I really love this channel. I'm interested in 40k lore but never really got into it, partially because I don't like how it's presented by a lot of major channels. Lots of jokes that really don't work for me. You present it straight forwardly but are obviously passionate about 40k and I'm just really vibing with it, so I hope this lore series continues.
I could get used to this release schedule (especially given your excellent collab with Midwinter Minis. I'd love see another video like that regrimdarkifying the cleaner factions such as Eldar.)
that bit about the dreadwing being dedicated to "war crimes, basically" got a legit, if very uncomfortable chuckle out of me. telling it like it is! great video. I never really got into the horus heresy era of 40k (or should that be 30k? heh), so these lore videos are an excellent primer on that front. keep up the good work!
@@scelonferdi kind of, the Dreadwing did use lots of poison and radiation weapons. Other than that they were what is said in the video, which is basically a division designed for carrying out missions that would be classified as war crimes.
They were more the Emperor’s exterminators. Because while the Space Wolves would be sent to kill you and most likely make a mess, it was with the intent to send a message to survivors. The Dark Angels on the other hand were the ones you sent when you wanted no trace of something to remain.
What's probably the biggest missed opportunity with the Dark Angels is the laser focus on the Fallen, to the exclusion of the many other dark secrets the legion traditionally kept. Like, the well of dirty secrets, covert operations, and unspoken revelations is deep. You could create a company of Dark Angels whose whole deal was to guard a single buried site or to hunt down a single (non-Fallen) enemy from the Crusade era that is too terrible to be allowed to be even known. (Not even getting into how many opposing factions, mostly Xenos or other Imperium forces, may wish the Dark Angels dead and/or exposed for atrocities committed long ago). For that matter, this can also be reflected in the Fallen themselves. A warband of (presumably non-Chaos) traitors who nonetheless continue to guard secrets or hunt old foes. The scars of betrayal and persecution not dimming their sense of duty or the strength of oaths sworn in days long past.
Disagree most of this lore is recent. Being released in the Crusade book. Specially stuff like the dread, fire and storm wings. As well as their internal orders. Off course they can and probably will be mentioned on codeci moving forward. Also forgot to mention some of the stuff about them is not even that fleshed out in the HH novels. Specially if you compare with the likes of space wolves and sons of horus
@jirojhasuo2ndgrandcompany745 Im about three quarters cherokee and I agree with you there. But the Dark Angels ended up with a perfect aesthetic. I'm building a Kill Team Intercession Squad of Mortifactors right now. These guys seem like worthy successor to pick up that mantle of missed opportunity. Everything I'm reading about them, I imagine the Navajo except being canabal and crazier. They sound like the perfect Chapter to have a Native inspired aesthetic.
thank you for this. i've tried and failed to learn about Dark Angels history losing mostly to boredom. you're remarkably good at summarizing large and complicated pieces of information. still pretty amazed you got the badab war down in ~20 mins.
Late reply, but Oculis Imperia did a great breakdown of their origins and history. Heads up though, his videos are him acting a scholar within that universe, and he can certainly *sound* like a scholar (complicated language, awkward sentences, Latin, the works).
I've just started properly reading/listening to the Horus Heresy books having only read a smattering throughout the years. This is a great rundown of the 1st legion and rather than spoil anything its enhanced my understanding and enjoyment. Love your videos. Keep up the great work!
creating custom orders and their icons, honour marks, personal heraldry, etc. has become a project all on its own when building my dreadwing themed army.
I got into 40k about a year ago and chose Dark Angels as my chapter based on a bunch of reasons. My biggest gripe with them has been the lore around them being so focused on the Fallen. Its a cool idea, but its like their only thing in 40k lore and I found that pretty disappointing. This has given me a bit of needed appreciation for my SM as this was a great break down of lore that I was wholly unaware of. Thanks!
in 30k they are really interesting.. like the idea that the emperor equipped them with dark age weapons partly in case he ever had to bring mars to heel
With the current arc of 40k seeming to be pushing further and further to the Lion's return, even as a spikey git I would much like Cyper and the Fallen to be put to rest with his return. The ever-shrinking support for them past a mere legends capacity combined with the Dark Angels forced to always engage with it (much as how all Eldar lore is stuck in a black hole surrounding Slaanesh or them being a dying race) is honestly a net negative at times.
Great video, Ian! I am loving the Horus Heresy Legion profiles! You always manage to make each subject seem fresh, explained with a knowledge, enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and succinctness all too rare! Cheers!
I learned quite a lot, thank you. (I have a weird issue with the Dark Angels: whenever I read or hear "Lion El'Jonson", I can't help but visualize Lionel Richie. For years now. There's no reason to do so and I don't know why I do that. But that makes a very peculiar Primarch for sure.)
"Hello? Is it me you're looking for? ...why? What have you heard? Who did you hear it from? Not that it's true of course, whatever it is. We've never been anything but loyal, it's fine."
Honestly as a Fallen Angel enthusiast I really hope the Dark Angels some day rebuild the legion. It’s a shame to see what they’ve become since their first days within the the unification wars.
Truth be told, if the Lion came back to 40k? At the state that it is in now? you know for a FACT he would rebuilt the 1st and go on a campaign of demon genocide. He would let Guillimian's calls go to the astropathic voice mail box.
It’s kind of interesting how the Dark Angels still work as a legion to some extent by having separate chapters but if the Dark Angels Supreme Grand Master (Chapter Master) needs to he can simply ask the others to go do something and they are sworn to answer to him.
This is basically what I have been craving for since I first found your channel. Don't get me wrong, I love all your other content as well, but this is just my cup of tea. When I first walked into a Games Workshop back in 2002, the first novel to grab my attention was the cover of "Angels of Darkness." I bought it and was hooked on Space Marines ever since, particularly Dark Angels and their shrouded story. I've been a fan of Warhammer 40K ever since.
Surprised Ian didn't mention where they get their name, from the 1893 poem "Dark Angel" by Lionel Johnson, about trying to reconcile being gay and Catholic at the same time
This makes me so happy to see. Ian, I actually got into 40K because of your easy breakdown of the lore. I bought my first figurines last weekend and will have my first 500 point army next week. Excellent! Not necessary to be included, but there’s the some (almost) funny bits where Alpha Legion joins the Dark Angels in the Rangdan campaign to 1 cover their operation to recover Omegon, 2 “learn” from Dark Angels, and 3 promote the Lion to be Warmaster over Guilliman. Also early in heresy Perturabo tricks the Lion into believing he’s loyal because he didn’t want to fight him. Hey great videos!
Looking forward to the rest of these! Hope that this series will be easier for you on a production/writing side, than something like the Badab War. Thank you so much for this series of videos!! Having primer of the Legions spanning the Heresy and into the 40K timeline is going to help so much! Will definitely be re-watching these videos! Thank you!!
That is a lot of information about how the Space Marine Legions evolved through the Great Crusade which I have never encountered before. I always wondered how they operated and functioned before their Primarchs were found so I am quite grateful for this video answering those questions. I also find it interesting how the Dark Angels and the Black Templars are both fantasy counterparts of the historical Knights Templar yet the Dark Angels represent the "secretive monastic mystics" side of the Knights Templar whereas the Black Templars represent the "fanatical bloodthirsty crusader" side. I wonder how Games Workshop's writers decided that the Space Marines needed 2 very different "Space Knights Templar" chapters, as it was not until the Armageddon expansion for WH40K in 3rd edition that the Black Templars got much of an identity.
Just wanted to say I'm binging your channel to get into warhammer an so far your vids have been perfect for it,really well put Thanks for all your work!

Thank you for your comprehensive history of the origins of my favorite legion, the Dark Angels. Having been suspected of being traitors, and the fallen being thought of as loyal, from some of the early lore, it's good to see that they were always loyal, though brutal in carrying out the Emperor's vision of a united humanity. Unfortunately it can't be overstated that far too many innocents suffered dearly from the actions of loyalist and traitor, alike.
I think the dark angels has one the best realized heraldry. And the best part you can apply them to 40k models just fine. Also their gameplay in current edition is pretty cool with enough variation with every thing from infantry blocks to tanks and even their variation of assault that's does not mean chainword and pistol troops, with the only downside they can't get allies. And to be honestly nobody picks allies on 30k unless it's knights or a titan. So they have no downside.
I’ve always thought it would be an amazing twist if it turns out that at the end of the destruction of caliban it was the loyalist dark angels who disappeared and the traitors who went on to become the 40K dark angels and their successors. It would explain a few points neatly I think. It would explain why their armour is dark green and not black. You could imagine that if caliban was destroyed, the traitors who were fighting for caliban’s independence would have good cause to reconsider their position, and even make their hunt for the ‘fallen’ that bit more interesting. I mean even azreal. Needn’t know maybe they have a secret rank where the truth is passed through the years with proof of the events to maintain the plausible deniability of the rest of the chapter. But the proof can be shown or the chapter master if the need arises.
Considering that in 30k tabletop Inner Circle Cenobium Knights have an option called Breaker of Witches, yeah I think it’s pretty clear that at least some of the Dark Angels knew what demons and warp shenanigans would look like.
I feel Luther was kinda in the right hating the Emperor after seeing what happened to Caliban after they left. The planet had been beautiful with massive forests and they had protected the people as knights, when they came back they found the forests had been clear cut and bulldozed into barren wastelands, the people they had protected were now being forced into labor working in factories to the point of death, and the governor and higher ups who were from Terra looked down on the people calling natives and other insulting names. If that wasn’t bad enough they found out that the large factory had a demon in the lowest levels of the basement. The man in charge decided to take the workers of Caliban and lock them in these lower levels which was roughly big enough for only 1/4 of the people put in there while he and the Terrans had vast room. His idea was to lock them down there so this monster could feed on the Calibanites while him and the Terrans were safe and could take their time thinking of a solution since their lives weren’t in danger. Luther was…..less than pleased at all this.
Yah, no idea why this happened. Of coarse it comes down to the author only being human and probably just finding a reason to make Luther’s betrayal more acceptable, basically saying that he chose to side with protecting his people than the Imperiums. Same author had the main characters cousin become a kind and joking CHAPLAIN. Also had The Lion behead a chaplain for telling him they couldn’t use pyskers because of the emperors edict of Nikea (can’t remember the actual spelling) which is pretty questionable. Also the book was very hard to get they from tons of spelling mistakes and such. So I guess it’s up to each person if they consider it cannon or not about what happened to the planet because it does seem odd that it was a Primarch planet that got so badly destroyed by the Imperium.
@@crimsonknight7011 Never read it, but your points make it look like the one lesser books of the HH. This is the issue that plagues HH with too many authors
I believe it’s called Descent of Angels and the sequel Fallen Angels. They are done by two different authors but have the same two main characters which are cousins. Decent of Angels starts off before the emperor shows up and The Lion is trying to conquer his planet and deals with quite a bit of the demonic creatures and is a really good book. Fallen Angels I believe had all the spelling errors and was hard to read.
When you make a video on the 2nd and 11th Legion, you should put them in a playlist but "remove them" so you have all 20 in a single playlist! BTW, the art at 2:33 isn't tagged by the artist I believe is called Earl the Artist. Its also a Thunder Warrior. :)

Great video….DA’s for life
“For the Lion!!!”
I think it’s all but confirmed at this point that the Dark Angels knew about chaos. That was a big secret for them to keep, and the first of many.
Considering that in 30k tabletop Inner Circle Cenobium Knights have an option called Breaker of Witches, yeah I think it’s pretty clear that at least some of the Dark Angels knew what demons and warp shenanigans would look like.
Excited for this series!
Love your content! Keep it up. More Alpha legion.
Ok ok but you MIIIIIIGHT have a bit of a wait for that vid...
@@ArbitorIan Nonsense, Ian. They're ALL Alpharius.
We are alpharius!
This is strange, most other primarch homeworlds were left alone in their state
Yah, no idea why this happened.
I was going to collect DA, I preferred their Rogue Trader black scheme but all the secrecy put me off as years went on.
I was hoping for more on how the legion used to be portrayed in different iterations of the game, like with your Badab and HH videos.
Yeah I might do that as a different video in the future since, specifically with dark angels, it's changed so much!
Imo the 30k dark angels are much more interesting than their 40k selves.
When you make a video on the 2nd and 11th Legion, you should put them in a playlist but "remove them" so you have all 20 in a single playlist!
BTW, the art at 2:33 isn't tagged by the artist I believe is called Earl the Artist. Its also a Thunder Warrior. :)
can we have this but for 40k and more like in edition order as in what changed for astarties each edition and what changed to specific chapters
Maybe one day. I've got eighteen more of these to write first!!!!
Just saw your colab with MWM. Lol you know you’ve officially “made it” now right?
Nice work!
