  • We're back in Albania! It's been two years since our last visit to this incredible country and we've got plenty of exciting adventures awaiting us here.
    00:10 - Leaving Macedonia
    02:30 - Arrive in Albania
    03:24 - Arrive in Korcë
    06:02 - Lake Prespa
    10:27 - Off-Roading
11:31 - Arrive in Korcë Day Two
We reluctantly left Macedonia, a country that left a permanent imprint on our lives. A country with beautiful rugged mountains and miles of unspoiled nature. A country with the most hospitable and welcoming people we'd encountered.
However, we were excited too, because Albania had also left these same imprints on our memories from our previous visit there two years ago.
In this episode we cross the border and arrive at a city in the South East of Albania; Korcë. We delve in to local byrek, known to be the best in the country and discover a natural beauty spot on the edges of Lake Prespa. This is not to be missed!

    A little about us...
We’re Lucy and Ben, two photographers from Cornwall, UK who’ve been living and travelling in our self-converted LDV Convoy camper van for the best part of four years. We’ve travelled all across Europe from West to East documenting our encounters with the people we meet as well as our own travels and adventures. We embrace the ethos of slow travel and minimal living, generally spending between 2 and 8 weeks in each country, getting to know each culture, cuisine and people as though we were locals ourselves as well as hiking, wild swimming and camping as we go.
We are currently on our third 7 month long road trip, travelling through the Balkans for the second time beginning in the French Alps and venturing as far East as Turkey, visiting 13 countries in between.
Our plan was simple: visit every country in Europe in our rusty tin can of a van. So far we’ve made it to 28 countries, travelling as far West as Portugal and as far East as Ukraine, having all sorts of crazy adventures in between.
Our main motivation for our travels is to capture photos and create documentary projects, so our van is primarily a vessel for our photography. We tend to focus on topics such as nomadism, traditional ways of life, the effects of recent political events and the difficulties of living in remote rural areas as well as documenting our own adventures and lifestyle on our various social channels.
We’ve had so many memorable experiences on our travels, and our photo documentary projects have given us an intimate insight into the lives of many different people and brought us together as friends.
We've visited the folk living in one of the most remote corners of Europe in the Albanian Alps, experienced the culture and traditions of the horsemen in the Hortóbagy National Park, and experienced life with Roma gypsies in their village in Romania, and there's still so much more to explore...

Your video just popped up on my google discover. What a pleasure it was to watch (even though it's nearly 2am in the uk) looking forward to your next video of Albania and binge watching all your previous travels videos. I am very lucky to be married to an Albanian and getting to spend so much time in beautiful Albania, cant wait to show your videos to my mother-in-law when I'm next there. I just cried watching this cos I miss my home country so so much!! We are the ones with the biggest hearts ♥️ lovely video and it’s very true they do not get the concept of being vegetarian cos I’m myself but back home no one gets me they always say I’m getting ill if I don’t eat meat or fish

We have been to Sarandë and Vlorë on our last trip to Albania, we filmed some videos there too, it was amazing! What a beautiful coastline Albania has, we explored it all last time but this time we decided to stick inland and see the beauty of the mountains ❤️

smashed it guys, i visited Albania several years ago now whilst i was in Corfu, only spent a day there but was a real eye opener. The town we sailed to which the name of has escaped me was extraordinary many new buildings a lot of them had been partially destroyed by putting chains around the pillars and removing them with JCBs and the like, so there was a lot whilst still standing where totally unusable. We did go on a coach excursion which took us to some amazing places, but the are decades behind the rest of the world, but slowly catching up. Amazing place to explore. as i was watching you walking around the Bizarre i had google street view open on my other screen walking around with you LOL. keep up the great work.

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh beautiful, what an interesting story! We’ve also been to Vlore, spent a bit of time there on one of Albania’s last remaining wild beaches. Balkan people have a habit of destroying things or burying them with concrete, such as in Bulgaria. Terrible shame, but the nature in these countries, particularly Albania is unparalleled! We’ve never made it over to Corfu though as there weren’t any ferries sailing during the winter. Thanks for watching!

Two years ago, when the Roma (Gypsy) Taxi driver in Bucharest to my amazement almost understood my conversation with my wife in the native tongue of Rajasthan, a north western state in India, I decided to spend time on this and find out how.
According to records, Roma left north west Indian around 1050. From no other part of India did Roma leave. They were the tired soldiers of the army of great Rajput King Prithviraj Chauhan who fought 17 wars with Mohammed Ghauri.
Most Roma belong to fine Rajput warrior caste and others were farmers called Jat who also were in the army. While the great king was keen on continuing battles, many soldiers did not want to fight more wars and stayed at home. For a Rajput staying at home during war was a stigma. Even women folk taunted them for staying home at the time of battles.
Therefore, they left their native land in groups. Some went west and are called Gypsies or Roma now and some went down to south India where they still are in their red and yellow colour clothes and huge moustache. You can know about them on Google by clicking "Lambada in south India".
I was further shocked again when our Gypsy (Lambada) maid understood a Hungarian Roma lady talking in Romani on BBC program on TV while I read the English captions. Apparently the two ladies 9000 miles away spoke similar tongues prevailant about 1000 years ago at their place or origin.
On the way to west, Roma took words from Persian like bibi and many from other tongues including Greek (drost for road) and Armenian. Also, few joined them on the way from Sindh, another Indian province. They are still called Sinti within Roma and words like laklo, lakli, chavo are from Sindhi.
They somehow lost their last names of fine Rajput warrior clans. Roma may try to find surnames like Sisodia, Chauhan, Shekhawat, Nainavat Rathore, etc. But they kept first Indian names until 18th century like Amos Bihari and his daughter Panna Cinka of Hungary, both great musicians, Panna and Bihari being Indian first names. Why would Europeans take Indian names in 1764 if they were not from India? You may look for " Roma Musician Panna Cinka and her father Amos Bihari on Google.
Today Roma use many of the words from Rajasthani, Hindi and of Sanskrit origin. Few are ek do trin yak nak bal angusth bersh diwas sassu sussro saalo Sali chora chori cior(chor) gia sov kammes thalle upral purano maal dukh, kasht, tato, langhal(lame) maang, des, lajja and so on. I know hundreds. There are thousands. Sometimes grammar has changed as per European style . Like we would say sov gia and Roma would say gia sov. Same meaning though. Has slept.
Romani words are from pre-Muslim era in India and hence pure Sanskrit like hiv(him in Sanskrit) for snow or ice is used not barf as we use today. Please go to the following in TH-cam to see more. “Romani an Indo Aryan Language” by Adriano, an Italian Roma and also “Roma girl from Kosovo finds her roots in India”
All Roma had moustache which was necessary for Rajput warriors. Purity codes of Roma were till recently practiced in India like a lady not entering the kitchen during few days of the month and Roma breaking the plate if animal licks it. My mother used to give the plates to beggars if our dog ever licked it even once. That is why death rate within Roma during great European plague was so low as claimed by experts.
Roma had also carried our proverbs like "while choosing a daughter in law, believe your ears more than eyes” meaning reputation of the girl's family was more important than her beauty. Would native Europeans choose a daughter in law? Another proverb is "If the road is crooked, you can't walk straight."
Roma eventually lost their religion, quite understandably but Sara kali of southern France is Rajput deity of Goddess kali. The deity is immersed in water body every year like we do in India. The Vatican has not recognised this deity as it has no link to Christianity.
Please see on TH-cam "Dr. Ian Hancock: Keynote Address at Romani Studies Conference, UC Berkeley" who makes very scholastic analysis of Romani history. He gives authentic details of entire history and how Europeans first found in 18th century that Romani was an Indo Aryan language when some European students went to India.
Many Roma have come to Delhi and Jaipur to get their DNA tested and were doubly assured of their Rajasthan roots.
Also, one may see on TH-cam " Kalbelia Dance" of Rajasthan which is same as Flamingo dance of the Roma. Even the dress of the dancers are same.
As a student in the US during seventies, I saw some slightly brown students speaking language somewhat familiar to me. They said they were new Roma migrants to the US from Spain but I did not know about Roma at that time.
I have received many mails stating Roma were Doms and untouchables from India and so on. This may not be so. First, there are no Doms in Rajasthan. Second, Roma who came to south have mostly Rajput surnames and very few Bhil (a jungle tribe, but soldiers too) surnames. Third, down trodden and timid would not venture leaving home to travel thousands of miles and fourth, Doms are very dark even for Indian standards while Roma are not.
There should be no doubt that Roma are our lost pral and Pena (We would say pra and behna) Hats off to them to keep the language and culture alive even after 50 generations while humanity in the entire world now melts away in two generations.
I am in contact with many European Roma from whom I gather some new facts time to time. I have gathered the above information till now from history of Rajasthan, originally known as Rajputana.

Sorry. More. I notice your voice over narration, I think is is very good, emphatic and absorbing. I would think maybe for voice over work too, which can be remote. Subtle accent too, very intriguing.

Yep - more layers of excellence, like you have a film crew with you. Exudes joy and presence, like you just belong there.
"The battery's flat, what shall we do?"
"Go to a stranger's birthday party of course"
"Great idea we'll have them drive out here and jump the van"
    "Brilliant"
It would be more remarkable if it didn't happen. Give me six 2 digit numbers (

Aha thank you! Our ethos for this trip (and I guess travelling in general) was just to say yes to everything and see where it gets us! And we end up with some pretty remarkable travel stories as a result.
We always say that Lucy is the lucky one and Ben has all the bad luck! People always tell me I should play the lottery so I’d choose 13, 14, 15, 21, 25 and 45 😛
I’d never thought of doing voiceover work, I wonder if there’s a market for it? Despite living in Cornwall/France for all of my life I have a curiously well-spoken South East England accent 🤷‍♀️

@@FromRustToRoadtrip I just notice voices for some reason, I could easily place yours in commercials or travel shows (duh). I was thinking you could make it a remote part time career, in isolation. Anyway, just throwing seeds, can't hurt right now. 🤗

Lets see if we can do this again without attracting the trolls. Regarding the battery-trix. It works great on an old diesel engine/vehicle like yours, due to the function of the combustion of the diesel (compression, no electric spark, no regular ignition, mechanic fuel injection). The only danger really is that one might burn the alternator (it is constructed to run with a load - the battery ). But on most older vehicles, just the lights and/or a fan might be enough load. Once started, an older diesel engine will often run without neither the battery nor the alternator connected.
A petrol engine does not work the same, if You disconnect the battery on such an engine, one of three things might happen. The engine shuts off (due to ignitions, fuel-injection and or other electronic systems shuts off). The alternators diods/cars electronics burns up (due to an overcharging alternator) OR at best, nothing. It is however never a good idea to do it on a vehicle with a petrol engine - and the newer the vehicle the more of a no-no it is (back in the old days it was a common trix to see if the alternator charged).
I am sorry to have been a part in "polluting" your comment field by responding to these trolls. :)
Otherwise, yet another great watch/video from the - for many - unknown Balkan. I hope to take a similar way down south of Europe one day. Take care and lay low. One day everything will be back to normal again :)

Did I catch that right? Did you say a video upload took you 2 hours and it was slow? When I was at the end of the Ardnarmurchan Peninsula on the Scottish west coast, a 15 minute upload took 19 hours!!! Even a four and a half minute quickie took 7 hours! Internet speeds there are glacially slow. So...if you ever do a van tour of the Scottish Higlands and Islands, keep you vlogs to about 2 minutes or you'll be trapped in upload hell!

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Haha good tip! It sounds like Scotland has maybe the slowest internet speed in that case 😂 Still 2 hours is a lot when you’re paying by the hour at an Internet cafe on an extremely tight budget.
We’d love to visit Scotland one day though! Annoyingly it would take less time to get to Spain from where we live in the UK 😂

Thank you for the insightful and fascinating message, you really have done your research and it’s incredible interesting to read! Romani heritage and culture is complex yet very interesting to us as it’s such a mix of languages and cultures spread across so many countries yet with one origin. We were talking about creating a photo documentary project that traces the Roma from Europe all the way back to their roots in India by meeting people from the many countries in which they have settled. Perhaps with your help and knowledge we could realise this project some time over the next few years?
We’ll save your email address if that’s alright with you, and thank you again for taking the time to write this out for us!
