- In the last episode, we put on some drag reducing, body widening parts. In this episode, we're going to make better use of those parts and add MORE DOWNFORCE. I'm maximizing the rulebook for my time attack class to produce as much downforce as possible on my little civic.

Gears & Gasoline videos are just soo satisfying to watch
Very good production quality, basically movie standards
Never a bad episode honestly.
agreed
tell me about it.
So calming
Give the editor a raise. Each of these videos I watch I'm always blown away with the subtle syncing of cuts/actions to the music.
They edit themselves mostly I believe with one employee.
So Ben should give Ben a raise?
@@bonda_racing3579 Ben pays Ben and Ben pays Ben, so Ben’s Ben should give Ben’s Ben a raise yes.
@@Ed-qr7kz Ben is the best host and editor on G&G by far
@@DAAN_MUSIC i prefer Ben but Ben is also decent
Ben: we need more weight
Also Ben: I got a super light carbon fiber hood and mirrors
Edit: Yes. I did hear why he took weight off the hood so he could add more to lower parts of the car
I'm a walking contradiction.
He can put a higher % of the total weight under his seat to meet class rules, I would do the same.
Lol

Don't you hate it when you get absolutely gapped on the track in your new Porsche by a clapped out 90s civic
running wooden aero
With Porsche brakes as well
🤣
Gapping 'Vettes too
@@angry_mxrcy9877 he's basically a 911 at this point
I would agree but this thing is far from clapped
That’s 13 minutes of my life well spent.
What about those 9 seconds
yeah I learned quite a lot from this and will apply it to my Fiesta ST front splitter project.
well i enjoyed the 9 seconds aswell
I wasn't expecting a full on lesson on how areo works but im glad I did.
Oh the satisfaction to see how this civic progresses🌹

I don’t know why but I just love how this thing looks. Can’t wait to see it race!
From a Type R copy for under $5000 to a Track monster! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I was about to comment about the splitter being wood, then I remembered you're like 100 pound light for your class XD
I’m still saving up for my fun car. I’m almost there but until then I’m stuck with a boring Altima and your videos to keep me inspired
@Grant definitely plan on doing work myself. That’s half the fun. I just need to move out of this apartment and get a place with a garage so I can do that 🤙🏽
Search Craigslist cars or auto parts everyday. Eventually you’ll come across a decently clean vehicle for the low. I picked up a clean civic for $300 it needed a trans but I found one for $60...
Good luck 👍🏽
Im saving to k swap my del sol so i know how you feel good luck youll get there eventually itll be worth it

Greetings from Greece! Keep up the great work guys!
Its like a therapy for me to watch you guys every Saturday
waiting for the Luke's 240SX continuation.
G&G could film grass growing and edit it into a great video. Well done as always guys.
I've literally made it a routine every week to go get sushi, sit in my car, eat and watch G&G... Expensive, but worth it.
My job buys us lunch around noon every Saturday. I share a very similar ritual
Fr I legit just ate sushi
I thought leave the skirts black after the last episode but now looking at it more I think painting the side skirts white is the way to go. Another epic video boys!
I skipped through all my TH-cam “journalist” videos to watch this one. You might not believe this in yourself, but your videos have become truly interesting to real automotive fans. Keep up the great work!
Back in the early 90s, the local performance shop had a Spoon engine and offered it up to complete my 98 Civic Hatch build... If I can only go back in time :-(. ....at the time, no one here in North America thought a front drive could be a real race car and I didn't realize I'd never own another car with that level of handling.
You know somebody is well versed on a topic when they can simplify a complex topic like aero into a simple picture. Mike is certainly an expert at what he does.
The look of the Honda Civic hatchback transformation looks phenomenal. I like how it turned out.
This video is very underrated for the tips & shots on how to build splitters. This was the catalyst for me starting my splitter build. Thanks guys 🙏🏾
Didn’t think to cut the bumper opening before paint. The little things make all the difference, otherwise don’t bother even painting.
@@svgPhoenix I personally wouldn’t have bothered painting those parts, but he can do what he likes. About the rest, how does one convey an idea here without commenting? How much easier is it for people to learn and get better with outside input? Then imagine a world where you couldn’t give or take advice, that has some George Orwell vibes. Constructive criticism is real, as is learning and education. Seriously no offence, and no offence to you too. Everyone is wound so tight with being PC when it’s just conversation. I guarantee somebody has mentioned the cutting bumper before paint to him in conversation. Happy Easter!(Apologize in advance if Easter offends anyone in the comments)
My favorite civic build ever.
Best automotive channel on TH-cam.
Advance Auto Parts, please sponsor this channel!
Very good and simple aero package. The only thing I'd add is actually tape where the air dam meets the splitter. If there is even the smallest of gaps there the air flows thru it and lowers the pressure slightly over the splitter (also added drag). If you need more rear downforce but just a bit, not a big chunk, look into putting bigger endplates on your wing and a gurney flap, it'll make a noticeable different for very little money.
What a cliffhanger! Keeping us in suspense seems to be what Ben&Ben do best
My favourite build on the TH-cam platform. This was liberating and life changing. I can’t even describe how much I’ve enjoyed this series. Incredible work gentlemen. Here’s to many more!
Just so you know, drill bits can be re purposed and with a grinder and steady hands can be sharpened. We used to do this at the machine shop top avoid buying drill bits when they go dull.
The quality of this content is insane. It's like Saturday morning cartoons.
While I'd probably look into blacking out the molded bumper opening around the radiator ducting, just for style, the little thing looks like a weapon now. And from the driving footage, sure seems like it is. Love it.
I love aerodynamic. I think the next thing is a clean flat floor like “f1” to minimized turbulence and a functional diffuser to channel the air for a tighter / clean package. Like most hatch, the area between the glass and near bumper generates a lot of weird vortices, so cleaning that would be the last thing I would do. As a engineer, the hardest thing is ‘side skirt” and keeping air on the bottom package as smooth as possible. If you want to go a bit further, you can find the cheapest way to scan your car as a model and run basic fluid dynamics simulation on any modern 3D software. It’s a lot cheaper than a wind tunnel. Good luck!
You don't even know how bad I want a EK style Civic because of this series. Keep up the awesome job guys!
I find the ducting interesting...
Hello Ben, just a tip. I would recomend to put some kind of net or even a executive shock in the intake of the radiator.
If you don't, then the radiator is going to be destroyed by the gravel of the cars in front. I say this by experience.
Nice content and keep going
Where are you going to vent the hot air from the radiator, Ben?
How many Tshirts would I have to buy to get a video every 3-4 day's 🤔
Love the content.
Man I love this channel. Between gears and gasoline and Donut media, my car itches are throughly scratched.
Thanks so much for the amazing video quality in all of your videos, much love from Kansas.
I’m a huge fan of F1 and just finished Adrian Newey’s How to Build a Car book. All this talk about aero is exciting to watch. Awesome content.
Try a gurney flap on that wing if you need more rear downforce. Can add downforce without too much drag. That’s how the 917k’s worked so well! Love the car keep it up!
Was never a fan of your older videos. It felt weird and something was off, but these newer videos are amazing. I'm excited for every release so far, watching the miatas and the honda is great.
Honestly, watching these videos inspires me to rebuild my integra for track. I have started ordering parts for this season and I'm super excited to see what my car can do.
Great job on the aero bits. I'm sure Mike has mentioned this to you but you will also need a vent/heat extractor on the hood. It not only reduces under hood temperature but also let's out the air coming in from the radiator vent and reduce lift. If the class you are competing in doesn't allow it then ignore my advise.
Loved that reverse tracking shot @ 7:23
This car is so nicely built. The lines are so good.
Changes to the powertrain.... EXCITING!
These Saturday morning uploads are what I watch as a 40yo instead of Saturday morning cartoons. Keep up the good work!
Probably 1 of my favorite EK build on TH-cam.
So stoked on the Progress!! Can't wait to see both Bens on track.
My favorite channel on youtube
Progresssss!!!! Yesss!!!
It'll be in unlimited Class next year (I hope). Let's make it come true Ben! 😁👍
Watching their videos actually gives me ideas to make my car better
Downforce is such a 'SCIENCE'!!...i think it's 'Out Of My Budget'..but would Love a K24 Civic...for The Street!!
I always look forward to watching these on the weekends!
I think painting the recess in the bumper black would look better and make the smaller opening blend in, though I appreciate this car is going to be more about function than form.
Yeah, I was thinking about doing that.. hmm..
@@GearsandGasoline I did a quick Photoshop of it, but unfortunately TH-cam won't let me post a link. The upper and lower recesses look better black for sure.
Honestly, i love the videos you post and honestly i wait for it to drop all the time . Love all the changes and performance in the car.
This is my new favorite channel ! I feel this racing life through your videos its purely genius to me ! Love it
Ben! Have you tried adding a gurney flap to the rear wing? Since downforce balance is really close this might be what youre looking for and it doesn't add too much drag as opposed to a bigger wing!👍
Seeing this car evolve is amazing.
@10:30 carbon fiber is not brittle. The principal stresses in tension are greater than in compression. CF is not a ceramic, CF is material that peels, crack and debond easier on the direction perpendicular to the fiber.
I’m surprised someone hasn’t said ‘Why do you need a big wing on a civic. It’s front wheel drive’
So glad you made a video on this! I sent a dm asking about the build, the video answered my questions!
“I’m still under weight”.....installs carbon bits LOL! Love this series, wish it was more often!
This car keeps getting better and better! Well done Ben! 👏
match of the century guys!
Ben VTEC sound vs James VTEC sounds
She's looking serious! I would think the smaller frontal area of the mirrors would bring a bit of a benefit, although not a big one. Every little bit though!
That carbon really changed the look of the car, I love it
On the weekends, I go out for bike rides, relax, hang out with my fiancée and watch this Gears and Gasoline’s new videos.
Love how he sneaked in that last shot overtaking a corvette.
Love your videos and approach, this Civic has come a long way. I look forwards to seeing how you get on in competition
Damn, you guys never run out of ideas and parts 🔥🔥
Definitely one of my top five favorite channels right now!!
Might have been mentioned before, but it might be worth ducting the back of the radiator out of the bonnet, it's all good getting air in... but if it can't get out properly it might slow the flow too much. I've been watching race teams build ducting and its a bigger job than it seems in all honesty.
Things shaping up to look like a proper time attack car, awesome!
I love your videos man! and I cannot agree more with the direction that you are going with your civic. I met you once at gridlife midwest before covid hit. keep it real man!
Some of the best quality videos on TH-cam.
hes gonna go with a supercharger kit im calling it now. only makes sense. probably hit 350-400whp with a decent kit on 8lbs and still have near instant power coming out of corners.
Now looks like real track machine. Props!
This thing has turned out so damn good! It looks amazing!
The journey this little civic has made is amazing and inspiring. Usually after they are built to af decent road spec they soon get sold and broken for parts, I'm glad this one evolved into a functional beast. Looking forward to the power train upgrades. I'm hoping for a Super charger or some nasty meth fuel system
Imagine driving a porsche on a track and waving a Honda Civic past you...
Porsches are surprisingly bad at the track because they are no where near setup enough to be competitive you need to get new suspension, drop it closer to the ground , make the coilovers stiff af you need strut braces and chassis stiffeners and you should probably run a smaller rim size for the track all they have is speed and they’re only setup for being a straight line car a beginner would possibly be faster in a Honda Civic then a Porsche if the civic is modified because they’re usually more used to a fwd car
You guys are focused on the Porsche and it makes you all sound bitter, but he passed other cars that are running track setups and he was gapping a Camari that also looked like it was running somewhat of a track build.
I met a guy on a particular German race track ( I heard it's really famous ) who had a 400hp turbo civic. My god that thing was fast. I was in a minivan so every car just overtakes me but that Civic flies by as fast as GT3RS and any other supercars.
Doesn't sound as good as a Porsche N/A Flat 6 tho.
Put the same driver and purpose behind both cars and the Porsche isn't getting beat. Period.
@@Andrew-hh3ol what are you talking about? Porsche’s are probably the best out of the box track cars you can get. There’s a reason caymans and 911s win almost every group test they are in.
And GT Porsche’s are literally made to be tracked.
And finally any race car will be better than a road car. That’s just common sense.
Watching this man slowly go down the modification deep dark rabbit hole.
Loving the evolution of the hatch over the years. You guys are killing it the last few years. Hope to catch you guys in Williamsburg some day! If you see a clean gray TSX with a bunch of Euro R parts say hi!
Sponsorship is the Key
You’re gonna need a flat floor with Venturi tunnel and a diffuser. Then seal the pressure with movable ceramic side skirts. Aero is complicated and can’t be done piecemeal. This is how “ground effect” was done 8n formula one in the good ol days
G&G videos always drop at night here, what a cool way to end the day!
Ben!!! You should paint the front bumper holes black to simulate it being cut out without it being cut out
That civic already comes a loong waay! I remember you drivin it into canada and all other places on the roadtrip. She's a big girl now!
The Honda that could it's amazing how much the Honda has changed.
Best high quality videos on this platform such a nice build so awesome we get to follow the build at first I didn’t know splitters were made from wood
Totally crazy! Keep going Ben its awesome for us to watch. High quality build.
Was cool to meet you while I was working the false grid over at VIR! Love the videos man
i love how you added weight with that carbon fiber bonnet and mirrors
mia is looking goooooood😍😍
To think that this car went from a cheap reliable Honda civic Type R replica to a full blown time-attack car.
The wing looks kinda funny on a hatchback.
Definitely something to get used to seeing lol
The cutting tool used on your bumper opening did a better VTEC impression! 😅
This is inspiring me to finish school ASAP so I can build a race car myself. Love these videos ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Would it make sense to go with a rear diffuser over a larger wing? I'm no aerodynamicist, and I don't know if it would be class legal, but seems like it would be a good way to add weight down low, utilize the low pressure zone created by that splitter, and not increase drag as much as a larger rear wing would. Would also look mean AF. Love what you're doing with Mia!
I’ve seen the professional awesome evo in the flesh. It’s amazing
