Never say this to an atheist!

  • Never tell an atheist that they were never a true believer. In this video, I talk about my background as a religious fundamentalist and a true-blue believer. When you tell someone that they were never a real Christian, Muslim, Mormon, etc. You're negating their past and being rude and pretentious. Plus it's a no true Scotsman fallacy!

Holy Koolaid I am not sure if you know this. But that whole “Oh you weren’t really a Christian.” Comment that is said is in all actuality said specifically to piss you off or make you mad or upset. It’s because once you are angry or feeling some type of strong emotion to that your brain can shut down thinking. So it throws you off in the conversation and is an attempt to purposefully insult you.

Well i see it NOW as a kind of badge of honor. Christians do so much dubious shit in the defense of their beliefs that not being one of the lot sounds better than I deserve to be called :D But as i wanted SO much to belong to the "in crowd" when i was young I see your point. When you actually try to become a better believer yourself and invest a lot of emotions and work into trying to convince yourself it hurts to hear "well you are not good enough and all your effort is wasted you'll never belong to us"...
Still best thing that ever happend to me, giving up on that desire!

@Ad Lockhorst That is (I would argue) due to the fact that the mormons are not very known in the EU.
Most people I know from university would have to look up what mormons belief is in prior to answering it. And most I have talked about cults vs religions admit that mormons are "christian" - in the sense of believing in Jesus christ - but are a mior sect within christianity.
      But here is another one.
Depending on where you are in the US, people would argue that catholics are no christians.
It in general comes down to a no true scotsman fallacy.
Religiouspeople "denounce" any denomination they deem to be weird or dangerous "not a real XYZ" so they don't have to adress the topic at hand and in course of that would have to defend their version of XZY.
I've witnessed that with many of my family members, when talking about baptist churches: They are not christians they are twisted cults who don't even follow official christian teachings.
And even my uncle who married a lutheran protestant as a catholic back in the 80s was on the brink of beeing denounced because he married a "non-true-christian".
So anyone who says "xzy is not a christian" has brought on the burden of prove on themself to define what a christian is and why XYZ is not. Because I as an atheist take people at face value, if they believe that Jesus is the son of god, who died for humanity and therefore is Christ, is a christian in my book. Just another denomination of christian who can't seem to get a hang on what it is the bible teaches.

The cult I joined taught that non members were not true believers, and that anyone who ever left the cult was not a true believer to begin with. So, they had an air tight doctrine right there; you could never know if your heart was true until you died in faith. That's pretty damn convenient for discrediting former members like me!

I can relate to your story, but I was unlucky to be part of a more dangerous type of religious group. I was raised as a Muslim in a strict and religious family, and I've also experienced religion from the very inside of it. The only problem is that even though I'm pretty much independent from my family now and I live in a less religious country, I still can't come out as an atheist. I fear to be judged and hated by my family, or even worse than that - being attacked by other Muslims or even by the government of the country where my parents live and which I sometimes visit.
For several years I was thinking about creating my own youtube channel and sharing my sincere views and feelings on different topics including religion, but I don't do that out of fear of my identity being revealed.
If you guys can come out as an atheist and still be in a good relationship with your relatives, then you should know that there are people like me out there who just don't have that luxury.

I started out agnostic and was convinced by the internal and external evidences found in the Bible. It's a fascinating course of study if you can approach it from an unbiased standpoint --- and I mean that from both sides of the coin. Don't go in thinking you want to find out it's true, nor you want to disprove it. Do the research, study, and cross reference it with other texts of the time periods... and draw your own conclusions. Too many people are lazy and just believe what they hear others say about it. I went on a search for myself. I didn't listen to Christian opinions and I didn't listen to agnostics. As a result, I personally came away with the knowledge that most church denominations have it all wrong... there is so much they are just making up as they go along! For instance, watch these tv preachers who like to say god is "telling" them something. That is code for "I don't what I'm talking about and this isn't in the Bible. Your mileage may vary.

      i'm not entirely sure.
certainly a rational being will not "pick" what is desireable but accept what seems most realistic.
i do think it's possible that very irrational beings can influence their own perception of reality. like hallucinating where the subconscious desire actually deceives the senses.
to me, whether i like a world view or not has zero relevance. i will accept the worst world view as real if there are convincing arguments. even if i hate it.
i have heard people say "i believe this because it sounds [insert positive emotion]". this terrible pseudologic disgusts me. some people actually think their preferences determine reality. it makes me sick.
i always say my atheism is not a choice but an inevitable conclusion. choice is an expression of will, but my will plays no role.
that's why if a christian were to tell me that i "chose hell" as a justification, he would be just wrong.

@CH2517Joan But that's the point. If you condition people into believing something, they're convinced. You can't spontaneously decide that gravity isn't real and then switch back to knowing it's real a moment later. You can _say_ you stopped momentarily, but you can't switch belief on and off like a light.
Even the idiot flat earther people don't one day decide on a whim to stop believing that things fall down when you let go of them. They have to be convinced, even if it's by terrible, childish arguments, that gravity isn't real.
The most foolish believer in nonsense who abandoned reason in favor of idiocy didn't take a shower and go "Hmm. I'm bored. Is making an assumption based upon their own emotional reaction. After all, as I know from my own experience, being "born again" is an emotional experience, an overwhelmingly powerful one. My body shook, my legs trembled. I know what the experience is like. To later realize that this was all a product of my own emotional state rather than "the Holy Spirit" took some time to process. Every single waking moment of my life was spent doing something at least vaguely Christian. It's a miracle I was ever able to escape.

"I never thought to question the veracity of any of it." That is because a large percentage of the stories of the Bible (and most other religions) carry the message that questioning the deity is evil.

I was brought up in a strict catholic house.
Church once a week - and if you know catholic sermons, they are not short nor fun. Praying before any meal and prior to going to bed.
Now few years later I am an open atheist and still get those comments.
But I take them lightly due to 2 reasons:
      1. They often come not out of spite but sincerity - at least in my case
2 .They affect me the same as if a person talks to me about lord of the ring or any other fantasy story. I sometimes even chime in and just for the fun of it pretend that Odin and his children are real and talk about them the same way as someon talks about Jesus it's so much fun seeing them struggeling to refute my asuptions because they know I make them on the same grounds as they make theirs and if they refute mine they also have to accept that others refute theirs on the same ground.
Now I say this out of a position of "power".
i have not to fear any legal repercussions due to me beeing an open atheist, and I'm so independant on my family that even if they'd denounce me I could go on without them (well it would hurt but my livelyhood doesn't depend on it')

    • @alberich3099

@ozlo houser brickballs Yea the agnostic atheism is quite a "new label" Which was primary "introduced" by the unholy trinity, and is due to the definition of the words themself.
Gnostism is about knowlage - so in realiy everybody is agnostic about god but because due to historic use of the word there are so many different definitions about it.
If a person uses agnostic XYZ then they state their knowlage about a topic AND their stance on it. e.g. agnostic athist is I don't know whether or not a god exists, but I don't belief it does.
But if a person uses it that way you will also know they in general don't think a real agnostic (middle between atheism or theism) exists.
I'm one of them, Either you believe a deity exists (doesn't matter which) or you don't. The Idea of knowlage about the existance of a deity, is secondary at that point.
But I also know taht often theists, want to use agnostic as having no belief either way to portrey atheist as the oppesite of the religious fundamentalists and discredit the label atheist even further - have a look into Jordan Petersons Atheists are fundamentalists arguement.

    • @alberich3099

      It's not, don't worry.
As a child you are programmed (evolutionary) to belief what parents and figured oauthority tell you.
As our survival depended on it. And religions have quite a good way in stopping overthinking and make their claim irrefuteble at times.
Yes I figured out some things early on, such as "baby jesus brings presants (in germany its baby jesus not santa)" as it was "testable" for me, but I had no means in testing the claim there is a deity who watches over you and demands your following or you'll end up in hell. Neither the testing means nor the mental capacity to put it to a test.
So I'd say don't be embarrased about it, feel proud that you were able to put those beliefes to an honest test. Because many adults cannot.

I don't get the sentiment of "being embarrassed" or "sobering up" from religion, but that may have to do with the fact that I don't see religion or faith as per se bad things, and that I do not feel like I was ever deceived or indoctrinated or in denial or anything like that.
From my pov, I grew into faith, as it served me well in making sense of my small childhood world. But my world didn't stay small, and with my personal growth I had outgrown faith at some point. But I couldn't pin-point when that happened, the whole process was a fluent progression - no shame or regrets or 'awakening' attached.

I joined the school paper, model UN, started watching and reading the news, etc. I started forming my own opinions...and many of those went against the politics supported by the church. I ended up trying to bend both my faith and my new beliefs and ideas to fit together, which never really worked.
At the same time, I had found a passion for learning about science and new breakthroughs in various fields. By doing this, I also started to become more scientifically literate. I couldn't say exactly when it happened, but I found myself researching athiesm and watching people like you explain the logical flaws in the Bible and the arguments for God that I grew up hearing. I was finally able to accept that the same arguments I used for pretty much everything else could be applied to religion, and that if I strongly believed that my political views should be based on facts, I had to apply the same reasoning to my faith.

I finally admitted to myself that I was an atheist about a year ago. I accepted Jesus when I was sixteen after a religious experience caused by my youth pastor manipulating my entire youth group into having a "come to Jesus" moment on a trip. I read the Bible cover to cover several times, own and had have read most of the popular apologetic books (and the atheist books they respond to). I went to a Christian high school for two years, a Christian college for a year, and wanted to become a professor of philosophy and defend the Christian faith. I evangelized to atheists, Muslims, Mormons, even Christians who didn't take the faith as seriously as I did. In my experience, the more I learned about Christianity the more questions I had. Beyond that, the more answers I sought the more burning the questions would become. Eventually, I had to deal with the idea that maybe Christianity didn't explain everything as perfectly as I thought. I really appreciate the work atheist TH-camrs like Holy Koolaid are doing to get rid of the stigma of atheism. There are friends from college I haven't spoken to in over a year because I'm afraid they'll ask me how they can pray for me or what God's been doing in my life. Christianity was my life for about four years, I ate, drank, slept, and breathed Christ (not literally, I wasn't Catholic 😁) It's honestly terrifying to tell my friends who saw me during that time that I don't believe it anymore. I almost feel as though I'm betraying them in a way. I know that's not the case, but knowledge and feelings don't always align.

@@CaptainObvious0000 Oh definitely. I didn't mention this in the post, but I grew up going to church and all, I wouldn't say I was indoctrinated, but definitely had a bias toward Christianity. When I learned how to skeptically look at the views of groups like Mormons and Muslims, I started applying the same skepticism to my own beliefs, which led to questions and so on.

Believing in the Christian God/Jesus is the only qualifier for being a "true Christian", it doesn't matter what denomination nor how hardcore you are/were. If you sincerely believed, you were.
I was raised in the typical Sunday-Christian family, not really hardcore, but I definitely believed. And feared. I'd like to monologue things I'd like/thought were funny from TV shows and movies, and if I ever got to something that seemed blasphemous, I'd hesitate and look up in an "I'm not being serious, it's not coming from me" sort of way (funnily enough I'd do the same thing with Santa).
It wasn't until 7th grade history class that my gears finally started to click. We were learning about the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians and their mythologies, and it began to dawn on me that these people believed with the same sincerity, devotion, faith, etc. The doubt grew as fewer and fewer things were adding up, but it was the fear that still gripped me. I was afraid of what would happen to me, what other people might do to me (I don't recall exactly how, but even then I was aware to some extent of the intolerance, and Hell of course). I finally put my foot down about a week before I was to be confirmed, I absolutely did not want to be labeled under a group that was raising so many flags. To this day I don't regret that decision, because it wasn't until a few years ago that I found podcasts and shows like TTA, HK, TAE, etc., which really exposed to me the extent of the harm religion actually does and just what a scam it actually is.
