I doubt The earl of Sandwich was the first person in the world and history to think of bread with a filling. I guess in Europe and for the name it was him, but in other places in the world and in history, there must have been others before him that did this

Made it famous. You are probably right. Most likely took the idea from someone else and took credit. Which happened a lot.
