as a white belt i submitted a blue belt for the first time in a pretty nice arm bar when he stood up on my guard, and while i keep that close to my heart i also remember that he got me good in the next roll lmao
Dude, I just caught this blue belt in a inverted heel hook by pure luck yesterday. It was a desperation move that made it self open when I was trying to get out of the the heel hook he was putting me in. Needless to say I was shocked as I went from being ready to tap to tapping someone. I literally said out loud “Holy shit, that worked!”. This was early in the round and he was not pleased lol. Idk if it was because I am a 3 week in white belt that caught him or because it was a inverted heel hook. Which I know is pretty dangerous but didn’t realize thats was what I did until I was thinking about it today. Either way I got my ass handed to me the rest of the round. He tapped me like 3 times. Not mad at him all. I love rolling with the guy. But I’ll tell u what though. It was so worth it 🤣🤣
Yeah but if you only go after the best guys, you miss out on some of the humility you gain, youre able to mental gymnastic your way into thinking "oh im tough as nails i roll with the best, no one else wants to". Youve gotta get tapped by some bums
I like rolling with higher belts too, not all the time, but when the upper belts know you, know that you are showing up for class and working hard, they let me work a position a lot of time. They also talk me through escapes. Sometimes they will just smash me for a bit, but not to be a jerk or anything but they have to work their subs too.
For anyone looking to get more flexible, one dumb trick that has helped me is to stretch every time I brush my teeth and every time I wash my hands. This habit alone got me from barely touching my toes to almost getting my palms to the floor.
If you are a white belt submitting a purple or brown belt it’s because they let you get past guard and put themselves in a shitty spot so you could train. I’m a white belt 285lbs and I’ve tapped most of the higher belts but have no misconceptions. They let me get there and I got a submission sunk in. If they didn’t want me to get there, I wouldn’t have 😂.

I don’t mind training with lower belts just like me as a 2 stripe white belts and I also don’t mind rolling with higher belts. Even John Danaher mentioned in a podcast wow he is always amazed how visiting lower belts will say things like "I tapped Garry Tonon today" as if Garry was not just going easy and trying some new approaches.
Hey I have a social question: I tend to travel to a lot of gyms so I see/experience this scenario a lot. For the question I will use the most recent issue I experienced: When I roll with new people I haven't rolled with before, I try to just play defense and match their energy. Because of this I will happily find myself in bad positions that I can work on getting out of. Sometimes this means fighting out of "deep" submissions. In this case, a guy put me in a Calf slicer from the truck. Not only do I have decent compression tolerance, it also wasn't in very well. I literally wasn't feeling it. So we stayed there a while and eventually I got out and to a dominant position before the match ended. After he came over and chatted to me about how irresponsible it was to stay there and how it made him worried that he was going to snap my leg. I often just don't say anything back and let time do the talking for me with folks like this, but I want to find a more proactive way to let them know "hey it wasn't close" without triggering any ego or defensive response. I also ironically understand that it is MY ego that doesn't want to let people like this have the satisfaction
Its important to train with people both stronger and weaker. Training with people stronger than you points out your weaknesses and trains you to make less mistakes. Training with people weaker than you teaches you to be able to capitalize on the mistakes of others.

Sometimes the most constructive criticism you can give is to simply point out that there is a problem. Sometimes that's because you don't have a solution, but you know that step one in problem solving is to recognize the issue, and sometimes you know the solution, but you also know that if you give the solution it's akin to giving a man a fish rather than teaching him to fish... like you know that the lesson usually only sticks when the person figures it out for themselves. Chewy, I have a question. What is the best way to address possible perceived favoritism at your gym. I have not experienced this first hand but I have a friend of mine who has trained in the last couple years at like three different gyms and says he feels like they all have a "core" group, and if you're not in with that group, you either don't get the help you need from higher belts, or that they play favorites when it comes to evaluation time. This concerns me because if this indeed is an issue that is prevalent at a lot of gyms, it makes me cautious about investing too much time somewhere where that investment will not be recognized because of, for lack of a better description, high school drama.

?? You have talked about a white belt having to roll with all higher belts. My question is what are your thoughts on building my game as a brown belt rolling with mainly white belts?? We only have three brown belts (if all of them show up) at our school, and the professor. It is mainly myself and one other brown belt each week. Any tips?
Hey chewy I have a question of the day for you, so I’m a senior in high school, I wrestled my sophomore and junior year (our senior year got cancelled 😢) and I’ve done RMA (basically self defense/street fighting) for 14 years, and I joined a new bjj school recently and I keep being put with the upper belts, which I have no problem with, but the main guy they put me with usually takes up half of our drill time trying to explain the moves to me when 80% of the time I already know how to do them, and I don’t wanna be that guy and tell him I already know how to do it, any advice would be greatly appreciated
Knowledge doesn't always come with a belt. I've seen taekwondo guys that their instructor is also a purple belt in bjj so they grade in TKD but would do all types of sparring: sport Olympic style, kickbox, roll and MMA. So they roll every week but are ungraded in bjj, then bowl into a bjj gym and get asked have you rolled before and they reply "a little". It was almost a joke that these "white belt" TKD guys were so good.
Here's a dumb idea that has helped my flexibility. Might be worth a try... Stretch every time you brush your teeth, and stretch every time you wash your hands. This habit got me from barely touching my toes to being able to almost put my palms on the ground.
Didn't Danaher make the comment about rolling with lower skill/belts when talking about high level people? Don't think he was talking about white/blue belts.
You need to learn to grit through it until you can wiggle your head out. If it's across your neck then try and create space. Preventative measures, if someone gets you on your side, try and go flat to your back.
The funniest thing about wreslters is they don't understand that they've been grappling (intensively) for years. Yeah, you can "beat" people who have only grappled for a few months in their spare time. Duh.
@Chewjitsu I have been a 4 stripe white belt for years i have gone on and off from juijitsu for a few months at a time work related issues health issues , but I have been training for over 10 years my sensei was a white belt at the same time as I was we were training with the same sensei and we have always been friends , he would always tell me to take it easy on the newcomers I did now a few newcomers are blue belts and I can beat them but I am still not promoted i am humble , easy going and all that...should I just destroy my teammates to make a point or do I talk with my sensei? thank you.
If he is telling you to go easy then most likely you are talked about by others or he has seen you rolling. I am a one strip white belt for a year now...but for newer people or smaller rolling partner or less skilled...I just work on passing guard and holding positions..hell....I even put myself in a bad spot to get out again...allowed them to attack and so I get to defend..unless they are going all out then we shall meet fire with fire but I also find myself just relaxing and defending and working on sweeping.... Again...if someone said something...its because we already did it....hopes this helps....and the belt doesn't make who you are...keep training bro
I just started BJJ 2 weeks ago and they put me against this girl that is 13 years old and I'm 21 and 6'2 180 but I don't know if I should go full force on this girl or take it easy cause I'm brand new to grappling and I've submitted her twice but I don't want to hurt the girl any advice anyone?
My friend is a blue belt and she got me into BJJ...I am bigger and heavier than her...I love how she transitions and defends..but I have NEVER tried to submit her...I just defend or hold positions..also passing her guard....so I allowed her to work and attacked me....that was from day one. I do that to brand new smaller/lighter new white belt...oh..I am only a 1 stripped white belt also...but its just NOT fair rolling with someone smaller or less skilled... I loved rolling with new BIGGER white belt ...even if they are 100lbs over me...I am 175lb...this allowed me to see how my skills against their weight and strength....hopes this helps...at my gym..it is REALLY frown on going hard on our female classmates...unless a female is comfortable rolling with me...I rather not be the guy that makes a stupid mistake..
With all due respect, on that first comment…. Did you just hit him back with the “I know you are but what am I?” 😂😂 the ol’ im rubber and you’re glue defense?
My channel is a mix of BJJ & weight loss progression. I’m a 2 stripe white belt, do you think I still have a place on TH-cam or will higher belts think “you know nothing”?

I think there's room for perspective from that level. Might be nice to hear from someone actually at that level and their learnings instead of from an upper belt reflecting on what it was like for them at that level
@@thatsydvicious thank you so much for your reply Sydney, that’s actually such a helpful comment.
Thanks for the content Chewy! Any hip dexterity stretch ideas?
No. Sumo stance deadlift, from light to moderate poundages.
I tried a few sessions of dry needling to help my hip flexibility. I was skeptical, but is made a significant improvement. 🤷♂️
Go into a knee on belly lunge with your right knee, raise your right arm up to the sky, switch sides. Pigeon yoga pose.
Here's a dumb idea that has helped my flexibility. Might be worth a try... Stretch every time you brush your teeth, and stretch every time you wash your hands. This habit got me from barely touching my toes to being able to almost put my palms on the ground.
I’d like to become a chewcrew member but I can’t find the option.
Didn't Danaher make the comment about rolling with lower skill/belts when talking about high level people? Don't think he was talking about white/blue belts.
I love rolling with higher belts because it’s fun to talk trash while your getting your ass beat they just laugh.
I do this all the time 😂
hey quick random question, what do you think of tye dye gis?
Coach I often get caught in leg scissor hold and tapped (even sometimes my head trap in there shin, calf area), what should I do
Pls help 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Don’t get caught with that same submission
You need to learn to grit through it until you can wiggle your head out. If it's across your neck then try and create space. Preventative measures, if someone gets you on your side, try and go flat to your back.
I think people use Ego in relation to bravado. Probably a better term would be “ Leave your insecure ego at the door”
The funniest thing about wreslters is they don't understand that they've been grappling (intensively) for years. Yeah, you can "beat" people who have only grappled for a few months in their spare time. Duh.
I think rolling with higher belts gives you better defense
Great video oss
Your being egotistical by calling me egotistical about calling them egotistical. Hahaha just kidding! Love your videos bro!
@Chewjitsu I have been a 4 stripe white belt for years i have gone on and off from juijitsu for a few months at a time work related issues health issues , but I have been training for over 10 years my sensei was a white belt at the same time as I was we were training with the same sensei and we have always been friends , he would always tell me to take it easy on the newcomers I did now a few newcomers are blue belts and I can beat them but I am still not promoted i am humble , easy going and all that...should I just destroy my teammates to make a point or do I talk with my sensei? thank you.
Sensei?? You sure you’re training BJJ 😂
@@mattlewallen1832 I train in mexico dude its different in every country
@@JAMEZANDRADE Word bro👊. Keep up the good work. I started 4 months ago and am hooked!
If you think you smashed a higher belt and you brag about... You deserve the consequence to that action.
Great stuff.
thats my kinda white belt. beauty.
Definitely don't go full force. Match her pace and strength and work your technique.
If you're putting yourself on the internet in video form, you open yourself to all forms of critiques and trolling. Decide if you can mentally take it and go forward.
@@badxradxandy fair comment Andrew! I’ll keep uploading 🤙
I think there's room for perspective from that level. Might be nice to hear from someone actually at that level and their learnings instead of from an upper belt reflecting on what it was like for them at that level
@@thatsydvicious thank you so much for your reply Sydney, that’s actually such a helpful comment. I’m trying to document my own progress/process in learning BJJ but present it in an interesting and fun way on here. I’ve recently seen some white belts almost discouraging people starting and I’m really the opposite in mindset. Hopefully, some people will see my white belt videos and see that it really is for everyone and to know the good and bad aspects happen to us all. I’ll try to keep them as honest as possible! Thank you 🙏 😁
I thought wrist locks are illegal at white belt?
Can anyone tell me which video the first comment was posted on?
Self defense, how to break guard
Ability has no color, but it’s easy to spot. A mistake is made when trying to force it into a belt scheme.
Sure is a lot of explaining for higher belts losing. I guess the ego thing really is confusing.
I didn't hear an explanation of higher belts losing. I heard an explanation of lower belts winning.
@@danquirke443 Purple belt, not white.
Yoga With Adriene is great
Chewie out here referencing Freud 👀
I like to read too. . .
@@Chewjitsu love to see it!
Ego means injury 😆
Mma is different every time you struck a black belt color change to brown to purple 😆
HAHA that's my comment, but I once heard " some man would be willing to send his son to war before he is called hypocrite"
Seen a gym with a "leave your ego at the door" plaque. It's cringe.
We had a new guy a couple of days ago who came in and got pissed off at one of the higher belts because he couldn't submit him. The new guy was much older and stronger and instead of being reasonable and realizing that this kid had things he could teach him he got pissed and stormed out of the gym.
Totally get why they would put up a plaque like that after seeing what that guy did
lol he really is doing the yo eliott
It seems you never here about wins by wrist lock. I wonder why?
Wait a minute... Leave your ego at the door... Your married to your ego... Soooo, leave your wife at the door? Ahhh the Force is strong in this one!
What if I am just floating around the world not knowing who I am? 😂
YOU'RE being egotistical for thinking I'M egotistical for thinking someone ELSE is egotistical, so nyeh!
Leave your ego at the door should maybe be changed to BE HUMBLE.
Noice!!
Wearing chuckys shirt
Phrases like "leave your ego" are often abused by egotistical assholez to manipulate others.
