The cardiology 3 was in production for over 2 decades, I imagine the 5 wont be out until 2040, or so. Stethoscopes aren't Apple products, you know. They don't release a new one every year! LOL The Classic 2 SE was the flagship model for almost 30 years! As far as the Cardiology 3 vs the 4, I don't see any difference between the two at all.
@smorris281 Agreed. Littmann is highly precise. Masterfully designing innovations takes time. I've had my Cardiology lll for a long time now without a need to purchase a lV. The V will perhaps introduce an improved metal alloy for an even more sensitive chest piece. Who knows? My black tubes, silver chest piece, and well taken care of stethos looks new.
He keeps saying "doctor's stethoscope", but I have seen everyone in healthcare using all of these models, including physician assistants, nurses, EMT's, respiratory therapists, and nursing assistants.
If you are purchasing new then you will struggle to find classic II which is not old stock. The III claims to give better auscultation quality according to 3M
The difference is very slight, however the classic 3 comes with a diaphragm on both sides which would be useful if you are seeing both adults and children. However, the hard ear tips that come with the classic 2 are basically indestructible if you want something more rugged and don't pull off as easily as the soft ones. I've found the sound quality of the soft tips is better initially (particularly at shutting out sounds in a noisy environment) but deteriorates after about 10years of use.
Currently the Cardiology lll gave way for the lV. I wonder if Littmann is preparing a Cardiology V and, if so, what innovation will it include.
