    the rules of minesweeper? Really? Well, the number in the square is the number of mines in the 8 squares around it, and your job is to find all the bombs on the map using those numbers without blowing any of them up. That's about it.

    • @MasterGeekMX
      @MasterGeekMX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is a much easier version: hexmines, in wich each cell is an hexagon instead of an square. This gives only 6 possible bombs around instead of eight.

    • @Malidictus
      @Malidictus 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah, I still don't understand why people find the rules of Minesweeper difficult to grasp. There's literally one single rule, as outlined above. Some versions of Minesweeper may add features like question marks or automate part of the process (such as auto-opening safe guesses), but those are the rules. A number tells you how many mines are in the squares immediately surrounding it. Open all non-mine squares to win.

      @alexandreboutaudvalarini5638 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You would be surprised how many people never knew that. I had a friend who liked to play it as a meditative exercise without knowing the rules or thinking about it in high school. She had been playing for 2 years when I taught her.

    Mine Sweeper's rules are pretty simple. You click on a square and if it shows a number, that's how many mines there are around it. Click on a mine and you loose. The aim is to click on every non mind square using logic and probability to determine where the mines are.

    • @justunderreality

    I don't know if this first point is true for older versions, but the first rule you'll find is that the first click you make is never a mine. The second rule is that, if you click a square with no adjacent mines, adjacent including the 8 spaces around it, it will then uncover the 4 spaces around it, which will then each uncover the 3 remaining spaces around them if they're not adjacent to mines, and so forth. Lastly, if an uncovered space is adjacent to one or more mines, it will display a number representing how many mines it's adjacent to. From there it's mostly logic and pattern recognition, though there will be situations where you'll probably have to guess.

      Being British I often use the American 'Zee' for things like 'Dragonball Z' because 'Dragonball Zed' just sounds really weird, after all the 'Zee' is more part of the title itself than a reading of 'Z'. I guess you guys don't so something similar when talking about British things (okay, Dragonball isn't American, but you know what i mean)?

  • @Disthron

    I gravitated towards PC because it had it's own screen, and back in the day if I wanted to play my console I had to fight for time on the TV. Also, demo's and Shareware was a thing back then, witch was way cheaper than having to buy a full priced game.
    So, this was nice and all, but it feels like a pretty token effort. I particularly thought that Myst wasn't the necessarily the best example of the adventure game genre.

    • @Disthron
      @Disthron 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Justen1980 At this stage, I'm over the idea of proprietary hard ware. I want to play the games I want to play and I don't want to have to buy several high priced peaces of hardware to play them. So I stuck with PC, it gives you the most bang for your buck.

    • @Justen1980
      @Justen1980 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disthron I miss my Total War and Red Orchestra series but the games I'm into are more or less available on my xbone. I used to spend more time makin custom maps for Half Life than actually playin games... I kinda long to re-enter the modding hobby...

    • @Xeno426
      @Xeno426 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, there have been far more polished examples of adventure games since Myst, but in many respects it set a new bar and is still recognizable, which is probably why it was chosen.
      Personally, I prefer PC gaming thanks to modding (you've not played an Elder Scrolls game until you've seen some of the amazing mods for it, holy cow) and the genre of games available. I really enjoy strategy games (not just RTS, but RTT and grand strategy), flight simulators (proper ones, not arcade stuff like Ace Combat), plus the mouse+keyboard is just better for FPS games.
      Heck, thanks to Steam, PC is finally getting a nice selection of fighters and platformers, genres that PCs usually don't have much in the way of. The fact the XBox controllers work on PC with little to no driver downloads makes it even easier to enjoy genres like fighters. It's just really annoying when devs/publishers release very poor ports, like what WB games has been doing. The previous Batman games ran fine, so WTH is with Knight, WB?

    • @thesquishedelf1301
      @thesquishedelf1301 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Neopets, Kongregate and Newgrounds, sure. Back in the late '00s and early '10s, there were a lot of competitors and flash gaming was much more lucrative. Eg. Armor Games and NotDoppler, which in those days were well-designed hubs of very high quality completely free flash games, and have since devolved into steaming piles of Pay to Win Javascript trash, obnoxious ads and cheap knock-off games that look like their art was made and directed by a 7 year old. Not to mention schools becoming more tech-savvy and starting to block these sites properly so kids can't use 'em. The Golden Age of Flash gaming is over, sadly. Of course this is just my experience, I don't know how well it's surviving in the "hide it from your boss while you're in the office" market, but it has a big competitor in Mobile Games. Even Nitrome, objectively one of the more high quality flash game development studios, has been trying to move to mobile.

      Yeah the floppy drive was slow so it got nicknamed the Hippo drive. Still as an upgrade from the tapes it was much faster. My Mom tried to buy me the Basic tutorial software so I could learn Basic the lady handed her a box that said single floppy disc. She tried to explain to the clerk that it was the wrong thing but the clerk insisted it was right so I got a floppy disc drive for the price of a tutorial program. It was roughly the size of a loaf of bread and had 1 floppy disk with it.

    Dune 2 was one of my first proper favorite computer games. There was also Commander Keen, Sink Sub, Scorched Earth, that game with the submarine that you control to explore and collect stuff, upgrade your torpedoes, avoid and/or kill dangerous critters, try not to run out of air, and often use a mini robo-sub to get into places the main sub can't. There were plenty of other games on the computer back then too. (Command and Conquer, and some educational games.)
    I think that "Crash Course" is a great name for these videos, as they tend to be pretty condensed, and lack details, but *try* to stick to essential concepts. Sometimes, I feel that these videos are too short.

    How the heck could you not mention Roberta Williams and Kings Quest from Sierra which by all accounts had a much greater impact on driving hardware sales of Sound Card/Videocard upgrades and optical drives then Myst.

      The first game I got on CD-ROM was King's Quest 6. And thanks to the recent humble bundle sale, I just bought a huge collection of Sierra games on Steam for $20. The King's Quest games alone would make a good crash course in video game history on the PC.

    The rules of mine sweeper is simple. The number you get when you turn over a tile indicates how many mines are in proximity to that tile. So if there is a 1 then there is 1 mine around that tile. You have use deductive reasoning (and sometimes a bit of luck) to figure out where the mines are based on this proximity detection system.

      The point is that Myst is in no way the origin of the genre or even terribly influential in it. It was widely regarded by adventure game enthusiasts at the time as gimmicky and shallow, and to have it placed as an exemplar is simply baffling.

    • @FilledCircle
      @FilledCircle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure why this is a point of contention. In America the letter Z is zee. The computer uses the letter "Z" not the word or sound "zed." So an American should have the right to make whatever sound that symbol means for him/her. And for the most part, America's differences in spelling stem from a hatred for a nation that oppressed and went to war with them. I don't think you can blame the US for that. Especially modern citizens who didn't have a say in the matter.
      Do you call the PC mod/game "Day Z," Day zee or day zed? What about the famous book "World War Z"
      Day Z was designed by a New Zealander, and yet American gamers call it Day Zee. World War Z was written by an American, but in other countries literary figures, teachers and speakers call it World War Zed.

    • @eelsemaj99
      @eelsemaj99 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +FilledCircle as a Brit, I know that we say zee when referring to American things eg jay z and world war z, because that's what they're called. It's an acceptable mistake to make, calling it the zee ex, as is jay zed. Sometimes pronunciation doesn't matter, such as the pronunciation of zebra, but it bugs many Brits to see that consideration not being taken into account, as we do to American spelling and pronunciation, eg we write Pearl Harbor, even though we normally spell that word with a U. I think that's the reason for the controversy

      i think its fine to play wherever you want. you can have a ps4 and a pc like i do. i use the ps4 for exclusives like the last of us and a pc for everything else.
      as for somethings that pc has that consoles dont have:
      •modding- but it seems that xbox has it now but only with fallout.
      •emulators which you can play ps2, ps1, gamecube, gameboy, android emulation, n64, ds 3ds soon.
      • multiple monitors from one graphics card.
      •lots more underated exclusives games
      •different platforms, dont like steam? go to gog.
      •mouse and keyboard or controller choice. although you can bypass this with a xim4 on console which costs 140 or so but some consider this cheating. dont really know.
      •used to be 1440p and 4k gaming but thay looks like it might change altought i doubt the psr pro will play that good at 4k.
      and you know even though i didnt finish reading your comment until later which made me realize you actually were praising pc, i will still post this so others can see why pc is great for gaming but that people should play where the want.

      Nah, it should have been broken up into 3 videos, each covering one Epoch. The 80's, the 90's, and the 2000s, then a final one wrapping things up with VR and Steam. 4 vids to the consoles few dozen is fair, and tbh, it'dve covered the big rivalries. The IBM PCs vs the C64 in the 80s, the rise of FPS and RTS, along with the fight between Nvidia and 3DFX in the 90s, MMOs and MOBAs in the 2000s, and the AMD/Intel debacle and how it impacted the industry ( it did, believe it or not ), and then wrap up with Steam and how it's massively changed things and what VR is about to do to everyone's eyeballs ( and wallets ). More importantly, emphasized how Consoles do get hand-me-down hardware and how that impacts the decisions made making games in the modern age, how that changes what developers focus on and the way they implement things.
      It won't happen, that's too much to ask, not even from a depth point of view but from an understanding point of view.
      God I wish TekSyndicate hadn't imploded...they could have done this way better.

    • @nathanbrown8680
      @nathanbrown8680 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For a while they were also a lot easier to develop for because there was only one architecture per brand and Windows was Windows. Consoles are also better at innovating input devices. If something ships with the console (like the wii's control wands) game developers can design for it and know people have the devices unless the whole console flops. The vicious cycle of lack of applications support preventing people from buying hardware that prevents people from writing support for that hardware is easier to break in consoles.
      But, yeah, any "computer" without a full keyboard is kind of crippled for non-gaming applications and requires really tortuous UI for some game genres.

      I posted this elsewhere... but I might as well put it here too:
      It boils down to one question for me: why would I spend excessive money to buy an inferior system that allows only one input method while not allowing (without a hack) any other media or development? Personally, there is no drawback for PC... you have adaptability and personalization as well as power... all for less of a price tag.
      That said, the people shouting "PC MASTER RACE!" are idiots that want a voice just to hear themselves. Consoles... especially Nintendo... try to do interesting things, and I respect that. But PC will always be where game changing developments are born and will die.

      Technically yes, but the traditional division amongst video games (implicitly computer-generated video) is into console games and computer games (implicitly personal computer). The rules of minesweeper are simple. You start by left clicking any square. That square will either show a number, or it will be empty and it will open up a larger area with numbers around its perimeter. If a square has a number in it, then there are that many mines around it. Through deductive reasoning, you must determine where the mines are located. You can mark a square with a flag by right clicking if you believe there is a mine there. The game is won by correctly flagging all of the mines or by clearing all other squares. Best of luck to you, and happy minesweeping.

    Minesweeper is easy. The number tells you how many mines are next to the square. use that information over several squares and you can deduce the location of a mine. If a square already has the right number of mines bordering it you can safely reveal all the non-mined squares bordering the fully saturated square. Repeat until t he board is fully clear.

    Minesweeper is a computer version of Russian roulette. Each player get their own turn to select a tile on the screen to click,. If the tile contains a mine,, the game ends and the player that clicked the tile is shamed by all the others. If they successfully click on a right tile, one or many numbered tiles will appear, indicating the numbers mines adjacent to itself, this will give a hint to the next player increasing their odds of clicking on a good tile up to 100%. Right clicking will pose a flag to indicate that one believes to contain a mine. This is often used to confuse other players by using their trust against them, making them click on a tile that contains a mine. Dependent on the version of minesweeper, double clicking on a tile with a number of flagged adjacent tiles equal to the number on the itself will result in opening all the tiles nearby that are not flagged. This method is used so that the player can in a single move, remove multiple tiles with guaranteed safeness in a single turn. On older versions of Minesweeper, it is possible to click on a mine as the first click, which is no longer possible in newer versions. If all the non-mine tiles are cleared , the player to clear the last tile is declared the winner. Note, Minesweeper is a highly graphical game, and for that reason, it is recommended to have at least a GPU as powerful as the GTX-1080 to achieve a frame rate of 120 fps, which is highly recommended by expert players. Playing Minesweeper at 30fps is like Playing CS:Go on 10 fps, it can be done, just NOT RECOMMENDED.

    I never knew how to play Minesweeper until I saw an episode of Numb3rs where Charlie Epps explained the rules: "You've got to clear the mines without blowing any up. Each time you clear a square, a numerical value is revealed. That number tells you exactly how many squares containing mines are directly adjacent to that square. This allows you to predict where the next mine will be located and then the more boxes revealed the more accurately one can predict the location of the mines." Afterwards, I quickly became an expert player.

    When you click on the minefield, you will first expose free space. The numbers on the sides show how many bombs are adjacent to the square that the specific number is on. This includes those on the edges and those in the corners. Using math (as well as a healthy dose of guesswork) you figure out where the mines are and right-click on them. If you know a space is safe, left click on it. Keep following these rules until you've either landed on a mine or exposed all of them.
