  • I went to my local woodland with my Canon 1DMkiii for for a couple of hours just to get some fresh air and some woodland photography in. My Canon 1DMk3 performed better than I thought it might given the rather awful conditions for photography. The 1D Mark 3 comes equipped with an APS-H sized sensor which gives a 1.3x crop factor which coupled with my Canon 70-200mm f/4L made for a lot of fun. I'll admit this isn't my best photography but it was good fun to get out with a camera again!

    I love watching videos of people out enjoying the "joy of photography". Photography isn't about the latest and greatest, it's about the image and the person behind the view finder.

    Well I sent 1D Mark 3 my off to MPB as a trade in and they sent it back as they didn’t want it, so I decided to keep it and I took it out for the first time since 2015. I had forgotten how nice it was in the hand and a joy to use. I used to shoot the original Canon Eos 1 film cameras which I still own. The n the 1D 2 and the 1DS mark 2. I sold those 2 but the 1 D3 although like a tank is lighter than those 2 and so much nicer to use. It’s an all weather camera and built like a house brick. Great video and images. I liked and subscribed.

      Thanks for watching Simon. It’s a lovely camera to use and I personally really like the look of the files still. For me cameras like that you own for 2 reasons;
      1) It looks cool as hell
      2) They’re great fun to use
      I’m a fan of older camera gear, the modern clinically sharp look I find boring not to mention expensive.

    Thank you Chris for bringing this one to us.
    I own this camera as well and it is a beast.
    Nice presentation in this video Chris.
    One great thing about this video Chris is that you
    aren’t shooting with a bloody Sony camera.
    At one stage there i thought TH-cam was going to change its name to
    SonyTube.
    Well done on this one.
    Cheers

      Always have been and always will be a Canon fan boy. First camera was a 350D and I don’t intent to leave now. It’s a really good fun camera to use. Sony cameras are the “cool kids” I think. They do some nice things but they’re not for me.

    To Chris or any 1D3 shooters: will this mark 3 tether with a Tether Tools cable or is it too old? If not, then will the 1D mark 4 do it?

    Hello Chris just stumbled upon your videos, great advert for photography made me want to get out and take some photographs. I too have and enjoy using old pro cameras and am constantly amazed at the quality of the pictures they produce. Keep the good work up. now a subscriber..

      Thank you Tim I really appreciate that. I love playing with older cameras. Just because time has moved on doesn’t make them bad cameras. Too many people worry about the latest and greatest and the rest get lost in the mix.

    Trust what I am about to say, back in 2009 I had amazing large wall prints made with 10 MP Canon Pro-sumer body with the help of resizing software. I have shot with the 1D Classic, I D Mark II and 1D Mark 4 , if a photographer is desiring to crop massively using these cameras they may not hold up. But for solid enlargements they can handle the job with proper capturing and post processing.

      I tend to pay more attention to getting a crop I want in camera when using low resolution bodies - for pretty much the reasons you’ve mentioned above.

    Sorry to hear about your accident Chris, glad you are on the mend. I used to like the aps-h sensor size on the 1d3 and 4 bodies. They do sound like someone has a football rattle when they are shooting in burst mode. Keep the vlogs coming.

    Hello Chris! congrats on the super video content and for the videos with the Canon 1D Mark 3. Personally I think it is a wonderful camera even now in 2022 and in 2023. It was Canon's flagship camera and it still holds great. I wouldn't shy to take it to professional photo sessions such as weddings, family portraits, or anything that has good light. The autofocus system is just perfect, it does not have the new eye focus or hundreds of focus points but the focus is accurate where you are setting it. I am using it with my 70-200 f/4L USM lens just like yours and if I want to take wide shots I am using my Canon 24mm f/1.4L MKII lens. My clients do not see and honestly do not care if it is a 15 year old Camera, if you are using proper light setup and know how to set your clients to pose and capture their emotions everything is just perfect.
    This is my secondary camera, My main camera is the Canon 1DX (first version) I bought the 1D MK III about 2 years ago mainly because I needed additional batteries for my 1DX, and I bough the 1D MKIII with 2 batteries in top shape for 250 dollars. But as I said I would not hesitate to take the 1D MKIII to a professional photo project if needed with good L lenses and strobes. Cheers!

      What a great comment. I’ve looked at the first generation 1Dx but it’s still a little on the pricey side for me. I want to use my 1D3 more often but knowing it’s age and being unsure of the shutter count makes me nervous at times.

    • @rares9283
      @rares9283 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisBaitson No worries about its age. This camera can go through 400.000 shutter actuations without any problem. You can eyeball estimate the shutter health by pulling up the mirror and checking visually the shutter at least. If the shutter blades are not warped or blackened or have spots on them then you are fine, another symptom is that it has a strange sound when making a photo, it should have a somewhat dampened sound when a lens is on it. If it is really loud or has a squeak then it may be at the end of its life. Cheers!

    I just got my canon 1d mark iii, but i have a question for you, how do you work your approaches and how do they work on this camera?
    How do you get sharp photos with great detail? I know that in some cases it is the handling of the diaphragm and stability. I just want to know how to correctly use the focus points of this camera.

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Centre focus point I always used and shutter speed at least equal to focal length. Stop down the aperture 1-2 stops and you’ll be in the ball park.

      @@ChrisBaitson Do you recommend a 70-300mm f2.8 as the first lens for this camera or which do you consider to be the most versatile that covers a bit of landscape and portraiture in good lighting?
