I had a ride in an all-electric taxi in 1976 in Birmingham UK. It had a range of 100 miles and a top speed of 55mph. It was made by Lucas and designed by Ogle. It was far ahead of its time. It was yellow.
@@DWREV Lucas also produced hundreds of electric vans in the late 1970s and early 80s, some of which were converted to minibuses. Most were conversions of the Bedford CF or the British Leyland Sherpa. They used lead-acid batteries and a separately-excited DC motor with electronic controller. It was possible to get 100 miles but you had to drive very gently and slowly. 40 or 50 miles was more like what you would get if you drove at normal traffic speed. With lead-acid batteries the range you get is much more affected by how you drive than with lithium-ion batteries. In 1980 the only real alternative to the lead-acid battery was the nickel-cadmium battery; this was more durable and could give a somewhat longer range but was much more expensive.
Chinese high speed rail way benefits from modular scalable designs from the tracks on the ground to the station canopies above. It's not much use if one's only building a single line. Better spend that budget on consultants.

No other carmaker in the world would put money into a low volume nameplate operation like this. Geely is buying goodwil, and sticking the foot into Europe. American, Japanese , and European carmakers take notice. The Chinese want your markets.
I was in London in December and saw a lot of electric taxis. Although I was having a hard time telling what ones were electric as they look the same as the diesel ones. Can’t wait until they are all electric.
Taxis are ones of the best vehicles to go electric. No one needs a taxi to sound or look cool. Range is not a problem since they mostly going around in the city and a charger is never too far away. And no matter where the electricity is coming from, at least they lower the emission in the city. AND they kept the iconic look, brilliant idea.
The TX looks amazing btw, reminds me of the Mini designed under BMW... retains all the signature styling and details yet looks modern and retro at the same time
@antwango the BMW Mini was, is and will for ever remain a disgrace to the name of the original. A theme-park car for theme-park people. We British love our cultural icons so much we sell them to the lowest bidder.
USA will tell them in 5 years that they are security threat and thus need to throw them all away and buy American brand cars as replacement and they will agree.
American/European, Japanese, and Korean auto manufacturers are lucky that Chinese ev brands have not entered the US market yet. I am unsure how well they would be able to compete against Chinese ev brands.
I must say I think this is only really iconic to Londoners. For me a taxi is a Merc E-class, as that is what was the most used car for taxi service when I grew up.
The new Nissan X-trail runs a petrol motor to drive an electric drivetrain. This one is of similar concept, but with 130km of pure electric range. This is superb for cities.
Wake up, now the price of BYD Han ev battery is 10,000 pounds, and its capacity is three times that of tx. How do you calculate 20,000 dollars in 10 years?
it's not the only vehicle in the world built specifically to be a taxi.. there's also the Toyota JPN Taxi, overall they are similar to the London EV Taxi and designed for the exact same purpose
The electric cab is designed and made in the UK by LEVC which is owned by Geely, a Chinese company, the same company which owns Volvo. It would be uneconomic for any company to design and produce a cab which sells in relatively low numbers without support from a larger partner, British or foreign.
It’s interesting to see the capitalised “takeover” in the title, which exemplifies how media shape audience’s mind (or should I say, the prejudice) in a covert and consistent way.
Although it is certainly unique, the London Taxi is not the only purpose-built taxi. For decades, the Toyota Comfort and Nissan Crew have been the standard taxis in many Asian cities for decades and the LNG versions starting in the 1990s provided an alternative to diesel engines.
I don't know why other countries don't have taxi's like this. It's madness that disabled people can't use taxi in other countries. The little details like turning circle and everything. When a car is specifically designed for this job then it's madness to use anything else.
great, love it but why such a small range? Anyone buying an EV in 2023 is expecting at least 300 miles of range (with now 50-100miles added every year, as bettery tech progresses rapidly. There are cars for the same price that can do between 400-500 miles per charge). This taxi has less than 100 miles? Even my Fiat 500e EV from last year can do 200miles in city driving conditions and MG4 can do 300 for less than £30k.
What, 300 miles for a cap that spends its entire life in Intown? Not really needed, at least the Londoners don't think it's needed, otherwise, they will request the company to change the design. The batteries are heavy, less batteries, better handling and ride quality.
At 7:24 it briefly mentions it having a “small fuel based range extender” which maybe increases its range above what the battery can supply. It would be interesting to see how much further the car can travel using the range extender. It might also help to justify its relatively high price.

I had a ride in an all-electric taxi in 1976 in Birmingham UK. It had a range of 100 miles and a top speed of 55mph. It was made by Lucas and designed by Ogle. It was far ahead of its time. It was yellow.
Lucas was the most common name in automobile electricals in those days. Trusted.
That's amazing! Would you happen to have any photographs of it? If you do, send them to us on rev.community@dw.com.
EV cars for goodness of mother earth ... very excited
These taxis are comfortable, silent and very popular now. Some even have panoramic sunroof! All drivers are happy with them.
I really love this iconic taxi, hope Shanghai can have the same model❤
The UK chose to exclude China from any involvement in the design or construction of HS1 and HS2 ... makes absolutely no sense!
if only every country could have chinese/ japanese standard hsr
Take a look at house of Lords all those out of date people ....they need a groovy train as well to keep them happy ?😂
It makes sense for US..,
Chinese high speed rail way benefits from modular scalable designs from the tracks on the ground to the station canopies above.
It's not much use if one's only building a single line. Better spend that budget on consultants.
It certainly makes sense from economics and security point of view. We don’t want Chinese to build our infrastructure.
I Love everything related to China..absolutely Brilliant!
everything related to China , got high views
Especially their credit score !
They are absolutely beautiful almost like a limousine 🇬🇧
Great to see a veteran taxi driver embrace the electric vehicle so much - I actually met a driver of a Taxi the same as this at an EV charger near Hatfield and he was a bit disappointed with the EV range of around 60 miles but was happy in how it drove as well.
thought they normally do 200miles?that's short
@@burlhorse61 while the below information are the official figures you never really get that in the "real world " -The LEVC TX5 EREV range extended electric vehicle (EREV) is equipped with a battery capacity of 31 kWh, delivering a range of 128 km / 80 miles (NEDC). The total extended range of the TX5 EREV is 606 km or 379 miles.

@@markreed9853 whats does extended range mean?
@@burlhorse61 It means the full range with battery and petrol engine with a full tank of fuel. This vehicle has a battery AND a 1.5Ltr petrol engine so it can switch to electric-only in central London but switch to petrol when outside or when the battery is running low. It's like a hybrid BUT electric motors are powering the wheels all the time. The only car like this is the BMWi3 REX.

Kudos to Savoy Hotel for making people drive on the right side of the road.
I got into a London cab and the driver told me, Taxi divers are there own bosses, they can start when they want, stop when they want and have complete freedom. I said can you turn right at the next street 😂😂
Did he toss you out the minute you asked your question?
No other carmaker in the world would put money into a low volume nameplate operation like this.
Geely is buying goodwil, and sticking the foot into Europe. American, Japanese , and European carmakers take notice. The Chinese want your markets.
Only Chinese cars have the technological sophistication to make these EVs. Japan is out to lunch on EVs.
The car is sold as a family car in China, but sales are modest
@@yudogcome5901 interesting. At least they found a captive market. And there is some sunk cost in its development and tooling.
Employing alternate energy for transportation is a great initiative.
Great. What an experience. Made my London holiday awesome.
The most recognisable car in the *world* that I have never seen!
Great innovation!
It's very lovely to see that they've retained the "Britishness" of those taxies yet they've moved on with modernization.
Love to see it with an Austin badge.
I am surprised the UK allows this without American permission
USA will tell them in 5 years that they are security threat and thus need to throw them all away and buy American brand cars as replacement and they will agree.
Where you from?
Nonsense.
Same 😂
Uk allowed Geely to take over LEVC in 2013 as there was no other potential white knight. Also geopolitics were not so complicated then.
Like the unionjack print behind the grill. Great collaboration; always like the black cab.
Who ever makes it as long as it improves the standard of living of the country. For poor or rich people
Loved your presentation, and how you were able to keep that Iconic look.Go Great Britain!!!!!
England, Germany, France, Italy have huge motor companies but China rules the streets.
Saw a water company van made by these guys yesterday. Same front end. Really good idea.
American/European, Japanese, and Korean auto manufacturers are lucky that Chinese ev brands have not entered the US market yet. I am unsure how well they would be able to compete against Chinese ev brands.

Another iconic taxi that could use this electric upgrade is the NY yellow cab.
NY has Tesla yellow taxis
the cab is beautiful.
it's not the only vehicle in the world built specifically to be a taxi.. there's also the Toyota JPN Taxi, overall they are similar to the London EV Taxi and designed for the exact same purpose
Why can't the Brits make anything anymore?
Unions
The electric cab is designed and made in the UK by LEVC which is owned by Geely, a Chinese company, the same company which owns Volvo. It would be uneconomic for any company to design and produce a cab which sells in relatively low numbers without support from a larger partner, British or foreign.

It’s interesting to see the capitalised “takeover” in the title, which exemplifies how media shape audience’s mind (or should I say, the prejudice) in a covert and consistent way.
Yep I saw E120 KHX in Sydney about 15 yrs ago. So it was someone's privately imported car in Australia
Black taxis might have strict regulations but the 45,000 Uber drivers basically just need a pulse to drive an Uber in my experience.
They also need the ability to be rude instantaneously.

I'm learning to become a Black cap driver but I'm really worry about the price of those Electric taxis, its extremly expensive

And these cabs have to be wheelchair accessible, so they may just not have enough space under the floor.
At 7:24 it briefly mentions it having a “small fuel based range extender” which maybe increases its range above what the battery can supply. It would be interesting to see how much further the car can travel using the range extender. It might also help to justify its relatively high price.
@@challenger2205 And carrying less weight, which means using less electricity, save the planet. Noone needs to drive alone ina 2.5 tonne SUV, 1 tonne max is all that is needed.
