Been to Caprock Canyon several times for hiking. Fantastic place, free of the commercialization that's taken over Palo Duro Canyon. The bison are a big plus.

They call Palo Duro Canyon the Grand Canyon of Texas. It’s Amazing. Went as a young adult. Like you, I can’t wait to visit again. This time on my Valkyrie Motorcycle...oh yeah!!
My next trip is going to this beautiful place. Living in North Texas for so many years and not going.... Shame on me. They are such incredible creatures. I have been up close to them in Yellowstone back in the late 1970s and again in 83. Awesome 👍 thanks TCR. Love your show.
We visited Caprock Canyons State Park in spring of 2020. It is a very lovely park. Beautiful canyon areas. One grassy spot had thousands of tiny yellow flowers. There was also a prairie dog town and the little prairie dogs were running around. We saw at least two bison who came very close to our vehicle but weren't bothered by us at all. There is also a small lake there and spaces to camp. It is a truly beautiful park and ideal for visiting.

Last of the "Wild" bison all are branded and tagged. I guess in this century that's about as close to "wild" as you will find in the U.S. for most species.
“ When Mrs. Goodnight realized the inevitable wiping out of the buffalo she urged her husband to endeavor to preserve them. He set aside at her request 600 acres from his great ranch of 60,000 acres for buffalo park. In a letter telling of his start as a buffalo raiser, Mr. Goodnight said: “In the spring of 1879- to be exact, May 15th- at my wife’s request, started out to look for some young buffalo. At last I found a few younger ones in Palo Duro canyon, and ‘roped’ them from horseback. The month following W.W. Dyer, my wife’s brother, caught two young females. From this start we have now a herd of forty-five purebred buffaloes. In 1884 I began to cross them with Polled Angus and Galloway cattle, and have a herd of sixty of these cross-breeds. This year we have been fortunate in getting fifteen buffalo calves.”
Utah has two herds since 1893. I saw one herd at Antelope Island from a distance. It's good that people 100 years ago knew it was wrong to kill off the species.
Well that’s the only way you can maintain record of a species that there’s so few of unfortunately. If one gets out or is poached it’s a good way to track where it came from. It’s more of a shame we have to keep them contained within a fence. I think we as the human race have come way too far advanced for our own good and it may benefit us to slow it down or even step it back a few notches
The hunts of the 1870s and 1880s were not truly "hunting". It was industrialized slaughter on an a massive scale - with hunters sometimes shooting from railroad cars. The hides were taken, and the meat left to spoil. Bleached bones littered the plains for many years. Please don't say it was sport - or "hunting". 🐃 🤷♂️
Texas at the time had Indians that would not stay on reservations. It was decided to destroy the herds, this was the primary reason for there destruction. William Tecumseh Sherman beginning in the late 1860s, he organized the killing of some 5 million bison in an effort to drive the creatures to the brink of extinction.
@Hillary Clintubnear extinction IS a waste..after all that prosperity that the buzzards and coyotes experienced it all slammed down on them on the rebound no telling how many starved and were diseased the more starved they became.
This is so sad! To think we could be sharing this land with such majestic creatures. So much raw power. IS IT BAD I WANT TO EAT ONE! JUST A TASTE I BET IT WOULD BE GREAT SLOW SMOKED WITH A NICE DRY RUB.
You'd think they would have mentioned the number of Bison in the herd, it looked to me after all these years they still only have 10 or so animals. I was expecting see hundreds.

Need to set up cameras so we can watch stupid people go up and try to pet them. Quality entertainment
Awesome! Who else could smell this video? I feel connected to the pest when I watch buffalo.
Oh my lord, this would be a dream job...
yep me too.
I seen a few bison traveling through Ky, near Nelson county
The video and audio quality sure was meager in the 1800s.
I think my dad took me here back in 1980

There's A Rural Town Named Goodnight, Plus William Tell, Santa Claus, Etc
🤠👍
I went to high school with one of Charles Goodnight's relatives.
Those bison need their own home undisturbed. It was a shame that they were ruthlessly slaughted in the first place.
@uncle bobs dead And the bison are now treated better than Native Americans... ☹️
@uncle bobs dead yeah millions ..........

We have camped at this park. We highly recommend this park for camping.

Hate to see the ear tags on them. I know the reasoning, but wild animals are not ear tagged

In Wyoming, that is part of Brucelosis control. I'd suspect same thing here.
who are the eight people that did not like this?
What did they feed on back then and is it also gone?
Grass - there was lots of prairie land across America.
Yes , all the grass is gone !

Agree. It was actually part of the Indian wars, but that's another story.
@eitoobmiz Why do you feel the need to scream ? don't you feel your message is worthy enough to be appreciated without all caps ?
Guess people that don't like it don't wanna learn

There are commercial breeders and yes they're good eating.
I suggest bison prime rib, and roasted marrow on the bone if you can find it.
