@Jake Jutras, You do, but they might as well not be there compared to your Russian allies in the excellent 2007 original. Someone on the dev/writing team hates Russia.
@Julian Reviews, I played through the whole campaign. Minor Spoiler, their not rogue, Russia doesn't even disown Barkov until hes killed. Even Price says something completely out of his past character that Russia deserves terrorist attacks. The devs/writers utterly fail to deliver a morally grey conflict.
the main reason the nuke scene was so impactful, was because they correctly betted that their main audience were taking everything at face value. Also we shouldn't discount the fact that a lot of younger people were playing and young people aren't exactly known for observing subtle details especially in an era where games were seen by most as entertainment and having a good story was usually luck not intention
Modern Warfare was the first game to push the series to an M rating, and it really shows with its heavy subject matter. My parents did not let me play it until much later, but I remember sneaking upstairs to my cousin's XBox - seeing the Crew Expendable mission at the young age of 10 and was COMPLETELY enthralled. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I am very glad I did not play it at that age, as I would not have been able to grasp the subtleties and implications of the story.

played this with a friend right after we had gotten back from Iraq. finished my first playthrough in 6 hrs straight through. so many scenes stand out for me: that nuke scene completely caught me off guard. I was in awe and completely surprised that a game would go there. the AC-130 scene was eerie in it's accuracy; I had seen actual video of real-life missions while in Iraq. hell, an ac-130 mission had happened in my sector and one of our platoons had to go out and survey the aftermath. shit was very realistic when I first played it. all that to say, this game holds a special place in my heart and if I had go on the campaign, it's clearly anti-war for which I'm glad it is.

Raven Software dev (Sr. Sound Designer) here. I'm really happy that you called out the sound design and mix overhaul in MWR. I wasn't at Raven yet at the time MWR was being worked on but Andy Bayless, Mark Kilborn and the other sound designers who worked on MWR did an amazing job. They managed to revitalize the sound of this game while maintaining a lot of the original character and I know they put in a TON of work, effort, and long hours to achieve that goal.
Appreciate yours and everyone else's hard work on the remaster COD4 and MW2 campaign. COD4 especially since it was my first shooter so seeing it with the fidelity and spectacle of modern hardware, but still retaining that early 7th generation console game structure was a real treat.
yo it actually is a good day today, for me at least, I got a 92 out of 100 on a microeconomics exam and that’s a huge comeback going from a 51 and 24 to a 92, looks like I got a chance to pass my class :D
I played the Wii version of this like 8 years ago, and I remember replaying the AC-130 mission over and over again because of how fun it was. Last year, the remastered version was free for PS+, so I downloaded it and played it all again... only to feel genuinely disturbed by Death From Above. You can watch enemies panic and try to take cover in vain, and the only separation between good guys and bad guys is “blinky guys good, not-blinky guys bad.” Everyone looks the same and it makes you feel the absurdity of war and American intervention.
That mission was baller as fuck when I was 10, and it's baller as fuck still now. Maybe I'm just mentally ill but the thump of that 40mm and watching the rounds flying never gets old
i was like 12 yo old when i played that mission for the first time. and for some reason this mission kinda scarred me a and made my 12yo brain feel uncomfortable. by that time i'd played cod5 and cod6 beforehand i played 4 , but instead of the brutality of 5 nor the airport mission of cod6, nor the gunn*ng down or meleeing bad guys in missions, this one where i just hunt white blinks from a failsafe distance through a lens is the one that made me the most uncomfortable for some reason
I played CoD4 on release when I was 17. The aerial bombardment mission for me was arcade-y and didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all. It was simply a "shoot the thing on the screen" mission. Replaying it at 29 years old it definitely does make me feel a bit uncomfortable as it perfectly captures how impersonal war can get. In a world where drone strikes controlled by UAV pilots half a world away are commonplace, I can't help but wonder about the impact such things has on the psychology of those pilots. The knowledge that that's a real person, but it's not an immediate kill or be killed situation.
Thinking about it, it has to mess with your mind. In a regular gun fight you can say "it's me or him" real easy, but as you said, being so far above or far away, with such an incredible advantage of power, with such a functional look in which you can't almost distinguish people from mere dots on a screen. The idea of being a cold, efficient murderer must get to you
@@Axl4325 you guys are looking at it wholly wrong, these guys usually exist to support troops. Think about it, say there's a whole platoon of enemies about to destroy a fob with at most 10 guys, and an ac-130 circling around. I've first played this game in 2010 I think, so I propably was 16 at the time. Guess what 2010 happened? Chelsea (former Bradley) Manning leaked "collateral Murder" to Wikileaks and man, that was huge. I know, there were actual goals in this mission, and of course, those were totally 110% only bad guys, for sure, and of course, the devs couldn't have known it, since it happened in 2007 and got leaked in 2010, but MAN, as I played it, it kinda felt like I was replaying the casual murder streak the US Military was doing back then. And just by playing war crimes (altough they weren't in the game), I got some strong anti war vibes from playing it. As far as stress and all goes.... Seems like most soldiers for some reason don't have a huge problem with killing people. It kinda is their job, and the Enemy is just that - the enemy - completely dehumanised, barely more then a (dangerous) moving target out of cardboard at the shooting range. Wich is made also very clear by seing collateral murder - just casually killing civilians, like it was some fun leisure activity for the whole family to enjoy.
@@sagichdirdochnicht4653 They were in the middle of a battle where troops were in contact. They weren't just casually murdering random people indiscriminately. It's crazy, I never had the notification for this video being uploaded... damn TH-cam! Got to say Raycevick, your one of my go-to content uploaders. Positive, good quality and not cut and paste content... it's top-notch. Why am I commenting on this one? Few reasons. COD4 is VERY special to me. At the time of its release, I was in the army myself (British). It was the first MP game I really got into even though I had been a fan of COD since the first title. When this one released it was like a perfect storm. Long story short, I got into it so much I started a clan (CRIIIIINGE). I had a bunch of disposable income, being in the army at the time it would have only been spent on beer, hookers, or adventures to (mostly) legally blow things up. So I started a dedicated server, the best money could buy. It became one of the top 3 PC based servers in the world, constantly full and the team grew huge. Being one of the last dedicated server games going (WAW was too broken on MP to populate) it was popular for years, in fact to this day, the team (/Clan (CRIIIIINGE)) is still going and considering how old it is, still manages to keep populated, although I have nothing to do with it now, so can't take credit. I did the Promod and custom servers too, ran pretty much all of those mods you showed, plus many more,. I could talk for days on what was possible and not, it was amazing to have a player base and technology for an entire community to do whatever we wanted for a giggle. Now with the P2P MP stuff, loot drops and "skins" etc, I just cant do COD anymore. It lost the whole community thing that made that game so special with dedicated servers. Logging onto a 54 player server and know 40 of them as if they was all your personal friends with a few randos thrown in to make it interesting. But its all gone now... boooooooo! Well, just wanna put it out there mate. I know what it's like on the other side of the YT thing and I know exactly what you're talking about in the last 5 mins of the vid. Sorry, this such a late comment, but hey... that's YT for ya! I have always wanted to do something with a dedicated server in a modern setup. Try to get some of that community things back. Having a YT presence is one of the few times it makes it possible. Having an entire community the chance to come together and play a classic together... however you want... would be interesting what could be done. Anyways, enough of the rambles mate, cheers for the upload, all the best and hope to see if I missed any more gems. Cheers!
I was on those cringe servers. Ill never forget. I miss "codjumper" "zombies" "promod" I MISS IT ALL I CAN CRY RIGHT NOW I HAD SO MANY GOOD FRIENDS ON THOSE SERVERS AMD SOME TILL THIS DAY I HAVE ON FACEBOOK BUT WE DONT TALK ANYMORE.
World at War is a weird one for me. It's even more derivative than most of the other entries, re-using old Enemy at the Gates shticks and basing the entire US campaign on The Pacific, like they did with Band of Brothers for the first CoD, but it's also one of the most satisfying. For me, that's PEAK CoD multiplayer. I remember grinding for hours trying to get a scope for my Mosin.
@@fuzzydunlop7928 You wanna laugh? The Pacific came out in 2009. World at War was 2008. Although the Peleliu episodes of the show feel blatantly like those campaign missions to a degree where I'd assume it was the other way around
33:54 The mission is called "Charlie Don't Surf" as well. I just rewatched Apocalypse Now and the correlation is pretty stunning considering the opening invasion of the choppers.
Never played WAW on veteran, but damn original black ops was also pure hell. One mission were you had to storm down a hill in vietnam, literally felt like it was impossible. As soon as you poked your head over something you'd get lazered.

Once you die enough, you accept death and get better because of it - I still play HC SnD to this day on CoD4 & honestly it is therapeutic, knowing the opening nade spots, the rush routes etc. I am one with the game at this point, I embrace my inner autist.

Editing is still as phenomenal as always, Ray (Every time you seamlessly do transitions like from FNG to Crew Expendable or going from Call of Duty 4 to 2 will never cease to amaze). And it pairs incredibly well with your "How Call of Duty Lost Its Identity" video. I also wasn't expecting to get a retrospective look at the previous games as well. Despite the lack of pre-production history on Modern Warfare itself, learning about IW's past felt like a natural lead in to it. Keep up the phenomenal work. It's always a pleasant surprise seeing your videos hit my subscription box.
I know this is super late to recommend at this point but we need a “Fall of Duty: how Activision’s greed and corruption destroyed a franchise” now that would be quite a treat Also, this video was fantastic! CoD4 is easily one of my favorite shooters to this day because of how well it nailed its wartime atmosphere and gameplay!
Yeah, personally they really have gone off the reservation with their MW remakes (revisions are more like it), I used to see the remasters for the original trilogy on Playstation store, now you can't find them, so you can't be able to find out what the original trilogy was like if ya didn't get to play it (granted MW3 was an over bloated sack compared to the first two, but was still better than the revisions), yeah I know what ya mean.
If you think that's a revelation, wait till you remember the freaking JAVELIN that just... Sits there, ready for you to pick up, up some stairs a bit left of the entrance to this particular encounter.
@@zach6464 Before you jump down to the area where the BTRs are (the one that looks exactly like the Multiplayer map Countdown), you can go up some steps and get a Javelin to shoot at the tanks. It's not too obvious, I'll admit, yes, but it's there. Like it's been said, COD 4 is an older game so there are many instances where you have a surprising amount of freedom in how to complete objectives. Though not knowing how to chuck C4 around is a bit odd. It's a really common thing in Multiplayer.

Me, born in 1997 and only played on PC: I can recall a time when Call of Duty never existed. It exists for a month after they release the annual one and for the other 11 months it does not exist.
A lot of young people today treat it that way, and tend to see it is starting what is now a passé trend of modern shooters. As someone born in the 80’s, MW was a breath of fresh air to the sci-fi and WW2 shooters that dominated up until that time.
@@Ebalosus a game set in modern era isnt passé at all, just take a look at bf2042 or call of duty vanguard. ww2 isnt at all popular and clearly scifi isnt either
Price saying "Check your corners" was forever ingrained in my mind after CoD4... I was so happy to hear him say it in the new MW, I never hear many people talk about him saying that but it has actually stuck in my mind forever, in games and in real life.
Ugh, "new MW". Great game, biggest complaint is its dumbass title. Same thing can be said with the amazing God of War reboot, now we all have to refer to the newer one as version 2019 and the previous one as just CoD 4.
The fact that Metal Gear Solid 4 mocked and saw how the gaming infustry is going to be in the future after Modern Warfare tells you how this game impact is still today. I played when i was 12 and it was a before and after for me, it introduced me into many topics i loved since.
This was probably the most amazing experience I’ve ever had playing a game. It literally felt like you were playing a movie and the missions in Chernobyl got the blood pumping the first time you played it. I’ve never had another experience like that since
Can we all just appreciate how amazing the soundtrack is in this game? The heart pumping tracks like "War Pig" that give you the sense of being a marine, and "Sniper - Dash" track(my favourite one) that captures extreme tension and anxiety of what could happen If you fuck it up. I honestly think it fit more than MW2's compelling score. Not only that but CoD 4's soundtrack has some really big attention to detail, almost all the tracks reference the main theme of the game, and hell, even "Sniper - Dash" is a complete remaking of "War Pig", but instead of using rock, it's drums and orchestral elements(correct me if im wrong) and then going back to the soothy tracks of Cernobyl, which is surprising how no one notices this. IMO, the composer is a legend. My favourite Call of Duty Campaign.
@@Gruntvc I disagree. Modern Warfare 2019 is at the same level of quality of 2007's hit. I think you didn't play it. It's got an amazing campaign with an amazing main theme(score).
@Anthony is Okay, I did, even bought it day 1. Very poorly written and its depiction of Russians is...yeah... It has moments, like Clean House. But it definitely fails to be the morally grey conflict the devs claimed it would be. You don't even play as a US Marine.
@@Gruntvc the whole Russian controversy's been done in many more videogames. Also how aggressively they were portrayed was only in one specific part of Russia not the whole.
@Anthony is Okay, The devs/writers claimed this would be a morally grey conflict and that Barkov was a rogue officer like Kurtz from Apocalypse Now. Neither of those happened in this game/story. Russian soldiers are depicted like Waffen SS fanatics. And Barkov is not disowned until he's killed. Compare that to MW 2007 that pretty much right at the beginning allies you with allied Russian soldiers. And the villain, Zahkev, is an extremist that Russia does not endorse and actively fights to stop. All Modern Warfare 2019 needed was, I dunno, a scene of Russian soldiers helping civilians like that part in Spec Ops The Line. Or, have Russian soldiers actively helping to stop Barkov. I know they bring in Kamarov in the Spec Ops mode, but that feels more like a set up for the sequel that resembles more the classic 2007 MW than this 2019 one did. I don't hate this game, I actually had some fun and liked parts. But in no way will I claim this is an amazing game worthy of awards. It in no way surpasses the 2007 original, except maybe graphically. But MWR from 2016 fixes that short coming too.
I remember the first time I played that mission on veteran and me and macmillan got on the helicopter when the timer ran out. Since the sit down animation didn't finish yet, i ran out of time even though i was literally sitting in the chopper.

"You aren't entitled to a kill irrespective of how you reach the enemy. Clearing squads can only be done when you set up the best sight lines or exploited a gap in your enemy's defense. It’s so good but when you remaster a game you want to focus on giving that original feel, and not removing dumb map glitches, adding micro transactions, and a “variety pack” of maps we bought years before

As a member of the Air Force. When we viewed AC-130 footage during down time in tech school, the other students and the instructor thought it was cool and badass. So it really does depend on the person.
And this is why you don't force opinions down other peoples' throats. Let the art speak for itself and allow people to draw their own conclusions. It is certainly both cool and disturbing.
This is one of my favorite games ever, and I only played the remaster about a year ago. The campaign, gameplay, story, soundtrack, environments, atmosphere are all perfect. This game is a masterpiece and I doubt it will ever be topped by any other Call of Duty in the future.
Just mentioning "All Ghillied Up" gave me goosebumps. Genuinely the most immersive and unique missions from any war game I've ever played. Simply naming a mission gives me the desire to go and play the campaign of a 15 year old game.

I would even say you've helped shape some of my opinions on games that I despised, and given me the chance to be more critical with things. Though not high and mighty enough that I can't enjoy something just because it's objectively a mess. So I just want to say thank you for putting things in a new perspective for me. I can't wait to hear your critique for the rest of the series. I do have a question on the next game. Though is a bit broader then I should make. Or is it to big a can of worms to worry about right now? Please let us know. Sincerely your fan, Sean Conrad
One thing about the story is definitely how it also gets you to bond with the characters. I felt so close to Price, Gaz, Griggs and the rest. At the end, upon my first time playing , I felt heartbroken knowing I was the lone survivor of that final mission, watching comrades fall. It struck a cord as victory really came at a cost. MW1, is definitely an Anti-War game. The soundtrack is also brilliant. It catches the essence of everything so well. What an experience, absolutely unforgettable.

Cheers!
Pause, you say ‘all’ the mods he showed? Cuz I certainly hope in that list there’s one exception

Dude, what a fantastic video. Brilliant pacing, packed with detail and a complete nostalgia trip. Thank you!
After 2 minutes in I said to myself, "Man his editing has come such a long way." Great work man, it's inspiring to see you grow.
I managed to finish One Shot, One Kill on Veteran in the remaster in one try
My years of pain and agony have paid off
I remember the first time I played that mission on veteran and me and macmillan got on the helicopter when the timer ran out. Since the sit down animation didn't finish yet, i ran out of time even though i was literally sitting in the chopper.
@@austintc369 I would probably break the controller at that point
Whoa there's a new TH-cam feature that tells you what part of the video you're on. That's great
Holy heck, usually I can't even sit through a 40minute episode of my favourite TV show without going out to the kitchen, or something, but I've started this video, and didn't even switched tabs.
Thanks master! Looking forward for your next project!
You know a video’s about to be great whenever it starts with Blue Stahli
Was looking for this exact comment.
Oh, thanks for pointing it out! Love it when he uses Fixt Music.
I was actually introduced to Blue Stahli by my CoD4 clan leader. Doubled the nostalgia effect of this video.
"You aren't entitled to a kill irrespective of how you reach the enemy. Clearing squads can only be done when you set up the best sight lines or exploited a gap in your enemy's defense. Any mistakes during these attempts are immediately punished and rarely undeserved." Great line, and I'm keeping that tucked away.
Yes finally someone else that sees this as one of the best remastered games of all time. So many people were too focused on the absolute garbage way Activision handled it to see the beautiful thing raven software created.
Got it and IW for 15Bucks and I haven't touched IW but have most of PS4 game playtime
It’s so good but when you remaster a game you want to focus on giving that original feel, and not removing dumb map glitches, adding micro transactions, and a “variety pack” of maps we bought years before
Rip Raven, sof 1, 2 were amazing games, also quake 4 was underrated
The only thing that bothers me is that they called their remake a remaster.
@@Karv3r I'd say it is a remaster though, they didn't change anything. They kept the original feel while improving only the visuals.
Oh man, One shot one kill last stand... I remember that on my first playthrough I actually was sitting at the right in front of the enemy respawn at the right side of the map (where is intel is actually placed) just to lower amount of enemies on this stage just to scream like crazy when the doors behind me actually opened, revealing 10+ guns pointing at my back.
Hard to believe that was 12 years ago. Damn, time surely flies.
Nice “in the end, it didn’t even matter” slip in there lmao
I've watched this channel nearly since the beginning and remember people saying you deserve more subs. Well, here we are at nearly 450k and that's still just as true!
"In partnership with FIXT"
BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I KNOOOOOOOOOOO RITE?
@@Raycevick Flext
Saw all the Blue Stahli and FIXT stuff in the credits and my brain is like "Oh does he have that Celldweller remix of Feed the Monster in here"?
Sadly no, but STILL
This is what we call a "Gamer Moment" partnering with Klayton and FIXT.
That clip that played when he said “noob tube hallways” around 27:10... I spent so long there, and the answer was about an inch from my left thumb the whole time
Let's do this. I've been itching for more Raycevick.
"in the end, it didn't even matter..."
best segue of 2019
Can yoh please explain this to me? I saw another dude mention it and I’m not sure I catch on.
@@falcononpc9845 it's a reference to a song
We tried so hard
We got so far
But in the end
It didn't even matter
@Falconel it's a quote from Linkin Park - In The End.
That multiplayer footage made my heart hurt with nostalgia.
Love the fact they kept all the OG glitches besides out of map glitches too.
If Price still thinks the training room world record is garbage, he probably can noclip thru walls and has guns literally hitting targets thru walls
This is one of my favorite games ever, and I only played the remaster about a year ago. The campaign, gameplay, story, soundtrack, environments, atmosphere are all perfect. This game is a masterpiece and I doubt it will ever be topped by any other Call of Duty in the future.
The perfect video for my 3 hour ride. Thanks Raycevick!!
Teo_II u have a lot of data
Or at least a third of it
Just mentioning "All Ghillied Up" gave me goosebumps.
Genuinely the most immersive and unique missions from any war game I've ever played.
Simply naming a mission gives me the desire to go and play the campaign of a 15 year old game.
Me: Huh, Raycevick hasn't uploaded in a while, I wonder how big his next video is seeing as how last time he took a break the Andromeda video was an hour long
*Sees that new video is on COD4 and is an hour long*
Me: Looks like I'm not going to be focusing in class today then
Save it for after class
Raycevick holy shit it’s actually you I’ve been blessed
If you somehow come across this, I just wanted to say that I’m so, so grateful for your content. It’s in-depth, insightful, and methodical in a way that many video essayists too often aren’t, and has really gotten me to learn new things about both franchises I love (COD, Doom, Mass Effect) and one I’d never even heard of. I don’t care how long it takes between videos, as long as you maintain the quality of your videos, you’ll always have a loyal viewer in me.
All ghilied up : still the most epic modern era shotter mission of all times
The white phosphorus scene from Spec Ops: The Line ain't bad either.
@@randalica92 indeed. But rly for me nothing beats this mission in a modern 21st century setting . Just the tank sneaking scene with the ghilie suits and the sneaking under the trucks. I was legit holding my breath a lot in this mission.
Agreed
@@marineduard6901 Yeah and such intense music
@@marineduard6901 What somewhat cheapened my experience with that mission was that I played stalker CoP before it. The more dynamic creepiness and suspense of CoP's Pripyat hit me much more effectively than the "tactical sightseeing" of MW. I liked "unsettlingly dangerous" Pripyat much more than "unsettling and dangerous" Pripyat, if that makes sense.
17:05 Just imagine what those soldiers are thinking. "Man, those nerds. Just look at how they are slacking while we have to act out doing an armed entry into their office for them!"
4 years later, people start signing up for the army because of this game!
Nah man, they knew exactly what was gonna happen. They thought this was the coolest shit ever, and they were probably honored with being able to bring their world to life in game.
Wholeheartedly agree about the remaster. That scene was brutal.
It's alright to take a break. I understand why, and it's fine. Though the fact that you felt guilty enough to shut down your patreon for while shows your care and commitment to us. I'm not a memebr of your patreon, but if I had the chase in me I would hand it over like Phillip J. Fry. Hearing how the development was for this game and the others that you've reviewed has inspired me to dive more into writing, and helped me tremendously learn what it takes to find and build a story.
In your next video on MW2, will you be discussing the recent rise during that time on the discussion of video game violence brought up by the media, and will you ever make a video about such a discussion? Or is it to big a can of worms to worry about right now? Please let us know.
Sincerely your fan,
Sean Conrad
One thing about the story is definitely how it also gets you to bond with the characters. I felt so close to Price, Gaz, Griggs and the rest. At the end, upon my first time playing , I felt heartbroken knowing I was the lone survivor of that final mission, watching comrades fall. It struck a cord as victory really came at a cost. MW1, is definitely an Anti-War game. The soundtrack is also brilliant. It catches the essence of everything so well. What an experience, absolutely unforgettable.
wait that's me 47:33 😂😂
This explains why Cod4's levels were so distinguishable and memorable. It's not all action. Also explains why it's the best.
The pre-production part of your videos is very unique, and pretty admirable. It's a genius way to pre explain and to get understanding of how and why "mistakes" or things that are "bad" end up in games.
Been binging the years later series in addition to the old halo vids (halo 3 is my favorite game of all time) all of its quality. Good shit.
I didn't know Raven did the remaster. Now I know why it's so good.
Boy I didn't think this video would make me miss medal of honor as much as it did I remember playing those oldies had no idea they had this much to do with the success of cod great video as always rycevick
This was one of the best, cleanest and most well produced TH-cam videos I've ever seen, great work
CoD4 was the shooter that got me into FPS. It was and still is one of my favorite games ever made. You nailed everything in this video. The game was a work of art!
What a riveting script.
I didn't grow up with Call of Duty but this does give me much more respect for Infinity Ward's work.
I've re watched this video 4 times in its entirety. You really did a great job with this video
"Take point."
Very chilling dialogues to hear from Captain Price, because I would always be following behind him and Gaz. And being told to go first legit had me a little uneasy when going into the house to save Nikolai. I love that stage honestly.
Thanks for including ProMod, and excluding MW 2019 as a totally different project.
Man the way you make these videos are incredible i just forgot about the world around me and focused on your video and the more i watched it i just realised call of duty has changed alot i remember playing COD4 on PC everytime from having a clan with actual websites to populated modded zombie servers to RAT HOUSE map to cod waw to mw2 the lobby trashtalking the nukes etc etc it was so simple and yet SO FUN and memorable.
I guess this makes COD the only true "other game franchise killer" title holder.
Well not on purpose anyway, I'm sure IWRespawn didn't want to be a wrong influence to other game developers of the era
Yep killed Halo because developers can't stop copying CoD instead of sticking to what made the game good in the first place.
@@ArcturusOTE they nicknamed it moh killer during development. I think they knew what they were doing.
