They mostly all are! I found all the ones I had were so talkative, interesting, knowledgeable, and really interested in why I was in London and what I hoped to see.
In my small seaport town in the States, cabbies were famous for delivering bottles of alcohol to the docks for the merchant mariners who didn’t want to or couldn’t leave their ships. I had a friend who drove a cab for years and had some great stories. He also got hired to drive rental affection ladies to and from the docks. Good times, good times!
One of the strangest things I've ever seen/heard and totaly killed it for me. I was interested Till that started then I just felt confused and uncomfortable 😂
When I saw the title of this video I was so hoping Mark would be back! Yay!!! Whenever I am in london, a black cab is my treat to myself at the end of a long day wondering the streets. They are an attraction in and of themselves. Every time I have the best chats with the drivers. And honestly, they aren't "that" expensive so long as you aren't going too far..... That said, the last time we were in London we got taken on an impromptu pub crawl. We met a couple of people in a pub who were in London on business and clearly had lots of cash. Long story short, we were treated to a lot of booze at a lot of bars all over London. At the end of the night they said they were heading back to their hotel at Euston. I said, "HEY! That's the area we are staying in, let's share a cab"..... We pull up to Euston station and I realize my mistake......I got confused by the "E"'s. We were staying in Ealing. Now THAT was an expensive cab ride. But really, for the memories, it was worth it.
About 40 years ago, after returning from Belgium on our first foreign holiday, I loaded the wife and kids into a taxi at Victoria. The boat train had arrived late. In the tense moment I said to the driver, Paddington please. I said Paddington because it was my old route home. Half way there I realised we needed to get to Kings Cross. I embarrassingly explained this to the driver. He didn't bat an eyelid. Just readjusted his route and got us there with seconds to spare. London Cabbies have always been high in my estimation.
As an aside, I remember getting in a taxi when I was a kid that had an open door space on the left for luggage. I remember worrying about our cases falling out.
You mean their prices are high, of course he won't bat an eye-lid he's on a meter and he'll drive where ever you want as he's making money, unless of course you said south of the river in which case you'd be dropped off at the side of the road pretty pronto.
Having lived in W1 for many years and had the ordeal of reading through routes of the blue book with both my dad and my brother who both became Black Cabbies, I can honestly say this vid was excellent fun. The 'haven't you got anything smaller joke' was so funny I cried. Thanks for a great vid Jooles, I may book your tour for fun when I finally return.
I got my badge in 1985 and agree completely with the comment about Mr Shearn...very fair examiner. Incidentally, I still have my 'Blue Book'...somewhere.
Another Great Watch.... I have heard the best taxi drivers are in London and the worst in Los Angeles and New York City as they take the long way for more $$$. Don't lose the cabman shelters and the taxis as there a large part of London's heritage like the cable cars are too San Francisco. Did you say "18 sugars please?" How great it is that you can make learning something new so fun. Someday I'll make it to the UK. Thanks Joolz for your time and hard "but it looks fun" work you put into your videos.....
A few of the times I’ve been to London, I’ve jumped into marks cab. He’s always been friendly and knowledgeable. And unlike some to my knowledge has never taken me on a slightly longer route. Another great video and I can’t wait to get back down to the capital
Great fun, Joolz! When I was at LAMDA in the old days before it relocated to its shiny new digs, we used to go up the road to The Hansom Cab pub after classes. There's a police station nearby, so the place was always half-and-half drama students and coppers. Too bad you couldn't go inside.
Brilliant. One of the things I wanted to do when I visited London, but never did. It'd be a shame for these icons to die out. Hope they never do. Great vid Joolz.
February 2nd 2020 i flew from Stockholm to London just to go in the “new” electric black cab and have lunch. LO18FSX was the cab and the cabby was a great guy and golfer. After taking a pic of him he said, now its your turn so now I have a picture of me moonlighting as a cabby, well we where stationary all the time but who would know! 😂 I flew back to Stockholm the same day. Funny enough, the captain on the BA flight invited me in to the cockpit after landing at Heathrow to try out his seat too so that London mini holiday of 15 hours turned out to a boys dream for and old man. 😊 Thanks for all the nice videos Joolz, been a longtime subscriber.
I LOVED cabby Mark - and how fun to see a few photos of him in his earlier days. What fun Mark was. Must say this was one of my favourites. Well done all of you. I am going to watch out for your Mark. I loved his line - " you have anything smaller" when you presented your friend's attempt to pay in Manchester. Well done.
I always use black cabs in London, there's no reason not to! The first time I was there, I was standing on a corner with a map, trying to find my way, when a cab stopped just to help me. I didn't need a ride, and he was still happy to help. Where I come from, a cab would sooner run over your foot than stop to help for nothing. London cabbies are the best.
I like the way you use Blue Skies & Sun to show your videos off to best advantage. When I went for my psychiatric nurse interview at St Clement's Hospital I was told they were looking for a community nurse, & I said Oh you won't want me as I can't drive. But I was told I could take taxis. So I took taxis. Wonderful!!!
Love this! Great video, as always! We spent all the 1960-70’s, when we visited London every Summer, in the fantastic black taxis. I loved the little pull-down seats they had, as well. Back then, hardly anyone else had cars in London & , dare I say, the whole of the UK, because mass transit was so good. Everyone had plants in their front gardens, not concrete & cars. 🙂
