Born in the 70s, my favorite childhood memories were of school friends and school lunch. Sadly this generation will never know what a really good school lunch is. Ty for sharing, I'm gonna try this 😉

I’m a lunchroom lady and you are so right! We had it so good! They have repeatable food mostly.... pre packaged! So so sad! Michelle Obama took a lot of good food out of the schools with her push for “better” for you food. Sorry, but i think home cookin is better than all the preservatives they put in the re-heat able processed food!

Amen to that. We had some very good made from scratch meals just like my Mom cooked at home. We had our very own garden. We worked our behinds off every summer in tobacco and the garden. Oh precious memories!

Yes, I'm nearly 70 and we had delicious food. Homemade yeast rolls were so good. Sometimes we had Graham crackers and peanut butter for desert. Often the lunchroom ladies would put out extras for whoever wanted some. Granny and community ladies canned food for school lunches back in the time of local schools.

So true, our cafeteria ladies made homemade donuts, pizza and they made real biscuits and yeast rolls. I'm retired from public school and now everything is prepackaged and warmed. I would tell the students about the breakfast and lunches back in the day.

After reading through the recipe all I could think of was how excited we were as kids when we could smell peanut butter bars in the morning when we got to school😁 Even better than brownies. Our Lunch Ladies knew us all by name and it didn’t even occur to us what a gift that was. Thanks a bunch and have a grand day!

Rural Ohio and we had these every Wednesday with the rectangular pizzas with the little rabbit pellet pepperoni! Sooooo good! We'd also get to help the lunch ladies put everything together too! We got to work for our lunches! :-) I don't think they even bothered offering fruit cup options for deserts on those days! Maybe a few for the peanut allergy kids. :-)

I don't remember this when I was a child, but our cafeteria lady made the best jumbo peanut butter cookies. Yes they use to really cook food, now days they just warm up premade pizza, burgers, potatoes then add some fruit, milk, maybe a juice. They may actually fry or bake some chicken with rice and gravey with vegetables for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

I'm just a tad younger than you. For breakfast; they also used to make waffles floating in warm syrup, cream of wheat, oatmeal with raisins on the side, mounds of brown sugar, bacon, sausage links, scrambled eggs, and a choice of milk, chocolate milk, orange juice or grape juice. We could pick some eggs, a choice of meat and a choice of either the pancakes, waffles, toast or the cereal. On the end of the line, they also had those little boxes of fruit loops, rice crispies, cheerios, raisin bran, grape nuts or corn flakes to chose from. They had little pats of butter and little jelly, jam and honey thingies. They even had hot sauce for your eggs. I LOOOVED getting to school early. Breakfast was only 33 cents!

Thank God my lunch was so g theses times. The food was homemade. As good as grandma. They should bring back those days. I bet its cheaper to cook in my day than it is now. Lunch room ladies these days need to know how to cook like their grandmas. We had a garden at our school and a farm with chickens and cows and pigs. We had a club called FFA. If you are old enough and from the south you know what FFA means. To them it was and honor to have that blue coat.

I was in school in the late 1950s and all of the 1960s, and in our grade schools, there were true "lunchroom ladies," local farm wives who were paid to come in and cook our school lunches from scratch each day. It was a real treat and privilege to be chosen to go do kitchen duty with the ladies---it was SUCH a privilege that only the best behaved students could work in the kitchen, the farm ladies taking safety and cleanliness, as well as obedience, absolutely seriously, and only us "older" kids (6th and 7th graders) could be chosen to do the work.
I was chosen 3 times in those two school years, and I got to see how to make some incredible dishes, including the very best macaroni and cheese EVER, among other things. Most of the time, the women were so very busy cooking and getting everything to the serving window in a timely manner, they didn't have time to teach us anything---the chosen students worked in the window as servers (scooping food onto the plates for each passing student and adult), and then we helped with cleanup after we'd all had our own lunches. But they would gladly and patiently tell us, and show us, how to make some things during those lunches when the work crew all sat together and shared a delicious meal, and I happily took the opportunity to learn as much as I could from them!
Loved that time in school; each lunchroom/kitchen assignment was one week long, and along with my father having taught me the basics of cooking and baking when I was eight years old, it instilled in me a love of cooking that's with me today, at the ripe old age of 67 1/2.

I need to make these in honor of my aunt, who died a few weeks ago after battling cancer for years. She started as a lunch lady, and ended up in charge of the school lunch program for her county. There's a lot of poverty there, and she made it her mission to ensure that every single child in the county had a minimum of two good meals per day, no matter how poor their families were. Honestly, I think she did more for those kids than even their teachers could.

I only had the lunch lady brownies when I went to school. It wasn't until I started dating my husband when I was introduced to this little piece of peanut butter heaven. My sister- in- law's sister-in-law made them and when I sunk my teeth into them for the first time, I seriously thought I died and went to heaven. But instead of frosting, she drizzled melted milk chocolate on top and I kid you not, it tasted like a peanut butter cup🤤. So, I encourage you the next time you make these, drizzle on the chocolate and I promise you that you won't be disappointed☺

Hi, I have just found your channel. I love the way you explain everything in detail. I lived in the USA growing up. I was born in the sixties. I remember the food in the schools, absolutely delicious. Now I live in Greece ,Rhodes. Unfortunately my kids grew up without hot lunches . Here the system is very very different. They eat outside while they're having a break. It's absolutely ridiculous they have nowhere to sit down.If you don't have anything from home then they can go to the canteen that's outside to get something but still they have to be standing while eating. I feel so nostalgic. Thank you for bringing back sweet memories. Hugs and kisses.

U r ABSOLUTELY right Tammy!! These r on my TOP 5, maybe even 2, favorites from the lunch room! Our lunch room was straight down the hall from our classrooms, grades 1-8 n our small school! We could smell everything they were cooking!! My next favorite thing was HUGE fluffy hot yeast rolls always served with a side of butter and cold applesauce! I feel sorry for our kids now days that have to eat pre-packaged food n 15 minutes while barely talking! Ty for posting recipe!

Oh, I remember these! Started school in 60s in Georgia. Cafeteria was in sort of a lower level under the school, so the smell just filled the classrooms. Torture for a few hours until we went to lunch! Mmm.

Those look very good. I don't really remember if our school lunches here Mo. In the 80's had those. But they probably did..But my favorite part of our Schools lunch was when they made Pizza's. They was almost as big as our plate. Our School Lunchroom ladies was very good cooks back then.😊😊 Nothing like Jiff. I use Jiff's natural PB..☺️

We had them in southwest missouri schools but no icing
Ive found that getting recipes tp taste right, like my moms, if it calls for margarine, use margarine. The brand my mom used for years is still available and nothing makes mashed potatoes taste like hers but that!

I miss the school lunches from my childhood as well. Everything was cooked from scratch like fried chicken, meatloaf, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes(not instant), hot baked rolls(not frozen), and fresh make pies! Oh, my! The pies were the best from a cafeteria worker who made pie crust so tender and flakey that it melted in your mouth like butter!! I ended marrying her grandson. LOL!!! Today the cafeteria workers use frozen and pre-made food to heat and serve. No real baking or cooking. Frozen, packaged food to slap on the line and serve. How do I know? I worked in the school cafeteria line when my kids were in school. One or two treats remained on the menu peanut butter bars like Tammy made here, and chocolate peanut butter bars simulator to Reese's. But believe me, they were so much better!!

Me, too, sir! I'm 67, so went to school when lunches were real, genuine food, cooked from scratch by our local farm women, who came into the school's kitchen every day to cook for the students and staff (they were paid, of course). Nothing, but nothing, not even my own good cooking, measures up to what those women could turn out!

I wish someone had a recipe for what we referred to as "school boy sandwiches". They were a cross between loose meat and sloppy joes, but less sweet and "tomatoey". They stained the bun as though there might have been some chili powder in them. This was back in the early 60s. If anyone remembers the old Taco Bell "Bell Beefer" sandwich, they were a lot like the School Boy.
