It depends on how you define waste. A lot of people would consider most of my projects a waste of wood! (Secret compartment pencil holder definitely serves no real purpose.) I hung these rings on my wall. It adds color and I like to look at it. Beauty and art for its own sake is not wasteful in my mind, but others obviously differ. One man's treasure is another man's trash.
I tried that, but without a plunge router, the initial cuts are rough. It was easier to only have to do that once and clean up the bad spot. Also, at the end of the second cut, the pine tended to break away using that method. Plus, the way I made it with the nail wasn't very accurate. But if you notice, I used MDF mostly, so I didn't "waste" a much wood. There are definitely a lot of different ways to approach this!
Steve, neat project and clever method. It was great that you showed us the Olympic rings at the beginning so we know what you're heading for, but it would have also been helpful if you'd shown us the finished jigs at the beginning too. Thanks.
Very true, lots of ways to get it done. I like the project, regardless of how many MDF trees were sacrificed to make it... XD Just playing. A plunge router is nice to have for it, but it can be done without one. Fake the plunge by loosening the collar and easing it down into the cut. Not cutting completely through is a good idea too - leaving about a 1/32 will keep everything in place and it's easy to either break it out or trim it with a knife.
Shortcut: use that circle cutting base you made for the router to cut the outside of the ring, then use it to cut the inside. Skip all of the template making, wood wasting part.
Hi Steve I love your videos and find them so helpful. I 15 and live in Ireland and you really got me into woodworking. I was wondering would you maybe able to make a video of you building a dog house or maybe a table mount for a jigsaw. Thanks
That really good Steve!! That was fun watching you go the motions of problem salving. If your ever in San Luis Obispo come to SLO BREW. Im a brewer there would love to treat you to some great suds. Levi
Great work my best teacher, but I think it will be to much easier if you just make other smaller circle cut by the router so you will get the ring you want without all this jig and going directly to the wood you want to use without the mdf , just by moving the scrow you use for you to make smaller circle inside the biggest one. Thanks from Jordan hope to meet you one day to thank you for all what you help me to start and make wood working
I got a good Idea for your next project! A Shadow box coffee table. My Sad used to make these for friend and family. The one that is in his house now has all sorts of random stuff in it. My brother has one with all sorts of knives and hunting thing that he found. What do you think about that one!! Levi
Mm you would'nt paint them first then glue together yes no maybe och well do as you please I will continue to be amazed shocked and stunned at your work, Graeme.
I'm gonna assume that you used cyanoacrylate glue to assemble everything after you were done? You didn't mention it, but I saw the little bottle. I really like how it turned out. The only thing I'd do different would be to add a gloss varnish or wax over the paint, since the tole paints always seem to look a bit dull (matte). But it's just a decoration after all.
I did not mean the rings themselves were a waste of wood. They look cool and I'd hang them on the wall of my 'woodshop' for sure. It's all the wood you cut off to make the rings that sort of makes me cringe. Guess you could save the scraps for something else.
It's not illegal to make that ? I've seen on news, some people have a big problems with IOC who own the right of the olympic logo (big sorry for my poor english :/ )
Steve, you should wear that mask of yours more. That mdf and plywood dust is not good for you. I want your to keep doing wood working for a long time. While your at it setup some better dust collection system.

I would LOVE it if the IOC came after me! Think of the publicity!
fantastic idea i want one

That looked like a serious amount of work Steve!
From just about 8 miles from the Olympic Village in the UK on the final day, Well done, enjoyed your style of presentation as usual.

Yes, I used super glue. I put satin lacquer over it. I like the non-glossy look on these.
Me too!
Hay Steve nice Jigs for making a ring toss game!!!!
Steve, u should have your own TV show!
Nice one Steve!
Eres todo un maestro!!!!! Ya te sigo desde México D.F
Muy bueno, me gusto el trabajo. Felicitaciones.
I bought myself that exact same router on Monday.

The nice thing about failures is we can usally learn something in the attempt
Some great ideas! Wouldn't it be stronger to do overlap joints instead of cutting the notches out completely?

Beautifulllllllllllllllllllllllllll!! As usual :)
Nice job but one of the few projects you have done that I would never make. Am I the only one who thought, 'so much wasted wood?'
genius!
Mm you would'nt paint them first then glue together yes no maybe och well do as you please

2 words : jasper jig
make your own, or buy one. they make cutting circles with a router extremely easy
Did you inspire the wooden rings at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan?😂

it would be cool if you made some rubberband guns!!!
great job! always enjoy your efforts.

Yup, I understood a few of those words.

Surprised this video hasn't been flagged by the Olympic committee 😂😅
You should do some type of LATHE work!...... if you have a lathe
No, Illustrator.
