Hey Ian, great job as always. Just one criticism, I think it would be more helpful that you title Legion number in the title if only to get more eyes on it. Yes, you've done it on the thumbnail, but it's a bit too small I feel!
My personal favorite legion only rivaled by ironically the Imperial Fists, everything about them is so cool. I am gonna be running the 4th with lots of Armour, because that is the best look for a space marine tank imo
"During the Great Crusade, Venus was dominated by War Witches who fielded armies of Litho-Gholem. The early Iron Warriors Space Marine Legion led the conquest of Venus during the Mehr Yasht campaign." One of those metal AF quotes I'd love to know more about that just leads to dead links. One of the things I simultaneously love and hate about the setting. Also, Ah yes, we're in wars of attrition and have a core elite element that does what infantry does...take positions and grind the enemy in submission. The primarch's response..."kill 1/10th of your unit for doing exactly what you're supposed to do...well." This is one of those moments were Jimmy Space *should* have leaned in and said..."Um belay that...no. 10% losses for no damn reason is stupid. We're fighting a war. With literally everyone." But that would have required him to NOT be the worst Dad in the universe and to possibly *think* about how another being felt.
Agreed. The Venus campaign sounds _awesome._ Which makes it infuriating that we hear basically nothing about it, much less have the tools within the game to reenact those battles. There are so many xenos species, variant human cultures, and specialized technologies from the Crusade that make one think, "that would be really cool to play on the tabletop". The War Witches of Venus and their Litho-Gholems. The Hrud. The Invisible Guard of the "Emperor of Mankind" from the first HH novel. An entire galaxy of cool groups that we hear very little about and never get to play as. Instead, we have the Horus Heresy, the event occurring after all those groups were dead or near to it, and involves Space Marines almost to the exclusion of everyone else. If your faction didn't already have either a model range or an organizational framework from 40K, you weren't allowed to participate at all. This is not even getting into all the xenos races or weird human cultures that still exist in 40K, but still have no models. Like the Rak'ghul, Catachan Devils, or Enslavers. Imagine if any of these various groups got models. Unaligned so they could slot into any army, or run in Kill Team. Or with rules for running detachments entirely of survivors of the Imperium's conquests, banding together for survival and revenge.
If I may play devil's advocate: If big E, right after giving Perturabo the keys to his own legion, then immediately steps in and contradicts one of his first significant decisions on the molding of said legion, Perturabo would NOT have taken it in the spirit of constructive criticism. And from a strictly logistic perspective, the Iron Warriors had rock solid geneseed and they "recruited" like monsters. They recovered fine. It wouldn't have been worth it for the damage it would have done to Big E's relationship with Perturabo at the time. Or he could have been a douche and been totally cool with it. You never know with that guy.
@bluecho4: I’m surprised that James Workshop hasn’t taken the opportunity of the 30k relaunch to rebrand it as “Age of Darkness” or something so they have the option of easily expanding to cover the reunification, crusade and scouring.

The one thing, that I don't like about the Iron Warriors story is Perturabo being elevated to deamon prince when he had a noted loathing of all things deamon and demonic.
Hopefully when we get a BL novel covering the event we will see what caused him to choose ascension. Remember that HH is just expanding on stuff and adding to snippets of lore that has been in the books for years but not fully explained.

Oddly enough, out of all the traitor legions, the Iron Warriors had the most that turned their back on their Primarch and stayed loyal to the Imperium. Some even fought along their old rivals the Imperial Fists.
The story of the iron warriors makes me wonder what if things could’ve indeed been different and It was Dorn whose Legion was tasked for siege Warfare while Pet got to make so much more than just weapons. Would things play out similarly with Dorn instead becoming bitter and fall to madness? Would Dorn in-fact be perfectly fine and Petrobo would still end up the way he is with his fall? Maybe the Heresy doesn’t even happen or at least can’t be as devastating as it was if Horus didn’t have access to someone with as much ability, resourcefulness and competence as Pet. So many possibilities
I thought the Iron Warriors and Thousand Sons were pretty close? I know Perturabo and Magnus were very close at least; Magnus' two requests to the Emperor during the siege of Terra were redemption for his sons and redemption for Perturabo.
Took me 4 episodes to realize you are going in number order. 🤦🏽 excited for imperial fist and world eaters episode. Can’t figure out which I want to paint for 30k
I've long wondered why there aren't more loyalist iron warriors. Think about it: after centuries of unappreciated sacrifice, the legion finally finds their gene-seed father, and what does that 'father' do? Judges their losses marks of failure and their sucesses inadequite, then commands them to beat their own brothers to death because just to teach them all a lesson. You'd think that would be enough of a rejection to redirect some marines feelings of bitterness and paranoia towards Pertarabo himself leaving them uninclined to follow Pertarabo when he turned traitor.
Fair point, it is rumoured that some later chapters are actually made up of and are desendents of iron warriors, but for obvious reasons one would want this to shrouded in mystery for multiple reasons
@@ArbitorIan there were plenty apparently. But being Iron Warriors they didn't go around trumpeting their loyalty. They just stoically got on with stubbornly defending the Imperium and their designated position. Often then being butchered by numerically superior traitor forces rather than sensibly retreating and regrouping. But plenty also survived and there are many loyalist chapters with secret iron warrior geneseed even to 40k like the "ultramarine" silver skulls
A decent amount of Iron Warriors did stay loyal, because they were garrisoned on conquered worlds and stayed there for most of The Great Crusade. They didn't spend as much time with the legion and didn't develop hatred and bitterness towards the Imperium. After the Heresy, they either joined the Blackshield Space Marines or ptetended to be part of another legion. The latter is what happened to Dantioch's surviving battle brothers. As for chapters, I'm pretty sure the Minotaurs are confirmed to have Iron Warriors gene seed. The Marines Malevolent are not confirmed to be a successor of anyone, but share quite a lot of traits with the 4th legion. And finally, both the Silver Skulls and the Scythes of the Emperor are speculated by some to not actually be Ultramarine successors, but rather Iron warriors ones, but there's very little proof especially for the Scythes.

interesting how their homeworld had a clear fantasy counterpart to Ancient Greece going on with the name "Olympia" and the warring city-states but Games Workshop never gave the Iron Warriors a corresponding aesthetic like the Ultramarines being Roman, the White Scars Mongolian and the Space Wolves Scandinavian... the one Space Marine Chapter to look like spacefaring Hoplites being the Minotaurs
That in and of itself is their character. No particular style, no embellishments or decorations, only stoic functionality. Sheer bleakness. You don't need a particular aesthetic when slogging through the mires of the dirtiest, unthankful war zones in the galaxy. Just get the job done and move to the next. No time or use for flashy bling.
Nah, only the ones with primarch POV are trash. The ones with astartes POV are variable. The ones with human POV are usually the best. That's partly why most of these concentrate on the Legion rather than the personal story of the Primarch.
Before the finding of Perturabo, the Iron Warriors were actually the a popular legion with the rank and file Imperial soldier. This is because the Iron Warriors then never gave off arrogant airs, rather the cold professionalism of the soldier and treated the members of the Imperial military with that same respect. So when baseline humans marched into the mouth of madness against the myriad of Xenos threats. They knew that the pre-Primarch Iron Warriors called then the Iron Shahs/Iron Lords were marching right next to them and would always have their back and always face the same danger with them. Then the fire nation att...er Perturabo was discovered and everything changed when they became the Iron Warriors.
I had no idea how interesting the iron warriors lore was. Definitely makes me want to know more. Probably not enough to paint an army though, the colour scheme is off putting.
There is a fun video by Arch where he talks about the traitor legions and if their gene seed could be reinstated to make new loyalist marines. It was pretty funny on some of them and some of them werent actually a bad idea while others were straight out not a chance in hell. There are rumors that some space marine legions might actually be from traitor gene seed most likely from the Iron Warriors or Death Guard as the Iron Warriors left not from corruption but from distaste in their treatment, and the Death Guard had civil wars inside their legion before the purge and had the most purged, but even after the purge they STILL had tons loyal to the Emperor.

Can't decide which I'd rather collect 😩
Yes
I’ve always had an interesting relationship with the Iron Warriors. While they may not be among my most favorite legions (that would include Dark Angels, Alpha Legion, White Scars, Blood Angels, Raven Gaurd, and Night Lords), I love how simple their concept is. I also simply enjoy the base but solid gunmetal Gray color sceme that they have.
When painting your armor is ineffective so you just leave it stock
Iron Warriors have been my army of choice for the better part of nearly 20 years. Good stuff!
A true son of Olympia ! Iron within brother ! (20 years too)
Turns out I will watch lore videos as long as Ian does them and they're 15 minutes! 😎
I just want to say that you are really knocking these out of the park for me. Short and sweet...I get the general idea over my morning cup of coffee. Thank you!
Awesome video can’t wait for more of the legions to come out. Good way to learn the basics of the legions
Love these videos. Knowing I need to wait only 13 more releases until we get to Salamanders is pain.
I just watched Iron Within on WH+ and instantly had to look up your vid on th Iron Warriors
I just want to say I like these videos on each legion its condense and focused on what are they and what have they done and not many youtubers do that so look forward to all the legions
love that your shirt fits the color scheme or the iron boys
We'll see how far the themed lighting and shirts get me!! I know I'm good til Imperial Fists, but Blood Angels might be a stretch...
@@ArbitorIan nothing a bottle of ketchup won't solve
Wait - so these videos are great, and also going to come out a blistering pace?! I was assuming I’d be rewatching all the past ones several times over before this would come out.
Their release schedule is totally random depending on what other videos I happen to get ready at the time, but I AM planing to have them all out by the time the game is released!!
Fantastic shirt to discuss the 4th legion.
I've been dusting off my old 3rd edition Iron Warriors and thinking about getting back into the game. Very nicely timed!
I know the game is very different, but I had an old story narrative from back then that I'd like to continue with my buddies.
Man what a great series. Really helps if people are picking a legion to play. Keep it up!
This series is fantastic, and a great new spin on something that is usually well established and well known. The IVth are my choice in HHv2 and I love their background and methods. They are a very underappreciated legion.
Christ mate you’re cranking these out! Thank you
Peter Turbo is the 2nd greatest Primarch after Robot Girlyman of course.
Iron Within Iron Without. Thank you for this lore break-down on the ole work horse legion unafraid to dive face first into all the nitty gritty aspects of war, that their more arrogant and prideful cousins would scoff at
most underrated WH40K channel love ya dude and tell all my 40K friends about ur vids
Loving those legion lore vids. Lots of good information in a very straith to the point and concise format. 10/10.
Excellent as always!
These videos on each legion are great. Looking forward to the next one!
Hey Ian, great job as always. Just one criticism, I think it would be more helpful that you title Legion number in the title if only to get more eyes on it. Yes, you've done it on the thumbnail, but it's a bit too small I feel!
towards the end you showed a picture of i believe is honsu, yet no mention. loving it so far cant wait for word bearers
My personal favorite legion only rivaled by ironically the Imperial Fists, everything about them is so cool. I am gonna be running the 4th with lots of Armour, because that is the best look for a space marine tank imo
It's pretty fuckin gangsta that they were still killing it during the Siege of Terra but just got pissed off and left
These videos are awesome. Easily my favorite thing you've done.
Always so happy to see one of your uploads, please keep up the good work!
IRON WITHIN! IRON WITHOUT
I really enjoy your content Ian! Keep it coming!
"During the Great Crusade, Venus was dominated by War Witches who fielded armies of Litho-Gholem. The early Iron Warriors Space Marine Legion led the conquest of Venus during the Mehr Yasht campaign."
One of those metal AF quotes I'd love to know more about that just leads to dead links.
One of the things I simultaneously love and hate about the setting.
Also, Ah yes, we're in wars of attrition and have a core elite element that does what infantry does...take positions and grind the enemy in submission.
The primarch's response..."kill 1/10th of your unit for doing exactly what you're supposed to do...well."
This is one of those moments were Jimmy Space *should* have leaned in and said..."Um belay that...no. 10% losses for no damn reason is stupid. We're fighting a war. With literally everyone."
But that would have required him to NOT be the worst Dad in the universe and to possibly *think* about how another being felt.
It’s addition by subtraction!
It's incredible just how terrible Jimmy space is at literally everything apart from the custodes 😂
Just want to say this series is great, and I look forward to the next video each time. It's such a pleasure to hear your take and your knowledge of how the lore has changed over time. Cheers Ian :]
Subscribed! I’m enjoying these series and can’t wait for the 9th legion
I've just finished reading Angel Exterminatus and realized that I identify with Perturabo the most out of all the other primarchs. I know there are a lot of memes about him and IW, but I don't care:)
Ya he's the disappointing nerd son son can't please his dad....just like me
@@daveeol1987 I see it a bit differently: a smart guy whose potential was repeatedly stifled by his uncaring dad, who only cared what his son could do *for him* , his interests. and later that blew up in his face. which is more or less my case:D
"disappointing herd son" is more of a Magnus type, imo:D
Damn these keep getting better & better
Picking a yellow pattern shirt while talking about a legion that loves a bit of yellow/black industrial trim? I see you, Arbitor!
Amazing mate! Incredible storytelling for a 40k newbie
@@archmageeldran2567 I rather they retcon that
White Scars are next! The Legion I know least about.
Love these lore videos, that go in depth into legions early history pre-primarch. Wil you ever cover the Blood Angels, I'd like to know how they were perceived early on, fresh from the factory so to speak.
Another great video. Loving this series.
Good call wearing the black and yellow shirt. I see the hazard markings when I squint.
It's so sad that putirabo was like, the best traitor Primark and he would have turned if the emperor just came down and gave him a hug
Putirabo made me lol, great typo.
Hey Ian, would you ever want to cover anything Age of Sigmar related? Based on your conversation on the "This Is Revolution" podcast, I bet you and Mr. Mephisto could tear it up.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to AoS, I'd love to see Warhammer fantasy get more love from youtubers, especially people like Ian who have been in on this shit for decades. Old cool Warhammer will never cease to be the coolest.
@@tappajavittu yeah warhammer fantasy has a lot of great stuff in it, but you're really missing out if you write off all of AoS. Like I think the Idoneth are one of the coolest factions lore-wise that GW's ever made, and I didn't care much for Stormcast until I watched Dawnstir's video on them, now I think they're incredibly interesting.
@@Micahaphone Just ignore me, I'm just an old man yelling at clouds who don't like the new cool toys.
Fantastic vid Ian. It's a shame we don't see Pert abroad in 40k
Would there ever be a chance of a seige of Terra video? Even an overview?
Loving this current series as ever.
I think maybe a 'unification and Crusade' overview and maybe a 'Horus Heresy History in 20 mins' might be worth doing
@@ArbitorIan Sounds brilliant, topics I'd definitely be interested in hearing more about. Could be good to round off the series?
Thanks for the reply, you run a fabulous channel.
This is the Legion GW said is my best fit. TBH as someone who studied Civil Engineering I always thought it would be the FISTS. 😡
These videos are SO good, thank you! 😃
Oddly enough, out of all the traitor legions, the Iron Warriors had the most that turned their back on their Primarch and stayed loyal to the Imperium. Some even fought along their old rivals the Imperial Fists.
Awesome video! World Eaters soon?
*Iron Warrior:* Father! I got 90% in all my subjects!
*Perturabo:* And the other 10? Beat your brother...
Awesome stuff Ian. Doubt anything was meant but the black book art @2:20 is a pre-Fenris space wolves and not an iron warrior, just FYI.
If I ever run Heresy it be as this legion, tho just for fun I'd run loyalist rather then traitor.
This video is incredible!
such a great series thank you!
4:32 A Squat!!!
There were a fair amount of loyalist Iron Warriors it seems, judging by how often they pop up in the books.
Fair point, it is rumoured that some later chapters are actually made up of and are desendents of iron warriors, but for obvious reasons one would want this to shrouded in mystery for multiple reasons
Dantioch was a boss.
Thanks for having my Garry’s mod picture “The Iron Cage” (13:09) in your video.
Feel free to use other pictures from my DeviantArt in future videos
Thanks! Yes, it's lovely. In fact, I used another in the next video (White Scars).
Also, relieved that this is one I credited properly. Pinterest being everywhere makes it a nightmare to source image credits sometimes!
Love these videos mate - you got a new subscriber! will you be doing one on the iron hands? i am torn between White Scars and teh Iron Hand sfor the Horus heresy 2nd Edition thats due soon.
That's the next one! I'm going in order...
@@ArbitorIan You legend!
Great video!
interesting how their homeworld had a clear fantasy counterpart to Ancient Greece going on with the name "Olympia" and the warring city-states but Games Workshop never gave the Iron Warriors a corresponding aesthetic like the Ultramarines being Roman, the White Scars Mongolian and the Space Wolves Scandinavian... the one Space Marine Chapter to look like spacefaring Hoplites being the Minotaurs
@@dekai7992 that is an excellent point!
One of my favorite legions
I like how Ian is making sm lore videos, after he said every sm hh book is trash
Nah, only the ones with primarch POV are trash. The ones with astartes POV are variable. The ones with human POV are usually the best. That's partly why most of these concentrate on the Legion rather than the personal story of the Primarch.
Still upset we've not gotten demom perturabo model yet, I would love to see super-obliterator primarch
9:55 Me: There is no greater hole than Perturabo.
Looking forward to alpha legion 🙂
