    Mate, your channel is the only one that I know of that features classic vintage puzzles and this is one of the things that makes it so unique. I used to do puzzles like these when I was a kid and even though I only do modern puzzles nowadays, I still enjoy watching the old-school images you bring back to light. Cheers!

      Hello fellowpuzzler wow thats so nice to hear mate, wow, makes me very happy to get a positive feedback like this thank you so much! Yeah i have so many old beauties here that i just cant give away hehe also have a lot of modern ones but yeah the old ones are still my favourites!

    Some of those older puzzles can be much more vibrant than the box image, which is often very faded over time. I still wonder what the vintage puzzle manufacturers' fascination with thatched cottages was though, there are so so many versions of it!!

    • @RicPuzzles
      @RicPuzzles  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Onepiece! indeed, that is such a great observation, the box fades overtime, but the content remains vibrant for decades to come, I love that about puzzles. thats why I always say, dont judge the book hehehe. I even buy puzzles without poxes, just got an AMAZING vintage-looking Star Wars puzzle that came in a plastic bag but looks like a Ravensburger ultra high quality! haha I know right? I dont quite see the fascination either, but ive done some digging and apparently it might be a New Zealand thing to sort of get obsessed with UK villages for example because of their ideal charm, not sure if you know this but NZ is all about property and houses it's all people talk about. go figure! was it/is it popular in your country too?

    Such a pretty image. So peaceful. Enjoyed your thought process in putting together this puzzle. I always have just a spark of anxiety when I start a puzzle. A brief thought of "what was I thinking." Then I settle in and enjoy the process. I get very pleased with myself when I can put chunks together. Lol Thanks for sharing.

      Hello Laverne! glad to see you here today :-) tell about anxiety in the beginning! have you ever stare at your puzzles (if you have a few choices) and have to think many times before you start one? It's a bit like that for me, I totally get you! and hey glad to hear you enjoyed the process here, It's very hard to shorten up a video, if it was for me I would post a 5 hour video 😹😹 detailing every single move hehe thats how much I like puzzles. thanks again for tuning in!

    Thank you for sharing your insights on traditional puzzles and showing this puzzle off. It was more interesting to put together than I thought and...this particular cut was quite tricky because a lot of the pieces fit together in ways I've never seen before. Thank you for sharing again. It really made me want to hunt for photographed images on puzzle. I will also look into this brand of puzzles because of how they fit together. It seems so fun!! Also the little window papercut trick on isolating details on the image of the puzzle was very helpful!

      Hi Spoon! Thank you so much for enjoying this with me today! I had a lot of fun with it and surely wanted to bring a good classic vibe to the channel too 😁 this brand, holdson, is local to nz, the factory is literally 20 mins from my place! might also be a uk brand? All of the 500s in the late 90s were so well done, did you see how snug the pieces were?! Such a joy! And hey thx again for enjoying this! There will a few more very classic puzzles in the near future fingers crossed!

    I'm currently getting ready to start a succulent puzzle and staring at the poster that came with and asking myself why i choose this. I started taking pieces out and putting them on the poster to reassure myself that i can do this puzzle.
    Im going to keep your tips in mind!

    What a delightful surprise to find that you have a new video, Ric ! I wasn't expecting a video for a while due to your work schedule. I very much like the image of Dartmoor Cottages and I would certainly prefer doing that puzzle than some of the "modern" puzzles. Your tips for assembling a classic puzzle are very helpful. I particularly like your suggestion of researching information about the puzzle - - the history of what is depicted, the artist, etc. This certainly increases the interest and the pleasure in working the puzzle. Please let me add one tip I've found helpful in working puzzles: change your position in relation to the puzzle whether it is to stand up or to change seating to another side of the table for just a bit. So many times a different angle of view of the same puzzle you've been working on leads to the discovery of a piece or pieces that fit right in !

      Hello Maggie! Wow thank you for tuning in for this! I thought i could work on my videos in the next few days and have a few new vids ready for November and it worked out at least for one vid hehe! Oh my… that tip is really good, i do that all the time bit because it’s such a second nature i forgot to mention it! But what a great suggestion 👍🏻🙏 again thank you for enjoying my video and hey who knows u may get a little surprise in coming days! (I really wanted to have my halloween video ready but cant promise at this stage! Fingers crossed!) after that yep…gonna be very tricky indeed!

    NEW VIDEO!!! 😊
    Okay, I'll keep my comments together.
    1 - I love that "spiral" shape you do with the trays.
    2 - The window cut out of that black material to help with a puzzle piece IS BRILLIANT!!! I don't think I've ever heard of that before. BRAVO!!! 👏
    3 - Now we have "ET Heads", "Frankenstein Shoulders", "Burning Angels", & "Shoulder Pads"? Luckily I wasn't drinking or else the tv would be wet from laughter. But since you did graphics, I now can't help but see what you're referring to! 😂
    But the biggest take aways (other than you having more "face time")...was your overall point....HAVE FUN! 🎉🎊🎆🎇✨🎈🕺💃🧩
    BTW, PAH was beside me again tonight! 🐈👽

      Hello Wayne! So great to hear from you and getting your feedback, wow it’s so cool to hear things like that, like i never think about what the reaction would be - to the things i say - as for me they are part of my own thought processing hahah nice to know you had a bit of a laugh with it 😁 im so proud of my trays - i made about 25, each with their own story , some of the wood comes from places one would never imagine like the side of a busy road etc. and they all under my puzzle board, one of these days ill do a tour or something and show everyone how i make them! But yeah i like to show them off with a spiral - glad you noticed! Say hi to your furry friend for me. 🫠 i had just got up the day i recorded it - not my greatest looks so far. I tend to feel more camera worthy towards late afternoon 😂

      @@RicPuzzlesYou still looked as handsome as ever. 😊
      BTW, hope you're feeling better from being sick last time.
      My habit is to have all the pieces face up beside where I'm working. I guess it's my mind going: "Do I see any red pieces? Is there any house pieces? Where's the edges/corners?" When I DO sort, I usually use Glad/Tupperware food containers...because they have a lid; & therefore prevent any pieces being lost/damaged.
      On a personal note, I usually look for 1000+ pieces. I believe that was what I started with when I was younger.
      How are your pets, greenhouse, & meals? 🍛

    • @RicPuzzles
      @RicPuzzles  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey hey! It’s so odd that new comments just appear out of the blue in my dashboard! Apologies for not replying before. They just show up days later! 😭 pets arw doing well, food yum also good. Just had a huge green salad from my garden - rockets lettuces and spinach leaves so yum! Good on you for sorting too, i know what u mean about having the pieces safe with a close container. I think a lot of people do that. I like my trays as i can stack them and they are really sturdy and light at the same time but containers may be a good alternative too, i dont know how people solve puzzles from piles of pieces roughly sorted?! It must take them the ‘Cinderela approach’ or trial and error ?! I prefer to do it like you said, all facing up. I wouldn’t be able to solve it any other way! And hey thx for the compliments! Sometimes i have to record my talking-head video intros very early in the day, sometimes after a hang over or from late night sleep, so it’s good to know i didn’t scare you away!!!🫠

    • @waynebennett745
      @waynebennett745 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RicPuzzles Yeah...there are other things I think are through & then here come some more "out of the blue".
      You eat spinach with salad? I usually hear spinich as it's own dish.
      I like the trays idea because you can spread them out & they're portable. As to the containers, the lids keep the pieces safe from pets (cats) who like to swat at the pieces...so, this way I know they aren't messing with them behind my back. I had a smaller puzzle I did that I was missing 2 pieces. My dad found 1 where the cats had swatted under some shoes. We've never found that last 1. 😰 I know it's just a puzzle...but you just get that sad/yucky feeling when it's almost done & that last piece is nowhere to be found. & those that probably know where it's at can't tell you.
      Reminds me of our 1st cat TidBit who had a favorite toy mouse. & when he lost it, or knocked it somewhere he couldn't reach, you could tell Tiddy would be upset so my roommate & I had to hunt for it. When TB passed, we had him creammated, & put the toy mouse with his ashes.
      Hangover from what? 😉 Any favorite beverage?
      Scare me away? Nah. I figure I might frighten you with these lengthy texts! 😟

    • @RicPuzzles
      @RicPuzzles  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Wayne! First of all you don’t scare me away with lengthy texts at all! 😁 it’s all good, sadly as i mentioned previously, no matter how much i change the settings, i dont get notified about replies so many comments just don’t show up for me unless i go hunting 😂 so please hang tight i find them eventually. Tidbit? What cute name for a cat mate, same here all of my animals have been cremated over the years , but a naughty cat! Stole your puzzle pieces eh?! My cat doesn’t do that kind of thing, heheh so i dont have that kind of worry 🤪 as to the spinach, yes it is however a different kind, not the small leaves, it’s like much bigger and tasteless leaf, not sure why it caries the same name as the strong spinach we know!!

    Well Hello, didn't expect a video today... This was a very nice informative video. Thank you for taking your time and giving us time to look. One thing I would add to your list is lighting. The more muted the image the better lighting is needed. Your image looked very clear and crisp. I struggle with darker images due to lighting, still trying to figure out a good solution. Hope your days go smoothly!!!

      Hi Kathy! haha yeah I might have expressed myself not very clearly sadly, I meant the next 30 days - but im still working on new videos slowly, sadly without set dates Like every 2 weeks like before, But I may be able to manage it slowly, we have Halloween coming (video almost ready!) and then the Wysocki challenge for the 10th Nov, but after that omg I have no idea, November's work schedule gonna kill me! hehe I appreciate the feedback on this little beauty, some parts are blurry but most of it is nice and crisp indeed! glad u noticed and definitely I should have mentioned lights - but I will add to my future lists - already plotting something here. I am so lucky that I have just natural light for my puzzles, whenever it gets dark I just stop as most puzzles have that not very intelligent design of being shiny. (something I raise often). why do companies make shiny puzzles omg! u can only work on them if bending over the puzzles LOL! thank you so much you too! have a wonderful day!

I did not do well timing myself...for Petes Hall.... kept forgetting to set the timer etc etc just proves I would never be good at speed puzzling...as I start another puzzle tonight, I puzzle mostly at night after my day winds down... maybe , just a suggestion , ask on your channel what works best for everyone , hopefully you get good responses... Hi Ric, many thanks once again for your videos. Being colourblind as I am red/green and red/brown can be a wee bit impossible to determine. So piece shapes are the go-to. There are loads of puzzle tricks to the trade out there. We are only just learning from starting in March this year. So if you have and other tips eg collage jigsaws, busy jigsaws with loads of images etc, please pass on your tips.
    Ps. Desperate for puzzle trays… we await your next video mate👍😃😎🇦🇺🇯🇪

      Hello Mark! Oh mate appreciate the feedback very much 🙌 thanks!! Wow what an interesting thing to know - I have never thought of colour blindness in the puzzle world - that would be a fascinating topic to bring up maybe one day, glad to hear you are able to go around and use other ways to complete a puzzle. Must be very challenging for you?! Indeed shapes are your best bet! I wonder do you have to look at shapes before you buy a puzzle? Some of them are all the same shape so it must be difficult for you!? And hey yep I will be making a little video about the boards! Plz stand by! Thx mate have a great weekend ahead 👍😄

      Hi Ric, Thanks for your reply. I definitely avoid if I can gradient puzzles and lean towards non-ribbon cut brands , like Springbok. I did a Schmidt puzzle which had a lot of night sky with hints of blue and green which almost did me in 😂. It’s definitely a challenge but I enjoy puzzling so much. Till soon. M

    • @RicPuzzles
      @RicPuzzles  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @markb933h hello mate! It’s my pleasure. Indeed I think irregular shapes are definitely way easier for your colour blindness, makes sense to me. I have included a few observations about this if you don't mind in my wysocki puzzles which will be online on the 10th Nov hope it helps others out there who may be wondering. Hah a sky puzzle must have been a nightmare! 😄 anyways mate thank you so much for the feedback. I'm learning a lot from you as well.

    All very helpful and useful information. It's the sort of thing I do, looking for shape and colour. DonnaLouise has a method called Cinderella shoe, whereby you take one piece and try it in all available pieces. That would be helpful when doing solid colour areas or an area where it all looks very similar. It can be tedious but it gets results. I'm doing that with my current puzzle by New Everest called Macaroons. If you google it you should be able to find an image.

    • @RicPuzzles

      Hi PuzzlePiece! thanks for the great feedback for this, yes I know who DonnaLouise is she lives in NZ as well! haha cinderella shoe method! thats hilarious but definitely handy for totally solid pieces indeed! I'll check out her channel, we dont interact much sadly as she's all about speed puzzling - something I stay as far from as possible but good to know this tip! the puzzle you are doing is fantastic looks, so colourful! I think I would highly enjoy that, Ive done a chocolate one not too long ago and it was like that, so bright and cheerful!

      @@RicPuzzles Yes, I'll let you know but I don't expect to get this done quickly. It's one of those where you stare at the pieces for ages, then get a run of putting pieces together, stare again etc. I am pulling pieces out by colour but still not easy. I know what you mean about speed puzzling, not my thing either. I like to take my time. ⏲

      Ah yes exactly like me! I normally do one puzzle every 2 weeks. I do a little bit every day when i can with no rush! I love the whole experience could be starring and solving for hours heheh. Just like wood carving which i also do a lot, if you let me i’ll just forget the world! You need to drag me out of it! 😂 Sure no rush with yours! Just curious about how long one would take to do it on a normal casual speed- bet it is very challenging though!

      @@RicPuzzles Finally finished the puzzle. It took me 6 hours and 30 minutes. I basically pulled out pieces according to the colour of the macaroon. I also found that shape sorting helped as well as that made it easier to find the piece I needed. I did have to keep stopping to rest my eyes and brain! 👀 🧠 Looks good and I shall be taking a photo of it in the morning, too late now. 😃
