@@tahlialyssethat's because it says "exile," but transforming alone does not. So Matzalantli (which is probably the card being referred to) will tap, transform, and become The Core still tapped. So no mana same turn.
@@thesamuraiman that's why I said that the main point was true, but that it was good to mention the distinction for crafting because it works a distinct way that is different. This comment could be aimed at a card that taps and transforms, or a crafting card, or all of the above, since Dev mentioned quite a few as being able to tap to activate the transform (paying for crafting, tap and discard, and tap to transform if you have 4 perm types in yard). Differentiating that some of them work to tap this way and some don't can be useful.
Good catch for both of you. Definitely meant the last two cards specifically in my comment though. Usually something is exiled and transformed to remove pesky counters that have accumulated. In this case I think they’ve used the transform mechanic to keep the interactions a bit more sane.
Quick note about Clavileno too is that he doesn't say "until end of turn" anywhere on the card so the vampire just permanently gains that dies ability.
Note on Deeproot pilgrimage. You don't get a merfolk every time one is tapped. When one or more is tapped. So if you declare attackers and attack with 5 merfolk, it will only produce 1 token. Same if you pay the cost for crewing something.
Very true. I came here to say that also. He probably misread it. Happens a few times every spoiler season, but good vibes. Note that you can crew a vehicle more than once so it'll be cool to crew 1... Then crew again and again. Effectively giving you a 1/1 hexproof for each merfolk you control ... Every turn.
@@piercearora7681nah, it's definitely better in merfolk, atleast in commander. The most popular merfolk commander is kumeno, and his whole gimmick is tapping merfolk. This card will get so much value in that deck. It also works with stuff that make your creatures into mana dorks.
@@piercearora7681 "Bitterblossom for Merfolk" doesn't sound like a bad card. You play it on 2, swing in with your 1-drop, immediately get a token, and probably keep getting a token every turn until your opponent plays a sweeper since merfolk often have hexproof and/or unblockable.
The cards in this set "just transform", they not exile and enters the battlefield transformed like other cards. So they keep their tap/unttap status (and many tap to transform) along with counters/auras/equipment and any effect on it (as they are still the same permanent).
So, important distinction for crafting: unlike the other pay mana at sorcery speed to transform abilities in standard, you exile the card as part of the cost, which means you can't get blown out in the same way as the current ones. Now, will this make crafting playable? No idea. But it is a part of the puzzle to think about.
Honestly because it can't get blown out the way other transforming cards can, craft reads to me a little bit like adventures. You kinda just get a second spell on your card
your new thing is still vulnerable to removal, so it depends on whether you can activate it for value immediately but then most of the craft cards turn into lands, so they're probably safe; even when land removal sees print, it's never at instant speed
@anchapin Oh true; good catch. At least that's open information and costs mana, so you can choose to craft when one instant-speed activation is possible and good enough, or threaten to do it when they've used their mana. Although I think most Standard decks affording to run Field of Ruin tend to have a lot of lands by the time you're getting to do a big craft, and are holding two mana up for interaction anyway.
I'm also surprised Dev didn't explicitly note that the rider added by the effect isn't temporary. It doesn't fall off the creature at end of turn; even if it survives that combat, it will still remain a Demon and turn into a card and a 4/3 flier when it dies later. (You can even run Liliana's Contract if you want to, and win by assembling a squad of Vampire Demons) If you play any free sac outlets, then you get your cake and eat it too, when the opponent doesn't block the creature, and then you sacrifice it on their next end step to upgrade it and draw more gas. Or if they point an O-Ring effect at it. (Or as Dev did say, at least guarantee the card if they use an exiling sweeper, getting two aristocrats triggers from anything you've got because of the extra body in case that's relevant.) The two-drop in this set only puts the counters on itself, but Elenda still gets hers (and Cordial Vampire exists), and that's a lot of Cruel Celebrant triggers.
Sunbird Standard looks totally playable in 5-color commander decks. It's a rock at 3, you can use any multicolor cards in your graveyard to get up to five colors, and when you Craft it you immediately get to swing in for 5 in the air then tap it for a full refund on the mana you spent for Crafting? While ramping for 5 and putting a decent-sized threat in the air? I don't know if it's playable in 4-color decks, but it does NOT seem like Magical Christmas Land to slot it in a five-color EDH deck and expect to get good value from it. The Craft ability on it makes it an exceptionally good mana rock in those decks, I feel.
Id play sunbird standard in formats that have access to the "this creature is all colors" cards as opposed to having just a 5 color dude to exile. Those tend to be worth more on the table
Love the content Dev! I want to play threefold thunderthighs with dollhouse of horrors so it comes in as a 1/1 with haste and 3 counters making 4 tokens and then attacking to make 4 more tokens. Think it would be great with tezzeret as well to find the dollhouse and thunderthighs with the + as well as binning thighs. Then if tez survives the turn we can both play and activate dollhouse on turn 5. Might be an absolute meme but I will do it anyway.
Bummer that Clavieno is not a standard card because I think it would make Orzhov sac busted. The key to the ability he grants to other vampires, in addition to the fact that he himself doesn't have to attack to trigger it, is (1) the ability does not say specify a particular death condition such as "dies in combat" or "killed by opponent", and (2) it doesn't say "until end of turn." The card just gets this death trigger ability permanently and next turn another vamp gets the ability permanently too. The best target for this card is a 1/1 vamp token because then you can just sac the damn thing to Bartolome, or to a bargain card, or just chump block with it and you're turning a low-value 1/1 into a 4/3 flyer +1 card for no additional mana. That is potentially CRAZY powerful.
Note with Veto. It's any permanent you can sacrifice. Fetchlands, treasures, or enchantments. Of course, I'm going to sacrifice creatures most of the time.

Deeproot Pilgrimage only making 1/turn aside, I agree on the play pattern - there’s a good curve shaping up of 1-2 cost merfolk that help hit land drops (Cenote Scout, Deeproot Wayfinder) and then once you get to 4 mana you can play Pilgrimage and still keep up 2 mana for a counter (or better yet to flash in Vodalian Hexcatcher, remember that card?)
in a Kumena commander/brawl deck, you can use his first ability on each of your untapped nontoken merfolk to form a board of tokens using Deeproot Pilgrimage so if you have lords out it can make a ton of strong ass tokens
