And it sometimes shows how. Though, admittedly, not very well at all. The Vulcans have honestly done a lot of damage. Writing characters and insisting logic is their shtick...but then never once having them be actually logical, is just...a serious fucking problem.
That and a scene with Janeway and Tuvok where Janeway comments that the power and flaw of logic is that you can use it to justify anything... Which, is very literally not true. It's like claiming you can use math to get any answer you want from any problem that exists. It just does not operate that way, at all. If it does, then you've very obviously done something completely wrong. If 2+2=5...you've fucked up, severely and obviously.
Asking someone to "think" without teaching them the procedure for doing so...is really just asking someone to bullshit themselves into believing whatever they want...or whatever someone else has subtly convinced them they want.

Exactly, we never saw his funeral. Seven actually injected him with Nanites trying to save him but preserving him. Later, he wakes up to Dr. Bashir, who recruits him into Section 31, publicly acknowledged as dead. He struggles to deal with the fact he has Borg Nanites in him, and eventually get re-discovered by main cast, as their missions intertwine. After saving the day in some capacity, he gets re-enlisted back into Star Fleet, and gets to work on repairing ships at the Museum Space Station with Geordi. Sound Goods.

  • @robcarley7506
    @robcarley7506 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

I will summarize my thoughts for an easier read.
    - I think Todd deserves to bring Shaw back as he did a fantastic job with the character and I think one way to honour the character without making him Captain of the ship, and I have said this before elsewhere, is to make him "Captain of Engineering" aboard the Enterprise G. He would hold a position only one other character that we know of has e.g. Scotty.
    - Todd mentions keeping aspects of the character true, and I think one way is to keep the subtle clash between Shaw and Seven. Under his brash deminer toward Seven, he does appreciate her talents. It would show from time to time.
    - Exploring his past could be done, starting an episode of doing so as a flashback of him at Wolf 359. A flashback done similarly like Picard's was in First Contact. Flash back, disaster and destruction, and then the camera pulling away from those reflections in Shaw's eye. Showing that they still haunt him.
    - One way to bring him back is Q creates a time remnant (flash reference) just before the phaser blast hits. Possibly starting as a lesson for Jack Crusher, but Jack makes a case toward the end of the episode and allows Shaw to remain, as Q was going to merge him with the remnant again. Just one idea.
    - overall, we the fans need Legacy, and personally I would like to see Shaw comeback.

@@WilliamDeLong-ky3zi As far as I know, we don't have an emergency engineer hologram. Problem is, Shaw never came across as a miracle worker. Another reason is there are probably some parts of engineering which could mess up the hologram matrix due to the energies involved.

What I liked about Shaw was how he reflected all those vets that came out of their war and had that, "why did I make it through" and that hatred for the opponent, many times racial, they fought against.
There were WW2 vets that came out of it absolutely hating Japanese people. It took years and decades to de-condition themselves from that mentality. I think Shaw reflected that PTSD mentality.
And like how Star Trek tries to be positive, Shaw shows PTSD isn't hopeless.

Great hearing his thoughts on the franchise. Two things stuck out to me. First, talking about how people don't have to like all Trek. Glad someone said it. Seen so many fans act like you're not a "real Trekkie" or something if you don't like all (especially the new) series. Second, and maybe more importantly, how he mentions the quote about how Trek, at its best, doesn't tell you what to think. It asks you what to think. This idea is the main thing that turned me off from Discovery and season 2 of Picard. To me (and of course all of this is subjective) those were very much about telling the audience what positions they needed to have on social issues and came across with having a sense of absolute moral superiority. For me, SNW reversed course on this and almost felt like it intentionally made Pike an open minded captain that was extremely open to other points of view. I think if future Trek can go back to asking people to think, it can reunify a good chunk of the fanbase.

Handwaving here - when Seven was saying goodbye to Shaw, she introduced her last nanoprobes. He regenerates slowly, somehow. Maybe they have to break him out of Daystrom Station or something. He's changed, doesn't want to be a captain any longer. Wants to explore part of himself. So many opportunities. Also, opens up Seven having to realize she has no more connection to the hive or something to explore for a season or something. Better writers than me can flesh that all out. Or completely ignore it. ;)

Delighted to see that Mr. Stashwick has some substantial nerd cred alongside being a talented actor and charming interviewee.
As for the lingering question of how Shaw could come back in Legacy, I have touted an idea under a few relevant TH-cam videos in the past, and I may as well do the same here. It's quite simple really: what if Legacy began by showing us that, in desperation, Seven tried to stick him full of nanoprobes to bring him back a la Neelix in the Voyager episode "Mortal Coil" (maybe AFTER the Borg crisis had ended, since who knows what might have happened if she tried DURING the crisis, and Neelix had been dead for nineteen hours by the time she tried it on him)? Perhaps human physiology isn't quite as... adaptable as Talaxian, though, and it SEEMS to fail at first, and his body is shipped off to Starfleet Medical afterward and Seven and everyone else assume the worst.
Fast Forward to maybe the end of Star Trek: Legacy's first episode, wherein Captain Seven of Nine has saved the day, but in a cowboy cop non-Starfleet-approved sort of way. The Admiralty still want her to be a captain, as all of the recent various crises of the last few decades have left Starfleet in need of all the officers they can put rank pips on, and by the 25th Century even the most hard-nosed of Starfleet Admirals can see there is a place in the fleet for more rule-bending captains of the Kirk wheelhouse. However, they do decide to temporarily assign one of their own to The Enterprise G in a strictly observational and advisory capacity. Well, who else would make more sense to send than recently promoted Commodore Liam Shaw? That big reveal can end the first episode.
The second episode can explain that the nanoprobes did successfully revive him from being straight-up dead. They simply had taken significantly longer to repair a human than Neelix. Possible reasons Seven didn't hear about it could be as elaborate as Shaw working with Section 31 since then and his resurrection resultantly being kept classified at first, or maybe as simple as The Enterprise G being too far from the heart of Starfleet to have gotten the news in a timely manner.
As for Shaw himself, well he could quite believably be upset about the circumstances of his return and could easily hold it against Seven for carrying it out when he seemed pretty at peace with dying when it happened (and maybe the process of very slowly being brought back from the dead was... not pleasant). Also the sheer oddity of having not only improbably survived his first encounter with The Borg only to be killed by them decades later, only to then be brought back by their technology not long after would not be lost on him and would probably be the source of some... character stuff. Y'know? Also, it could well be that his body still isn't in ship shape after being reanimated, and that could make for some... stuff happening. Y'know? Possibly the nanoprobes are still working on his body and he can get better as the season goes on. Maybe, like Neelix, he still needs to periodically be injected with nanoprobes to keep himself going, much to his own angst.
Shaw and Seven's arc would involve navigating this adversarial yet still respectful relationship where they have this weird and conflict-filled history, yet they do see the value in each other. It's entirely likely that Shaw could understand exactly WHY Seven decided to try to keep him from dying for both utilitarian (again, shortage of officers) and personal reasons, but it's so far from what he would have wanted that he still holds it against her. And of course from Seven's perspective the man is still one part nurturing and like nine parts asshole, and he's still here shadowing her even now that she's in command.
Ultimately, by season's end, Shaw's assignment concludes and the Admirals are happy enough with Captain Seven, but maybe some figurative sort of door is left open to keep Shaw in the picture as long as Stashwick wants to stay on.
Anyway, that's all I've got. If you managed to read all the way, I thank you for doing so.
And Terry Matalas, if you're reading this, call me? I'm looking for work! 😆 Heh, I won't hold my breath.

Here's a great way to get Todd back on a Legacy Trek show, even though he's dead -- y'all recall how, in Picard's first season, Rios had let the ship program all of its emergency holograms as various versions of himself? Well, in 2401, every Starfleet ship has emergency holograms, right? And Shaw is, among other things, someone who, to put it nicely, likes the sound of his own voice, right? So, it can turn out that every emergency hologram on the Enterprise-G is a Holo-Shaw of one stripe or another. From the EMH to the EEH to the ECH, they're all various faces of Liam Shaw. Todd could have a LOT of fun playing with that...

Love that Ellie and Sean both had the same look I did when Todd said "Its cold, its 58 degrees." Can see in real time "Fifty eight fucking degrees?! That's boilin-... wait Americans use Fahrenheit."

Get Captain Seven to find Shaw as a drone in a Borg wreckage. They assimilated Shaw while in control of most of the Titan and sent him to a nearby cube. Seven can help Shaw transition back to being fully human.

I must beg for forgiveness, I have no idea who is "Todd" is, before I watched Picard, and of course, watching the first few episodes he comes across as a perfect 'antagonist/a-hole'.
Man, am I glad he was casted and gave us his performance.

Todd Stashwick did an excellent job making me hate and like a character at the same time. That's not easy to do..

If they bring back Shaw, it puts Seven in a tough spot.
I think she should just be incredibly curious about him, as well as unsure of herself as captain, so she reads/listens to his logs a lot, so we get Stashwick in voice-over or even in flashbacks.

They could pull a Georgiou and bring mirror Shaw from the mirror universe to the Prime universe. It would be fun to see a darker version of Shaw.

Best way to bring him back. Season 1 finally of Legacy, have Seven in trouble and have Shaw show up as an admiral to help rescue the enterprise. Maybe he is the captain of a prototype ship and he is in another Golem like Picard. Make it So!

Heres a pitch. Have a story about Shaw and Wolf 359 ala Titanic meets The impossible. With Murphys Law in full effect. Also displaying his will to survive and his ability to see him as an everyman first officer, much like Billy Riker. With that note, have J.Frakes direct the legacy episode as a one-off.
    You're welcome.

I rather enjoyed this interview. He made Captain Shaw so believable. Sisko had a similar chip on his shoulders and did quite well. It does make sense for Legacy not being done quite yet especially since Paramount is cutting back on the Trek shows or allowing others to pick them up. If we would see Legacy, it probably be 2-3 years depending on financing.
