  • Just how widespread is the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church? How big is the Catholic Church's scandal? The worldwide cover-up has occurred for decades, extends all the way to the top of the Vatican, and despite hollow apologies, continues to this day.

There's a corny old joke I know. A guy was once in a hotel in a cold climate where there was an ecclesiastical conference taking place. One very cold evening he wanted to sit near the fire in the lounge to warm up, but loads of priests were hogging the fireplace warmth, and he couldn't get close.
So he said in a loud voice : "I dreamt about Hell last night."
To which some priests turned and asked, " Really ? What was it like ?"
"Just like here really. You couldn't get near the fire for priests."

It's worse in the Catholic Church because you can only find salvation, God, the road to heaven etc, via a priest's good offices. They hold the keys to God's kingdom.
Ergo, they often believe themselves above the herd of plebs, or common morality for that matter. They prey ( not pray) on their parishioners' naivety, gullibility, blind faith, stupidity, take your pick, to indulge themselves. Priests, who are "poor" with few earthly possessions, by sticking close to the rich among their flock, can have a lovely life. Top of the range Audi, or VW Golf, no problem. Rolex watch, sure, why not ? They have a very high standard of poverty. There's women. A good looking young priest may be a challenge for a woman. An elderly old priest may be more challenging keeping her children away from him. But... if you want to go to heaven, you need to keep on the right side of Father O'Flaherty or whatever.
If the police finally come knocking, perhaps move Father Fingers O'Toole to another parish. Better still, another country. The Catholic Church is very big.
      The corruption is deeply ingrained.
Protestant Book Followers have another problem. They must believe that EVERY SINGLE WORD in that collection of tall tales called The Bible, is God's Word.
Evangelical preachers aren't much better. They spend the money 💰 on cocaine and hookers.

@1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV I don't know where you're from but here in the southeast united states its social (and in some VERY extreme cases actual) suicide to criticize the bible or any part of Christianity. And in the schools the teachers are constantly walking on eggshells saying things like "I'm not trying to oppose your beliefs" and "This is what I have to teach, I'm sorry if you don't agree with it". The Catholic institution is a religion, and no matter how they are protected doesn't change the fact that they are a religion being protected.

@1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV You should look into it, it happens a lot more than you think. And the people in charge of the school board being young earth creationists doesn't help much.
The problem isn't Why religion is protected, but the fact that it is. So on the issue at hand, the problem is that the Catholics are protected, we shouldn't be fighting over why.

The abhorrent theology of forgiveness of sin by a god instead of the victim is a huge portion of the problem. No one can forgive your trespasses but those you trespass against. "Forgiven" for all prior immoral acts priests think they are heaven-bound after making some boys experience living hell today.
An open practicing homosexual is denied communion by the Catholic Church. A covert homosexual pedophile priest administers communion in and is protected by the very same Catholic Church. If these are "men of God" that God is not worship worthy.

The only thing that they talk about is Homosexuals, which wasn’t in any Bible until 1946. I guess God reached down and added it. I believe the only problem with them is that they can’t reproduce . The elite need your children to fight there wars.

    • @AliciaNyblade
      @AliciaNyblade 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I agree. I'd also add that another problem with the theology is its lack of a Divine Feminine and its perverting of sex by seeing it as "sinful". Other religions have both male and female deities and view sex as a sacred thing, as something which allows humans to connect with or mirror the gods and bring life into the world. Contrast that with mainstream Christianity which has a single father god, his supposedly lifelong celibate son, and the son's perpetually virgin mother. There's something very wrong and very disturbing about that, especially when the consequences of such a theological/cosmological viewpoint manifests in the awful ways this video showed. Along with the obvious solutions of cleaning up the Church and acknowledging the victims, the mandatory vow of celibacy should be dropped (and Catholic clergy didn't always have to be celibate and unmarried, but that's a whole other story).

1, which bible passage did I mention was about the flood? I love how you're throwing the out of context card out there without even bothering to read which passages I was referring to. Maybe read those passages I mentioned and see the context for yourself.
2, I have read the bible, hence me knowing how evil parts of it is, not just the parts my minister or bible club or Christian therapist told me to read. The world might indeed be a better place if everyone read the bible fully, but only if they realised how evil it was and stopped following it.
3, The 10 commandments.... 1,2,3 are rules for people to worship a particular God, 4 isn't really actionable, 5,7,8 are actually good laws to have, so good in fact that every society ever known has them as law without the bible, 6 adultery is as bad as murder theft and perjury, do you really want to live in that kind of society? and 9 and 10 are the worst of the lot, quite ignoring the sexism of lumping them together as if a woman is just property of her husband, these commandments are not opposing theft or adultery (7 and 6) this is turning a thought into crime. Thought crime has no part in law outside of the worst dystopian futures in fiction.
4, There are plenty of religious people who good, honest and kind, the only problem with that is that them being religious negates that. At my old church there were about a dozen ladies who would give money to charity every week, they would volunteer half a day of work each week to charities and they were good people trying to do their best to do good. Unfortunately, all the money they donated, about £520 a year, each, instead of going to charity, went to the upkeep of the church and it's minister's wages, that time they donated, went into cleaning/helping the church. Just imagine how much that time and money could have helped real charities if religion did not prevent religious people from doing good.

It's always abused its weaker members and although I wasn't abused physically, our family was abused emotionally. Told to go forth and multiply and then treated with derision because we weren't wealthy enough to donate large amounts of cash. As a kid growing up in the 60s and 70s, to watch my parents panic as they struggled to find a $2 note to put in 'the envelope' because you had your name on the back. Two collections per mass. My uncle was abused by a priest. He’s never come forward, never even admitted it to his family. He wound up dropping out of college and becoming a drug addict. He did manage to get clean, get a degree, get married, and he’s lived on the straight and narrow for several decades now, but he didn’t stick around to raise his kids and he literally has zero contact with the vast majority of the family. The only time I’ve ever met him was at my little brother’s funeral, 19 years ago. My mom had no clue he was coming and she was nearly speechless when he hugged her then turned and left.
My uncle has obviously suffered deeply and still struggles with demons over it. I just hope he’s finally sought professional help in coping.
(We only know the extent of what happened because of court documents from the lawsuit filed by his 3 best friends from high school. They were all assaulted in the same way by the same priest. Obviously my uncle never stepped forward during the case, but he was identified multiple times as a 4th victim.)
ETA: It’s taken my mom a long time to come to this point, but she no longer attends church weekly, only going on major holidays and not even always then, and she has stopped all donations. I’m so damn proud of her.

Orthodox too. In no way as huge as the catholics(unless the cover up is bigger than I thought) but it exists and it's excused and covered up in the same pathetic way. I wonder now which church isn't guilty of this shit?

There’s a Catholic Church right in front of my old high school and right near a supermarket. I went there when I was in year 3 to do my first holy communion (despite the fact that I’ve always been an atheist and made it known I didn’t want to do it) and to think I could’ve been sexually abused is terrifying. I’ve been thinking about calling the police to do an investigation on the church to see is this church guilty of sexual assault, how much money is going to the Vatican? These are questions that need to be answered because until then, churches will have a limitless supply of children to abuse.

Thankfully it looks that this has only increased the rate at which the catholic church and many other rleigious communities/denominations with similar problems are bleeding paying members. It still needs to be persecuted to the utmost extend of the law and why the fuck is there a statute of limitation on ruining a person's life forever in their earliest youth? That too needs to change. No expiry on bearing the consequences for rape. Of childs or anybody else. Period.

Eh, I get the sentiment but like, you could've been sexually abused in lots of other situations that are even more terrifyingly common. Family members, teachers, etc.
The Catholic Church doesn't have a monopoly on evil shit.

I still struggle to understand how anyone can still be religious. I most definitely struggle to understand how anyone could call themselves a Catholic.
But looking at the history of sex-crimes, especially those involving children and teens, shows that even in regular civilian life it's been common to avoid or be very slow and lax on punishment in many parts of the world. If it included same-sex assaults it was often even worse.
If I'm not mistaken, which I very well may be, the serial killer known as "The Vampire of Hanover" (I think) had something like 18 charges of rape and pedophilia with young men and boys when he was finally attested and killed for the horrific murders he committed.
When you live in an extremely conservative, old-world, repressed and sick culture, like that of the churches "leadership", it's easy to see how and why they are the way that they are. I just can't understand why anyone in the congregations around the world refuse to leave. It is indeed a pedophile syndicate that should be dismantled as soon as humanly possible.

There was a guy who raped and killed over a hundred young boys across 3 countries, he was brought to “justice” and now is a pastor in his penitentiary, the irony! There’s no dead penalty so he lives on unlike the children he tortured and murdered!

I'm not religious. I never was but I guess I considered myself a Christian. That's the only religion I was ever exposed to but then my daughter converted to Islam @Muslim Brooklyn
I knew the bible didn't make sense. I knew it was full of inconsistencies and contradictions and errors. I started reading the Quran. I knew right away that it was the same BS. I started watching Christian debates. Christian vs. Islam debates and found @Holy Kool aid..... I realized really quick that all religion is man made for power, control and money. I guess now I'm agnostic but I'm only seeing recently how toxic and abusive religion is. I live in the bible belt. In Arkansas. Church on every street. Homeless people on every street. Churches don't pay taxes because they are supposed to be charities. Who do they help? I've watched documentaries on every religion. It's outrageous. It's like Nostradamus. His prophecies can be twisted into anything. Same as the bible. You can twist scripture into anything.

I live in a small town in Indiana. My childhood priest, father Dave Fleck, is now being investigated under “a claim of abuse from decades ago”. This is the man who we trusted. The investigation isn’t over yet so we don’t know for sure but the priest that used to work along side him was suspended because of child porn. I’m so glad I got out of that church but they work with a school.

Thank you for talking about this. I shared this in all my social media accounts. I usually never share any media that criticizes the catholic church where my family can see it, but in this case it would be extremely disrespectful to these victims if I cared more about what my family would think of me than in sharing their heartbreaking stories.

This may sound crude, but I know for a fact that if anything like that had happened to my brother or sister and someone got away with it because of something like this church cover up garbage, the perpetrator would not ever walk properly again if he could at all. Kneecaps. I would have no qualms about it. And I really just don't understand. If prosecution does not work because of corruption and cover-up then I believe it's totally valid to become the punisher. To hell with forgiveness, these people destroying lives and getting away with it and being smug about it? No way

As an 84 year old ex-Catholic, I distinctly remember running to confession to confess "touching myself."
In the dark confessional the priest listened earnestly and quietly as I was encouraged to go into detail about my youthful flights of infamy.
I was one of the lucky ones who had strict Catholic parents and my father would have "kicked a priest in the nuts" if he had molested one of his kids.
Unfortunately, too many Catholics have nothing but fear about their spiritual life and a real belief in hell to come to the realization that a priest is just a human person
who chose to run from the world and hide under the "apron" of the Catholic Church.
Yes, it is really a cult, but because there are so many Catholics who are easily comforted by "empty promises", the Church goes on and on.
Meanwhile its members sit in their pews with their intelligence turned off with the conviction that they are earning their way to "heaven."

The problem of evil is hard enough for believers to explain away, but when it's the very church that is the source of evil must make those justifications especially difficult. But let's not be naive, the Catholic church has a known, millenia-long history of many other evils. This series should not surprise anyone.

I stand behind the Irish gentleman's testimony, for I was beaten in this fashion, too. The church was big on corporal punishment in those days. There were those who used this doctrine as a form of sexual release. It was about this time that I stopped drinking the Holy Koolaid. Nary a drop since.

This is a simple question of money. Paying billions of dollars is no trouble at all for the Catholic Church, so the very few cases of justice have not caused any pain or grievance to the Church hierarchies. The "product" of this organization, the sale of places in heaven, is almost as profitable while paying a few fines than when there are no fines. And when the priests get no punishment in civil or criminal courts, the rest is business as usual.

When I was a teenage boy growing up in the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston I was never physically abused but they always told us that just thinking about sex was a mortal sin. But what teenager doesn't think about sex? This created a huge conflict within me as I struggled between my religious beliefs and my emerging natural urges. This conflict scarred me phytologically and it interfered with my ability to form normal loving relationships with women. And now I find out that these same people who were telling me that just thinking about sex was a sin were at the same time having illicit sexual relations with children. How despicable is that? It fills me with absolute rage.

The man's speech at 7:20 brought me to tears; an increasingly rare experience for me as I age. The willful proliferation of these injustices, and the measures taken by the religious devout to conceal its depravity, are so disgusting it literally makes my skin crawl. And while the rational part of me accepts that I can't label all Catholics as immoral due to the actions of only a few, it does nevertheless demonstrate that their doctrine is a breeding ground for immoral thought.
It should be our imperative to expose the harm their doctrine fosters and be forever critical and relentless in our skepticism of their motives and actions.
