    As someone who is in his 20s and has played all Pokemon games and has a living Pokedex, it does me joy to know that the series I love is culturally recognized enough to be used for educational purposes on a TH-cam channel

    • @angeldude101
      @angeldude101 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have a living dex? And they're all just frozen in time waiting to be set free just so you could fill your collection? You're no better than the antagonist.

    • @DeathofHeavens
      @DeathofHeavens 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      no worries there probzbly working in his berry field in the pokepalago

    • @DuranmanX
      @DuranmanX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +angeldude101 How else am I going to fill the Pokedex, which is the sole task required in every Pokemon game
      I mean, with Poke Pelago, living dexes are really just heavily expanded zoos
      and the San Diego Zoo isn't the work of a nefarious mastermind
      getting animals to fight each other in combat however might be

    • @angeldude101
      @angeldude101 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's funny that Pelago was added in just this game, presumably to make make the player feel a little less guilty about not using all their pokemon.

    • @DuranmanX
      @DuranmanX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you are supposed to have 720 Pokemon as of ORAS, and 801 Pokemon as of Sun and Moon
      some more astute gamers might have multiple formes and genders of Pokemon, but it's not required

    I remeber when Pokemon red/blue first came out when I was like 10 and it was such a huge phenomen, my private school thought it was satanic, so they would take our pokemon cards from us when we brought them to school. I've still yet to get my 1st edition charizard back.

    • @DuranmanX
      @DuranmanX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      they should tell them about Shin Megami Tensei
      that game is as literal satanic as you can get, has similar features to Pokemon, and came out nearly a decade earlier

      I had my cards taken by teachers twice in one year (returned at the end of the day). One time, a teacher confiscated my cards and she happened upon a Machop from the Base Set. Another teacher walked by and said "I bet I could sell that for $50 bucks"... I was laughing my head off inside and I almost had the urge to say "good luck with that".

    Pokémon Gen 1: 151
    Gen 2: 251
    Gen 3: 386
    Gen 4: 493
    Gen 5: 649
    Gen 6: 721
    Gen 7: 802
    However, these numbers are a little misleading, due to pokémon with the same dex number but different typing. Such as Wormadam and Oricorio. And also the Alolan forms of some Gen1 pokémon. If they were all given their own entries, the total list would be around 851.

  • @aliensinnoh1
    @aliensinnoh1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    Pokemon Go served it's purpose on me. I stopped having basically anything to do with Pokemon after playing Pokemon Black version, as I had simply become bored of it and felt I was outgrowing it. However, Pokemon Go got me more interested in Pokemon again, to the point where I went back and replayed Platinum, starting watching the anime again (I binged all of XY to catch up), and am now planning on getting a 2ds so I can play Sun & Moon, as well as the 6th gen games (X&Y) I missed and Omega Rub or Alpha Sapphire, the remakes in my favorite region: Hoenn.

    • @thepiemaster477
      @thepiemaster477 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      William Stockhecker As a long time fan, you probably shouldn't bother with Gen VI. X and Y was mediocre and ORAS didn't quite top the original. You should probably skip right to Sun and Moon unless you simply *HAVE TO* have more Pokémon.

    • @aliensinnoh1
      @aliensinnoh1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ThePieMaster I loved the XY anime so much, it feels weird to just skip the games it took place in. Plus it would be then only generation I've missed. I've played Gold, Leaf Green, Fire Red, Emerald, Diamond, Platinum, Heart Gold, and Black (as well as 2 of the Mystery Dungeons and Shadows of Almia). Everyone had so much character in the Anime. Clemont, Serena, Korrina, Diantha, Tierno, Shauna, Trevor, Wulfirc, Viola, Grant, Malva, Lysandre, all of them. I feel attached to these characters, so I feel it would enhance my gameplay experience. I also really enjoyed all the gen 6 Pokemon from what I saw in the anime.

    • @awyff
      @awyff 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would definitely recommend playing Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire. The first game I ever played was Ruby, and ThePieMaster is right in saying that the original can never be topped.. but to return a decade later and play it again on the 3DS was so awesome and reminiscent!!!!

    • @thepiemaster477
      @thepiemaster477 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      William Stockhecker The thing about X and Y is that a majority of the characters you mentioned have significantly less personality in the games than in the anime. "Hi, I'm the gym leader, let's fight. Oh, you're powerful, here's my gym badge. Good luck on your adventure that I won't see you again for." - Basically every Gym Leader in that game

    • @thepiemaster477
      @thepiemaster477 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Cura Kira Coren You are correct, though only 801 are actually obtainable, since Marshadow hasn't been distributed yet. And you can't even get all 801 of those Pokémon together yet since only about 300-400 are obtainable across Sun and Moon.

    I like Pokemon because of the large customizable aspect of the game in picking you team of six from hundreds of different creatures. It is fun because you can play the game many times and have completely different experiences depending on what Pokemon are on your team. The ability to trade and battle with friends is also fun.

  • @shingshongshamalama
    @shingshongshamalama 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's not just how commercially and financially successful the Pokémon franchise is as a business model. It's how _positive_ it is. The basic central tenets of the entire series are all about having fun, enjoying life, and being nice to each other. Pokémon is a franchise that constantly gives people positive goals and positive ideals to strive towards. It's optimistic and light-hearted, even when it makes the occasional subtle or not-so-subtle references towards much darker and more serious real world issues. I think that's a huge part of why it's so universally accepted and praised, and why it's so accessible to so many people.

    Official respect for this channel and also Pokemon now given. Before this video I was 'meh' about the channel, now I have loads of respect for the process and ability of this channel to convey some well informed information about gaming. Also, I was 1 year too old for the initial pokemon craze/fad that hit my school as a kid and I brushed it aside as "just another dumb thing" that we all get barraged with by media targeted to us as kids.... but pokemon has had a level of 'staying power' that i didn't understand until this video put things in context for me. Thanks guys!

    From what I've seen, Pokémon Go has had mostly negative social consequences. I visited Angel Island this summer and there was an extended family touring the island. The children were all playing Pokémon Go and one told his mother "I don't want to look at a stupid museum, I want to catch Pokémon. Those kids were frowning every time I saw them, even when they were playing. They also fought each other over a charger. In one of my college classes, the syllabus mentioned specifically to not play the game during class.

    The Fate series does a similar thing, but on a much smaller scale. The game has three story lines and each story line now has it's own tv show (Fate/Stay night, Fate/Zero, and Fate/Unlimited Blade Works). There are also spin-offs of the TV show and at least one movie. Fate doesn't have card games, though.

    ...sigh... how many people watching this are too young to remember when Pokémon was big? (If you say "but Pokemon is big," you don't remember.)
    I just remember (before Go brought it back), seeing a comic where Pikachu was seen among more recent cartoon characters, and someone commented "who's the yellow rat?" I will never feel older than I felt that day...

    The 640-entry national dex really shows the age of this script and dated it to Gen. V, despite the video showing Rowlet, a Gen. VII starter. During the production of this show the national dex have 721 entries.

    I've always lucked out because my sister and I both love pokemon, but have different tastes in almost every topic. So we never had a problem with getting from the other game. I got Diamond, she got Pearl. I got SS, she got HG. I got Y, she got X, ect. We both got Platinum, ect. She's got Sun, I'm getting Moon.

      Try the originals. I never played past gen 4 - Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. The original games are really something to experience if you want to understand why kids went nuts back in the 90s. (There's tons of glitches and crappy graphics tho.)

    To my knowledge, the only thing he missed was the Pixelmon mod for Minecraft, though obviously not made by the original company. Thousands of people play that too. I've played all of the original format games, up to the GBA versions, as well as the two for n64, the rescue squad, and the card one, also fro gba, I think. I also saw a bit of the first tv series. I loved it, back in the day. My favorites are still Rapidash, and Sableye.

    I owned pokémon blue as a kid and went to visit my dad one summer. His neighbor had a kid about my age who had pokémon red. His mom said he had to do something and I made all the trade evolutions to "catch em all" while he was away. I think it was like 354 at the time, not sure. I just had to get that off my chest.
