Word around the campfire is that a good way to tell is the plaster is completely dry throughout is hold the back of your hand to it. If cool, it's still wet on the inside. Cool feeling is b/c the water is still evaporating though/out of the dry feeling surface. Also means the surface isn't 100% dry, as it may look or feel. If left until 100% dry throughout, your results might change. Also multiple thin coats are better then thick. If you want that heavy texture like on the alcohol ink one, might want to build it up like you do with wax. :)

I love to watch you experimenting, and let me tell you, in my opinion, there is no reason at all why you shouldn't share your experiences with the ones of us who are super curious! You are doing fantastic and art IS experimenting and daring to do mistakes, that is the entire essence of making personal art, isn't it 👏💕👍🎨🖼
Great idea for texture under encaustic wax.....A couple of tips I would add is to first lightly sand the wood substrate first and maybe even give it a coat of a waterbased primer (such as Kilz waterbased by Zinnser) to help the plaster adhesion as some drywall will chip off of wood surfaces. Also,, I would suggest sealing the dry plaster with a good coat of acrylic binder to seal it and make it less porous for the alcohol ink (or any acrylic inks that you don't want getting sucked into the plaster). :)

Hey! I had a question and was wondering if you’d be able to help me. I’ve been experimenting with alcohol inks and I really wanted to do a mix of alcohol ink with plaster over the top to make little islands and then resin. I’m not sure how to do this as I’m unsure if plaster will stick to the Yupo paper and if not is there any other alternatives I could do? An example of what I wanted to do is Kim rose art.
I have never used yupo paper, so I have no idea what that would be like... you can always try it! Honestly, what comes to my mind is adding the alcohol ink straight to the resin and then putting it over the plaster peaks. But I'm not sure how that would work, either. Time to experiment!!

I'm new here and happy to have found your channel. This is a very interesting experiement and I really like the results, especially on the highly textured piece. I'm wondering though, about how stable the drywall compound is over time in holding onto the wood without peeling away like things do sometimes. Any ideas on that?
You had so many moments when the blue and black one was really nice and yes, the end result did turn out cool! Not a big fan of the other one but it's great to see experiments that don't work out too :-) My only wonder is the archival nature of the drywall - it would be nice to know...
That is a great question... The drywall is very porous and the wax can soak right in, so I see no reason why it couldn't last for decades. But there could be I suppose...

By acrylic binder you are referring to clear gesso?

I haven't tried that, but I don't think so, not unless you're using some pieces that are already dry.

That's a good question. I haven't had any problems with my pieces so far. It may be a bigger issue the larger your pieces are.
