I've seen this before with ducks, that most likely would of been a male attacking the mother, sometimes when their chicks have hatched and are in the water, other Males see an opportunity to get it on with the mother duck and will try to mate with her right then and there. it can result in mum drowning, and the chicks getting hurt or killed in the process. I'm relieved that he was there watching over her and her babies.

Little ducklings have to be the cutest baby animals in the world. There are plenty of other babies that are super-cute, but a group of perfectly swimming peeping ducklings just melt my heart.
Tiny Kittens in Vancouver BC has a cat named Auracuda who was born with a huge cleft pallet. She was tube fed for more than twelve weeks until she was big enough for oral surgery. The surgery to repair the cleft was successful and she’s a tiny but healthy four year old cat!
Yes! I remember! I constantly watched the livecam when she was born. I love little Aura! While tube feeding could have been a possibility for this little pup, that's a more severe cleft than Aura's. Also Shelly is quite experienced when it comes to tube/bottle feeding small kittens. This pup's owner likely is not. But if the pup was with a very experienced owner who COULD tube feed the pup (the tube directly going to the stomach, bypassing the cleft entirely) until he was MUCH bigger and older; therefore the surgery being a lot less risky.
it is interesting how birds save each other. i have some sort of inner yard outside the block and i usually hear a lot of magpies, so one day there was this one magpie that kept making a lot of noise, so i went on my balcony and saw that the magpie was making noise to protect a baby collared dove/pigeon that was sitting on the ground, from a cat. it really strikes me how that magpie was really protecting that baby and making all that noise. luckily, i headed outside and helped that baby by putting it in a shoebox on a higher ground and i hope it flew by itself at some point, bcs it wasnt there when i came back.
