    I’m afraid you’ve got a small error in there Raphael. Carl Perkins wrote and recorded “Blue Suede Shoes” after overhearing a man at a show complaining that his dance partner stepped on his shoes. Elvis’s version is a (more successful) cover. Elvis occasionally wore blue suede shoes on stage in reference to the song, not the other way around.

    Sartorial talks did a great video on somewhat bold shoes recently.

    • @gentlemansgazette
      @gentlemansgazette  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sartorial talks is a great youtube channel. As the name implies, there is a lot of talking, and fewer visuals. We like to show more, not just tell. Others like to listen more. The more channels about classic men's clothing are out there, the more people will learn about it, so we consider that a good thing!

    • @Jim58223
      @Jim58223 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gentlemansgazette Yea, I watch both your channels, as well as Kirby Allison, He spoke style and The armoury channel. Just thought I'd mention it since they also did a similar topic.

    • @gentlemansgazette
      @gentlemansgazette  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may also want to check out Simon Crompton. What would you say is the strength and weakness of each channel. If you had to rank them overall, what would by your ranking and why?

    • @Jim58223
      @Jim58223 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@gentlemansgazette Ah yes I forgot to mention him too, mostly follow him on Insta as he doesn't post as often to TH-cam. As for the strengths and weakness of each channel I'd say sartorial talks covers the very high end bespoke of men's style that not many channels cover, and the long format talks are relaxing, the weakness would also be that they are much longer and harder to consume, thus they do not post as often. Also the lack of the plethora of visual examples like gentlemen's gazette does. Kirby Allison does very good documentary style videos going to the actual maker, which again not many channels do. And he is the go to place for shoe videos. But he doesn't have as much a variety as Gentleman's gazette. He Spoke Style I enjoy because of his shorter format videos which he posts quiet often, and he also gives a lot of examples which he models. Moreover, he cover's somewhat modern casual stuff as well. But it can get repetitive sometimes, and again isn't as detailed as gentleman's gazette. Gentleman's Gazette's strong points is that they're all encompassing, very detailed and provide a multitude of outfit ideas and examples as well as outfits not to wear. We can get an idea of what is good, but not what is bad from the other channels but you guys cover both. For your weakness I'd say that you don't show the behind the scenes process of makers like Kirby does or go to the makers/review higher end stuff, and there aren't many casual conversational videos like sartorial talks does. But your viewers may not want this. Also a big thing missing from your channel is covering high end bespoke makers, I personally would love to see reviews of higher end bespoke shoes or suits. As for ranking that's hard to say as each channel caters to a certain aspect/format and audience. As for the most informative channel it would be you guys. If I did have to rank I'd say you guys and sartorial talks are tied for first place, Kirby second-mainly due to his tour of specific makers, third He spoke style-great cinematography and semi formal stuff. I'm interested to hear what other's might think and their rankings. Please feel free to chime in anyone. I don't know if you'll read all this, sorry kind of got lengthy.

    The only "flashy" shoes that I find very nice are the ones from Corthay. They come in many loud colors and they are just awesome. There are even obes with pibk or yellow satin laces. There are also others usualy from bespoke shoemakers that are both bold but very elegant and high quality.

They're incredibly comfortable, pair well with almost everything in my wardrobe, and most certainly unique. Do you always wear suits? You mention casual clothes sometimes, what kinda clothes do you wear every day when not doing much such as going for a walk or going to the super market?
    And what is the part of the world you live in like? Do lots of other people wear suits too? I live in New Zealand and apart from some of the teachers or student aids at my polytech I'm the only one who wears suity clothing except for my good friend who wears suits with me sometimes which is so much fun
    I love this channel by the way, it's the best classic men's stuff channel I've found and I've learnt a lot from you guys about this stuff, your channel is also part of the reason I started wearing suity clothes finally, I wanted to since I was a young child and after watching you guys and seeing how you just love it so you wear it gave me confidence just to be myself and wear clothes I love and it's an amazing feeling to be me for once

      Yeah, wearing good clothes used to be the norm about 60 years ago. Back then almost everyone wore hats and leather shoes. Then inflation made society more poor, so it became normal to wear t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers, because it costs less to produce. For casual clothes there are other youtube channels that help with that. "Real Men Real Style" covers nice casual clothes.

    I grew up in the UK early 70´s . Boots were standard footwear as they lasted so long and were cheap ( now the same manufacturers have done the opposite ) .
    I hated getting new shoes due to the school playground tradition of ‘ Christening ‘ , where everyone would tread of the new shoes until they were well broken in and scratched . Odd thing that i think only existed in the UK 70´s / 80´s ... nowadays i wear oxfords , chelseas or monkstraps with no fear of them getting ruined first day

    I guess my love for classic menswear actually started with a pair of Doc Martens spectators in brown and white. It was after I bought these shoes that I realised that I didn't own anything to wear them with. Was able to change that thanks to YT and channels like the Gentleman's Gazette... Now, with that being said, a pair of "classic" spectators (tan leather on off white canvas, linen or suede) will always look great with a cream/sandcoloured linen suit or a seersucker suit, or with a seersucker pants/navy blazer combo, and that's a hill I'm willing to die on.
    Speaking of suede, "Blue Suede Shoes" might be associated with Elvis, but it was originally a Carl Perkins song, and allegedly based on a lockerroom exchange before a night on the town that Johnny Cash witnessed when he was stationed overseas.

    Imho the best type of shoe to experiment with is the belgian loafer. I'm not a fan of boat shoes, but I see the appeal of an inexpensive and classic way to incorporate more colour. Suede especially in a high velvet-like quality or velvet itself are great in all sorts of colours. One point I strongly disagree with is the bashing of purple. I've seen some high-end shoes in purple which looked regal and they wouldn't be too hard to combine. A gray suit and a white shirt allow any colour for footwear. A yellow or green tie would be perfect. In fact black shoes are rather hard to combine with a wardrobe of someone who likes to wear suits, but isn't supposed to. For versatilty I'd crown chocolate brown and burgundy.

    You're misusing the word "invest". Things that are expected to wear out are purchases, not investments. An investment is something that you expect to make a profit on.

      He is not misusing the word "invest". You are being picky for no reason but your ego. It's very common to use the word "invest" to refer to high priced items. What you are talking about is the formal definition of the word. But there is also the informal definition, straight out of the dictionary itself: (invest in) informal - buy (something) whose usefulness will repay the cost. That's from a dictionary.

    Although I am certain that you have covered this at some point, I have to ask because I need nomenclature.
    What is the small flat heel corner called? And, what is it for? Intuitively it seems to be a flat surface that prevents heel damage when you cross your legs at the ankle.

    At 21:14 did Raphael avoid saying 'We live in a society'? It just seems funnily close to that line.

    I really like the fact that you pointed out how what we percieve as manly is 100% a society thing, as much as i love suits and classic gentleman style i dont support the idea that "men should dress manly" because that concept changes over time, so its a useless statement

    Is it OK to wear quarter brogues with semi formal evening attire? What about a stroller suit?

    • @gentlemansgazette
      @gentlemansgazette  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In short: if the most formal style of shoe currently in your collection is a black quarter-brogued oxford, it could likely work in a pinch for a tuxedo or stroller suit (assuming that it's neat and well-polished). We wouldn't recommend it for white tie or formal morning dress, however--and if you're able to find a good pair of black patent or calf oxfords without broguing, those would be better still. For more info, consult our Black Tie Guide. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      @@gentlemansgazette thank you Preston for replying! Currently my most formal shoe is the black Oxford quarter brogue. I polish the toe as much as I can though. You're a great jazz performer, I'm following your steps.

      Easiest is matching the trousers, so you don't have to bother matching the leathers.
