    I have to say that I have always found this track more compelling than pretty much all others. There are sections which were not like any other track. Eau Rouge/Radillion, Les Combes/Haute de la Cote, the incredibly dangerous Malmedy and the combination of Hollowell and Stavelot were not like any other track. And these were public roads! But the track was always lethal and the list of drivers who died there is simply too long. It had to stop. I just wish there was more film of this because it was clearly a great race.

      Also the Masta Kink had that uphill long chicane thing so cars got REAL light at the top and it was on the main straight so you did NOT lift cause you would lose 5 seconds or so on the next part of the straight!
      It was a legendary track, and I deeply miss the original one but it was too fast for modern cars - In simulations any F1 car after 2002 can go flat out 97% of the time around it.
      It was made for the Alfas, Auto Union, Mercedes and pre-war cars kinda testing raw horsepower with a few corners and it forced teams to find horsepower from 1925-1970 and thus kinda won too hard and made it self obsolete. I would love for it to be recreated and joined w the GP track today, so we can have historic races on the old track.

      @@barath4545 I’m not aware that the cars got light at the Masta. Maybe they did at Malmedy but there was a chicane there from 1970 onwards. Interestingly, that chicane had previously been used in 1937, though I’m not sure it was exactly the same.

    Crazy to think that within 18 months, five of the drivers in this race would be dead (Courage, Rindt, Giunti, Rodriguez and Siffert) ... plus, a further two would die later in accidents (Peterson in 78 and Stommelen in 83). Plus, Graham Hill's plane crash in 75.
    That means 41% of this starting grid didn't survive the decade...

      The scary death rate was one of the main reasons Stewart retired after 1973 (which ironically was the first year that F1 a whole season without a driver death). He estimated that he had less then a 50% chance of surviving long enough to get a fourth driver's title. The 'Circus' had become a driver eating machine and the owners / FIA didn't seem to care one whit.

    0:20 The Malmedy chicane was only used in Formula 1 on one occasion because this was the last World Championship race on this Spa layout. However, the circuit remained in use for some years and the chicane was part of that.
    The lap record for the old circuit is held (in perpetuity) by Henri Pescarolo, in a Matra-Simca MS670B set at the 1,000kms race in 1973. His time of 3.13.400 represented an average speed of 262.45 km/h (163.08 mph). For the safety levels of the time that was no longer realistic, especially considering the alarming death toll the track continued to rack up.

    • @topcat4759
      @topcat4759 ปีที่แล้ว

      Barry Sheene also held the 500cc bike record at an average lap speed of 135mph back in 1977 on his world championship winning Suzuki the same year. Think the record still stands today no matter how much technology has changed. Armco may be safer for F1 but not so much for bikes!

    I wish that there where more flatout racetracks today in F1, driving on the limit. With today's safety standards there should be room to create these tracks, instead of them dull stop and go tracks.
    They could start with the Osterreichring for instance, adding the old part to the new circuit.

    Does anybody remember the mobile hospital from this era?
    My parents and I moved to Hemingford Grey in Huntingdonshire in 1968, and parked on the main village road - close to the village policeman's house, was parked (between events) a double trailer articulated lorry that was the mobile ambulance.

    You go off the track at speed back then, you were in a world of hurt. No huge runoff areas with soft barriers and maybe some gravel.

    Amon waited for the BRM to break , as it usually did... except it didn't 😂

    • @tonyrata4796
      @tonyrata4796 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In his biography , Amon was a little dubious about the BRM . According to him , he had talked to B.R.M. Designer Aubry Woods and during the conversation Woods had let slip that they had developed a 3.3lt version of their v12 , apparently for sportscar racing .
      Amon had no proof , but said that he always wondered .
      He broke the all time lap record and still couldn't win ! Maybe he was just frustrated ?
      It was still a great win, on a great track , for a very talented driver .

  • @sixtyshippee
    @sixtyshippee ปีที่แล้ว

    You can really see the differance in driver input then compared with today basically the driver is in control and is controlling the cars movements today cornering speeds are such that the technology is to a large extent controlling the car and if it fails a big crash is un avoidable but with the huge run offs on most tracks this seldom results in driver injury with the cars built in crashability ,as i have said about other motor sports higher speed dozent result in better racing often the reverse with airflow and more aerodynamics playing a part.

      That's the problem: all those people who rave about how much better it was simply forget how many drivers die - a lot of them at this very circuit. Monza was manageable - stupid fast but manageable. Austria was manageable - up to a point, as was Silverstone. Spa was stupid fast but not manageable.

    F1 these days is like watching paint dry. Huge wings and ground effect takes out all the excitement. The one who has the best "aero package" wins.
    BTW, the original film is probably awesome, unfortunately this video is badly crippled probably due to a dozen or so video conversions between different frame rates etc. It's making me nauseous.

    Incredible, what risks the drivers took without really making a big deal of it, except for Jackie Stewart. This is fantastic Racing but also insane. Jackie was right, it could not go on. Racing owes Jackie S a lot. Still, this Racing was very pure but utterly lethal. Different times.....

    My favourite circuit of all time and now the only "interesting" circuit left but the one circuit you can't afford to make a mistake on because of its breathtaking average lap speeds and unforgiving nature, there is a gathering clamour to sanitise it which would be a tragedy 😢
