self!

It's a common misconception that Pink's problem here is his mother. It's deeper than that. The album plays out in the mind of our main character who is comatose on the floor of some hotel somewhere. This is a sick individual. His mind is searching for confirmation to justify checking out of life like Syd Barrett did. In this song, Pink finds justification by putting blame on his mother. Just listening to the lyrics and you can hear how twisted his mind is. His mother's voice (sung by David Gilmour) is how he needs to remember his mother to justify his predicament. Through the whole album Pink blames everyone but himself.

High Helicopter mum destroys every talent and freedom of choice: it wasnt meant to be so high by nature, a post war trauma safety illusion wall the mother even doesnt realize her buildup, so she cant answer you questions... The only possibility is a shizoprenic self talk of the "beloved" forever child...

This isn’t their peak work (Animals or WYWH for me) but it’s still pretty amazing if a little heavy handed via Waters, but shit the guy grew up fatherless from the war so cut him a break. This is the cornerstone song, it really gets ugly after this on the album lol.

Lol it's literally a movie!!! This song is a piece of the puzzle that tells the story. As someone who has struggled with mental health for most of my life, I can say that this whole album (and please, please) watch the film, has meant so much to me. Mainly because I have built my own "Wall".
