    Ford Motor Company is issuing a safety recall for 661,000 2016-19 Ford Explorer SUVs at the request of U.S. regulators for roof rail covers that may become detached while driving and create a hazard for other drivers.

    I've been mostly a Ford guy; 1st car 77' Mercury Colony Park Station Wagon, several Taurus wagons, Lincoln Town car. Today you couldn't give me a Ford product because of stupid poorly engineered engine issues, or like this video demonstrates, absolute inferior design and materials for of all things a roof rail. SMH!

    The only guy on TH-cam that will give people the part numbers and assume that someone at home is capable of performing a recall competently. People please stop talking shit on him because he is an honest guy and you think you know better than him because you put your craftsman mower together and it didn’t fall apart as you mowed your lawn. I actually fixed my 2018 roof rail covers by using a heat gun to squeeze the rear of the covers. There's a side clip (molded into the rail cover) that has to clip into the black structure underneath. It makes a loud CLACK when it locks. So the 4 christmas tree plugs Ford wants us to put in the rear are basically just reinforcing this. The little gray clips with fingers (replacements are black) aren't the main things holding the rail cover in place really.

    Ford addressed this problem on the new Explorer. They drill a bunch of holes in the roof and secure the rail from the bottom up. Now, if you need to do something with the roof rack, you have to drop the headliner. They also never sealed the holes properly so a lot of them are coming in with massive water leaks.

    Seems like many of these recalls and warranty issues stem from them trying to shave minutes off the assembly procedure by making more and more stuff snap together. Roof rails, windshield moldings, quick connect coolant Y pipe, etc. Seems like new recalls every week for silly things that had they stuck to traditional assembly procedures wouldn't have resulted in having to fix so many things after assembly.

    Built Ford Tough! (with glue and plastic body panel push tab "rivets")
    Rivets are never the right answer! They proved too unreliable building bridges and art deco high rises, because they couldn't pass repeated strength testing for the required loads, they had to start using trusted bolts in 1960 with repeated strength testing. More expensive to make bolts and nuts, but less jobsite equipment and skill to install a bolt. Those rivets required a small forge, giant air hammers, and many skilled labor to get that red hot rivet 50+++ feet into the air and in the hole without burning their hands. Back when a building or bridge was expected to have a few fatalities walking those beams. Now we have safety harness and torque wrench! 👍
    Those plastic rivets are ALWAYS broken under the bumper (however I doubt anything would be strong enough for everyone hitting a curbed sidewalk at the shopping center).
    Calling riv-nuts is insulting to real structural nuts. Good enough to mount a toy, never a good substitute for a nut. Even those welded tab grade 5(8.8) or grade 8(10.9) u-bolts that slip into the Super Duty frames can break off that tab and leave ya screwed without access to get a wrench on the backside. Easy for assembly line speed, bad for repair.
    "Right to Repair" doesn't work on unfixable designs, even dealership techs are forced to buy Ford Rotunda specialty tool kits because of the impossibility to repair the vehicle with standard mechanics tools! 😒🙄 How long did Rotunda have the only option for a Triton spark plug removal tool before Lisle, ATD, OTC, K-Tool etc. Specialist tools such to purchase when there isn't any options.

Rushed it to production before the kinks could've been engendered out. Many of them get sent from the Chicago Assembly plant directly to another plant to fix what they caught in QC.

    • @FordBossMe
      @FordBossMe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How much of this video did you watch? I mean I talk about this stuff because I really want people to pay attention to what I'm talking about in my videos and sometimes I'm concerned especially when it comes to safety stuff that people are going to attempt to do this stuff them self and they're not paying attention to the stuff I'm saying
      Yes when you look up the 21s22 safety recall it gives you block by block instructions on how to measure Where to drill and exactly where to put these Christmas Tree clips

    • @fusionvic
      @fusionvic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FordBossMe I watched your full video multiple times when it first came out and saw where you pointed to the drill points, but I was hoping someone developed a template to show the measurements and actual photos of the Christmas tree plugs. It would have helped to have the part #s written out but I see that 21S22 does list everything. What they mailed to me was just to bring the vehicle in. Not actual details or attachments. If these aren't special plugs I could go to Auto Zone and grab some generic tree plugs rather than wait 4 months for Ford to have them in stock. In the past few years, I initially fixed the issue by remolding the rear of the roof racks using a heat gun so that it grips the inside rear of the rail. There's a clip there that makes a HUGE clack sound when it engages. I noticed that the trim covers weren't molded right from the factory, hence they tended to lift even when my 18 Explorer was only a few months out of the factory.
      But doing a search for 21S22 on NHTSA's site shows the actual recall with diagrams and measurements, but with purple Christmas tree plugs. I hope these aren't the actual plugs. I have the painted silver trim covers. I know there are chromed ones and black ones as well. I wonder what Ford does for the chrome and silver painted trim covers. Just use the regular black plugs?

My tow vehicle has rain gutters so I have rain gutter towers with cross bars meant for ladders to which I mounted a double basket system.
      I saw a video of a guy with a 4x4 Suburban with those factory type roof rails and he mounted a basket on the roof to hold supplies and a spare tire. He hit a bump on a dirt road and the the basket came flying off the roof and he didn't even realize it!
