  • Growing mushrooms, either at home, or on a commercial scale, is a great way to have an ongoing supply of delicious gourmet or medicinal mushrooms, and you don’t need much to get started.
    To get the best yield and properly formed mushrooms, you’ll need to provide the best fruiting conditions possible, and one factor you’ll need to get right is having the correct amount of light.
    This may come as a surprise, as a lot of people assume that mushrooms are grown in the dark!
    Join us in today’s video to find out if mushrooms do need light, and what you can do to create the ideal lighting conditions for the best possible mushroom harvest!

    I have learned so much from your videos. I am curious. You use a lot of filter bags do you have a video on how to add micron filter to grow bags. Because I would like to buy poly tubing and micron filters to help cut my cost of production. Also I cannot find grow bags with filters over 450mm tall. Would like to have bags 1 meter and would like to know if I would need multiple micron filters in a bag that tall.

    I've a question please.
    For lux calculation, What surface do you considère in a room L 3m x W 2,5m x H 3m ?
    Is it the ground surface (7,5m² here) or all surface (ground, walls and ceillin)?
    In the second case, if we have a 3rd shelve in the middle of the room, do we considere it and increase the surface reccordingly?
    Thanks

    Hi Adam, you say that you found that white and blue LED lights are best at growing mushrooms. Well according to a website, it all depends on the mushroom species. E.g. oyster mushrooms grow better in red light than in blue light, magic mushrooms that produce psilocybin grow better in blue light and shiitake mushrooms grow best in green light.
    Can you specify what species of mushroom you found grow best under white LED lights please?
    Also LED lights come in cool white or warm light or ice blue colours. What colour would you recommend buying for lion’s mane and black pearl oyster mushrooms? I hope you reply to my comment and query.

    I watched a video where a fellow did a very comprehensive study of light levels and growth and weight yields of the different mushrooms, I am sorry I can't find it to link to it, but he tested 100, 300, 500, 700 lumens on the various shrooms and the general outcome was that 500 lumens were the most productive as to the ratio of head size to mass and weight yield.
    The 700 lumen was not much more but the difference going from 5oo to 300 and then to 100 lumens was profoundly less productive.
    I just installed 1.5 meters of 6500K LED light strip to the lid of my 66qt grow box and was somewhat disappointed to discover it only produced 170 lumens at the media surface level. I am going to go with it per your advice as I am just a hobbyist and increasing yield is not a big deal for me at my beginner stage. Thank you for the info.!

      Mushrooms generate vitamin D from sunlight just like humans, so I assume yes, but only if UV lights are used since this is the wavelength of light that synthesizes vitamin D.

    Do the lights need to be waterproof? Can you share a link where I can find these lights? Thank you

    • @GroCycleTV
      @GroCycleTV  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there - we've gone for waterproof, as they are safe in high humidity, and in case we ever need to clean using a hose... IP 67 rating covers you for that. A useful link on the ratings and their context is here: www.flexfireleds.com/led-ip-ratings-led-flex-strip-waterproofing-explained-waterproof-v-nonwaterproof-led-strip-lights/ - but if in doubt, speak to an electrician in your local area who can advise on an official capacity!
      There are so many places out there that stock these and a quick Google search brings back lots of results, one example is - www.ultraleds.co.uk - but just one of many!!

  • @LabelsAreMeaningless

    Have you tested with the other colors of LED lighting? It seems odd that you'd need the room that intensely bright. I also suggest eye protection in that room.

    • @GroCycleTV
      @GroCycleTV  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi - we've tried different coloured LEDs and use these cool white ones, as they best mimic shaded/indirect sunlight. A lot of mushrooms would tend to grow on a forest floor, so tends to be a lot more shaded that being in direct sunlight, and that's what we aim to recreate...
      No eye protection needed! The video camera makes these lights glare a lot more than they do in real life, and as with any lighting source, you're best not to look at it directly - same as a normal light bulb really - but lighting like this in a fruiting room creates a safe working environment...
      What lighting source do you prefer? Always great to hear what setups other growers use!! :-)

    Did you ever try defused natural light? What were your findings?

    • @GroCycleTV
      @GroCycleTV  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes - and it's ideal, but if you grow on a commercial scale you need to be able to control the quantity of light, the hours of light, not have changes in a bright/stormy day, etc. We actually recommend diffused, or indirect, natural light when using a grow kit at home, and it does mimic exactly what you would find in the wild, so for home growing, yes, it's spot on!

      @GroCycleTV  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi - I think you mean the small environment box? If so, it's called a Mella, and it's built specifically for growing mushrooms, and allows you to control light levels, humidy, and fresh air exchange. They're really easy to clean and look after, and the perspex screen means you can watch your mushrooms grow! firstbuild.com/inventions/mella/

      @@GroCycleTVThat's really neat and I love the finish, but wow it's expensive! Coincidentally I spotted that they use the same humidity sensor I do. My one also does temperature, but no lighting. And it has a screen and menu system. I have an extra output I was planning to use for cooling or a mister, but could use for lighting, perhaps. I was aiming mine at DIY and installing into tubs or grow tents. Exciting!

    • @GroCycleTV
      @GroCycleTV  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ChristieNel That's great that you've made your own system - the Mella isn't a budget product, but it's a great system for those that want to get up and running quickly and without the need for lots of practical skill and knowledge of electrics - if you can make your own though you'll learn even more along the way like you have done - kudos!!

    Newbie here..why would you want to hold back ‘pinning’?

    • @GroCycleTV
      @GroCycleTV  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, greta question - it just ensures that the energy goes initially into allowing the mycelium to colonise the block before then going into the fruiting stage. It means that after that, all the energy goes into the fruiting bodies, rather than splitting the energy between colonisation and fruiting, so your more likely to get well formed, and larger, fruiting bodies.

  • @ChristieNel

    1:32 hey what???? Don't just drop that on us willy nilly and move right along, that is a crime against the mushroom on the order of what we did to the Pug breed of dog via artificial selection; someone must pay for this...

    • @GroCycleTV
      @GroCycleTV  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hey - firstly, thanks for watching and challenging up with this comment... we're not changing the breeding mushroom here, it's just what happens when you grow in the wold (lots of oxygen, access to light) vs. growing under different controlled conditions (high CO2 and low light) - it changes the appearance of the mushrooms, but of you fruited the same mushroom from the same spawn in wildly different conditions (one to mimic wild, the other high CO2 and dark) you would get very different looking mushrooms - I agree that selective breeding with dogs has caused some very dangerous issues, but that's not the case here and we're not changing, or trying to change the breed! Thanks :-)
