    Mezcal! That's right, mezcal is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from any type of maguey - similar to tequila. The word mezcal comes from Nahuatl mexcalli, which means "oven-cooked agave." We've tried tequila on the channel before but never mezcal! Let's see how our TRYers react to this new drink!

    It's been a while since the video, but to whoever might be useful: the reason mezcal is mainly produced in Oaxaca is because the name is a protected denomination.
    By this point you may have deduced that tequila, mezcal and other drinks share almost the same thing in common: they are alcoholic drinks that come from the distilation of agave. But (by law) depending on the region you make the distilation process, the method (with old tools or in a factory) and the plant species you use, you can (or can't) use the name. To call an agave distilation "mezcal" you need to use specific species of agave, (mostly) traditional tools to process the plant and make your process in the designated regions; otherwise you can't use the word "mezcal" in your label.
    In the present, there is an ongoing debate of what commercial name should be used for the drinks produced with the exact same processes for tequila, mezcal, sotol or bacanora that are made outside the legal designated regions (remember, by mexican law only certain regions can use those name to protect heritage and commerce).
    "Pussy, pussy... XD"
    Be proud, according to the official ranking of mexican authorities, Montelobos is one of the three mezcals with the highest alcohol content (only surpassed by two brands: Santa Pedrera and Alipús). It would be fair to say, though, that while it was fun to see them suffering their first encounter with mezcal, there are softer brands; precisely for those who don't want to have their clavicles sweating very early on in the drinking experience XD.
    There are other mezcal products that softer even more the experience, like "mezcal cream".

    Mexican here, I once tried moonshine mezcal. It tasted like a mixture of vodka and tequila but with a deeper fruit aroma and sweet tinge; a tad oily. After the first (and only) chug I went blind for a couple of seconds and felt a punch directly on my brain. My Dad, God bless his souls, told me I wasn't suppossed to drink it neat.
    12/10, would try it again.

  • @cava857

    I would recommend another video with mezcal cocktails, the earthy and smoky flavors go very good with sweet flavors, as they mentioned. In Mexico there is a very traditional well known of preparing a cocktail with Jamaica water, is prepared like a tea with jamaica dried flowers, or even something more sweet like a mango cocktail with mezcal, nice to see a Mexican drink being "enjoyed" (haha) by other people around the world!

      I think they probably didn't have limes in Ireland about 30-40 years ago when people first started figuring the tequila thing out, so they used lemons instead and that just became the standard. There's more South and Central Americans in Ireland (particularly Dublin) now so the cocktails are much more accurate these days

    Tequila specifically comes from the state of Jalisco in Mexico, the same way real champagne is made in France only. Mezcal is a broad term for alcohol made from agave plants, mainly the blue agave.

    • @jeffg.6110
      @jeffg.6110 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      When Lolsy said Mezcal is a type of Tequila, she had it backward. Tequila is a type of mezcal. Tequila must be made from blue agave (& only blue agave).

    • @kdmecosolutions
      @kdmecosolutions 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All Tequilas are a type of Mezcal but all Mezcals are not tequila. The clear or blanco tequila is the shortest aged, the gold is blanco with Carmel color added... a rip off, the next is reposado, then anejo, with anajo regular and extra and the extra you sip like fine wine.

      There are grades of all kinds of alcohol. Just compare something like Jack Daniel’s to a good bourbon like Buffalo Trace or Three Roses, or Bombay Sapphire gin vs Roku gin. Also, there have only been higher end brands of tequila for the last 15 or so years tops, so it’s time for mezcal to step up too.

      Mezcal is tequila but it’s not produced in the region that can legally call it Tequila. Just like the Champagne region in France. If it doesn’t come from there - then it ain’t.

    As a Oaxaca resident I can say the bottles you used would not be drunk in Oaxaca - it is a commercialized version of the real Mezcal I buy from the artisanal and ancestral little producers.

  • @PlotterJan
    @PlotterJan 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    To taste a mezcal it is important to do it in a tall glass and holding it by the neck, this way you prevent it from getting hot and you will be able to detect its qualities.
    View: Good production is reflected in the color, clarity, brightness, transparency and body that is perceived by the density of the “tears” it generates.
    Smell: The intensity of the aroma will depend on the agave with which it was distilled. When vacuuming it, do not do it all at once because you will not be able to appreciate its components.
    Taste: Before trying it, shake the glass and smell it again, it will release essences that you had not discovered. This way you can identify its sweetness, acidity or bitterness.
    Touch: When you try it you can feel the heat, the cold, the astringency of the drink or whether it is spicy, burning or abrasive.

    Final Ward with: Very Slightly Smoky Rye Whisky (100 Rittenhouse will do, but the original recipe calls for Danish Stauning Bastard Rye), Lime (not lemon!), Green Chartreuse (or sub, i use Gauloise Vert nowadays), and Agave Liqour (mixing 50/50 Light Agave Sirup and Mezcal (the gentle Del Maguey Vida)) - Lime goes with the Mezcal and the dilluted smoke of the Mezcal goes with the Rye. This, especially with original componenets, will fire *everything* in your mouth. "The Bastard" is a drink for sipping and drooling both :D This is the best use of Mezcal I have come across, and why I have a bottle.

    A bartenders suggestion; when you drink just about any alcohol its best to allow your mouth to tamper the burn a bit and to acclimate every thing to the drink. Let it rest in your mouth for a few seconds and then let the drink go over your tongue and let it rest then swallow. You can neutralize quite a bit of alcohol burns this way and you get the flavor. You should experience in almost every sample of a drink a front end taste, a middle of the road and a finish. When you let the drink rest a bit in your mouth you are actually initiating quite a bit of stuff going on in there with chemical bonds and reactions and to get the full experience when you are sipping that drink should stay in there for a bit. Its almost like smoking a cigar or eating a complex desert you tend to savor the flavor a bit longer before the next step.

      I've never heard of scorpions in mezcal only certain worms that live in the agave plants, and whoever takes the last shot from the bottle is required to swallow the worm it's a tradition. They worms are said to be very hallucinogenic. 🌵

    I was so concerned with the first mezcal. I’m glad you brought on at least one high quality product for this one (del maguey). You should do more history lessons for them. Ie why does the del maguey come in a hand woven basket. Difference between this and tequila.

    • @jamesrawlins735
      @jamesrawlins735 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And to add a 3rd element - pulque, the third drink made from the agave plant (made from the sap of the agave). Mezcal is made from the cooked "heart" of the agave, while tequilla uses the entire plant. Pulque was made for hundreds of years before either mezcal or tequilla.
