This reminds me of something that happened over the summer. My favorite brand, Kikiz Cosmeticz, kept having one person leave reviews on her products, saying the lip gloss she got had poop in it and rating it 1 star. She left several of these poop reviews on every product Kikiz Cosmeticz currently had on their website. So she had to change the way her review system works. I disagree. Retinol IS effectively being banned because most people need to use a percentage over 0.3 to get sufficient results. I find it very misleading when people claim that it's not being banned. Yes, there are loop holes like switching to Tretinoin or Retinal, but effective high potency Retinol is banned.
Well considering up until 2020 we could run to any pharmacy and get 0.05 or 0.1% tretinoin but now I got to a dermatologist in hopes that I’d be able to get a prescription tube of the same stuff I was able to get without prescription half a year ago (still in 2020) only to be told it’s not available at all anymore … like it’s not made or imported in the country anymore. I’m sure they definitely want to completely wipe any remaining functional forms of vit A entirely. Nobody can convince me otherwise.
I will just buy my products from another not EU country like the retinol serum from trinity London (english bramd). Just like I buy Korean products from Asian online markets.
@@binarytrash there is not real benefit to wiping it off the market entirely. The reason it's not being imported is because it isn't profitable enough to do so for the small amount of people just accessing through prescription and with it being a recent change there probably also isn't as many brands approved to sell it as a medicine marketing the ingredient.
Yayy you're back!! I've been re-binging your "when beauty turns ugly" series these 2 weeks :) Also just when I am about to turn 30 they decide to limit retinol?😅Let's hope this "ban" doesn't extend to India 🙏
I understand why the EU is limiting retinal for the concerns over overuse, but I don’t think they should legislate just because someone might be over using something. It’s being very overly cautious. And I am far too paranoid to trust the certification for what is considered green. It’s probably just my trust issues talking though. I guess we’ll see how well it works when it’s fully implemented.
the thing is: the regulation serves to protect people that do not know better. basically: cosmetics you can get over the counter should be useable by everybody without them having to know exactly how and how often to use it. You can get higher percentages either by buying cosmetic ingredients to make your own cosmetics, or by getting a prescription by a dermatologist, which may not be covered by the health care system, but you still can get it this way. Since it is a so callled "privately paid" prescription you can get it even via those tele prescription services. So it mostly gets down to anybody wanting a higher percentage needing to show they talked to somebody who told them how to properly use it for their skin.
I’m not sure if I read it wrong, but I saw something about retinol being linked to loss in bone density and osteoporosis when used in high pourcentage for a long period of time.. 😅
@@pantherhealingI mean any high percentage can cause harm. Americans can use a very high dose of whitening stuff, the Uk and EU cannot (or it’s not really ideal).
@@abigray8585 yeah I think the EU bannes a lot of stuff in general. It’s not that whatever they banne will kill you asap and other continent who don’t follow are trying to necessarily harm us, but more of a « let’s not risk it ». 🙃 also more and more children are using skincare so I guess it’s good that they regulate these active ingredients 🙌🏻
@@pantherhealingthe thing is: the EU has another approach to these things. basically you have to demonstrate your product/ingredient is safe to be allowed to sell it. Not the EU having to show it is not safe. The percentages allowed are the amount that producers and scuentific studies demonstrated that they are safe to use even for people with no education. You can get higher percentages as prescription or with certain licenses still.
Even in the US Retinols/ Vitamin A are regulated but in different categories based on the percentages, the higher the percentage the more likely you need to get a prescription from your doctor. Alpha Arbutin isn't regulated the precursor to hydroquinone which is. It interesting that they are regulating Kojic acid. As for Green Washing it started in Cleaning products and then it started to move into beauty and Skin care here sectors. I guess you could say hybrid and electric car along with MPG cars were marketed as "Greener" options but it's more about regulation and incentives for those types cars here in the US.
yay James is back! Reddit really do be competing with twitter for The most incredulous & Extra mfs on the internet, I swear. Also wtf EU? Those are some really low retinol percentages. I hope the market share doesn't impact availability of higher percentages in the US. It's already hard enough to find non-beginner retinols...

I love invertebrate macro photography and I was hoping the cream could help me get started on a collection of photos of bugs you commonly find in the home without having to hunt them down and bother them. I guess it’s true that if something sounds too good to be true it probably isn’t.
@@abigray8585 They don't literally mean the black market. There is a legit website that sells tretinoin imported from India and they ship from within the EU
Hi James! With retinol being a derivative of vitamin A, can it be said that vitamin A could be added to your daily vitamin intake in order to improve skin from the inside out? Thanks 😊
What I couldn't establish from the EU regulations on retinol is whether this also covers Tretinoin? I purchase my tretinoin from Spain currently (based in the UK) as its stronger over the counter.
In the Netherlands i can buy products with retinol and retinal online but not with tretinoin. It is only available with permission from your GP. It can really change the skin structure and something that can reach so deep into the skin is seen as medicine. General practitioners do not prescribe tretinoin 'just like that'.
James! Marina Abramovíc has come out with a skincare line which has really rocked the art world. I appreciate it from a conceptual perspective, let the woman make her coins, but I'd love it if you reviewed it or dug a bit deeper into the products and their claims though be warned! It does feel like a ✨clean✨ skincare type of vibe.
Hi James! 🖤 would you mind doing a video about fine lines under the eyes / wrinkles under the eyes? I’m 24 and idk if it’s because I’m tired but man they will not go away 😭
James have you ever tried/reviewed STRATIA ? obsessed with Liquid gold (called Lipid gold now I guess?) and couldn't find it on your channel - every time I stop using it I miss it and order it again. works so well and great "user experience" - I generally have to be fragrance free but it has a DIVINE natural scent (from sea buckthorn I think). I use it like a serum under another moisturizer because I'm dry. Interested in ordering their other products
I pretty much use Stratia' s products exclusively. You really should try their Interface moisturizer, which is a peptide based cream. I also recommend their Rewind Serum. Oh, and their Velvet Cleansing Milk is amazing as well! I love it all. Especially the prices!
James, I wanted to thank you for inspiring me to start a regular skincare routine. It's only been a week and I'm already getting compliments. I'm also enjoying the process, even though it's just a three/four step routine (wash, vitamin serum [vitamin c, e, b, and niacinamide], retinol [every other night until I get used to it] and moisturizer). I tried adding a toner a couple days ago, but it made me itch (nothing more than itching, thankfully) so I'll probably give it away
So, what are the UK online shops which sell Paula’s choice and deliver to EU, which you would recommend? Alternatively, which physical stores in UK sell Paula’s choice you would recomment? (Because in the end, in the season the return flight ticket to London is like 20 euros…)
Because she has the nerve to try to convince women with less money than her to ditch their makeup and buy her expensive skin products so they too can be “beautiful and free.” She knows we will never look as good as she does without makeup, but she knows some people don’t know that. That’s what celebrities like her and the Kardashians do- they act a part to sell you things. Her beauty comes from her money, but she’s trying to tell us it comes from her skincare… She’s had more work done than most people in Hollywood for f***s sake.

I started going makeup-free during the pandemic, and realized how much I enjoyed it. I was raised by a mother who refused to even get gas without a full beat, and I was exactly the same. But going out bare faced DOES feel vulnerable & honestly freeing, after years of being scared to be seen that way. Now I wear makeup when I feel like it, as opposed to wearing because I feel ugly without it. I can totally believe that Pamela Anderson’s makeup-free journey was similar & authentic.
SDJ #59 is the only SDJ product that i actually like, because it’s the only one i can actually smell. i’m glad to know it’s kryptonite and not magnetic 😅
What's crazy about the spider thing is I *have* been mimicked by a recluse before in my house lol. For whatever reason it didnt want me past it, so if I moved right, it would move to my right to "block" me and did this for minutes with me freaking out trying to figure out what to do... This was years ago, so very unrelated to anything skincare, but they can behave that way and follow you around. Its really freakin odd LOL.
Wolf spiders are absolutely a menace if you live in an area like I do where they are native. Yes, they will chase you around the room and they are huge. Had this happen in my home years ago. But it’s absolutely absurd to think they are attracted in any way to skin cream or beauty product. Typically, they go into your home to seek shelter because their previous home (shrub, landscaping) was disturbed in some way.
James! I’d love to see a video of you doing skincare routines from start to finish at different price levels. Skin care can be so confusing and with so many products out there, I’d love to see your recommendations and how to use them from start to finish 🙂 it would also be nice to see different price points of products used for the same routine. 🫶🏻
I seen the sol review when it was first posted and brushed it off. I never thought that it would be a viral thing…lol. I have the body butter and spray. I can say that it doesn’t attract spiders but it does attract men👍🏽
I don’t understand this whole “it’s like kryptonite to…” saying?!? Kryptonite was the one thing lethal to Superman….why would wolf spiders (or any spiders, for that matter) go full force toward something that will kill them? I’ve recently heard the saying used in other contexts as well. Am I missing something?
honestly being prescribed differin and struggling starting it under supervision (!!!) made me question it being OTC overseas. that being said the retinol restrictions 👀
Well my retinal and adapalene are not so I am fine. Also you can in the same EU order whatever online for third country you just won't be able to purchase it in your drugstore, pharmacy or whatever store ypu were buying it without the prescription. They also banned titanium dioxide last year (not frot the sunscreens but it was common conservation ingredient in many pills)
Actually this is the maximum % allowed here in Brazil. I think it's a good thing, because a lot of people don't have access to information that has quality and reliability
As an American with very strong British ties, I must say I am extraordinarily proud of what parliament is doing with the green washing laws. Many other countries, including the United States need to take a page out of Britain’s new approach having better and safe products for not only people, but the environment as well.
It’s complete bullshit yes sometimes it works but that doesn’t mean it’s because it’s “clean” honestly why would you scare people of other products when it own product is great
So if I buy my Korean skincare with retinol from yesstyle I wont have to worry about the retinol restrictions? Cause istg I hate having to switch products that I'm already used too
The spider cream thing is one i can actually vouch for. I got two free samples from either Mecca or sephora, and yea they definitely attract at least one if they're around. Its odd, but I can't say it's a lie sadly.
After trying the new Sol de Janeiro lotion, I haven't noticed any spiders 😂. The scent, however, isn't for me. It reminds me of Estee Lauder Sensuous perfume from the early 2000s, and gives me a massive headache 😢. It's a great formula though.
Excerpt from coslaw “Furthermore, the SCCS identified maximum safe limits for the use of Vitamin A in cosmetic products. Consequently, the European Commission transposed them into the new draft regulation. The restrictions concern the following forms of Vitamin A: Retinol, Retinyl Acetate, and Retinyl Palmitate.” So retinaldehyde should be fine.
I don’t have that scent of the bum bum cream but I have the og one and the deodorant & wear them allllll the time. I live in an older house in an area with wolf spiders and I can say that spiders aren’t attracted to my lotion one bit. Not to mention the fact it’s not even spider season… just like greenwashing, not everything on the internet is true. 🙄 and there are way better ways to get attention! But good on the EU for looking into greenwashing! Im the type of person that researches everything cause my skin is sensitive and I’m allergic to common ingredients (like SLS) and i hate when I see people saying things like that are “bad”. They have their purpose, and it’s not bad for everyone…. But few actually look further into claims
LEAVE. MY. RETINOL. ALONE!! I'm UK based and I'm really hoping Paula's Choice won't stop their usual retinol products. Can you really overdose vitamin A just casually using serums? The reasoning behind it seems fishy
As a European I don't think ''banning retinol'' is being too causios because here are some teenagers who are starting to use retinol as a anti-aging product and are overdosing it and burning/ruining their skin barrier or even their skin.

Exactly
yay James is back!
"green" and "clean beauty" gives me the ick. like that is the best way to turn off educated consumers. unfortunately, many people arent educated lmao. anyway, as someone who is actively studying to be either a dermatologist or cosmetic chemist, yea, clean beauty is just ghsjhgsjfhgeahjfgdagfhdaghjdagfjdhagfgdgjha
I believe I also read that Pamela Anderson cut back/stopped wear makeup because her makeup artist (for years) passed away. That kinda helped push her to stop wearing it and reflect on why she was wearing it. I don't think it was a publicity stunt either.
Johnny and Kevin were freaking hilarious reviewing the spider craze 😂
Also, don’t spiders do little dances when they want to mate? I don’t think they chase 😂
They do a happy dance when you feed them.😊
I love watching the jumping spiders in my garden, they have various leg-lifting dances.
Happy Sunday James! I can always count on you to bring clarity to the utter craziness that is marketing and influencer claims. You are so refreshing.
Oh and I refuse to even give a moment of time to the whole f’ing spider fiasco. Just stop it people.
kryptonite doesnt attract superman, it weakens him. it takes away his abilities.
We see that in Bernie Sanders whenever Biden gets too close. Bernie simply forgets everything he ever fought for and gets extremely bendable. 😂😅😂
I was really sad the spider lotion turned out to be fake. I love invertebrate macro photography and I was hoping the cream could help me get started on a collection of photos of bugs you commonly find in the home without having to hunt them down and bother them. I guess it’s true that if something sounds too good to be true it probably isn’t.
finally someone that's talking about the Retinol Ban
I know a good troll when I see one.. that spider story was hilarious tbh
While we can find OTC tretinoin on the black market in the EU, we will find retinol as well
Black market isn’t known for being safe, you could die trying to find your favourite product.
Thanks 😊
Redefining green. Pretty cool I think.
Pamela Anderson is beautiful with and without makeup. Not sure I’ll purchase her products because I already have a good skin regimen
Great channel! Super good research, as always.
200 euro's for a face cream and then here telling us that we're all addicted to having new things🤡
It HAS to be a new art performance
Love your channel, content and all advice on beauty. Keep up the great work and also love your accent and voice.
Thank you, as always, James.
Hi James! 🖤 would you mind doing a video about fine lines under the eyes / wrinkles under the eyes? I’m 24 and idk if it’s because I’m tired but man they will not go away 😭
Sleep on your back
@@06KK really? Just that would help…? I sleep on my back half of the night, but I’m a toss/turner lol
I’ve just finished a long shift at work, what a treat James
Happy Sunday James, have a wonderful rest day! 💜
Love your informative videos 🫶 Thank you for making them!
Lovely, informative video- as usual! ❤
Hello. Good Afternoon James 💜 Happy Sunday 💜
Kryptonit.... That would be a thing one avoid right? Not attract...
‘These VISCIOUS rumours…’ 😂
Ok so… I’ve been using that body butter and have encountered two spiders in my bed. Never had them before so like… 🤣
So, what are the UK online shops which sell Paula’s choice and deliver to EU, which you would recommend?
Alternatively, which physical stores in UK sell Paula’s choice you would recomment? (Because in the end, in the season the return flight ticket to London is like 20 euros…)
Glad you are back. Why are people upset with Pamela Anderson?
Ah, just got to it
Because she has the nerve to try to convince women with less money than her to ditch their makeup and buy her expensive skin products so they too can be “beautiful and free.” She knows we will never look as good as she does without makeup, but she knows some people don’t know that. That’s what celebrities like her and the Kardashians do- they act a part to sell you things. Her beauty comes from her money, but she’s trying to tell us it comes from her skincare… She’s had more work done than most people in Hollywood for f***s sake.
how do i use retinol correctly? i'm breaking out a bit
Grandissimo James!😉😘..Unico e simpaticissimo ! ..Ma tu, a parte tutte queste eveventuali restrizioni sui retinoidi, vorrei chiederti: .. ami il retinolo o derivati?..o preferisci altri attivi e componenti ..nei sieri in particolare? ..Ciao ..Grazie mille!😘🌷💖⭐
I just put Retinol on my face before starting the video 😂
Wolf spiders are absolutely a menace if you live in an area like I do where they are native. Yes, they will chase you around the room and they are huge. Had this happen in my home years ago. But it’s absolutely absurd to think they are attracted in any way to skin cream or beauty product. Typically, they go into your home to seek shelter because their previous home (shrub, landscaping) was disturbed in some way.
You make me laugh so much! We have the biggest spiders here in Australia without the cream LOL
Love this beauty news! Thanks so much for making these. Genuinely appreciated 🤍
I am confused, so if they think there is a safety risk then what about tretinoin? im using that 5 times a week
Am I missing something?
as a spider, I can't stand that Bom Bom. Returned it to Ulta right away!
🕷🕸🕷🕸🕷🕸🕷
I have the samples and didn’t like the smell …my house has tons of spiders and they showed no interest in it either 😂
honestly being prescribed differin and struggling starting it under supervision (!!!) made me question it being OTC overseas. that being said the retinol restrictions 👀
James, you look gorgeous! 😍
Nooooo. Not the retinol 🥲
Is retinal free from restriction?
What’s the difference between retinol and tretinoin
Actually this is the maximum % allowed here in Brazil. I think it's a good thing, because a lot of people don't have access to information that has quality and reliability
As an American with very strong British ties, I must say I am extraordinarily proud of what parliament is doing with the green washing laws. Many other countries, including the United States need to take a page out of Britain’s new approach having better and safe products for not only people, but the environment as well.
I wish that celebrities would just go back to launching perfumes again. There were so many affordable, nice options back then.
So happy they’re being more strict about green washing! I hate all the misleading nonsense brands put on their packaging. It’s disgusting!
They need to do the same thing for "clean"...
It’s complete bullshit yes sometimes it works but that doesn’t mean it’s because it’s “clean” honestly why would you scare people of other products when it own product is great
So if I buy my Korean skincare with retinol from yesstyle I wont have to worry about the retinol restrictions? Cause istg I hate having to switch products that I'm already used too
it's not illegal for you to own retinol products over the legal amount. that restriction is just for the companies.
Im from the UK so it's good we don't have those strict EU rules, but then again do we just establish our own rules, or do we copy the EU or US?
THERE YOU ARE🥰
The spider cream thing is one i can actually vouch for.
Hahaha, spiders coming out to make a move on you. Thank you James ❤
Excerpt from coslaw “Furthermore, the SCCS identified maximum safe limits for the use of Vitamin A in cosmetic products. Consequently, the European Commission transposed them into the new draft regulation. The restrictions concern the following forms of Vitamin A: Retinol, Retinyl Acetate, and Retinyl Palmitate.”
So retinaldehyde should be fine.
Ahh I’m here early !! Love your videos I don’t really comment but 😊have a nice day everyone who sees this
I tried buying from the USA. It was confiscated by customs
I live in Eastern Europe anddd thats not happening here... Not sure for "what" Europe this aplies 🤷♀️.
Do a video on Grande Lash! They were filed a lawsuit because of the side effects from the ingredient that is in the formula!
Brands need to start sueing people
I love this. Runnnn, a spider wants my face cream😂😂😂😂 🕷. .
I've never seen a fresh drop before. Glad I clicked
LEAVE. MY. RETINOL.
Loving the greenwashing ban.
The spider story killed me😂😂
Your skin is flawless. 😲
