If they do music, I really hope they actually explain all the terminology in a way that connects it to actual properties of the audio signal.

I predict that VR will take off in 10-20 years, and I will be the old guy who complains about how kids don't get a real childhood anymore, like in the good old days when we played on a screen with a controller.

VR is definitely here to stay! The products on the market now are good enough for early adopters and the games/experiences being released are really cool and compelling. And it isn't that hard to make games/experineces for VR compared to making other 3D modelled applications. So it really is just a matter of time.

VR has also been a prominent part of the defense industry for a while. Simulators for everything from vehicles to firearms has allowed for more realistic practice at lower cost. The creators of Oculus actually planned to market their device to the US government first before realizing the device could be viably sold on the consumer market.

I tried the game at 7:34 on the hololense. it was really fun! You can literally duck out of the way of the flying robots. They spawn 360 around you and come out of the walls and it can be really hard to find them before the shoot you.

VR might maybe be here to stay is all you get.
We know it will get better, cheaper and there will be more blockbuster games in the future. There will be no cables on your vive and oculus headset in the future and you might see more social experiences presented to you by facebook.

I for one am very excited about VR. It does bring about challenges however, like motion sickness and the baffling aspect of controling your feet with a joystick, your hands with buttons, and the lack of tactile feed back from your environnement.
I hope that they figure out a way to fix some of these issues, like requiring you to shuffle your feet and knees to move at faster speeds, the integration of motion controls and hand 3d captures and translation into the game world, as well as some way to for directional motion to not make you barf.

TH-cam's 360 View only works well on Cardboard. It is one of those cardboard compliant applications (being google's video service and all). It's not in anyway it's own platform, as there's no physical device for it other than cardboard, and I can't get it to work on PC VR. You have to manually pan the camera through set intervals, which breaks the immersion aspect.

    • @PixelOverload
      @PixelOverload 8 ปีที่แล้ว

It works fine on any (android) phone regardless of whether you're using google cardboard, just hold the phone up and move it around.

I recently got to have the VR rollercoaster experience on the superman ride at six flags new england. Part way through an error message appeared and the "camera angle" glitched out so that I was able to the entirety of the avatar that was supposed to be representing my body... which did not have a head, since I was never supposed to be able to SEE the area where the head should be. Every single person on the ride experienced the same glitch because we were all watching the same feed.
Terrible glitching aside, it was still very fun. Seeing Superman "save you" as you are "falling to your death" in the simulation was pretty sweet.

I have a Vive myself, and enough computer power to run it well. I'm looking forward to some developer coming out with a game that's open world and really, like a proper game but with VR mechanics. Yeah, you can make games like Skyrim and Fallout work in VR via an injector, but I want something built from the ground up with that experience. It won't likely be the case for a few years, as the cost of entry is just too high at the moment. You not only need an expensive headset like a Vive or Rift, but also the processing power to back it up, which isn't cheap.
I think VR is here to stay, the question is whether it becomes mainstream, or remains more niche.
Personally, I want something like the Oasis from Ready Player One (And yes, I know it was basically a means for people to ignore problems in the real world, which was distopian, in favour of a glorious, but ultimately fake life. I still want it. We can have both a better real world and awesome VR world.).

An easy way to have a player move around is to put them on a vehicle. This way they can traverse the world while also having a realistic reason why they don't keep walking. That, or things like JRPG battle grounds wherein the map and battle map are separate things. As such, you'd battle in the room, but move via your device.

I was excited to learn about the VR roller coaster and theme park. I was actually just wondering whether VR could rekindle the interest in the video arcade experience. The heavy demand of the technology puts a lot of boundaries around consumer usage, but it seems like a dedicated VR video arcade with all the required technology (headsets, surround sound, controller analogs, omni-directional treadmills, etc) in a space tailor made for the experience for individual or multiple people, would be ideally suited for the technology. It may be that currents costs are still too prohibitive, but I doubt it'll stay that way for long.

    I'm
A bit skeptical about VR. Even when I use the newer ones, the games don't play well. Every time I die it seems like its because of some error of the control, rather than something in the game. Or my characters would vaguely drift to
    One side.
I hope to be proven wrong, otherwise it might be like that meme "stop trying to make VR happen. It's not gonna happen."

I'm cautiously optimistic about virtual reality. the problem I see with it is: it's inherently limited to first person perspective and maybe third person perspective games. imagine what a VR Madden would look like; you're in first person perspective of whoever is carrying the ball, if you're on offense but how do you do the defense? and how do you transition from a defensive position, which would probably be the classic top down view to a first person view upon an interception, without drawing the player and make them wonder where is the end zone? Now ask yourself how would do VR with baseball or soccer and you'll see how difficult it would be to do traditional sports games in VR.
What about VR Mario, DOTA, Tetris, or Crusader Kings? would VR help these games in any way? are these games even possible to do in VR?
now you can start seeing the problem from a design perspective and if they can address some of these issues, VR has a hope. if not I'll just be another gimmick peripheral

Intel dropping their tick-tock cycle implies that Moore's Law may finally be at an end. Its funny that happened right about the time the VR resurgence happened; the timing was terrible. VR needs smaller, more powerful processors to succeed. The end of Moore's Law will most likely be the death of modern VR.

Home Vr, I think, is a dead end. unless they develop something like .hack// or Sword Art Online, Vr at home will require large and very much safe areas to operate.
Roller coasters and virtual reality arenas like what we saw in the video will be where it will succeed the most.
Augmented reality will, I think, work a lot better at home and has the additional bonus of having practical uses. It can also be used with more traditional means. It CAN supplement, for instance, traditional screens.

To me, virtual reality games will have succeeded when certain games for it are mainstream and have storylines like other types of video games. I want a virtual reality game to be the next Bioshock, not just a gimmick that will be used by consumers for five minutes before they forget about it and leave it unused for years. I really want virtual reality to be respected, so it would be a shame for it to just be a gimmick.
